- The Audi A5 Sportback - a great all rounder but do you want one?
Sold between 2009 and 2016, the first generation "8T8" Audi A5 Sportback was one of the forerunners of the "4 door coupe" category. Sitting somewhere between the practical A4 saloon and the great looking A5 coupe, was it a niche worth inventing?
A full review of the MK1 A5 Sportback including comfort, practicality, performance, handling, styling, economy.
Model on test is "2015 2.0 TDI (190bhp) S Line (Nav) (5 Seat) 5d" but also covers cars sold in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

We’ve had one for six years,we love it, even now I can’t think what I’d change it for
I’m a 29 year old self employed marketing person who does video, photography, graphic design etc and I purchased a 2012 A5 sportback a few months ago. Guess I’m predictable 🤣.
I think they look amazing and really classy. Sloping roof has a touch of A7 to it. Much classier looking than the 4 series Gran Coupe, and I don’t like Mercedes so the CLK wasn’t an option.
Mine is the 2.0tdi 177 bhp version which i’ve had mapped to around 340 lb/ft and 230bhp so it pulls brilliantly and still gets around 42mpg on average. Mine isn’t S line so suspension is lovely and soft over bumps but still copes well for a bit of spirited driving. Manual gearbox is lovely and smooth, especially compared to my previous car, a 2012 BMW 320d which had an awful clunky manual gearbox. I really don’t have a bad word to say about the A5 sportback, apart from that the interior and infotainment system is maybe looking a tiny bit dated now in 2022.
Haha, no way! You're the first person to comment to fit their target audience 😄
I agree, it is a bit like a baby A7. I really like the look of the A7 and occasionally think I've seen one only to realise it's an A5 Sportback. Yours sounds like a great car!
Same here!!! I have the 2013 sportsback s line. Same color as in the video. I am also a photographer and graphic artist. This is sooooo crazy because I am 29 years also. I got mine in December. Please drop me your Instagram account... When I read your comment, I thought to myself, THIS IS SOOO MEEEE :-D
Self employed Videographer and just bought the 2015 sportback S-Line😅
Hahah possibly joining the owner's list tomorrow! Been thinking about this car for a number of years but always ended up with something different. Anyhow, just turned 31, i'm self employed and working as a mobile app developer / UI Designer x)
He exists! :D
This A5 is essentially a hatchback version of what Audi calls a sportback.
This replaced a Audi A4 Saloon I owned and just recently purchased a 2016 Audi A5 Black Edition Plus Quattro S Tronic 3 months ago. Brilliant car. Having a 2 year old toddler I needed a 5 door practical car and well as something looking sportier so a coupe was out of the question. The sportback was the perfect choice. It has a hatchback style opening boot for easy access getting pram in and out (struggled with my A4 Saloon while the boot space is the same at 480L the opening is limited).
Been driving 23 years and always owned a manual, this is my first automatic and a great choice too. Just stick it in D and let the do all the gear changing for you. Can use manual mode if you wish from either the gear or the paddle shift on the steering wheel. The quattro definitely handles better and has more grip on the road. Would recommend to anyone looking for a practical car as well as retaining the sportier look of the 3 door coupe.
Sounds like a really nice spec of the A5 you've got! So it really is the best of both worlds with the A4 and A5. It's nice to hear my suspicions about the automatic suiting the car are valid :) Cheers for the mega comment!
Picking mine up this week...can't wait. This is the best review on UA-cam. Thanks. Very professional and relaxing to watch.
Ah thank you Gary, very kind. Enjoy the new car!
You've got the perfect voice for these types of videos. super relaxing. Could have been a therapist!
Haha, thank you. Perhaps I'll go for that in my next venture!
Im creative, self employed and drive a bike
Haha! Sounds more realistic
I think the Sportback looks better than the Coupe! we all have different taste, obviously that's a good thing!
This is very true 👍
Great review! Just got myself one as the new daily. Youve inspired me to do a lovely roadtrip through Hope Valley. Absolutely gorgeous.
Awesome and congrats on the new car. Make sure you drive through Winnats pass, glorious thing
Great video! With my budget I had the choice to either go for something newer but a basic model or something older with a good spec so I recently purchased a 65 plate A5 sportback s line 3.0 V6 quattro. I'm so happy with my decision. What a car! This video was very helpful with making my decision thanks!
Older with better spec is always best! Thanks for letting me know, glad it helped :)
Man I wish they sold this model in the US. Just to have something a little different. The slightly smaller, more compact feel of the A5 but the practicality of a 5 door is something that I wish my A5 coupe could offer. Great video, thank you for sharing.
Thanks Brian, very strange they didn't sell it in the US!
Just import it.
Great review!
Thank you!
Creative, kinda (but not really self employed), buying this car next week. Coupe version. Absolutely cannot wait.
Great video. Thank you!!
Awesome, glad you enjoyed the video.
I've done a review specifically on the coupe here: ua-cam.com/video/Zsh3wpLVizY/v-deo.html
Enjoy the car!
Thanks for the video JJ. I've just purchased a used 2014 model. It drives very well and looks great. The design on these doesn't look like it's 10+years, were as other models such as the third generation C-Class haven't aged as well imo. I think the interior has aged well too. However, not as nice as the 2016+ models. I might keep this for a year or 2 then go up to a 17/18 model.
Thanks Brian. I agree, I like that gen C-Class but it hasn't aged as well as the Audi. There's a striking difference between the new generation Mercs and that generation, where's the Audi has been a more subtle evolution, so I think that might be part of it. The interiors of the newer Audis are phenomenal.
I have had my a5 3litre s line black edition Quattro coupé, and i love it! I had an a3 thought it was amazing, but compared to this, night and day! both suffered the same problem, forget what gear your in at a junction, r-about, the revs die, then engine! I drove a Mazda van through my job and you couldn't kill the engine, come to a slow at a junction 4th gear still pull away! my A5 is the best car I have ever had and it looks amazing, it's a seriously pretty car! I am going to change the big abnoxious whale tail carbon fibre spoiler, its £500 worth and it actually spots the sleek lines if the car!
thank you for this vid im in between this and the e350 for the same model year of 2015 this is helpful cuz im also price sensitive
Glad to help. I'm a Merc owner so I'd be quite tempted by the E350 😁
I had e350 bluetec, and gone to a Audi A5 Quattro, I prefer the Audi the merc looks nice but the 2 I’ve had the eml light comes on both dpf related and adblue pump failed along with parking sensors and crackling speakers.
Loved this review. I just bought the 2016 face lift interior. Its really quick. But its very low, so im still figuring out how to not scrape the bottom every other day
Awesome thanks. Yes they're quite low and sporty aren't they. Better than your average SUV :)
I am, I am. Self employed, creative and I recently got my A5... I love it.
Awesome, I think you might be the 4th or 5th now since I put this video up, quite a while ago. So you guys do exist but fairly rare. Well done Audi on your target audience haha
I bought a 2015 A5 Black Edition Plus 3.0 TDI S Tronic 245 (yes I know the name is a mouthful!) around a year ago now.
It is a fantastic car imho, in looks, practicality (I managed to transport a big fridge/freezer with relative ease) and surprisingly in driving characteristics too. My car does have the optional adaptive suspension and Quattro Sport Differential, which make the car flawless through corners and powering out of them again! These options are a must if you enjoy more spirited driving.
In terms of reliability there have been some flaws however. when I first purchased the car, it kept on going into limp mode and after some investigation, the EGR Valve was determined to be at fault. More recently I have also had a slow coolant leak, which has turned out to be the Coolant Shut Off Valve. This part is (un)conveniently located right in the 'V' of the engine, requiring a 5.5 hour strip down and costing £1320 purely for strip down and investigation (according to my local Audi dealership) the repairs required were quoted as a further 7.5 hours of labour and then of course there's the cost of the parts on top. I also found multiple forums of Audi owners with similar or the same problems with 3.0 TDI engines, so I gather that these are not altogether uncommon issues.
Luckily for me, both of these issues were covered by the Audi Extended Warranty which came with the car as an Approved Used. However, anybody who is looking for a car of this type needs to be aware of how easily the cost of some of the repairs can rack up, especially if buying one without any warranty or mechanical knowhow.
None of this changes my feelings towards the car though, I simply love it and will be happy to keep it for many years to come (as long as I can enjoy some hassle free motoring without any mechanical issues... We can hope right... XD)
Nice one, thanks for the info on reliability. You were right to have that warranty it seems!
I purchased the 2013 A5 Black Edition 2.0TFSI about 2month ago and I have exactly the same coolant/shut off valve issue that has been described here. Maybe its a common fault. Luckily I am also covered by warranty!
All that aside, I thoroughly enjoy the drive. I previously had an A3 but 3Doors, having a child pushed me to upgrade. Oh, and I am also a Graphic Designer 😂
It looks like Craig takes pride in keeping his car clean inside and out (or he's probably loaded and pays someone else to clean it!), compared to some of the other cars that you've reviewed!
Haha! Yes, he's a nice fella is Craig 😄
Great review pal and LOL @ backseat JJ.
Cheers Matt! 😁
Self employed architect here with that S line sport back.. 😊
Sweet! Suits an architect for sure
Great review! I'm a young self-employed creative(no joke) looking at this car to replace my older A4! Haha!
Haha, love it. Perfect car for you then!
@@JJonCars 😂
Another great video JJ. I'm sure wandering backseat JJ will find his way home for the next car review:) It's a shame Audi didn't make a hatchback version of the 2 door A5. I believe this was because businesses expect their company car drivers to carry more than 2 people.
Thanks Mark! Yes I shouldn't have much problem finding him, I'm sure he will be back. He'll probably find it hard to get any other work anyway with a name like Backseat JJ.
Yes you're right about that. Saloon style boots are always awkward to use. But I guess it makes it a bit easy for the designers to make the best looking car they can. Same problem with my old CLK - it's almost really practical, if it wasn't for having to try and awkwardly slot stuff through the boot.
its because there would be no place for it with the 2 door coupe already available. And if you wanted hatchback practicality you'd either go for a sportback A3 or A4 Avant
I have just bought a 2014 A5 sportback quattro 177 SE Technik for my wife. It only has 26k on the clock after 9yrs. We have 3 kids so the extra doors will be perfect for us over the coupe. She is also self employed and works as a hair stylist, so you could say that fits the demographic they were talking about! Although something tells me I will be fighting over the keys on most days 😂
Haha, nice one!
I am one of the self-employed creative unicorns. I run a photography company based out of Zürich Switzerland. Because I have to carry lots of lighting gear etc having the rear doors makes a lot of sense. Also having 4 doors means the main doors aren't so long as in the coupe which helps for parking in tight spaces. I have the B9 2018.
I can see it being the right car for your line of work. Good to hear from another unicorn :)
Great video. Which roads was this filmed on? Looks like a good drive out.
Thank you! This was all around the Hope Valley / Castleton in the Peak District. The big pass is 'Winnats Pass' which is a pretty cool road.
Agree with pretty much all of that, my wife has had the 190hp version for 4 years. Only real negative is the handling, there is a strange ‘bouncy’ quality to the springing that is quite disconcerting sometimes. You feel undamped vertical oscillations .
Are you sure your shocks still had life left in them?
Bang on about the stalling issue, even if I'm turning at a junction and I'm in 3rd,it will stall, very odd. Out and about in Castleton too. 👍
Weird isn't it! Good to hear it's not just me who noticed it too haha.
How slow are you going in 3rd or how fast are you taking those junctions?
I've recently bought one of these, an older 2011 one. It's a 3L diesel (240hp) automatic in SE spec... creme leather seats (grandad spec) with 17in wheels i believe.. I may swap the wheels but will look for 18s rather than 19 or 20s as i'd quite like to preserve the ride quality.. It's a very comfy car and with so much torque on tap on a motorway you rarely ever see it drop out of 7th gear on overtaking. My one's on 156K miles.. I think the engine will last (it pulls so smoothly) but the gearbox (repaired at 102K miles costing £2400) and rest of the car worry me slightly.
Nice. Grandad spec = best spec 😄
If it has been looked after, hopefully it will be alright. At least the gearbox issue was sorted!
2.0 Tfsi 2010 engine... is it worth the oil consumption? Can get an engine rebuild and get new internals and turbo
You should review more Audis. Would like a A8.
Would love to do an A8
I was thinking of selling my 2010 Jaguar XF and buying one of these, an older one like a 2009/2010 plate as a daily, i quite like the hatch back on the A5, sporty and practical is what I’m looking for.
It will definitely be more practical than the Jag. But if it was me, I'd miss the luxurious interior of the Jag I think :) but if you don't mind the steady sensible Audi interiors then its a fair swap!
I'm actually considering 2011/2012 facelift version, but I didn't make a decision yet. Kinda got attached to my old trusty hatchback, focus 2,5 :P
Hello, I'm self employed in a job requiring creative quick thinking. Heading to buy a facelifted A5 Sportback manual 3.0 TDI quattro S-line the day after tomorrow. To be honest I wanted a Coupe more, but a good condition Sportback in an OK price appeared nearby while all Coupes nearby are either 2.0, automatics, post-crash or spares/repairs or too expensive
It's definitely the car for you then, Audi were right 😄
The Coupe is a prettier car, but back seats and practical hatchback will make up for a lot! Good luck with your purchase and enjoy the car 👍
Recognise those roads your on, North Wales or the Lake District. Sure I’ve took that bend with the rocky outcrop at 5.16
I’m here because I’ve just left a deposit on a 2.0 s line soortback 177. Absolutely mint 2013 in black
Well, similar kind of terrain, but it was actually in the Peak District :) Enjoy the car!
I have A5 Sportback 2015 2.0TDI 177hp. The car is beautiful , looks great. I only had 1 issue and i hate that. My dual heating unit is not working well. Drivers side is blowing cold and passengers side is blowing hot. Now it is winter and i am freezing . mechanics are speculating what could be the problem, so i drive it like that. I am disappointed that this kind of car has such problem, 2015 car, unbelievable. I never expected such problem
That is an annoying problem. You will have to keep swapping seats with your passenger and let them drive so you can both stay a reasonable temperature 😄 Fingers crossed🤞 for you that you get it sorted soon.
Hi , is the rear view/glass size on the a5 coupe 3dr. Vs 5dr sportback the same? Test drove a 3dr one and it had limited rear visibility, almost.as limited as an FN2 CTR.
Hi. It's been a long while since I drove it, but I'm fairly certain the visibility is better in the sportback than the coupe. Much more glass from the rear windows and hatchback.
How does one know if it's the 190 HP version
After 3 estate cars I owned an A5 Sportback Quattro for 6 years. Best of both worlds , would eat motorway miles (very quiet) and could fit 2.5 M drain pipes in the back.Infotainment bit dated now.I think it would have looked better with some of the design of the Tesla at the back end.
No rear wiper was a negative.
Great video. Given a choice would u choose this or the bmw e70 ?
Cheers! That is quite a different car! Personally for my own daily driver I prefer saloons/hatchbacks to SUVs, so I'd go with the A5. But I'd love to get an E70 on the channel to see what I think.
@@JJonCars I Kno it's a bit of a stretch, the a5 is a bit low for me but it's definitely a beautiful car
What’s more reliable between the 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TDI?
The diesel which is the TDI all vw group diesel engines were slightly more reliable but both engines are bullet proof if taken care of.
Can u sit straight up in the back? My family is very tall so i need to make sure back Seat head room is very well
Yes, but only just. I wouldn't recommend it if you've got anyone in the back taller than me! (I'm 6ft/184cm tall)
I really like these cars, personally I'm a coupe guy and the TDI just look much more interesting, muscular and better imo. Maybe that was deliberate by VAG to shift more of their dirty diesels? Would like to have one one day.
I hadn't noticed that the TDI versions were that different - perhaps it's because more TDI versions were S-line? But you're right, it was peak diesel time so it's quite possible!
@@JJonCars dieselgate is just one reason I hate VAG but they are all at it. Apparently Mercedes are notorious for over stating their mpg figures...
@@MrSunnyBhoy yeah, they were all at it! :/
I'm thinking of buying one, but from 2016 or up.
Did you make a video of one of those?
A 2 liter petrol?
Hi Steve, no I haven't done a video yet on the 2016+ model. Hopefully will one day. I did drive one a couple of years ago and liked it, but can't remember it in great detail!
@@JJonCars did you ever reviewed a mercedes clk 200 from after 2006 ?
Guessing you've seen that I've done my 2006 CLK 200 :) But nothing newer than that. There wouldn't be much difference though with a newer one as mine is the facelift model. And then after 2009 they got rid of the CLK and just had the C and E class coupes :)
Are multitronics as bad as people make out? Getting a FSH 2015 Quattro MT CVT auto with 100k but gearbox always been serviced.
As long as the car had been serviced well all should be good :)
I got my A5 and got fired the same week, so funny hiw that goes now im a entrepreneur 😉
Oh damn! Good luck in your new career of creative self employment 👍
Where did backseat JJ end up?
I found him strolling along the side of the road in a later video, he'd been on some adventure but wouldn't tell me where
In my opinion the sportsback is way nicer then the coupe.
Self employed... creative... thinking about buying an audi a5 sport back... but looking at a 2.0tfsi 😅
It's just the car for you!
I'm a self employed architect in California about to purchase one of these. Per your comment at 4mins 🤣🤣
Perfect car for you 😄
SInce i saw your VW Arteon vid , Ive seen around 3 in my local area ,
Maybe its a Northern thing , as I remember you said they are quite rare .
Ps . love this shape of Audi , but usally find the designs quite stale ..
You know, I've started to see a few around too! But what I think it is - that it is quite rare, but they really stand out. So if you do see one, you'll notice it. Whereas you'll drive past 100 Audis in the same time and not notice 😄
Exactly, it's a pleasant looking car, but not setting the world on fire with exciting design!
@@JJonCars yeah I agree , ive seen one of the 3 I saw lately , local i think , But Audis, OMFG they are like the new Vauxhall Nova , like , eveywhere...
@@Oh-Jay52 😂
Saab 900 did the OG about 40 years ago…
Please tell backseat JJ we love his white turtleneck.
I'll let him know when I find him 😁
sold my 2013 tdi 143hp recently, it was comfortable, not the most comfortable but does well enough. My model unfortunately lacked the power(especially for its weight) and it is fwd so when i do put the pedal down, theres just a lot of torque oversteer before the power kicks in, infotainment started glitching at times and a light in the speedometer was faulty
Ah yes, I can imagine that 143bhp just wouldn't be enough for its weight. It's funny that they were saying it's quite a light car for it's class (aluminium front wings etc), but it's still a bit of a heavy beast really.
I am creative and self employed 😮❤
I think that's 3 or 4 of you now, clearly Audi were right :)
hehe i am a software engineer and just bought myself a 2016 audi A5 2.0 sportsback
Well, funnily enough, so am I, as is the owner of this car :D
Another great video, i think CLK is better 😄
Thanks Ruta 😁 I do too, but then I'm probably a bit biased :)
@@JJonCars 🤣🚘
Yeah the dashboard is a bit dull even if good materials. New version has more style.
It's night and day I reckon
Self employed graphic designer 👀
The presenter resembles a baddie from a Bond movie with his polo kneck top and goatee beard
cope whit 4 dors is first in mercedes benz cls 2004
Tut tut tut. You forgot about the Mercedes cls mate. 2004, the original. Of course they weren't a hatchback style like this, but iirc it was the first sedan "coupe".
Yeah, I should have clarified that haha
Its not the first four door coupe, Mercedes Benz CLS started this trend in 2004
I put a little note in the vid as I realised before I published about the CLS... however, the CLS was a saloon so you could argue the sportback was the first 5 door coupe at least :)
PERODUA! It’s a Malaysian car brand.
Yep :) Don't see them here much at all any more.
Bro my neighbour has one 💀 why dont I 😭
Haha, envy is the thief of joy my friend 😄
Self employed creative. Drive an A5 Coupe.
You are the second so far, perhaps Audi were on to something after all 😄
Mercedes invented the 4 door coupe with the cls !
It's true. I guess I was thinking about the 4 door hatchback coupe... or just taking poetic license...
It’s was going so well until the not so funny comedy sketch from the back seat
Sorry to disappoint :P
I like the Audi A5 Sportback manual
Me too 👍
I full tank my Audi A5 2.0 Black Edition Plus Quattro, I average around 240 miles, is this normal?
I commute to and from work daily about 4 miles a day
Hello - that is quite poor fuel economy. Your commute is short which will mean lower efficiency as your engine will take time to warm up. But even so I think something is wrong there unless you are absolutely flooring it everywhere you go!
@@JJonCars when I first got the car at first around 5 months ago, I was doing average 350 miles full tank.
I got few lights on the dashboard which are TPSM lights , ABS , Parking brake malfunction, headlight range warning or something. Including the ESC light on constantly along with abs. Could this be the reason to the fuel?
Also both tyre pressure seems to be fine I checked them twice and so far no deflation. But the lights on come dashboard still.
At the moment got it booked by Audi themselves beginning of next year and hope it resolves the matter. Sorry about the long essay lol
@@tooleegitt1892 I wouldn't have thought those issues could cause the fuel usage, but then your car doesn't sound too happy, so who knows! Have you checked tyre pressures just incase that TPMS message is actually real? 😄Might make a few mpg difference at least
@@JJonCars yes I did, but still nothing. I’ll triple check with Audi first week next year and I’ll keep you updated. Thought maybe you could help ahah but hey not to worry buddy
