- The American dream is the main reason why, for centuries the United States of America has been the number one destination for generations of immigrants. During all these years each immigrant, hitting the road, to come legally or illegally in this country, believes that anybody, regardless of his or her origins, can achieve prosperity and success for himself and his family. They come from all over the world, Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa. And for some of those who eventually settle in the country, the dream can become a reality. VOA’s Arzouma Kompaore gives us a closer look at these African immigrants who are transforming their lives in America.

This is amazing, I went to university for the first time at the age of 33 with 0 education and 3 small children. It was the best thing I ever did. Now I am approaching 40, still in university and I will not stop until I become a doctor.

I'm Asian American and have many brilliant Nigerian colleagues in my field of private equity. African students in general have an excellent reputation in corporate America, often attend top schools, the ivy league, have engineering backgrounds, work in tech, high finance, consulting, law etc. They are also the sweetest people and make good friends.

Yep. My mother has a business degree and is on her way to getting another degree in the health care sector. Have an uncle and cousin who are both rich politicans. I work as a entertainer/actress. I'm proud of my African roots.
One need to work once this “education” is completed.

Meaning just getting a degree can make you deeper into poverty, getting a degree or learning something that makes money gets you out of poverty, especially if you are black in America. College debt is one of the killers of black americans cause they don't get hired as much as their counterparts

In reality, getting money is the key to a healthy life, but if you are in dire straights a degree is a first step if you have no other opportunities. America is so beautiful cause our ancestors fought so we can have so many options to make money, no need for JUST mainstream schooling
@@RealDealy This is true this is why people should look into community college as well as getting college credit through taking clep exams. Deac accredited colleges are an option too. This would eliminate student debt and poverty. This can be done while working a full time job.

Most of the time we learn at the last minute or when it’s much harder to do then normal. If kids in junior h.s. Learn that, they could prepare their life in advance without all the unnecessary work just to live while in school. You think better when you have less stress, and we need the next generation to be more creative then now
We don’t produce products anymore as a country, just get jobs for greedy corporations, and bankers, (trust me I play that investment game), but we need more then that to be a robust country, again. I’m gonna put my future children in “Elon Musk’s” school. They teach kids how to think in creative ways to solve problems. That is how I think teaching should be done cause It creates thinkers that create new products, and that means big MONEY & POWER!
This documentary makes me even more grateful for my parents and "aunties", proudly Nigerian-American. We work so hard while going through immense challenges and it shows.

@@alecgurney9305 I actually agree. The U.K. is way better than America when it comes to racial equality and access to wealth. Where I live in the U.K. is so diverse - Racism is almost non existent. Having said that - we still need to build our nation and our continent.
I have worked for some of the largest multinationals in the world building their businesses.
Then I stopped and setup a charitable organisation in the U.K.
Now we have to think about moving both to Nigeria and Africa so that we can create jobs, upskilling and development opportunities for our young people.
That is what will make Nigeria great. That is what will make Africa great. The question is are we hungry enough to work together to make it happen.

@DofA thanks - much appreciated. The elections, Politics and Banks do not affect what we are trying to achieve. The world has indeed changed. New ways of working have risen but we are still stuck in the past.
We have been blaming the Government and the politicians for far too long.
It’s high time we started to realise that those institutions may never change and if they do not change - we must move on.
In the same way that Governments took over from Monarchies - it could be the case that the people can start to think about doing away with the government - just putting the idea out there.
There is no point flogging a dead horse. Like all things which do not work - perhaps the government can be thrown into the dustbin.
What we are planning is quite radical in the change that it can bring especially to the lives of the people - please continue to pray for us.

very inspiring...My husband is an Igbo man and as an American born woman...I thank God for meeting such a strong willed and determined human being.. he inspires me day in and out when I see how hard he works on his dreams. He has taught me so much about his culture. these stories remind me of all he has shared with me...transformation is sacrifice/ hard work , be a blessing to others.. no man can take what is yours! unfortunate how we were never given the narratives of how blessed our people and people who look like us are...this is just a very small glimpse of it ...I thank GOD for the freedom it brought to me in my professional life when I met my husband!

I am so emotional watching this documentary. I am a student here in the US and it’s great to watch inspiring stories. With God everything is possible. I am shedding tears literally. I am overwhelmed however my faith has been provoked to even work hard and remain focused. I will realize my dreams one day. My Gos is a miracle worker and a promise keeper. Black males are taught that crying is a weak trait... That is one of the most dangerous things taught to BLACK males.. As an African and Nigerian, African Americans are indeed the richest black group in the world, with that said, kudos to my country Nigerian and other African Sisters and brothers... Actually we should be richer in our home countries, however many of us will never go back to developed - Nigeria is a very under developed country.

Blk immigrants are being used to hide our failure as descendants of American Chattel Slaves. According to the wealth data half of our race are not worth a dollar collectively. My personal ambitions have nothing to do with that number but my argument has everything to do with the history of this country and how we were disenfranchised from wealth.

In a way, I feel like that phase limits our potential to believe in ourselves. In our diaspora, there are so many examples of "firsts" that didn't allow themselves to be limited just because no other person or Black person had ever done it before. Though the journey isn’t easy, these individuals stepped out in faith. Everyone has a story to tell but we can always learn from someone’s journey. African & So Proud! It’s that reminder to not give up. You fall and you will rise back up again. The goal isn’t just becoming a millionaire but pursue your dreams and impact others for a purpose. Generational wealth is so very important that is why me and a couple other women of color started a peer to peer community with five people and now we’re at 350 people we are very proud to know that we are passing our wealth within our community and building as we go. You don’t need the govt to support you, you just need faith in your own community to build financial freedom!

These stories were very inspiring. I am an immigrant to Canada who came here qualified in my field however, had a hard time getting a good paying job. So I went back to university, changed career and is quite happy with what I am doing now. Sometimes, I wish I had started earlier in this field (an educator) or had the opportunity to go to university right after high school but that was not the case as I had no support from my father who abandoned me. (I worked and siezed the opportunity later on to attend university in my country). However, I am grateful to god that I am doing something that I love and is passionate about and that is making a difference in childrens' lives. You have to carve you own path to success.

This is lovely and very inspiring, as a Nigerian and an African, I am so proud of these people and many more who are doing well in the western world, at a time I felt that we blacks were only relegated to sport, entertainment, music and acting and that these were the only things we could do to bring us fame and fortune, but with this it shows that we can break heights and soar like an eagle in any field. But what I must say is this, and frankly speaking its a question, if these people were still in Africa or their home countries, will they be able to achieve this level of success? I want to assume that the answer is no! Yet, there they are in a foreign land, doing well for themselves, they are not playing the victim, they are not selling drugs, they are not saying , 'oh, the white man hates me, oh, I am limited by my skin color', NO! They are blazing the trail and setting the standard for younger ones coming, look at what the 😀😀commentator said about 40% or more immigrants from Africa being educated with at least a BSc it shows how education is important for one to succeed in that country.
Some important lessons from this:
1) As blacks lets not give in to prejudice, we are not inferior, we can soar like an eagle in any field.
2) Black people, the place of education can never be over emphasized we must be willing to read, educate ourselves and use what we have learnt to get wealth and be a blessing to humanity.
3) If these people were still in Africa, they might not have attained this level of success, this should serve as a wake up call to all Africans, both the citizens and leaders, enough of the bad governance, enough of the envy, strife and killings, enough of the black on black crime, we must make our own land fit for our people especially our youths who are moving in droves to foreign countries, this will lead to brain drain and our best minds will only help in building other peoples country.
4) You don't have to kill, go naked, scam someone else, bring someone else down, do voodoo, prostitution, partake in crime or do any bad thing to succeed, which many of us are doing or feel we should do to succeed, NO!!! God has blessed the earth with lots of resources both tapped and untapped and he has blessed our minds to be the best, all we need to do is to discover ourselves and be focused.

Please stop this stupidity. There are many, many African American miliionaires in this country. Stop regurgitating these tired White slogans like " playing victim." African Americans established over 100 colleges and universities less than a century after being removed from slavery and did things in this country that no other group of Black people on the planet did although they were the majorities in their countries and didn't have to deal with the daily threats of racism. Just congratulate these brothers and sisters on a job well done and stop pushing this ignorant narrative. African Americans are directly responsible for opening the doors for ALL global Africans to come here and prosper. Our people took down ALL of the barriers and fought ALL of the battles so that when they came there only concerns would be overcoming a language barrier and a financial one. They never had to worry about their communities being bombed, burned or fighting for basic human rights. Again congratulated them and acknowledge there are many African Americans doing the same things.

First, I thought you were an African American as am I and I thought you werevmaking discouraging comments about (y)our own by saying what we haven't done in our own country. There's a certain narrative created by some foreign brothers and sister that unfortunately some of us native born African Americans buy into as well when it comes to making comparisons between global Africans. Sometimes foreign born people aren't aware of the internal wars fought by Africans Americans that paved the way for others to come here and prosper. They aren't aware of the fact that the America they see today only came into existence roughly starting 50 years ago. Those changes came about after centuries of battles to change them. My thing is to welcome ALL from the global African family but don't here pushing the narrative that some have and trying to tell us what America is or isn't because we've put in four hard centuries of bitter experiences making it what it is for ALL other Black people that followed.
