    EPISODE 3! Macros! You can find the document from the video in the video description!
    You wouldn't believe how often I get asked the title, the basic run down is, to keep UI clean and it's easier to see spells etc.
    BUT, be sure to watch the entire video, lots of great info and Macros (with tips ofc)!
    Thanks for watching be sure to hit that LIKE if you enjoyed the video.

      Method Cdew hey man quick idea, I think it might be pretty cool if you got a couple subs to get in a war game with you not to actually play but to show everything in action for another video? Just a thought love the series

      Method Cdew I got some questions for the next video. Maybe you could answer them in the next video:
      1. Do addons influence the frame rate or cause lag if you use to much or to heavy? (F.e. should I disable my PvE addons for better performance in arena).
      2. Are you allowed to use addons on the arena cup?
      3. And to what extent can you customize your UI on arena LAN?

      why make so many copies of macros to fill up your bar? when you just make a modified macro to use 1 slot and just shift ctrl or alt?

      Cracka_Bob I agree. Why have the cyclone look like a barkskin. It would confuse me, certainly not a 'clean UI'. (For a cleaner UI, remove the gryphons and useless borders on the action bar)

    There's an addon that is really good for macro newbies and veterans alike. It has all the options for conditions in a drop down list that will be able to be inserted into a macro, and also does syntax highlighting, so if you make a mistake while typing out a macro, it is easy to troubleshoot. It's just called Macro Toolkit

    Dude, before I even get through this video, I want to thank you for this series. I'm actually an older player, but not fantastic at this or any game, just competitive. Back when I played wotlk, I hit 2100 and that was as far as I could go and I never did reach there again. I never truly understood keybinds and macros, but was just good enough to beat people at that point in time. I can't state enough how much I appreciate you going into depth explaining how you really play the game, it's inspired me to really try to PVP again and see what kind of progress I can make. Thank you.

    • @Zamix69
      @Zamix69 6 років тому +5

      Keep it up dude. Once you knock the rust off and re-learn the basics like keybinds, macros, etc, progress will show. All just learning about what your comp should do vs another comp, and so on. Good luck

      Same boat man. Best of luck. When I was younger I didn't need macros and was in the 2000+ ratings in WotLK and Cata. I had exceptional muscle memory and memory and combat reflexes, real life and in game. As I got older and focused more on my military career my body got the shit beat out of it. Now I'm retired and want to PvP 7 days week, but some of these guys are so awesome with these macros I can tell when someone is using them well.

      Dont worry, players that dont cheat with macros and excel are real players(as they literally play). It makes you play the game, not have a few buttons (keybinded to anything n everything) smashed mindlessly somewhat while you are only considering your LoS.

    For anyone thinking 'i don't pvp' focus and party macros are amazing for PvE as well. One macro that I love is to set my focus on the offtank and when he picks up a target that I need to switch to use a target of target macro to snap my spells to that new mob that spawned. Because my focus is always on the offtank whether the mob is alive or dead I don't have to worry about resetting my focus or misclicking. I'd need to check to be sure but I recall on my rogue when I was slowing adds my macro was /settarget focus; /cast [targetoftarget] poisoned knife
    This would switch me to target my offtank...but made me attack his target. This can be even more effective with fully ranged classes allowing you to swap between targets without having to click on them.

    • @Ryan_hey
      @Ryan_hey 6 років тому

      Technically you no longer need focus macros. Blizz built in Focus target keybind as a modifier, so you can set a button like SHIFT as your focus modifier, and then hit your keybind for a button and instead of applying that to your target, it'll modify its application to your focus target. It's freed up so many action bar slots now because I can any single one of dozens of keybinds to my focus target.

  • @aidenzoray3716
    @aidenzoray3716 6 років тому +2

    I was going to type 2-3 lines, but ended in an essay......
    To use less space in a macro (get room for more text in one macro), write the macros like this:
    /use [@focus]Purge
    /use [@focus]Wind Shear
    /use [harm]Purge; Wind Shear
    1. Use "use" instead of cast when available.
    2. use @ instead of target=
    3. Dont have space between the brackets and the spell name
    4. When having helpful and harmful spells.. its overkill to have "harm" and "help" in the same line - and yes, you can use non-targeted spells - use harm if its not aoe first, or help first if its a aoe heal. Usually its neither and harm is best practice to use.. If both are aoe/nontarget spells you have to decide what spell
    ex
    /use [help]Rejuvenation; Thrash
    This will always cast rejuvenation if u are currently targeting a friendly player, and ALWAYS cast thrash if u're not targeting friendly player.
    /use [harm]Moonfire; Wild Growth
    This works the other way around.
    Translated into speech it's like
    "Use moonfire on harmful targets, but wild growth on everything else"
    The ONLY reason to write macros with both help and harm, is if u don't want riptide to be cast on yourself if u have no target.
    /use [harm]Purge; [help]Riptide
    People used to write macros like this:
    /use [harm]Purge; [help][@player]Riptide - DON'T DO IT LIKE THIS
    and
    /use [harm, exist]Purge; Riptide - DON'T DO IT LIKE THIS
    which is now achieved by simply:
    /use [harm]Purge; Riptide - THIS IS THE WAY
    It works like this because how the "code" is interpreted by the compiler. Checks every statement between the ";" front to back, and if it yields, it will execute it and scrap the rest of the line.
    If your want 1 button for talent rows (or different), do it like this:
    /use [talent:1/1]spellname; [talent:1/2]spellname; [talent:1/3]spellname
    Where the first number represents the position from the top and second represent its position from the left: Ex a Frost DK on 100 Tier is the 7th tier from top and spell 1, 2 , 3
    /use [talent:7/1]Obliteration; [talent:7/2]Breath of Sindragosa; [talent:7/3]Hungering Rune Weapon
    Remember it WILL YIELD to the first that matches it condition from left to right.
    PVP talents work the same way - just type "[pvptalents:x/x]" instead
    Cdew have an error
    "/cast [@party1,harm] Purge"
    It should say @arena1, cause party1 can never be a harmful unit (except mind controlled or whatever but I don't think that is the intention.
    Happy arena!

      Seems strange that he does this now in Legion when there is the lowest amount of arena player ever in the game, compared to other expansions. Tho I'm guessing back in the day, youtubing wasnt that popular and most guides were "How to farm this or how to kill this boss". There were some arena shit going on but nothing major and definitely nothing of this high quality from a top end player.

    As a Hunter, there is one @mouseover macro I find invaluable, even in PvP (Battlegrounds).
    /petattack [@mouseover][]
    As it sounds, it tells your pet to attack whatever you have your mouse hovering on. I have it bound to middle mouse button and haven't went without it in the last 4+ years.
    Last I checked, it does not work with Warlock pets.

    small thing that is missing (kinda usefull for resto druids and hunters) are the /cast [@player] macros. druid example: if you have melees on you and you want to get away you can use /cast [@player] ursols vortex, which would drop ursols vortex directly ontop of you without you having to move the courser ontop of yourself or clicking with your mouse. also works for totems, starfall, traps, flare, binding shot and other things of that nature. great video dew.

    I think I commented before, but I've been following you for a few years and I always love that youre a top player, and until super recently the only killer on sham. I like lock rdruid and rsham, I really love my sham, and you gave me hope cause ppl always want to boot you from group or something depending on phase of game. Thank you for sharing these parts, because I was having a tough time finding things like this and I'm really trying to do arena and get better this year to get a mount but also not suck and be competent and able to play with others or just anyone and save time. I waste a lot of time and some better keybinds and macros would be nice instead of me getting finger tied.

      Most of the things here I'm seeing could be a bit more modernized. And you seem to not know a few other things entirely. A quick non-mattering one is that /use can be used in place of any /cast, because it does literally the same thing with one less character but that won't matter for most.
      @anything replaces target=anything. If you use the @ sign, the game will target whatever comes after @ which is another character and time save but isn't functionally different so it's still a nitpick
      mod:anything is something that is VITAL that you don't appear to know about. If you use a [mod:shift] conditional you can specify that specific thing to ONLY happen when you hold down shift. In this video, it would preserve literally HALF OF YOUR KEYS considering you have a key, and their shift counterparts bound everywhere as separate buttons. You can also have mod:ctrl or mod:alt.
      Specifying a target is something you can do for any aoe spell from totems to flamestrikes to healing rains. It will cast with the center of the aoe at the feet of whomever you target and can be useful sometimes.
      Using brackets specify how and when you'll cast anything SEPARATELY. For example, you could have a single key be bound /use [mod:shift, @arena1] [mod:ctrl, @arena2] [mod:alt, @arena3] Entangling Roots And that SINGULAR key could cast entangling roots at any of the three targets depending on whatever button you're holding at the time (The blank [] at the end of your focus macro is also the reason it casts on your target when you don't have a focus. IT IS NOT THE EXIST CONDITIONAL DOING THAT)
      Finally, using a semicolon lets you fit in different spells in the same macro under different conditions. You might've gleaned this from a the help/harm macros but it could be used in different ways than just that, for example, if you wanted to generalize nothing, shift, control, and alt being a progression of low, medium, stronger, and cooldown kinda things, you could macro that like /use [mod:shift] Vivify; [mod:ctrl] Sheilun's Gift; [mod:alt] Life Cocoon; Effuse That macro alone can combine 4 spells into ONE KEY.
      I hope to hell you read this, I'd love to help you out a little there, man!

    I would just like to ad that if youre comfortable with targeting your party with keybinds already to dispell or heal, having 3 separate macros for them is not necessary. Dispell is on the global, so you can change targets while the global is ticking and not lose any downtime healing your target. It adds extra buttons IMO

    Someone further in the comments wanted a macro the could utilize the [help]-[harm] commands while also being able to direct a self heal if needed. Figured I'd put this in a slightly more visible spot as a new comment just in case.
    /cast [help,mod:shift,@player][help,nomod]Riptide;
    /cast [harm]Flame Shock;
    #showtooltip Riptide
    (The spells are of course inter-changable, however what comes after #showtooltip will be the default icon/tooltip on the bar)
    One major downside however, it requires a modifier key.
    If you want to use this on hotkey E, the self-heal requires that shift+E be completely unbound. Meaning it can't even be bound to an empty action-bar...
    If anyone has knowledge to fix this aspect, or even just to tidy the code up, I'd really love to see it fixed.

    Pro's usually have a better looking interface than default Blizzard UI, too. I have have WeakAuras tell me when I need to do what so I can focus on doing everything else. As for focus macros, I just have a single macro with shift or alt modifiers in them for focus/arena1/arena2/etc. This lets me use only one of every button, thus leading to higher visibility since there are less buttons clogging up my screen.

    While i do like the @ cursor macros for totems i fidn that you can miss the radius of the totem because you dont see the reticle. You need to see the circle for cap totem for example to see if you're going to hit two people
    that being said if you dont need the accuracy to 100% or if you are just really good at estimating, then its great

    Technically you no longer need focus macros. Blizz built in Focus target keybind as a modifier, so you can set a button like SHIFT as your focus modifier, and then hit your keybind for a button and instead of applying that to your target, it'll modify its application to your focus target. It's freed up so many action bar slots now because I can any single one of dozens of keybinds to my focus target.

    wait what? I thought reason why you have several of the same spell on your bar because of the shitload of macros, ie heal arena 1, heal arena 2, heal self macro? where do you then manage to place all those spells? and how the hell did you manage when 5s was a thing?

    • @IamNemoN01
      @IamNemoN01 6 років тому +1

      Where do you place all those spells?
      I use an Orbweaver with a Naga. I have one button on the Orbweaver as a modifier for the Naga. Just push that button and it switches or toggles all the Naga buttons over to a new set. That second set is nothing but PVP macros. This gives me over 24 buttons on the Naga alone (my normal set and a PVP set). Plus I have over 20 buttons on the Orbweaver that I can also double with the click of a button. Together with the scroll wheel and the side buttons on both devices, this gives me a approximately 70 spells at my fingertips (and I could potentially double that number as well). The more you use them the more they become second nature.
      That is how I manage to place all those spells.
      The Orbweaver/Naga setup is superior to keyboard bindings. Keyboards were invented and designed to type LETTERS & WORDS. It was invented when video games weren’t even an idea. People have adapted keyboards to gaming only as an afterthought, when there was no other options. Peripherals like the Orbweaver and Naga were invented/designed for the select purpose of dominating in video games.
      If you don’t want to use such devices “because blah blah blah”, then just continue to be dominated by those who do.

    • @jamesh7876
      @jamesh7876 6 років тому

      IamNemoN01 while you make a good point, and I do agree that an orb weaver may be superior after getting used to it, I’d still argue that certain keyboards may be even better. Depending if they have buttons to the left or above the QWERTY row, other than numbers, how convenient the ctrl and alt keys are to press while hitting another button, and your own muscle memory on being able to ctrl+press other keys nearby the wasd keys are important. You can get a lot of macros out of 1-4 and qeszx let alone extra keys, or with longer fingers that can hi f and c or further plus addition buttons to the left of the qaz row. Given the nature of ctrl and alt you can program just as many buttons as you would have on a game pad, and retain the muscle memory you’ve built your entire life using a computer.

      @@IamNemoN01 damn! You're the first I've heard talk about the Naga. Rhe second I saw it I knew how much of game changer it would be! And damn it has been. Can never go back to anything else. Never having to take your eyes off rb screen and the speed at which an can cast or start spamming a new ability before it's off cooldown is shocking.
      Oddly, I've shown all my friends and coworkers that play MMO's and they all agree they couldn't possibly get use to the Naga or that they don't see it being beneficial in any way. Blows my mind!!!!!

    • @IamNemoN01
      @IamNemoN01 6 років тому

      James H Each to their own, right? :)
      However, in my experience, playing on a modified “gaming keyboard” is tantamount to putting a spoiler on an SUV and expecting it to be able to keep up with the Supercars. The supercar is designed to go fast. . . Even putting your hand on an Orbweaver, it’s like sitting in the seat of a high end sports car where the seat is molded to fit your body - unlike a keyboard that is flat, the Orbweaver is contoured to your hand, which is not flat.
      As far as there being keyboards out there with extra keypads on the side. Yes those can be good. But they suffer from the same problem as the game-specific peripherals - the average person doesn’t see why they’re any better than their standard keyboard. They can’t see that having keys in a straight line is more ergonomic than staggered keyboard keys. So while you’re right that those keyboards give one an advantage, most people will still argue that it doesn’t matter.
      But most of those people also don’t know what a macro is, so I suppose the entire argument is moot.

    • @jamesh7876
      @jamesh7876 6 років тому

      IamNemoN01 Id argue the staggered nature of standard keyboards really isn’t that big of a deal. The lack of buttons is the deal breaker. Not having an extra top row or anything left of qaz is what bothers me. Ctrl and alt can really change the game though. My interrupts used to be C, crown control ctrl-c, depending on the class. It makes sense to me to overlap certain spells using the same key with a different use

    Quick question for you Cdew. If you include your modifiers ( shift, alt, etc) how many keybinds do you have total. I feel like I am running out of space and I don’t have these dispel party1, 2, etc.

    • @Klyptic
      @Klyptic 6 років тому

      Really helps if you have a mouse with a good amount of buttons on it. My mouse has 12 buttons on the side not even including shift/ctrl modifiers.

    • @cstevey
      @cstevey 6 років тому +1

      The mouse with extra buttons is the biggest factor. I have the naga 2015 edition which has 12 on the side and 2 extra on the top. So those alone are 14 not including mousewheel keybinds (if druid: use mousewheel for changing forms to get out of dazes etc.) so thats 14, then with shift its 28, ctrl is 42, alt is 56. Then if you do ctrl+shift it goes to 70. Then its even more if you add in V, Z, F, Q, E, R, T, S, and some others. Then include shift, alt, and ctrl. And then shift+ctrl. It gets to be well over 120+ binds.

    • @baller7387
      @baller7387 6 років тому

      how do you fit all those binds on your interface?

    • @cstevey
      @cstevey 6 років тому

      Biggest way is addons. I use ElvUI. Lets me add up to 6 different action bars all with 12 max buttons per bar. On top of that I have my pet bar and stance bar (pet for hunter/lock etc. and stance for warrior, druid, monk etc.) So the actionbars alone give me about 70 or so buttons. After using them for so long on a single character you also get pretty used to where things are so I end up hiding most of the bars except for the ones I need to see CDs. But for that you could also use WeakAuras and have a whole other bar just for your CDs. With addons it gets pretty easy to fillup your bars especially as an arena player when you need a focus macro, a target arena1/arena2/arena3 macros. Gets pretty deep when you really look at it.

    I tried using the help/harm macro, found it a bit buggy at first where it didn't seem to work as intended then later figured it didn't act the way I wanted it to
    I took one of your other macros to sort of combine them so it works more like when you press the individual keys
    #showtooltip Tiger Palm
    /cast [harm] Tiger Palm; [target,help,exists] []Effuse
    What I found was it wouldn't cast the help ability on myself unless I was targeting myself while normally the individual ability should cast on yourself without having to actually target yourself
    Some of the bugs or at least what seemed like them I happened to encounter before was this macro just not doing anything
    /cast [help]Effuse; [harm] Tiger Palm
    I tried to copy it as best as yours was and then got it to work after I think pressing effuse and tiger palm individually, I'm not too sure why these macros work like this but it was just pretty unclear at first and I just wanted to explain my confusion and how I attempted to solve it

    hey cdew i have recently changed to arena target 123 keybinds to asd. you mentioned in your previous video that you use shift mod to silence and ctrl to stun on those same keybinds asd. how do you achieve this without needing 4 different macros per ability? or is that how you do it but you hide most of them to the side?
    oh btw i still find mouseover useful for DoTs. as you mention it makes targeting pets in arena easier as well as dotting up lots of targets in BGs and PvE too. the macro i use is a focus macro on shift modifier with a mouseover macro added in... otherwise it will DoT your regular target as normal. i only use this for my DoTs though it could apply to heals or ranged dps abilities with ease.
    #showtooltip
    /cast [@mouseover,harm,nodead][modifier:shift, @focus, exists, nodead][] Shadow Word: Pain

      I will help you out and no need to call me a hero, for there is no need :)
      Copy paste this, into a macro. I am assuming you are a shadow priest, so I will set up this macro for your targetting, silencing, and Mind Bomb. This macro is not exclusive to a shadow priest, any class and spec will work perfectly.
      /target [nomod] arena1
      /cast [mod:shift,target=arena1] Silence
      /cast [mod:ctrl,target=arena1] Mind Bomb
      By pressing A by itself you will target arena 1, if you press shift A you will cast silence on arena 1, and if you press control A you will Mind Bomb Arena 1. If you want to change the spell you can just delete what i wrote and put your own spell in. If you want to add arena 2 and arena 3 all you have to do is change the number. I will add an example just to make sure you understand.
      /target [nomod] arena2
      /cast [mod:shift,target=arena2] Silence
      /cast [mod:ctrl,target=arena2] Mind Bomb
      All I did was change the numbers. and now the above macro should work for your arena 2.
      If you have any more questions please reply and I will get back to you shortly

    • @serfiver254
      @serfiver254 6 років тому

      Joey Richi hi joey thanks for the reply my main problem is that by using the nomod line arent you negating the fact that asd are keybound to target arena 123. If i use that macro i would disable the functionality of pressing A twice to target an enemy pet...

    • @Zamix69
      @Zamix69 6 років тому +1

      Actually, pressing A twice would not target your enemy pet if he had one. I think Cdew was talking about your party frames. Like if you had your friendly party1 to A then pressing it twice would target his pet. So my macro should work perfectly for you still. As long as you are using my macro to target, and CC enemy arena targets.
