Godzilla Minus One (2023) Movie Review: The Salty Nerds think the hype for this reboot of the Godzilla franchise is way overrated. Well, some of them do. The Nerds dive deep into this Japanese monster film starring everyone's favorite atomic lizard and some Japanese actors.

I just got around to watching it and I thought it didn't live up to the hype at all. Wasn't bad, wasn't great.
I fall against the popular view....for me definitely a bit overrated. Everyone sings the praises of the character development, but for me it was a bit too much. Some of the character stuff could have cut down and the movie would have been fine. Outside that the Godzilla parts were fantastic. But all this talk of 'movie of the year'?...no imho.
You just can’t deal with the fact that Godzilla finally had human characters that were actually good and can be people you cared about.
@@YourMid740 I don't disagree, definitely cared about the characters, but it was a bit too much. Like I said, they could've trimmed it down. Some of it just kinda dragged for for me. There's a difference between a Godzilla movie with good characters as a background base, and a character movie with Godzilla in the background. This to me felt more like the latter. Godzilla shouldn't be a subplot in his own movie.

Best Godzilla -1 review in the history of humankind
Shin Gozillas atomic breath scene spoiled me, Godzilla Minus One was good, but there wasn’t a single scene that blew me away or made me jump out of my seat like Shin Godzilla did.
My 16 year old son said the same thing. Said it was ok but def coulda and shoulda been better. When I asked how was it, the first thing he said was ,” Ehhhhh”

The human drama on Godzilla Minus One is hacky and reminded me of garbage anime like Sword Art Online. The characters are not believable or well written. This becomes obvious when the scientist doctor appears and its clear that he was meant to be a cartoon character
That's the danger of all Godzilla movies. The human drama is very difficult to pull off.

This movie is super over hyped. It’s not a bad movie, it’s just “good”. I really loved how the story was about a human seeking redemption and I also love the realistic scientific way they try to kill Godzilla by giving him “the bends” but was it just me that they couldn’t escalate/ climax the Godzilla scenes right? With the exception of when he uses the atomic breath the Godzilla scenes just felt like, he was just, “there” no build up or tension honestly. I also really disliked the score. Not the Godzilla theme, but the soundtrack throughout the whole film, it also felt like it didn’t climax either. This movie is a 6/10 for me

I’m glad y’all weren’t comparing it to the overall MonsterVerse. Because they have the budget for it and I’d see people making comparisons that MinusOne was better than all of the MonsterVerse is a bit disingenuous. You’re talking about a US budget to a Indie Filmmaker from Japan at that. But it was Excellent it gets a 96%. I will say this however. HOLLYWOOD should have been embarrassed because for $15 or Million it looked outstanding! Although maybe the slight exception could be made for OPPENHEIMER. Also this movie was mostly depressing and in some instances a bit too heavy in some places.

I guess they can’t compete with the CGI and fights of the Legendary series so they stick with symbolism, nostalgia and weird. Godzilla is all CGI but also looks like a muppet at the same time.
What’s next? They had Godzilla attack Japan in the modern times and now the past and used real world events as the driving symbolism of each film.

We actually kind of liked that this Godzilla was reminiscent of the "man in suit" trope. Kinda funny and cool at the same time.

If I did have any complaints with Minus One it’s I would’ve liked the Tokyo attack to be a tad bit longer. Still love the film and what it brought to the table.

I'm going to see it this weekend! I completely agree that we've been fed hot garbage for so long some of us may not be judging modern movies/tv shows/games etc on what was considered merited excellence in past decades. Glad to see that fact not being overlooked here. We should never be blinded by eagerness for anything that doesn't contain woke/sjw bullsh** as automatically Oscar worthy. Nor should we give entertainment a pass if they "sneak" in less woke messaging than they could've done.
There's zero messaging in this movie. It does have themes it explores but they don't distract from the story. Most people love this film but it is being heavily praised when it's simply just a good, solid movie and not "the best ever."
I think the fact that it was made in another country explains why this movie was super overrated but also the fact that we haven’t got a really good big monster movie (excluding Godzilla) where they are evil and a good story with the humans too so this movie is really good the only thing that isn’t great is the cgi which again also makes since because it was on a 15 million dollar budget

Asking as visiting for the festive holidays and would like to know a good Theatre to go to. Keep up the great work! 👍
Galaxy theater Green Valley is basically our home base theater. Sometimes we go to the theater at the South Point Casino as well. It’s just not quite as comfortable.
Minus One was good for many reasons.
First was it made us care about the human characters. In the 2014 Godzilla, I couldn't care less about any of the humans I just wanted to see kaiju fight. Same with King of the Monsters, I didn't really care about the "family drama" I just wanted to see Ghidorah and Godzilla go at it. The anguish the protagonist feels for NOT killing himself during the war is what gives him PTSD.
Second, it was done on only a $15M budget. They didn't up the budget to just make Godzilla look better with longer shots. Quality over quantity.
Third, it was basically a remake of the original. Godzilla is a force of nature, he is not here to defend the Earth or fight off another kaiju, he is like a Living Natural Disaster. The setting of just after WWII from the Japanese perspective was something American audiences haven't seen before.

If you want to see a slow old school Godzilla check out Shin Godzilla. But that still managed to be less boring despite him walking at a snail's pace. He had plenty of charm.
It's definitely on our list.
The fact the english version is paywalled (can only view on streaming services) says a lot! I don't watch movies and read subtitles (laziness and malicious greed on the producer and corporate end IMO)! If I wanted to read a story I'd get a book. Do a general public DVD/Blu Ray release dubbed with a language selection option and I may rent or buy it. Until then not seeing my money!

I fell asleep like 3 times during this. Its a love story with 3 appearances from a giant lizard in the background. When I go see Goodfellas I expect gangster stuff. When I see Star Wars I want to see space ships and lightsabers. When I see Harry Potter I expect magic. By the same token if I go to a GODZILLA movie I expect to see more than 15 minutes of GODZILLA in a 2 hour movie.
Yeah, there should have been a bit more Godzilla in a Godzilla movie.
Godzilla made every appearance matter. If anything, the lack of appearances means nothing as Godzilla was annihilating each and every scene.
@@YourMid740They seem to think that the monster should be on screen all the time. Even the best SFX will fall apart if you watch them too long and this movie only had a 15M budget. The Trex in Jurassic Park was only on-screen for 2 minutes and is still absolutely amazing and terrifying. These people probably think Jaws didn't have enough shark and don't get the concept of suspense from the unknown.

@@-Bill. at least Jurassic Park had more Dino’s, you’re pointing out just one. What’s the total screen time of all the Dino’s? Jaws the Shark was always present. This was a love story with a giant lizard in the background. Godzilla was 2nd fiddle in his own movie.
And the STORY was about the Dino’s the whole time. The story of Jaws was about the shark. The story of this mostly was not about Godzilla. It was his PTSD with the love story mixed in.

I saw it with my mother and father in RDX, it was one hell of an experience, my mom isn’t too crazy about Godzilla/Kaiju films but she actually loved it, the movie was brilliant, emotional, suspenseful and action packed, it left me in awe and I wanna see it again.

After being blown away by this film, I realized that almost everything I've been watching coming out of American movies / Hollywood for the last decade or two is absolute overpriced garbage (with exceptions). I think we here in America, are just embarrassed that Japan showed us how its done on a ridiculously low budget. American theaters are now wanting to extend the limited release in order to make up for the revenue loss by feminist driven garbage like the Marvels and other woke lecture driven films.
Both Japan and South Korea have been eating Hollywood's lunch lately.

Just saw it after hearing 5 months of hype. The special effects were well done for a movie of such a miniscule budget. That's about where my enjoyment ended. I wouldn't watch it again.

I gotta hard disagree, other than Godzilla 1954,1984,and shin most are Vs. Movies and move away from the original vision of franchise which isnt a bad thing those vs movies arw what got me into Godzilla, but notice how a majority of films are vs nuanced like the solo films? This movie is being held in such high regards because a human story hasnt been this well done since the original 69 years ago thats how long it took to get another godzilla movie with perfect godzilla and human story balance as well as get the anti war message across but this film also shows the value of life amd how life it worth living even in the harshest times thats why this film is being praise so highly, i have nothing but positivity for this film after seeing it never has a godzilla film of all things made me emotional and this one did it, im sorry you didnt like it all that much

I'm not just a Godzilla fan I'm a big Kaiju fan. I liked this movie. I like it a whole lot, but I don't love it. Yes, it is a bit overrated.
I like "Shin Godzilla" more because it was different. Godzilla was an allegory for the Fukushima disaster and he mutated like a Pokemon monster into a force of pure destruction.
However, the best Kaiju films aren't even Godzilla movies. The best Tokasatsu movies ever made are the Heisei era Gamera Trilogy from the 90s.
It isn't even close. I even prefer the Daimajin Trilogy from 1966 over most of the Godzilla films. Samurai movies where a giant stone god shows up in the last 20 minutes to wreck 💩 real good.

Minus One was also different. Instead of tackling nuclear weaponry, it tackles trauma and PTSD and unlike Shin, actually had characters with real complicated personalities.

Well, there were some slow parts to this film. But it really came alive when Godzilla was on the screen!
Dude, this is crazy. You have to tell your hosts TO SHUT UP AND STOP INTERJECTING so much. At around 2:50 minutes when you could barely get a sentence out, I nearly stopped watching the video. I get it, this is just informal friends talking, but conversation has a flow, and when someone is waiting to hear a person express an idea, and that idea KEEPS getting delayed over and over, it's incredibly annoying. Tell your cohosts a few interjections are fine, EVERY NOW AND THEN. But CONSTANTLY blurting shit out when other people are talking is a dumb way to conduct a podcast, particularly when they aren't saying things that are important. Edit: ok 6 minutes in and I'm out of here, I can't take it anymore. The conversation is too disjointed and all over the place and you all have ADHD or scroll tik tok so much that you can't stay focused on a topic for more than 15 seconds. You guys aren't trying to put on a good listenable podcast, you're just winging it, without much care for quality, structure, flow, or professionalism. Good luck with that.

I think many American audiences might not totally “get” the stylized nature of this film. It is essentially an art film and a bit of historical fiction and cultural reckoning. (Spoiler alert:) The idea that the mechanic didn’t want him to kamikaze is so important for example and represents how the Japanese people have evolved when it comes to the value of life.
The acting style is not the Stanislavsky method we are so used to seeing. It is more of an old melodramatic style and it is very effective in my opinion.

It wasn't that good. I think it's ridiculous nobody was speaking American and can only guess they made it foreign to try and save money because of the budget cuts. Personally I found it very distracting, unrealistic and have no idea how this fits in with the other films. Hopefully the next one gets a bigger budget and we can get back to everybody speaking properly
