I'm at half a dozen 'well actually's, which is usually my threshold to respond in the comments: yes, apparently the Japanese version of King Kong vs Godzilla is on the bonus disc of the Criterion set. It wasn't on the same disc as the movie itself, which is where you usually find alternate versions, and with 45 movies to watch, the last thing on my mind was bonus features. So I suppose the record has been set straight.
Terrific video ranking the films of the Godzilla/Kong franchises Dan. I wholeheartedly agree with you on the top three. I have Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002) at four and Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack (2021) at five, respectively. I have Godzilla vs Destroyoah (1995) at six followed by Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), King Kong (1933), Peter Jackson’s King Kong (2005), and Godzilla (2014). Godzilla Minus (2023) is my all-time favourite.
Just FYI....the criterion collection does have the Japanese version of KKvG. It's a bonus feature on disc 8 however. Admittedly confusing for those that don't know.
Godzilla Minus One stands on the shoulders of giants. It takes the tropes of so many previous monster movies and seamlessly weaves them together with cultural authenticity and a consistent cinematic tone.

In defense of the 2005 film, Peter Jackson initially wanted the original Anne Darrow to deliver the final line of the film, but she passed so Carl Denham delivers it like in the original film. The fact that he lives is in my mind important because it goes with the theme of shattered dreams and that life comes and snatches them away.

While I don’t entirely agree with with some of the rankings on this list, I really appreciate how you not only took the time to sit down and watch all of these movies, but also took the time to write brief but informative reviews for each film. As a longtime kaiju fan, I’m glad we live in a time where film critics are taking kaiju movies more seriously, becoming more open-minded to the genre’s wide variety of themes and concepts, and putting in more time and effort to review them as actual movies.

I vividly remember your negative review of KOTM back in 2019, so color me absolutely surprised at how high up your list it made it. Loved to see that knowing the context of all the Godzilla films helped you reevaluate KOTM on rewatch because yes, if you knew what happened it's easier to see how effective of a love letter the film is to the franchise as a whole. However I always understood as a standalone movie why it didn't work for people especially if one goes in knowing very little about other Godzilla films.
Yeah, as a lifelong “Godzilla” fan, it’s my incredibly subjective favorite film of the Legendary ones thus far (I haven’t seen “The New Empire” yet, though), although I do like them all. I just rank them differently than most other people and it always pains me to see KotM get dogged on, but maybe I’m more biased than I realize or I just have shit taste, LMAO. That being said, I do recognize that the human element in that film resonates with me more than most, and that, like you and OP noted, it’s definitely a better Godzilla film than it is a standalone movie. It just has a special place in my heart. :’)💖
Since Human parts almost suck always in MONSTERVERSE series, however KOTM doenst even have good Monster Fights. It looks cool on 1st shot..m where they start fighting. Then its all Cuts and shaky and cut to humans again etc. VFX is the best outta all after Godzilla 2014

For what it's worth, Kong: Skull Island is probably my personal favourite of the ones I've seen. Fun Fact: Jack Black's Carl was not the original plan to say the iconic "beauty killed the beast" line. in fact in his original 1996 script Peter Jackson had Carl on one of the planes shooting down Kong and dies. Jackson wanted it to be Fay Wray in a cameo saying the line. but sadly 8 years later when the movie was finally getting made Fay Wray was too sick to film the cameo and I believe died a short well after the films release. So instead they had to go with plan B which was keeping the orginal Carl Deniem saying the line.
This was a great watch and very interesting. I've never really cared too much about these classic Godzilla films but this deep dive has motivated me to check some of them out. Also I loved how you capped each film review with a hilariously out of context scene lol. Really great job and hope to see more long form videos in the future! ✊
You included "King Kong Escapes"! Thank you, I was pretty sure you wouldn't when I started watching this. (Once again demonstrating you excellence.) For me, (started watching (and being a fan of,) "Kaiju" movies in the sixties. (Watching "Ultra-man" on Japanese Language TV out of San Francisco. Note I do not speak Japanese, and my dad's an Aussie, and mum is Canadian, eh. 2nd Note: Also included an appearance of a modified Godzilla suit (Jirahs).) there are two types of these movies, the good ("Top-Tier") ("Godzilla" (1954), "Shin Godzilla" (2016), "King Kong" (1933), and "Godzilla Minus One" (2023),) and the fun (pretty much all the rest.). I've enjoyed watching all of these, but it's "the good" that I re-watch and truly enjoy. (And my compliments for seeking the Japanese version: I have both the "dubbed" and "subbed" versions of Shin Godzilla; and I've watched both several times, and note and appreciate some of the differences.) As always, thank you so very much for the videos. I would rate "King Kong" (1933) higher. I had dismissed it, till a couple of years ago when I gave it a rewatch; and I was reminded of, what I think, was a great film with excellent story and characters. And I might ('Might') have had a different Top 3 order, but the same three.
Dan, if you've got about 2 minutes, there's a Godzilla vs. Bambi short out there on UA-cam. 10/10 destruction. Thanks for going through all these films!
Wow. I love Final Wars, but I recognize why some G-fans don’t like it. Though I never thought I’d see it ranked below the awful anime movies. Edit: Holy f*ck, I didn’t even realize that meant even Godzilla vs Megalon would be ranked above Final Wars. Wow, G-fans really view all of these movies very differently.
What a ride, Dan! Thanks for the effort of actually making a visually engaging edition job and not just using another TierMaker™ list. You gave me a lot of fun stuff that I had no idea to use in nerdy trivia conversations with my friends (such as the first appearance of Godzilla's theme and fanfare) :)
The best part of the Anime Trilogy is the backstory of the movies, which is covered in the opening of the first movie in like 2 minutes total. Why couldn't we have gotten those movies?!

Shin Godzilla My top 3 are easily interchangeable with each other.
This is great, Dan thanks for making this video! I used to love watching Godzilla movies with my Dad, and I thought Godzilla Minus One was one of the best movies I've seen in years, especially in black and white. This video brought back some memories and now I have some movies to rewatch!
The Jeff Bridges one gets extra credit for nostalgia from me, as the first movie on saw on the big screen as a small child. Even at that age, I learned a lot about myself when I saw Jessica Lange. Saw "Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla" at the drive-in as a triple-feature with "The Car" and "Alligator."
The number of movies is much smaller, but it would be fun to see one of these for the "rival" Gamera series. I've only seen the 1990s trilogy of Gamera movies (Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, Gamera 2: Advent of Legion and Gamera 3: The Revenge of Iris), which are pretty fun (I personally think the second one is the best).
Watching the original Godzilla for the first time is a pleasant surprise. Considering how campy the movies get, finding out that Gojira is a legit great movie with a powerful message comes as kind of a shock
I really appreciate all the hard work you put in making this and as a life long Godzilla fan it was very enjoyable hearing your thoughts on all the movies.
I rarely watch videos this long, and never in one sitting, but between my personal love of godzilla and Dan's killer combination of eloquence and humor I could not stop watching this!
Final Wars came out when I was in first grade. Had that DVD on constant repeat! Still love it to this day but obviously Shin Godzilla and Minus One have raised the bar from what we’ll expect from the King of the Monsters going forward
Kong skull Island was so good. I loved it when I first saw it. The human characters are so well developed, the pacing is excellent, and I just loved that the B-list characters in the original Kong movie become the A characters.
Usually I don't comment. But I want to encourage you to make more of these. I love your long ranking movies. The badman ranking was a nice movies guide for what to watch during the pandemic. I hope watching the godzilla/kong movies will be fun without a pandemic raging outside.
My dad used to take me around to various blockbuster's around our area to try and find new Godzilla movies we hadn't seen yet. I was obsessed with Godzilla as a kid! Lots of nostalgia from this list! Thanks Dan!
I have been watching godzilla movies since I was a toddler in the 80s and have been a big fan my whole life. A lot of these reviews brings back that joy and wonder I had as a child watching giant monsters destroy buildings and each other. Thanks for the quality content and the nostalgia Dan. Your the best. 😊
So much fun! I have never been a huge fan of either franchise, but have watched the most recent Legendary films. Hearing your appreciation for them and the breakdown within their own universe has encouraged me to at least check out some of the films in the top 10. Looking forward to more franchise rankings in the future!
Final wars is so fucking insane and the bad elements loop around to be being fun as hell to me, my fav guilty pleasure movie but I've never watched it sober so that affects things Im sure
I dislike Cranston's death in G14 because he gave the best performance in the movie and actually had an emotional connection to Godzilla and the muto's. It honestly doesnt make sense that he was killed of so early and replaced with his son.
I mostly agree. I’d rank Godzilla 1984 much higher, putting it and King of the Monsters (I just love Kyle Chandler in it and the epicness) in the good films category. I’d also move Destoroyah up a few, because it’s the perfect ending for the Hesei era and the only movie that wraps up the series overall well. I might also move Raids Again up. The snowy setting was pretty unique and I like the characters. Otherwise I can’t complain. I think there are two absolute masterpieces in the series, which is the OG 1954 and Minus One. They are some of the best films ever made. Full stop. Those two might be interchangeable at the top, and I can’t argue with Shin Godzilla being third. I also agree that Gareth Edwards take is underrated, even if I could have used more Bryan Cranston. Early Monsterverse was just excellent.
You know Peter Jackson’s CGI was top notch when the Kong fighting Dinosaurs clip is the most watched on Universal’s youtube channel Edit: top 3 videos are actually all clips from the film

(And my compliments for seeking the Japanese version: I have both the "dubbed" and "subbed" versions of Shin Godzilla; and I've watched both several times, and note and appreciate some of the differences.)
As always, thank you so very much for the videos.
If he saw Return of Godzilla then he saw the Bambo short at the beggining or on the dvd
I have been waiting for this ever since I noticed you logging them all on your Letterboxd! Hell yea!
Final Wars is good popcorn action fun to me. I'll take it any day over the techno babble anime movies.
@BBoy4040 oh god yes. I'll never watch those again.
Can’t believe I have seen almost all of these. As a kid, I loved Godzilla and Gamera movies.
Great ranking! Enjoyed the video!
The best part of the Anime Trilogy is the backstory of the movies, which is covered in the opening of the first movie in like 2 minutes total. Why couldn't we have gotten those movies?!
Haven't clicked a video so fast in a while, excited to see where your ranking ends up!

Amazing video Dan 🔥 that’s a TON of work and we appreciate it
One of your best videos. Underappreciated on your channel! May this video have long legs.
This was such a fun video. As a life long fan it is cool to see someone who is new to the franchise have fun with our King of the Monsters.
Watching the original Godzilla for the first time is a pleasant surprise. Considering how campy the movies get, finding out that Gojira is a legit great movie with a powerful message comes as kind of a shock
Please also try the original Mothra. It's not AS good as Gojira, but I think still earns its place in cinema history.
I really appreciate all the hard work you put in making this and as a life long Godzilla fan it was very enjoyable hearing your thoughts on all the movies.
Talk about going the extra mile. More like the extra marathon.
Great video, incredible work.
43:46 🤣🤣 Also loved the baby Godzilla running joke.
Fantastic video Dan! Please make MORE like this!!!!
Great video Dan, I could only imaging the editing time that went into this, not to mention the days of watching all these films, wow!
Kong skull Island was so good. I loved it when I first saw it. The human characters are so well developed, the pacing is excellent, and I just loved that the B-list characters in the original Kong movie become the A characters.
I’ve seen AVGN’s monster Madness Godzillathon series so much that I half expected Dan to say Godzilla vs THE DESTROYAAAAAAH when he got to it
These are my favorite Dan videos! Loved this!
You really did your homework on this rundown on the Godzilla/ King Kong universe. Bravo.
Usually I don't comment. But I want to encourage you to make more of these. I love your long ranking movies. The badman ranking was a nice movies guide for what to watch during the pandemic. I hope watching the godzilla/kong movies will be fun without a pandemic raging outside.
I can't believe "Final Wars" is ranked so low and 1986's "King Kong Lives" isn't on the last place... :/
God I love Dan Murrell and I hope he gets a million subscribers
At this rate I'll get there in about 30 years, give or take.
Thank you so much for this, absolutely love your rankings videos. Great work as usual🥃
5. King Kong 1933
4. Shin Godzilla
3. King Kong 2005
2. Godzilla 54
1. Godzilla minus one❤
So much fun! I have never been a huge fan of either franchise, but have watched the most recent Legendary films. Hearing your appreciation for them and the breakdown within their own universe has encouraged me to at least check out some of the films in the top 10. Looking forward to more franchise rankings in the future!
When I was a little kid Godzilla final wars was always my favorite
Excellent work, as always! Love the effort you put into these longer videos, it always shows.
This is a great video! Makes me want to rewatch a bunch of Godzilla movies, thank you!
I definitely love the cheese more than you, I love Final Wars for instance. But just a lot of fun to hear about them all like this.
Final wars is so fucking insane and the bad elements loop around to be being fun as hell to me, my fav guilty pleasure movie but I've never watched it sober so that affects things Im sure
Time to do all of the James Bond films!!
I dislike Cranston's death in G14 because he gave the best performance in the movie and actually had an emotional connection to Godzilla and the muto's. It honestly doesnt make sense that he was killed of so early and replaced with his son.
Wow, what an undertaking! Thanks for a great look at all these films and for compiling some cool stats for us data nerds!!
You know Peter Jackson’s CGI was top notch when the Kong fighting Dinosaurs clip is the most watched on Universal’s youtube channel
Edit: top 3 videos are actually all clips from the film
Final Wars and Astro Monster are incredible, boost them up to 26 ish :P
Minus One is my number 1
Amazing video Dan, would love to see more of these long form videos!
