I love your point here. I got a pretty large investment now and I stare at my investment app going up, so I keep investing, but I'm very scared to get into high value items (Over 1.000$). I feel like they are hard to sell for money and not trade for other stuff, that you then again need to sell or trade until you can find something that actually sells often. My take on this are booster boxes, I love them as they are fairly cheap, goes up and down pretty often, so can be acted upon. They sell quick and they can even be opened for the fun of the hobby. I've recently decided to sell my old psa slaps, cause I'm too scared of being stuck with goods that can't be sold fairly quickly. I'm mostly a sealed collector, but have a fairly large collecting of psa slabs that I'm unsure about.
These are good points. Booster boxes are extremely liquid. Probably the easiest thing to offload if needed, unless the cards you have are very mainstream.
the way i see it is i would only buy something with hopes for it to hold long term/increase if i were personally willing to keep that item for life. I just recently bought a first edition romance dawn booster box (one piece tcg) which to this day is one of my biggest purchases even if still quite low compared to some of the insane price points this hobby sees. I bought it because i wanted the item for my collection and don't intend to sell it , i do however think it is also a product that could be highly sought after later down the line.
At most you’ll 4x your money holding it for more than a decade. That isn’t a real “investment” or even a gamble, it’s a low risk low reward singular box.
i think the sport market is even crazier, at another level financially speaking. (some) People through time had always had excess money , they used to buy painting or any objects of some forms of rarities or beauty at astronomical prices... Now the world is flush of money with historically high numbers of people with higher purchasing power... not sure if we are also witnessing a generational shift in the collectibles market... maybe we reached a peak for pokemon or any tcg or its the beginning of an era ... time will tell
