    I was born in 1996 so i went through the initial wotc era which is still my favorite, however, i will agree that EX era stuff is just more rare, people dont realise it yet how underprinted EX sets were compared to something like jungle,fossil, gym sets etc.. e-readers were shortprinted and crystal cards are on the level as gold stars... EX and DP era was like a lost era since by 2004 everyone pretty much moved on to yugioh or beyblade or other hobbies, pokemon just wasnt a fad anymore, the last set i remember as a kid that i liked was Team rocket returns, beautiful set, and after that i moved on to yugioh and pretty much stayed with yugioh till 2008, 2009.. even though i agree EX era cards have a potential to be much bigger than they are, i still think most of us grew up with wotc after all

    the issue with investing in pokemon is visibility, ex era is so much less graded and printed where just by exposure there's so much less eyes on them. Like grabbing them for my personal collection but buying new alt arts on a dip or things like the moonbreon that are plastered everywhere will always have way more liquidity and interest sadly. maybe a 10yr time capsule / personal collection will see some gains but currently its quite stagnant id invest elsewhere if I was looking solely at roi.

    • @athleteantiquities
      @athleteantiquities 6 місяців тому

      I absolutely agree. I think Mid-era will always struggle with exposure due to how short-printed they are comparatively. Collectors seem to not care too much about population which is absolutely okay. Modern cards are beautiful and like you said, plastered everywhere.

    You talk WAY TOO MUCH and obviously do not know much about football or how to pronounce their names. and the rookie base cards have them in their college uniforms and airbrushed because they did not agree to terms with the NFL or the card set. The all pro cards and the pro visions insert cards that you knew nothing about are pictured right on the front of the box. SMH just open boxes and cut your time down.

    • @athleteantiquities
      @athleteantiquities 6 місяців тому

      Of course I talk alot, it would be silly to silently open card packs. I thought it would be fun set to open because I love the simplicity of the background which is fairly uncommon in the space. If you would like to watch someone silently open packs at blazing speed this is the wrong channel for you, and your negativity and hostility is quite unnecessary. Enjoy the hobby, and take care :)

    You bring up excellent point that Pop report is only based on how many of those cards have been sent in to be graded. It does not ultimately show you how much you can get for a card. Better judge of that would be sold items filter on ebay.

    Great points, I think what most of these cards have in common is the price are affordable to most collectors. A card like Charizard I’m slightly bearish on staying at post-2020 prices.

  • @touta2647
    @touta2647 9 місяців тому

    I started collecting more seriously last year. I've decided to make a 1-251 Pokédex binder. It's very fun. It creates a natural space for interesting (un)commons and other cards that would be difficult to fit in a binder/display otherwise, and no rearrangement is needed. I end up getting a lot of cards from my favorite sets but I don't feel forced to buy cards I don't like just to complete a set. It also made me fully realize I don't have any interest in the later generations with a few exceptions so I'm preparing to get rid of all those bulk and rares.

    • @athleteantiquities
      @athleteantiquities 9 місяців тому

      Sounds like an awesome binder! is there a particular era youre focusing on, or anything that catches your eye?

    • @touta2647
      @touta2647 9 місяців тому

      At first I planned to just use my favorite singles regardless of era and no full art/V cards, but I soon found that makes for bad aesthetics as 1) the size and frame style of the art part vary a lot between sets/eras, and 2) if all cards on a page are regular cards and there's a single Dark card (or simply a card with a very different art style), it catches all the attention. So I think choosing a main era/artwork style is necessary, and a few full arts/V help balance the different card layouts. Most are from Vending, Gym, VS series and e-reader. However, the Dark cards from Ex Team Rocket are some of my top favorites, so I plan to make a "Dark", sinister binder later.

    I agree with most of the points you made in this video. I like Charizard, but he's not one of my top favorites by any means. I actually made a list of my top 50 pokemon once and I ranked Charizard in the late 20s, so he's in my top ~30. Not to be cliche, but my favorite Charizard artwork has got to be Base Set. You actually didn't mention my second favorite Charizard, which is the Plasma Storm secret rare. It's the artwork + the card design combined that really do it for me - with the textured gold border and gold fire energy symbol behind the text, plus he's shiny. My third favorite is the delta species from Crystal Guardians - especially in reverse. I don't own many Charizard cards, I actually have a raw copy of your #1, but unfortunately it's got pretty significant damage. Still looks good in a binder though.

    • @athleteantiquities
      @athleteantiquities 9 місяців тому

      not cliche at all, base set charizard is an amazing artwork and it deserves the attention it has, especially compared to other base set holos, many are just a portrait with no action shot, save for gyarados!

  • @purpleraikou

    I think pokemon is so susceptible to these market swings because of how young the collector base is, and because of social media. Young collectors tend to purchase more with emotion than they do with fundamentals. And social media has caused a sheep mentality, where everybody is collecting what they see advertised on social media the most, so that they "fit in". Now that I've been back in the hobby for 6 years, I've learned to go with the flow, and not FOMO. I wasn't buying much in 2020-21, because I knew the market was mostly driven up by hype, which was unsustainable. Now that the hobby is settling into a "new normal" I'm all in. If things go crazy again, I'll probably take a step back and wait for the next dip. But because of how young the hobby is in general, there isn't much historical data to base decisions off of, making it extremely difficult to predict what will be trendy next.

    yea I recently sold off about 3k worth of raw NM cards that I collected from 2018-19, so that I could put that money into new, more focused collection goals. I reentered the hobby in 2018 and over the first couple years, I accumulated allot of cards that I really liked at the time - but aren't as important to me now. And now that I've spent much more time in the hobby, figuring out what I truly love and what's most important to me, I've been able to focus in on my priorities. I've definitely learned quality > quantity is my preference. So it felt very satisfying to condense ~200 raw cards into a couple graded cards, that are much more important to me.

  • @purpleraikou

    I am thankful you made this video, because it made me reevaluate my opinions on every ex set, and my order of favorites changed quite a bit after doing so. I grew up with WotC (the last set I remember opening as a kid was ex sandstorm, before I "grew" out of it), so that's what's always been most nostalgic and familiar for me. But putting nostalgia aside, I have come to love the original ex era just as much as wotc, if not more. You're one of the few people to make videos taking a deep dive into this era, which I really appreciate. It's hard to find collectors with similar interests/mind set, but I appreciate your approach and have been catching up on all the videos I can (only discovered you a month or 2 ago).

    Great price analysis, really shows how crazy the Pokémon signature market is currently. Honestly I'm not interested in artist signatures. Even if the prices were reasonable all the extras added are a turn off IMO. What I think is that some people in the Pokémon hobby are always wanting the rarest piece that exists. That's why a black label Beckett is so much more expensive than a raw copy, because it's more rare. A Pokémon card is worth the amount of what someone is willing to pay for it. So this combination of an open market and Pokémon fans desiring a special item causes such a high price I think.

    • @athleteantiquities

    Hi, first of all. Thank you for putting the time in to research the prices. It does provide such a wonderful perfective. I'm extremely interested in investing in collectables/stuff that preserves value (Books, lamps, stones etc.) and I'm always searching for things to put my money in that has potential to grow with time or just preserve wealth and can be enjoyed. I've never invested in autographed Pokemon Cards, way to expensive for me. I'm gonna keep an eye out on J. R. R. Tolkien and Nelson Mandela. @@rasmusbertelsen6129 I try not to give specific investment suggestions, but my main train of thought is I first settle on a topic I really enjoy, then I look at things available related to that topic, then the more I research the more I find the niche things that nobody is talking about, and I buy what feels undervalued. As an example: I am a Pittsburgh Steelers fan so I wanted a cool steelers item. I was combing through steelers items from cards, to autographs, to posters, etc but nothing stuck out to me. Then I came across a story of how in 1943 the Philly Eagles and Pittsburgh steelers had trouble putting together a team because of WW2, so they combined into a team called the Pennsylvanie Steagles for only one year, so I looked for a cool item from that year and found a player's autograph with an inscription that mentioned it.

    Good video topic. I'm very deep into the hobby, I appreciate allot of the niches. With that being said, I'm not a fan of autos. I think most of them look kinda bad and hurt the esthetics of the card. To me, the artwork itself is already the signature of the artist. I even feel the same for sports cards. I appreciate their work and the entertainment it brings me (whether it's sports or art). That's what I value. I don't value them writing on my cards. Speaking of this topic, I just saw another youtuber post a video at the exact same time as you about fake signatures entering the market.

    The answer is yes of course it does and always will. What you have pretty much said is that the new cards have better arts so they are better as a collector. While that is true to an extent, that does not change the fact that something being older and rarer and in mint condition in ANY tcg does make it better from both an investing and collecting standpoint. Hey look at my 2 dollar card printed last week that has 10 trillion mint copies of it out there or look at my 22 year old card that has very few mint copies of it out there. Yeah it might not look as cool visually but the other reasons put it over the top. BUT, at the end of the day collect what you want doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

    For me rarity Its not important at all I have a very small collection (14 cards) I only buy cards I really really love As example I have a PSA 8 Aquapolis Lugia and a PSA 9 Unseen forces Lugia ex I also have a regular Lugia v and a theme deck unseen forces Lugia I love the 4 cards the same regardless of price or rarity, we should only care what is important to us, In fact once I buy a card I don’t mind price fluctuation, It could plummet to 0 and that’s fine by me I don’t sell them anyway.

    I’m really not reselling anymore. I only grade what I like for my personal collection, and that is mainly modern inexpensive alt arts and full art trainers. They are the cards that I enjoy. I got out of the way of thinking that is I should be buying and collecting what the community approves of, and started collecting for myself a long time ago now.

    Buying records from obscure bands can be like this sometimes. Me and my buddy like this band called The Tubes (70s/80s rock) and he got a record signed by band members for only like one or two hundred bucks. Sometimes, if you go to see obscure bands live in concert, you can just ask them to sign your records after the show. The venues they perform in are often very small. Compare all this with getting a record signed by The Beatles. Original Beatle LPs signed by all four members go for eye-watering prices these days. And they're probably only going to go up in value. Hell, even getting unsigned first pressings of Beatles albums can cost you hundreds. It's crazy.

    I am so personally devastated by the halo mega line being so gutted. I used to live to see the new sets in stores. When infinite launched i was hoping for a longer merch renaissance. I even got into the jazwares 4 and 6 inch lines. Now it is borderline impossible to find anything new for any of the 3 lines

      Yeah it’s sad to see it go downhill. Hopefully a new game revitalizes the brand!

    Breweriana has some things that are so low supply and so expensive/difficult to ship it is really impossible for them to be transacted online. Sellers don't care to sell since they won't net anything and then the risk of shipping. Nice video. Definitely a largely dying hobby that I am involved in specifically focused towards Schultz and Dooley, webco stuff. But there is still value in a lot of that moreso than broad breweriana as far as I know at least.

      Interesting perspective! I’m not familiar with that line but I’m sure it’s along the same lines. So hard to sell and therefor so hard to buy which keeps the whole market suppressed

    I’m a newer collector, 18 months in. I’m refocusing too, quality of my collection vs size of the collection. I’ve sold a lot of my bulk and am focusing on cards I like and iconic cards from each block
