The answer is yes of course it does and always will. What you have pretty much said is that the new cards have better arts so they are better as a collector. While that is true to an extent, that does not change the fact that something being older and rarer and in mint condition in ANY tcg does make it better from both an investing and collecting standpoint. Hey look at my 2 dollar card printed last week that has 10 trillion mint copies of it out there or look at my 22 year old card that has very few mint copies of it out there. Yeah it might not look as cool visually but the other reasons put it over the top. BUT, at the end of the day collect what you want doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.
I’m really not reselling anymore. I only grade what I like for my personal collection, and that is mainly modern inexpensive alt arts and full art trainers. They are the cards that I enjoy. I got out of the way of thinking that is I should be buying and collecting what the community approves of, and started collecting for myself a long time ago now.
Ive been collecting 15+ years. I already have old holos, gold stars. So dont seek more. My favourite cards of all time are full art that display well and catch peoples attention. Zekrom pika alt, mario pikachu full, solgaleo lunala gx alt. Art is so much better now. Rarity and eye appeal now
For me rarity Its not important at all I have a very small collection (14 cards) I only buy cards I really really love As example I have a PSA 8 Aquapolis Lugia and a PSA 9 Unseen forces Lugia ex I also have a regular Lugia v and a theme deck unseen forces Lugia I love the 4 cards the same regardless of price or rarity, we should only care what is important to us, In fact once I buy a card I don’t mind price fluctuation, It could plummet to 0 and that’s fine by me I don’t sell them anyway.
When you find an older card in super hight grade for a crazy low price it doesn't hurt to pick it up because your literally holding a minty piece of history but from an art standpoint yeah modern does it better and way easier for everyone regardless of income level to get into which was why it was so successful in the wotc era because it was about having fun enjoying the art ..not graphs and stats trying to get the best advice from a sketchy pandemic poketuber on how best to retire off investing the hobby lol
