I discovered this song (not this video) about seven years ago and one of the first few things I noticed was, I think our American song about wearing a yellow ribbon comes from it. Also there is a song about the tricolor ribbon (Irish) which seems to belong to the 1916 rebellion. But the green willow probably came before both of those.
I remember seeing her perform with Steeleye Span at the Berkeley School of Music, and then later with simply a keyboardist at Johnny D's Uptown in Somerville. I approached her with an ancient Steeleye Span album and asked her to sign it. She could not have been more gracious; asking me about myself and introducing me to the keyboardist (I wish I could remember his name). Lovely person.
My Irish grandmother gave me the 45 record to this song about 30 years ago and I was impressed with the song then and still love it! British band Status Quo did a great cover of it since then and Maddy Prior sang on with them live which was fantastic and gave me chills
This takes me back to the mid-seventies when pubs had jukeboxes. Me and my friend Eileen went to the pub at lunchtime and had one too many drinks and we played this record and were singing & dancing around the pub, then everyone was joining in. Rather jolly, we went back to work but was quickly fired. Eileen was my best mate at the time and she sadly died in 1990 but i have some great memories of us having lots of fun and laughter and of course, good songs like this one.
Love this and the version Maddy did with Status Quo. She was bouncing round the stage with Quo and really enjoying herself. She's a real fun character as well as a brilliant, brilliant singer
I was 16 when this came out and I remember my schoolmates being into it more than I was. I now realise how wrong I was - on so many levels it’s possibly the greatest song of all time.
Me too, Matthew. This was just everyday musical fodder at the time as there was so much talent around in those days. Now, in hindsight, much hindsight, I realise how skilled and talented Steeleye Span and others of the era were. Today's rubbish is so artificial and/or electronic noise.
"possibly the greatest song of all time" Definitely not as good as all that, but it is certainly a commercial peak for the group and for folk-rock. It did involve creative compromises for them, though, not least working with Mike Batt.
One of the best songs I ever heard in my life. I thought at turning 50 this year I had heard all the classics, even though in 1975 I was only a toddler, but I'm in to 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's music. I had heard of Steeleye Span but didn't know their music. Then one day last week 'all around my hat' started on my you tube playlist. I immediately checked to see who sang that wonderful song, and I am now a Steeleye Span fan. Maddie carries herself with such grace and the other band members are great too. Love from Ireland to Steeleye Span.
Steeleye Span was a joy to hear and behold. They had a long-time friendly competition with Fairport Convention for best folk-rockers of their generation. The new generation of British folk-rockers draw much of their inspiration from Steeleye Span.
Forgotten the number of times I've seen them back in the day. Love Maddies voice - so pure. Rest of the band are great too. Oh! Playing the tapes in the car and singing along. Those were the days. Haven't seen them for years. Came across this by chance. From a 72 year old.
Just brilliant good fun folk rock. Saw them at Colston Hall ( hope I’m allowed to say that now!) in Bristol singing this about the same time. Maddy had half the audience dancing in the aisles .
Ipswich folk festival 1970, great performance by Tim and Maddy. I sang next and at the Guthrie verse "come with dust and gone with the wind" a storm nearly blew all the equipment away. Maddy held a pint of ale, she smiled at me and asked "Where's the loo?". I was 19 so It was all exciting. (72 now...)
Real musicians and vocalists playing amazing music, think I must have seen Steeleye five or six times at least. Maddy came to The Village Pump Festival many years ago and after she had performed she came and sat down in the middle of the field with everyone else and watched the other performers, at one point she got up and did this amazing dance to a fast fiddle number, totally brilliant
And absolute proof that one can exude sex appeal from the stage while totally clothed. A concept that's totally lost on the likes of Pop Princesses Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Ariana Grande.
I went to see Her and the Boys in Brighton 1974/75ish................. she danced around the stage like Graceful Pixie on a Cloud of Sea Fog (all night long!!)...................... Fab, and she's still making Magic to this day. Outrageous !!! ☺ xx
Had vague memories of this song from my youth (I was 6 in 1975). It was pure joy rediscovering this years later. The harmony is breathtaking and Maddie’s voice is as pure as a mountain stream.
Researching for my Yule radio show I stumbled across this video, I've enjoyed many Steeleye shows over the years, every one a corker and very memorable. Maddy's voice is the best. As I left for home after one gig, I heard the sound of the band performing a rock standard - after a full show! That's a band that enjoys their music.
I was introduced to them by a friend of mine . always loved them and all the "English Electric Folk" Groups. .Thanks for the Internet we can go back home .... for a while.
Bear in mind that all the sounds on that album are as heavily treated as mid-seventies recording equipment would allow. (It was taped at AIR Studios in Oxford Street in summer 1975; George Martin was able to equip his place with up-to-the-minute kit.) f you want to hear Maddy's voice fairly pure, I advise listening to one of their earlier, more basically recorded albums.
I was 16 when this came out, just left school and starting out on the great road if life , ain't she sexy , ain't she fit, great sound , fancied her then and still do and still love the song 🙂👍
I saw them at a folk festival in Essex around 1973. Maddie put her beer down on the stage and my mate drank it. When she finished the song she picked up the empty can and bellowed "Who's drunk my fucking beer?" My mate sheepishly owned up. I can't remember if he bought her another. It was a long time ago.
Reminds me of being 11yrs old again, buying sweets from a room in a grubby house outside Maes Yr Yrfa school in 1976, a slightly rough woman had the idea of a tuck shop and got half way there! lol, what a school..... great days with good mates and fun teachers who cared.
I didn't hear this until 1978 and thought it was an 'oldie' from three years before. Here we are in the next century still listening to the same music since the industry is totally broken.
Aah, I see ... that's why.. this is making me wanting to play Tubthumping by Chumbawamba out loud ! .. though they do have some other drinks besides the cider ... "we'll be singing ''
Blimey. I'm watching Robson Green weekend escapes and this tune crops up as part of a wellness therapy . Brilliant. Southampton University 1971 and I was there to see them. Thanks for the memories.
I was at a folk festival near Chelmsford around 1970 when my friend Kevin picked up Maddie's beer can off the stage and drank it. When she picked it up after finishing the song and realised it was empty she screamed "Who's drunk my fucking beer?" Kevin sheepishly admitted it. Never forget that. Haha!

Nah status quo version crap this is the real deal with steely span maddie great voice did they do any other songs were are they from
This takes me back to the mid-seventies when pubs had jukeboxes.
She's so cute in this, I was born 20 years too late -_-
Love this and the version Maddy did with Status Quo. She was bouncing round the stage with Quo and really enjoying herself. She's a real fun character as well as a brilliant, brilliant singer
Maddy Prior had stage presence right from the start. One of those things that can be learned, but some are born with it.
"possibly the greatest song of all time"
Definitely not as good as all that, but it is certainly a commercial peak for the group and for folk-rock. It did involve creative compromises for them, though, not least working with Mike Batt.
bellow the salt. El mejor LP de la historia. The best lp in the word history of music. An 64 years old spanish man.
I sang next and at the Guthrie
verse "come with dust and gone with
the wind" a storm nearly blew all
the equipment away. Maddy held
a pint of ale, she smiled at me and
asked "Where's the loo?". I was 19
so It was all exciting. (72 now...)
Loved listening to this in the 1976 hot summer 👍🇬🇧
Maddy is a friend of a family friend. Lovely woman happy to sing at birthdays etc for free.
She can come to my birthday anyday
she has that voice, she should always sing, never speak. 👍😍
@@christophermartin7927 One of the sexiest women ever!!!
You're so lucky ♥️♥️♥️
I recently bought a boxed set of all five Steeleye Span albums. They were the best of the British folk rock bands. Maddie Pryor's voice is glorious.
"They were the best of the British folk rock bands." Or American.
"all five Steeleye Span albums" They've released a lot more than five.
Effortless
misterteaification Yes, at least seventeen in fact (I’ve lost count).
@@misterteaification Mikey joyfully stated he'd bought a boxed set of 5 albums. Hopefully he will find even more thanks to you. 🪕🎶
maddy pryor...beautiful voice...great song!!!
Song kicks ass. Wonderful harmonies and powerful rhythm. Booyah!
Aw. This was my birth year. What loveliness was occurring and I was oblivious to it at the time!
I HAVE NOT HEARD THIS FOR YEARS BUT NOW IT IS IN MY HEAD AND I CANNOT STOP IT MADDY IS UNBELIEVABLE
Amazing song with great instrumentals and incredible vocals. Not forgetting to mention that Maddy Prior is an absolute babe.
WAS an absolute babe, a tad wrinkly these days still got the voice though
"amazing song" Actually a conflation of two songs - and this is edited down from the album version, to the point where it becomes incoherent.
@@normaneustice1112 happens to us all my friend
And absolute proof that one can exude sex appeal from the stage while totally clothed. A concept that's totally lost on the likes of Pop Princesses Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Ariana Grande.
@@normaneustice1112 Like Charles Barkley says, "Father Time is undefeated."
I went to see Her and the Boys in Brighton 1974/75ish................. she danced around the stage like Graceful Pixie on a Cloud of Sea Fog (all night long!!)...................... Fab, and she's still making Magic to this day. Outrageous !!! ☺ xx
One of my earliest musical memories. I'm now 46 and still love it.
Haven't heard this for years. Loved it back then and still love it today.
Had vague memories of this song from my youth
(I was 6 in 1975). It was pure joy rediscovering this years later. The harmony is breathtaking and Maddie’s voice is as pure as a mountain stream.
The beautiful Maddy Prior. Great song.
Oh sweet jesus, Maddy is absolutely beautiful, jesus her smile, her body, what a beautiful lady. I could listen to her sing all day long...Wonderful.
I’m obsessed with this tune.
I was introduced to them by a friend of mine . always loved them and all the "English Electric Folk" Groups. .Thanks for the Internet we can go back home .... for a while.
Another Roger Green liked them in the Glos. folk scene in the mid late seventies
Mady Prior - what a beautiful voice, way back in 1975.
I remember her in 1970 and almost 50 years later...

Well said.Lovely voice.
Come for the 70's disco outfits. Stay for the awesome British folk rock.
I was 16 when this came out, just left school and starting out on the great road if life , ain't she sexy , ain't she fit, great sound , fancied her then and still do and still love the song 🙂👍
The singer reminds me of my lovely aunt Margaret who is no longer with us, such a kind caring lady.
Folking brilliant. My mum and dad loved this 👋☘️
I’m 20 years old and I love this so much!!!!
A wonderful amalgam of the old and the new. Loved it in the 70s and love it now.
This song makes me smile...I makes me want to dance round a may pole and swig cider in the sun on a summers day....
CIDER! yes absolutely a cider song!
Ria666 great great music but don't wait until summer to swig the cider
aaaaarrrrgh well said me beauty
Aah, I see ... that's why..
this is making me wanting to play Tubthumping by Chumbawamba out loud !
.. though they do have some other drinks besides the cider ... "we'll be singing ''
it dont need a summers day mate!! lol
Blimey. I'm watching Robson Green weekend escapes and this tune crops up as part of a wellness therapy . Brilliant. Southampton University 1971 and I was there to see them. Thanks for the memories.
Had to be a hit! The inspiration goes way back in time.
Haha!
I used to hear this on the radio a lot when I was a child in the late 70s and it always stayed with me. It still sounds brilliant and I love her sweet voice
This was played at my 29 year old nieces funeral recently , everuone took to the floor and sang along . Not a dry eye in 5he house. Rest in peace johan x
My condolences sir. 🤗
What a voice. Absolutely brilliant
i remember i heard that song in 1975 and i did'nt know who were singing it, i live in Belgium and didn't know Steeleye Span at that time there was no internet to look at and it was very frustrating. So i'm happy to hear it now !
