That's interesting because I was thinking about buying an African twin. I hear these do have good suspension but there's no way they have an off-road capability of the Africa twin which for some of the commuting I'm doing I definitely need.
They are generally good for 250,00 miles with very little known problems I have a 2005 and 2008 . The 2008 is slightly longer and higher geared .. Valves check once and forget about it for 100,000 miles . Yes they are heavy but thats not problem above walking pace . Im only 5 7" short arms and legs but it works for me . Ive done 17 hour days in Australia and really could not complain of being sore afterwards , you just have to know how to do distance . The Police In Australia have used them for years and they run them for 60,000 miles , according to police that ride them very little goes wrong .
That is an 04' model, with front turn signals integrated into the fairing. The 03' had stalks for the front turn signals and were not sold into the U.S. market. I have an 04' model and have owned it for a little over 10 years. 40,000 trouble free miles on the ODO and many multi-state tours. Excellent bike!
Hello, i ride a 2003 FJR and its an RP08 the first ones are RP04 and with the years it goes up. Awsome Bike drive it Dayli and dont want anything else. Greetings from Germany.
It's a pretty proven platform. The guys who have seen to love them. I get it has a boat load of torque but I was always surprised it didn't come with a 6speed.
If you compare a FJR with a Honda, please compare it to the ST1300. That ST is from the same era. If you want to compare it to a ST1100, a few facts (and I know both Honda an Yamaha): yes the FJR has more power, yet how important is that for a tourer? The engine on the Yamaha is very, very sweet. In my mind absolutely nicer than the Honda V4 (ST 1100). However... the centre of gravity on the ST 1100 lies very low. And as such the ST rides (in my experience) easier than the Yamaha. It is also a more 'lazy' bike. To me the Yamaha is more sport and the Honda is much more tourer. Quality wise I find them very similar and both very good. My advice: buy both 🙂.
I think about a road touring bikes a lot, but get distracted by side roads which are often turn into gravel so it's hard to make the move from an adventure bike.
Ill take a ADV bike over street bikes any day. With some of the crazy power plants they are putting in these ADV bikes now, if you want to go fast you have that option.
I'm looking for one here in the UK, prices are all over the place. Only one I've seen that sold was on eBay , a 27k miles 2001 in mint condition went for just over £2100; which is what I want to pay but everyone is listing beat up ones for £4k to £6k and they aren't selling lol ..
I was looking at a Used FJR and ST1300. The FJR is sportier and quicker but the ST1300 has more lower end and comfortable. Both have plenty of power. I went with the ST1300 because the weight makes it more stable on freeway. I know the FJR is lighter but I dont feel it. I had a hard time finding a low mileage FJR at the price I was looking for, A 2007 ST fell into my lap for 5K with 24K. The FJR looks good without bags the ST looks like crap. But I just keep them on.
@@jetstream454 Just rewatched it. A bit of both. As I highly doubt the suspension has received the love it deserves as to take proper care you need to throw away the manual as at that distance travelled the suspension oils should’ve been replaced at least 3 times and by now have full components (springs etc) replaced at least one.
I have a 2012 FJR . Only has 19k miles on it. Absolutely love it . The only problem is , its leaking oil from the front fork. Mechanic said this is not serious. ok
Hi John, I have just had my fork seals replaced😁, had been leaking for a while😬😢. Bought news seals from a yamaha dealer to change DIY. Took forks of bike & gave them to a local bike shop to change😳, as I didn't have the correct tool to remove the old seals. Job is done😁, & the bike goes round corners on full lean without the front wheel bouncing away from me now😁😁🇬🇧🇬🇧
Great info cool bike but please don’t post videos normalizing crossing double yellows. If you can’t keep it in your lane you’re riding outside your abilities.
43k miles on one of these is nothing. Mine runs like a top at 90k miles . In a few years I’ll get a lower mileage one if it shows signs of slowing down otherwise I’ll keep ripping it
Unfortunaterly, I can't enjoy most sport tourers because I have to occassionally stretch my legs out while I ride (arthritis). And the fairings on most sport tourers won't accommodate adding some forward foot pegs to make that happen.
Sorry to hear that. Thankfully we have so many options now when it comes to bikes and if you want to go fast some of these ADV bikes are getting kinda wild.
@@AdventureTomek Very low maintenance bike. liquids and tires and brake pads, the only thing i changed is the cam chain tensionner. might do the cam chain and guides over the winter

The FJR
RP 04 2001 - 2002 without ABS
RP 08 2003 ABS standard from now on
RP 11 2004 - 2005
RP 13 2006 - 2012
RP 23 2013 - 2015
RP 28 2016 - 2020 ( 2020 Ultimate Edition )
so the 2001-2002 doesnt exist?
Even without being on a "budget" I'm thinking of trading in my $23000 Africa Twin and going with one of these for a while

Valuable info and well done.
Although, stay in your lane Bro. It’s a good habit to have.
I'll stick with both my Concours. The 06 is a brillant bike, and my 1400 puts the FJR to shame.
FJR still a cracking bike though.
You are right Sir. Fantastic bike, reliable and easy to ride. Good vid.
I have a 2014 and my wife has my old 2007.. both have been flawless..... and yes 150+k is very possible.
They are great bikes
Hopefully getting an 05 model for 1000 part ex on my old bike. This will be my first big bike! Quite exciting
Nice! You will enjoy it
Great vid! I have a gen1 05 FJR with about 47 or 48k miles on it. Its a great bike and definitely carries the weight well.

Just picked up one for $3100. Could’ve gotten it for less but I was pretty happy with it and it was well maintained.
Nice! Congrats, enjoy the bike
How lucky would you be to find these under $3k lol. Not in this post COVID market. It is an amazing ride tho. 🤘🤘
I found one in my area for $2,600 with 49k, looked decent
@@AdventureTomek that's an amazing find. Ones in my area are $5k+ since covid. Guess I need to look out of the state for better deals haha.
Sounds amazing with that Remus exhaust
What's not to love. Great color
This is a cool bike. It always was. Keep it up mate. Here goes my like.
Thanks a lot!
Would love to pick one up…. thinking about it. Personally though, I think you’re riding/driving shows no concern for others, let alone yourself.
It's a pretty proven platform. The guys who have seen to love them. I get it has a boat load of torque but I was always surprised it didn't come with a 6speed.
The XJR also has a 5 speed, never missed that 6 th gear.
Aren't the 2015- 6 speed?
No.2015 is a 5 speed. 2016 and up are 6 speed! 2016 to 2020 had a manufacturer recall on the transmission.
Just picked a 2009 up with only 8600 miles, got a great deal on it too
Nice! Congrats on the new bike!
I ride a 2013 Harley switchback, thinking of making the switch to one of these something with a little bit more power and a bit more comfortable😅
*_I will make a move to a touring bike someday, for sure. But not today. Thanks for sharing. The bike sounds incredible._*

Definitely something wrong with the set up of the suspension. Never seen a bike spend as much time on the wrong side off the road.
Looks more like a skill issue tbh

They will definitely outlast some the new bikes out there
Nice review man. When I searched this bike I had a lot of bmw 1200rt show up in the same price. Have you rode one of those for comparison?
I have not had a chance yet

I have highway pegs on my FJR and I can stretch my legs. They’re mounted on engine crash bars. R-Gaza and T-Rex make them.
@@scottbollinger3999 I have some on my bike too. I love to stretch out.
Crossing the centre line is not cool...ever
wish thats all they cost over here
Would you recommend this bike to a beginner?
Just all depends on how comfortable you are on a bike currently.
It's not a good bike for a beginner, 650 pounds is hard to lift back up when you drop it. Get an MT-07 first.
