I bought my 2003 FJR with about 3,000 miles on it in 2004. I rode it another 180,000+ miles with very, very few issues. Just stuff that normally wears out. The bike had a lot of life left in it when it was time to move on. It now lives at the Barber Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, Alabama.
@@brianyoung4863 I always wore proper riding pants and seldom felt the heat except on extremely hot days. On really cold days, I would drop my left hand down close to the engine to thaw my fingers - seriously.
Great description. I currently own a gen 1 and looking to upgrade to a gen 2 or 3. I thought the heat issues were fixed on the gen 2 but after listening to your description it sounds just like my gen 1 heat issues. Does your abs work? I heard that the abs modules could stop working if they are not serviced regularly? Thanks for a great video
Went with my brother yesterday, and he bought a 2007 FJR1300. The Bike was bought from the original owner, and it had only 2200 miles(low Miles). The back story was that the owner bought it, and then had medical problems. He wrapped it up and put it in storage(correctly), then just taken it out to sell. Brother paid cash at $6500, and the bike looked brand new and ran great. We had street bikes before, but this bike is nice. Now am looking for a bike like it, so I can ride with him (We are Identical twins)! Cheers
@@PierreClavie oh man awesome story! 👍🏻 What a find, a practically brand new bike. I hope you can find a really nice one also! I’d love to see a picture of you guys with the same bikes that would be awesome. Ride safe and enjoy those FJR’s , thanks for sharing that with me 😊👍🏻
That's a GREAT story! I got my 06 back in February 29,000 miles for 4500. PLANTED is the correct word! Blue skies, and green lights to ya wherever you travel!
I've been fortunate to have owned four (2003,2005,2009,2014) FJR's. I've done countless thousands of miles on them and would still be riding one, but health issues forced me to a smaller, lighter bike. Thanks for taking the time to pay homage to my favorite motorcycle!
@@sg3971 Wow, 4 of them, that’s awesome! I’ve considered a 2014-2015 is the 2014 a better machine with the newer technology and features? I really enjoy smaller bikes as well, they can be a lot of fun without all the weight
@@herbiesgarage681 I don't know about "better", but in 2013 the new Gen 3 FJR offered cruise control for the first time. Then in 2016, the Gen 3.5 came out with the 6 speed transmission. I never felt like a sixth gear was needed but hey, the more the merrier. I purchased a 2023 Triumph Bonneville Speed Twin 900 and have really enjoyed it. Great, informative video! I recently bought a 2008. I love it! I figured out that the auto retract on the 2nd gen windshield can be disabled just by unplugging one cable. If you trace down the wiring for the windshield, if I remember correctly, it is to the right of the instrument panel, there is a lead coming from the windshield motor with one large plug with multiple wires and a smaller plug with one wire. Simply unplug the smaller plug and no more auto retract.
I owned a 2007 FJR1300. It was brand new in 2013 when I purchased it. I drove it until it was KO'd by a tow truck in 2017. This was the best bike. Awesome power and good response. I couldn't more suggest using this bike if your going 80mph or 160mph. Solid.
After 2 years off bikes I am going to get an FJR, had a Blackbird but had a habit of riding 150+mph. Comfort and sensibility is now the name of the game.
Be careful because the FJR can go that fast too 😂 Good luck with your search, there seems to be plenty of used ones for sale in my area. Ride safe my friend
Very informative video. I am looking for a new bike after getting rid of my BMW 1100 RT (too heavy and it was getting old!), I have been checking out the Kawasaki GTR 1400 and Honda ST 1300 and and this FJR. As usual a bit of research was required to get to the bottom of how these handle , maintenance and possible issues that could be expected. I have even spoken to police officers both in the UK and France who use these FJR daily (and used the other bikes mentioned). They could not praise the Yamaha highly enough. Not too heavy, very good handling, stable, fast, low maintenance, electrically sound and of course look damned good. So for those reasons and of course your video I think I will be hunting down my own FJR. Thanks buddy. Keep up the good videos :-) Ian
@@ianwalters6711 You’re welcome Ian! Yes the fjr is all that mentioned and is a fantastic bike for sure. My bike had pre mature engine failure and I replaced the engine with a donor engine. You can watch my FJR playlist if you want to. Link is in the description. I believe my issue was caused by previous owners error though, and not to blame Yamaha. But I wanted to share with you the possibility of this happening if proper care isn’t taken during maintenance. It could happen to any bike really. Thanks and good luck on your search my friend!
I have had 2 fjrs and 06 ae paddle shift model that my lil brother wrapped around a speed limit sign and it flew straight up and hit the power line about it. He didn't walk for a month. Then I got a 08 . I have put over 35,000 hard miles on it. Dawged it daily and it's still in the garage waiting to wallerd out again on our next ride when it warms up. Thing is indestructible!
They are a great bike for sure! Mine did kind of self-destruct though. You can watch some of the videos that I made on the experience. But I brought it back to life and I love my FJR now and it runs fantastic. Thanks for the comment
Just bought a used 2023 FJR with 2,760 miles on it, looking forward to getting some ride time in and seeing what it is all about, i have been looking at this model for some time and super excited about it.
Thank you, I don’t know what your budget is but my year of preference for the fjr is 2014-2015 years. If I buy another it will be in those years. Of course brand new would probably be the ultimate bike though 😁
@@herbiesgarage681 Some had some gearbox issues, I think it was in 2020. So, 2019, or even 2021. Have a Tracer 9 right now and a Suzuki Bandit 650. Can check everything on my channel when you can. Cheers.
@@RRRRefuelRideRace When the new 6 speed transmission came out in 2016 they had some issues that caused Yamaha to do a recall, I think it included a couple of more years in that recall. Not sure when they worked out all the bugs. That’s why I was wanting a 14-15 model. Okay I’ll check it out 👍🏻
I had a 2005, the best bike I have had. Been riding since 1958 so I have had some good ones, but theses FJRs are wonderful, as you said very stable at high speed a real mile eater good mpg and very fast!
Thanks for your video. I just purchased a used 2018. Had just 6500 miles on it. Matte Phantom Blue. It is so fun to ride and runs just like you talked about.
@@MarksGarage17 I love the blue, probably would be my first color choice. The newer models have a lot more going for them with the extra features and i will probably get a newer one someday. Have fun on it and be safe, your welcome 👍🏻
Starting with the '06 they installed a heat shield between tank and engine. This pretty much cured the heat issues on the Gen 2 as opposed to the Gen 1. Make sure your bike has the silver heat shield intact. I had an' 06 up till 2020. Then I bought a left over '19 from a dealer down in Mississippi, which I had delivered to me up in NY..... Have very little mileage on it due to 2 spine surgeries and lousy work schedules. With the little mileage I have put on it, I can say it is very very nice. I also put the T-REX cage and bag savers on it as well. Still have to mount my foot pegs..... I don't normally drop my bike, but at 65 years old, the cage savers will reduce any damage AND make it much easier to upright bike. Nice video.... Be safe out there.....
Thank you, and thanks for the comment! I do have the shield on mine, I briefly mentioned it but I had a major catastrophic event right after I brought the bike home. I purchased it used with 36k miles on it. I had to replace the engine in it with a donor engine from a 2012. Everything is good now but both engines put out more heat than what I’m used to. A small price to pay for a wonderful machine imho. I’m sorry to hear about your back, man that is definitely a setback to say the least. People in Mississippi are the best!! I heard that Yamaha went through a recall for there 6 speed transmission for a few years, did yours go through that? Just wondering because I’m considering going to a newer model in the future.
@@herbiesgarage681....... Yes. I have a 2019 and I did have to go thru the transmission recall. It broke my heart when I got the letter in the mail..... it was a brand new bike !!! This was a precautionary move by Yamaha to address a potential 2nd gear problem. To my knowledge, no one had any 2nd gear issues with the addition of another gear to make it a 6 speed . Probably cost Yamaha a fortune to do this big job. Called my closet Yamaha dealer and they picked up the bike with a pick up truck equipped with one of those strap down auto loaders. Pretty neat..... The timing kind of worked out since I was having back /sciatica issues at the time. They had bike over 2 months, but I was in no hurry, due to health concerns and I just wanted them to do the job right ! When job was done, they called me up to tell me they had damaged the heli bars bracket when strapping down bike for transport. They paid for damage and replaced the heli bars, but that resulted in another 2-3 weeks of more waiting. That was taken care of and eventually got call to pick up bike. It worked fine and no oil leaks or any other issues. Unfortunately, I wound up having to go for another back surgery last year which meant the bike would be sitting again. Got the bike in the summer of 2020 and I only have less than 600 miles on it !! Crazy..... I will be getting back on it, but I'm a little nervous to do so.... so far. I believe the 16,17,18, and '19 had the transmission recalls. No issues or problems I have heard of since. I believe the 2020's and later were fixed at the factory before being sold...... The' 18 and '19 have the Matte Blue finish. It is a beautiful color !!!
@@brianc.ditrich8401 Wow, that would break my heart also! And only 600 miles on it, it’s still got the fairy dust on it from the dealership 😁 I’m so sorry to hear about the back, I know how debilitating that can be. If it wasn’t for my chiropractor I don’t know what I would do, I’ve hobbled in barely able to walk with my back and end of walk out the same day feeling 75 percent better. I know I’m no where near your level but I could empathize with the little experience of back pain that I’ve had. I’ve heard the same, no issues with 2020 on up. Thanks for sharing all that and take care of that back my friend

I had a 2009 ST1300 which I loved, but my wife wanted something a bit "softer" so I traded it in for a 2018 Goldwing DCT which I bought new in 2020 so she'd be more comfortable. Nowadays she doesn't ride as much as she used to, and I yearn for the nimble ST, but I do love the Goldwing for it's luxury and its many toys. So I'm looking at buying a FJR for "me" while keeping the Goldwing for "us". This video was a tremendous help as I've seen 2016+ Gen 3 FJR's locally which are bit outside my budget, but I've also seen 2005 Gen 1 FJR's which have been well used, well looked after, affordable but are high mileage. I'll continue my search, here in Canada we put motorcycles away for the winter, but now in October it's a buyers market... wish me luck.
I completely understand, my wife doesn't ride anymore which is why I sold the Goldwing and I'm riding the FJR. I love my bike; I will probably take it out in the morning if it's not too cold. It was 39 this morning which I'm okay until about 35 or so then I throw in the towel. Good luck on your search, I hope you find a nice clean and well maintained FJR for a reasonable sum. Thanks for that, let me know what you get, I'm curious : )
Well - you convinced me ! I signed for a 2019 FJR1300ES this afternoon, will pick it up on Saturday. It's in good condition, I got an extended 3 year warranty on it too, hopefully will never need it. Winter is coming so I'll do a big service on it while the snow is on the ground, and come spring I'll make the decision whether to sell the Goldwing - or keep both !
@@steveharleyfan Congratulations on the new to you FJR! Sounds like you got a good one. I couldn't stand to let it sit until spring, that would drive me crazy 😆 My vote is to keep both 😂
The seat is the one thing on this bike that needs improving. I have a 2019 (Gen 3) and the fairing has some panels at the side that can be moved to channel air from the engine in different directions. The side bags have not changed at all.
@@Jagshemasher Yeah, I guess if you’ve got a good thing going why change it 😁 Seats are almost impossible to please everyone, I guess that’s why there is so many variations in seats offered. I personally like most OEM seats, although I haven’t tried the FJR OEM seat yet. 😊 Thanks
Enjoyed your review you did a great job explaining my favorite motorcycle I own a 2016 A model and absolutely love it. I’ve been wanting one ever since they came out. !
@@altec19 Thank you! I agree with you, it’s my favorite bike too, although for around town and shorter rides I have a smaller 200cc that’s easy to ride and fun also. I’d love to own a third generation bike, and would like to try a 6 speed fjr. 2016 is the first year for the 6 speed if I recall correctly. Take care and ride safe
I have the same exact bike (2007) and there are three things I don't like. The first is the vibration. I feel it in the grips, the footpegs and the seat. It's bad enough that my hands get that tingling sensation when I ride it for a few hours. I've used those foam grips, they help, but they don't hold up. The second thing is the snatchy throttle from closed to open. If you don't ride it quickly it might not be a big deal to you, but if you do when you are coming into a corner fast, roll off the throttle, lean it over and then try to roll the throttle back on the bike jerks and it can be a little unnerving. And lastly, the front end doesn't offer much feedback especially with the OEM Metzler tire. It's much better with Michelins. From what I've read on the FJR forums there is a solution and that is to have the ECU remapped. You can learn all about it on the forum, but it's supposed to fix the jerkiness and vibration plus lowers the temp that the fans come on. This helps keep the gauge from soaring when you're in stop and go traffic. I'm going to try it this Winter. I hope it does what they say. If not, I'll probably sell it and buy something else.
I understand completely, the vibration really isn’t much of an issue to me although my hands do get a little tingle as well. The jerky initial throttle is something that I don’t like and like you I’d like to try Ivan’s performance flash. I’m just trying to justify the $350 cost, I wish it was a little less expensive but I understand there was a lot of research and development that went into it. I wished I would have bought a 2014-2015 model myself. I really like the bike but the newer models are a little better refined I think.
I bought an 03 with 90k a couple of years ago. I only do about 10k a year but I would go go toronto to cali on it with put a thought . They really are a great bike. Fast at all bands. I touch 150mph a couple years for a few seconds o cecand it was still pulling .don't be afraid to by a hi mile one
Nice video. I have that same year fjr and I agree that it is the best bike I’ve ever had. I bought mine in August 2022 for 5,400 dollars with 32000 miles on it. I had all the services done including the valve checks. I love it as a daily rider and an all around fun bike. I took my side cases of and just use the OEM top box. Mine came with that same throttle lock that has been removed. It’s not a common color but when you see one you know it’s a 2007.
@@rodneybarcus2233 Hello Rodney, Thank you, yeah you can’t beat it fast fun fun fuel efficient and relatively inexpensive. That’s true about the color, it’s definitely different
This bike and the Honda ST1300 are so similar. Love both of them. I have an ST1300 and it’s been solid. I don’t think you can fault either Yamaha or Honda when you get to this level of machine.
just so people know...the reason the windshield goes back down is thats the strongest position...and the best position of you need to put a cover on the bike..i dont have a garage or even covered place to park...so i mainly have to rely on my bike cover to keep off rain and sun damage
Thank you, the FJR is a great bike and has been in production for lots of years and therefore makes it easy to source used parts and aftermarket things are plentiful.
Great video. Looking at a 09 that is a good deal (only 22k on it), but the clutchless AE version. Wish it was the standard model but may still pick it up. Your video was really helpful.
Have an ‘05 yes, I occasionally look for 6th but it’s been great, fun and plenty of power. Have risen all over the west. Best bike I’ve owned heat was a small problem, but the first generation doesn’t weigh as much and has fewer things to deal with. Great gas milage and the HP & torque is plenty for the 5 speed. 😎
Just bought a used 07 with 24,000 miles. I still have my 05 vfr but I'm loving this fjr. Heat issue is there for sure. I'm in my late 50s with lower back issues.

Thank you for your competent explanation. I have a 2003, FJR 1300, I bought the bike from a friend of mine bike mechanic in 2019 for $ 3300 with 33 000 miles. He changed the clutch, brake pads, and the seals on the forks. It was not necessary but to have a peace of my mind. Today, I just came back from a tour of 220 miles. I've Valkyrie Touring, I ve Hayabusa, but no one of these is handling the road, and the curves like the FJR. Today, I came to the curve with 130 miles, and it took the curve easy. With the Hayabusa, i do not think I will manage to ride like that. 😮🥸👏👏👏👏👏
You’re welcome, the FJR does handle super well, I’m surprised by the Busa though. I would have thought it would handle well on corners at high speed but I’ve never ridden one. I’d love to take one for a rip on a long straight away though 😁
@herbiesgarage681 My Hayabusa is lowered with "Dog bones", FJR 1300 is Factory Standard. The riding position is high, and the bike is sturdy. On the straight with 176 hp and gearbox with 6 gears, the Busa is unbeatable, but in the curves, I prefer the FJR..🤔🥸👏
Great video. I just bought a 2006 FJR 1300 with 72000 miles on it and the guy I bought it from said that it was really punchy and that it had too much power for him. He also had several bikes and went to a BMW 850 that he said he liked better. He said this FJR was just too much for him so he wanted to sell it. Your Exactly right about what you said about the throttle. That has been the most difficult thing to get used to about this bike. Its very hard to take off slow and smoothly. Well it takes off fine, but when you slow down to go around a corner, its very hard to just give it a little gas and go smoothly around the corner. Its like it takes a lot of pressure to move the throttle then when it does, it's like pow and it just lunges forward quickly. I noticed real quick that if your not very careful, it could it could launch you into another lane. Im starting to get a lot better control of it now, have just about 1,000 miles on it so far. This is my first bike with shaft drive and also fuel injected and man when you twist it this thing goes. Its a lot of bike to get control of but very smooth and powerful. I noticed also that the transmission was really clunky. Glad to know thats how its designed. He said this bike is really punchy. I said yeah it's punchy alright, punchy like 3 left hooks and a right cross all at once lol. I like the fact that its heavy and holds the road well. Definitely going to get a throttle lock for it so I can lock it in and cruise.
If you wanted to get that pesky problem with initial throttle fixed once for all then check out Ivansperformanceproducts.com for an Ecu flash. Its kind of pricey but they say it really does fix the issue and as a side benefit is supposed to help with the clunky ness and helps improve fuel economy. I am saving for the flash and will probably get it pretty soon. Enjoy that fjr, they are fun bikes, ride safe!
WOW that's very interesting. I didn't really think there was anything that could be done about it, I just figured that is how it was designed. I'm very curious but sadly not too mechanically inclined. What is an ECU flash?@@herbiesgarage681

I have owned two, 2009, 2013. I have 65,000 miles on the 2013. I had to fix second gear on both bikes (gear dogs shot craps). Ugh. Despite that I kept the bike and love it. Fast and smooth! But beware the second gear issue. I don't notice heat as much as I do on my Triumph Tiger.

I had a 2007 FJR, unfortunately I sold it last year. There is a cable you can unplug for the windshield near the back of the right headlight, then it will not automatically go down when you shut the bike off. The windshield will stay in the position you have it set at.
@@altec19 yes I’ve heard they changed that where the windshield doesn’t return to home after ignition is turned off but I didn’t know what year it was done. Thank you for the information
I absolutely love my FJR and will never part with it. I've owned two '07 FJR1300 AE models that are clutchless and I really perfer the Gen 2's the best, there's improvements over the Gen 1's but not all the electronics of the Gen 3 models making the Gen 2's more of a rider's bike in my opinion. Plus the Gen 3's were detuned a bit from 145HP to 140HP I believe. As for seats the stock seat Isn’t bad but not great for long rides depending on the rider. I bought a custom seat from "Seat Concepts" and has worked great, they take your height, weight and riding style and make a seat that works for you at a very reasonable price compared to other companies. Also I completely agree the FJR's are very stable, I can ride all day one handed at any speed. They just plant to the road like a heavy bike but yet are very nimble for their size. Well ride safe out there fellow FJR owners and enjoy.
@@Michael-to7oz Thank you for that, I learn a little bit more each time I talk with FJR owners, that’s awesome. I really like my bike as well but was really considering a 2014-2015 model. @@Wil-70-NL I have not rode a k1600 but it is on my radar and I would like to own one someday. The downfall to the BMW is cost of parts and repairs if need be. If money isn’t an issue I’d go for the k1600, otherwise both the st and fjr are good choices. The st is more goldwing like but a little more pep in its step. The st has like 125hp. The fjr is more sport bike feeling and has 145hp. Both are very dependable. It really comes down to cost and what you want it for.
@@herbiesgarage681 Good to hear that the FJR is a reliable bike. Your bike is stunning in that colour. It must be great to drive that long wheel based bike. I can imagine that. My choise for the BMW would be that V6 engine. Otherwise i would have to go back in time and grab a Honda CBX 1000 or a Benelli SEI from the late '70s. You must have driven one of those in the past ;) .
@@Wil-70-NL I’ve rode a cbx before but the only Benelli that I have ridden was a 65cc two stroke. You can’t really go wrong with any of the 3 bikes you listed.
I just looked at one of these earlier today. A gentleman a lot like yourself has quite a few different bikes and hasn't ridden the FJR in quite a while. It has 53,000 miles and he told me he'd give me a good deal, just make him an offer. Im thinking somewhere around 3000 dollars? My last bike was a zzr1200, I'm looking forward to getting the FJR. I'll probably pick it up this week. This video was helpful in making the decision.
I asked about the year but we got talking about other stuff, he did say 2010 but he'd have to look for sure. I'll find out when I go back, he lives about 5 minutes away. The bike needs to be cleaned up, it's been sitting in his shop quite a while but it did fire right up. Very cool guy, he's in his 70's and still rides a couple times a week. The bike he's been riding is an older Triumph. I'll be going on some rides with him and a couple other guys once I get the bike. We live in a tiny remote town of about 800 people located on highway 12 in Utah. Lots of winding roads through the high desert and mountains. People come from all over to ride here. It's funny seeing a group stopping here on their bikes and they all speak a foreign language!
He has a super nice Ducati, like a race bike. Said it hurts his back now. The one I really like is a ZX12 Kawasaki but he's not ready to part with that one yet. He kind of winked and said maybe when he gets a little older. I mentioned he's in his 70's but probably closer to 80.
So I ended up getting the FJR for 1000. It runs perfectly and the original owner gave me a folder with all the receipts of maintenance he's done since it was new. Turns out it's a 2004, I'm very happy with it so far.
Got a lot of sport tourers...my go to...old 2001 aprila futura..it's italian...had to pretty much rewire the whole thing...other than that.. 3 grand..ohlins rear shock ...stiffer forks...lighter than a fj - 6 speed and upper 160's flat out... but fj's are the kings of grandpa bikes...
im looking to buy a 2003 model here in Aus its got 150000 kms on it hopefully its ok i havn't had a bike for 10 years, thanks for the video very informative
@@hawksam009 If the bike was taken care of, it should be good for a long time still. Most of the time lack of maintenance is the reason premature failure happens. Good luck with it, and I hope you really enjoy it, ride safe!
I have a st1300 and was leaning towards a FJR1300 2013 for the cruise control. However the left front pocket on the ST is deep and will hold a phone the FJR wont. The right pocket hold a abus 8077 disc lock and under the pocket a denali soundbomb horn. The FJR has the battery instead. The ST panniers are bigger the top box rack is solid and wont crack the subframe and the front tipover wings on the st are wider than the panniers. Lastly having a higher dash allows a phone to be mounted above dash on the ST which is impossible on the FJR. So at the moment i cant see much reason to go with the FJR. It maybe more fun but its not better for touring
I understand completely, the Honda ST is an awesome bike as well and with 125hp is very peppy in its own right. I don't think you could go wrong with either bike, it comes down to preference. I myself prefer the extra 20hp that the FJR brings as most of my riding won't be for long range touring, and the bike holds everything that I need very well. I have heard of the front end wondering a little on the ST, the same as what my GL1500 had and that's the main reason that I went with the FJR. I don't know if that's true or not, but it scared me away from the ST. Honestly the FJR is the most stable road bike I have ever been on at higher speeds. If I was going to get another FJR it would probably be a 2014 or 2015. 2015 being the last year for the 5 speed, problems with the transmission started with the new 6 speed so I would prefer the 2015. You have valid points on the FJR so good luck with your decision and I hope that you have many safe and fun miles ahead, Thanks for the comment.
Great info. I have the gen 1 and 2- 4 years apart. I love them both a little different in driving styles . I'm thinking of changing up to a goldwing 1800 .I do a lot of long touring on main roads and countryside roads .my question is should I stay with what I have or get a 2000 reg goldwing.
@@MegaThomas121 Thank you! Honestly the GL1800 is probably one of the best touring bikes out there, if not the best. The GL1500 is old and outdated and carbureted but has the best luggage capacity. I think you would be happy with the 1800, I believe it has like 125hp and is no slouch in itself. The luggage area is smaller because they streamlined the bike over the 1500. But the bike is so reliable and OEM and aftermarket parts are readily available. If it was me, I would own both the Fjr and GL1800 😂 Sorry not much help I know 😁

If you can get past the clunking clanking rattling front end that they all have go for it.I ride to relax though, not worry about the forks leaving the bike or something which is what it sounds like might happen at any moment on every fjr I've ever ridden and I've owned a couple and riding plenty and they all made the same horrific front end noises from brand new gen 3 off the showroom floor to the oldest Gen 1 they all had the same front end noises and it's not the calipers or pads or head bearings or rotors because I literally removed the calipers, rotors, fender and everything else I could after installing new OEM bushings, fork seals, fork oil, tapered head bearings etc and it still made the same noises.I just can't get past all the racket the front end makes while the dealership and forum idiots try to convince me it's normal.Ive ridden every kind of motorcycle you can think of in the last 50 years and owned over 40 and the front end sounding like it's about to leave the bike with every imperfection in the pavement is not normal.the only time I've heard more noise from a motorcycle front end was a clapped out kx250 we used to jump all day every day and ride wheelies on when we were kids but it was noisy because it was pretty much destroyed, not brand new from the dealership.I don't care how great the bike is,if it rattles, smokes, ticks, knocks or makes any kind of noise that causes me to worry instead of relax while riding it I can't really use it.
@@billbonu1639 Wow Bill, you’re the first person I have ever heard that had that front end issue. Mine certainly doesn’t. If you lived close to me I would let you ride my bike to see how good and solid this front end actually is. I am no expert on the fjr that’s for sure, this is my first fjr actually. But I’ve been riding for 52 years and have owned over 100 motorcycles in my time and honestly this bike ranks way up there on my list. It’s a great bike in my opinion. Oh yeah, and those cam chain tensioners are adjustable.just take the middle screw out crank the bike remove the plug in the frame take a kinda long skinny flathead stick it through the frame and into the tensioner and turn it COUNTER clockwise to tighten the chain, clockwise to loosen it if it starts whining it's too tight if it starts rattling it's too loose. It's the first thing I do if I get a used Yamaha or any other bike with that particular tensioner on it and the front end noise is WELL DOCUMENTED!at least 90% clunk and clank and 100% of the ones I've seen do it@@herbiesgarage681

Could one say that even at speeds of 100 - 125mph the FJR is still gonna feel safe? Heard about ppl that took her all the way to indicated top speed of 155mph and it was still solid. In my area i can safely travel at 100+mph on the highway, thats the reason im asking
Although I’ve never been above 130 mph it was rock solid at that speed and I would imagine it would be the same at higher speeds. This bike is just very stable, well built in my opinion
I am seriously thinking about purchasing a 2024 model after some disappointing problems with late model BMW Rs and Gs Everything I read points back to Japanese reliability.
The FJR would be a great bike for you most likely. I think the last time I looked they were selling new ones for around $17k here in the US. I’ve never owned a BMW but I’d like to have a k1600 someday 😁
@herbiesgarage681 The K1600 is a machine I have lusted after bad as well. I do a lot of big kilometres in remote areas of Australia and a failure out there is unacceptable not saying they are unreliable but just a bit gun shy of Beemers now. I rode a friends 1600 couple.od times very heavy but surprisingly nimble when mobile and that exhaust note!!!! Take care
If you were to ask FJR owners they would tell you that these bikes are stone cold reliable. I had a bad experience on mine when I first bought it and had to replace the engine, I don’t believe it was a fault of the engine but a fault of the previous owner. It is believed that the previous owner changed out the cam chain tensioner and didn’t secure the chain and the timing slipped eventually causing valve/piston damage. But what I can tell you is that my replacement engine is perfect, I’ve gone through the valve adjustment and everything is spot on and I would take this bike anywhere anytime. I believe the FJR is a solid bike that is safe, fun, fast and reliable. If you were in the market for one I would just say ask a lot of questions to the owner as far as maintenance goes. As with any bike if maintenance isn’t done properly bad things can and do happen. As far as common problems, the only ones I’m aware of I mentioned in the video. The heat off of the engine and the slight off idle throttle response on the 06-08 models. It comes on very quick making it a little hard to ride slow and into corners. Ivan performance makes a flash that is supposed to clear that up as well as improve other things as well. That flash is $350, so if you look into these years just talk the buyer down so you can purchase the flash and you’d be all good. Good luck, if you have any more questions feel free to ask, thanks
I might be buying a used 05 one this weekend with 50k miles on it. Is it a smart move? I’m younger, 19, and it would be my second bike. I prefer more sporty bikes but at the moment I just need a bike and can’t be too picky.
@@domv2746 It would be a great bike but remember it does have 145hp, that’s a pretty powerful bike for a second bike. Personally I wouldn’t probably go this big if it was me but that’s something you’ll have to decide for yourself. The fjr has a lot going for it, and it’s reliable. The 05 will have some heat down on your legs, some can tolerate it some can’t. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I bought a used 2014 with 900 miles and rode it for 7-years. Awesome ride. Traded it in on a BMW F750 HS,
That’s awesome! BMW is one brand of bike I have never owned but would like to. How do you like the F750 Hs?

I had all the services done including the valve checks. I love it as a daily rider and an all around fun bike. I took my side cases of and just use the OEM top box. Mine came with that same throttle lock that has been removed. It’s not a common color but when you see one you know it’s a 2007.

@@Docdog-dd1MB That makes sense, the FJR loves the curves

It is a nice bike for sure!
I’m not trying to convince you of anything, it sounds like your opinion has already been formed. I am just sharing my experience. Thanks for the heads up and I’ll definitely keep an eye and ear open for any problems. Take care and ride safe!

I’m on my 4th FJR a 23 model , my first was a 06 , it was the 06-07 that had the abrupt throttle , I did 100k on it but the throttle really did suck , the wind screen can be unplugged so it will stay where you put it when you turn the motor off , the speedo reads fast by a lot , at least the Aussie bikes do .
I am seriously thinking about purchasing a 2024 model after some disappointing problems with late model BMW Rs and Gs
Everything I read points back to Japanese reliability.

What's the consensus about reliability? Are there common problems with older models, to look out for?
