@@CharlesFalcon12 If you hold charge beam briefly then spin jump and let go of shoot before you land, she will automatically release a beam shot when landing. If you space jump up to the puyo (the worm thing) like i do and take the hit, she will automatically release the beam shot to freeze it in the perfect Y position to clip through the ceiling. If you just "wing it" for trying to freeze it, it's very difficult to get, and reloading the room is like 12 seconds lost. Anyway, my strat here of using charge and the spin jump up was the first really consistent strat for the ceiling clip. Just started playin for the first time three days ago. Just beat Draygon. It’s amazing to see people use shinespark instead of grapple and completely skip crocomire. All the hidden missiles that I didn’t know about made my head explode.
I played the game a very long time ago and I remember how curious it made me be. so much so that I finished samosa returns 100% all by myself. The shinespark thing is insane. I've been trying to do something similar to what is present on this run yet it is hard. very hard. the shinespark on draygon is very hard to do but so satisfying once it gets done.

Quite possibly the best speed run of Super Metroid I ever saw. And to think I could never achieve 100% item pickup in so short a time frame. Excellent! 😁
+mysticinvasion Thank you! You may be aware of all this, but the reason I didn't do the ice clip to springball for so long is because it always relied on timing an extremely accurate beam shot to freeze the leech in the correct spot, and you lost ~15 seconds every time you missed it (for game time runs it wasn't as bad of a loss). It was so easy to freeze the damned thing a pixel too high or low! And this is 45 minutes into the run, after the run's major randomness - the phantoon and draygon fights. However, I recently found the setup you see here... you store a charged shot in a spin jump, and if you spin up and on the ledge the leech is on correctly (there still is some timing and jump distancing involved in it), you will get knocked back briefly before samus automatically lets go of the charged shot. The timing works out to where it freezes the leech in the perfect spot :) I was still struggling with the very difficult jump to wrecked ship etank (pausing to turn high jump off and on makes it trivial but wastes time) until twocat figured out the bombjump you see here. With those two tricks figured out, this route isn't much harder than the other one I used. The difference in this route from the old school route hotarubi and behemoth used (I'm not entirely sure the full history of it) is doing gauntlet early, right after wrecked ship. This makes for some very sensitive energy conservation in the wrecked ship where there's not much room for mistakes, but it's more streamlined routing than doing it later (before tourian). Altogether, the routing should save me somewhere between 15-20 seconds. Being able to one shot croc is the biggest time saver. There's also a new strat we came up with that I almost got in this run. At 1:00:55 , you can see a spikesuit performed. This is a pretty new trick, and you will see it used to great effect on the vastly different any% no major glitches TAS that is being developed right now. Basically, you change a shinespark, unmorph the same frame you get hit by a spike, and with a frame perfect jump input, you get a special blue suit that allows you to run with a spark stored. Messing up the camera by balling over croc's head allows you to get behind the invisible wall the game creates during the acid cutscene, allowing you about 3 free extra shots at doing this. If you miss it, you can try it two more times during the 2nd cutscene. Unfortunately, I accidentally pressed jump from a stationary position at 1:03:13 and wasted it. But the intent is to shinespark to X-ray!
+zoasty Yeah, I knew most of this, however I haven't seen the ice clip setup in action until now. Also didn't know about the bombjump to the ws etank. Very clever strat :) Also, thanks for explaining the details behind spikesuit. Too bad that it didn't work out, but just getting the setup right seems crazy enough, so still very impressive. So it goes to waste if you jump from a standstill, or are there other conditions behind it as well? It's great to finally see a 1:16/0:45 run. I remember when people though 0:45 was a potential time for segmented runs!
+mysticinvasion If you press angle up or up on the dpad (maybe jump in certain conditions) while you are in the air it activates the spark, or if you press jump on from a neutral position on the ground. It sounds a lot easier than it actually is, not to accidentally do one of these!

Every time I thought I saw an obvious gaffe, nope. There was a reason. Dmg boost, well timed super bomb etc. Gorgeous run.
I mean you can't compare a computer to a human, but I get your point -- It really is an insane run. I hope we'll see even more 100% runs, it always amazes me to see where those crazy devs hid expansion packs! I'm not sure why there is so little 100% runs, to be honest low Ice % looks a lot harder and unforgiving!! Maybe Zoast can answer this one I'm genuinely curious! Nevertheless gj Zoast you deserve the praise I tried doing what you do and it's impossible.
I played this religiously when it first came out. My first time through it ever was probably 6 hours IGT. I recently got hooked on it again because of the SNES classic console and emulators on computers. My PB right now is barely sub 2 hours for 100% (1:58 IGT). I learned a handful of tricks from you, behemoth, and oats, but still need to practice. My goal right now is sub 1:30 IGT. But, I'm still a long way off from that, because that's shaving almost 30 minutes off my PB time right now. Short charge, and a few sequence breaks are my downfall (the super missals tucked behind spore spawn still elude me, I can't get the power bomb/super missle down the small tube to work) There are a few other places that I have issues as well: - Wall Jumping up the shaft after getting the morphing ball. - The parlor after getting the bombs (I can't wall jump back up the tube and get the ball to morph into the small opening) - Same with the jump/morph ball to get the ice beam without climbing all the way up the room and coming back down. - My mach ball still sucks (HAHAHA) - And the other big place I lose time is in red brinstar. The hero shot up to the top of that shaft makes no logical sense to me, lol. I watch all of you speed runners do it, and I just can't figure it out. tl;dr: I still suck at the game, and can't figure out how you WR setters/holders can do some of the tricks you do. Anyway, thanks for the read if you did!
@@oldguyrips535 i suck at this game. i have so much love/envy/hate/rage about their skills and the fact that i dont have the time to devote to this game because i love this game. it is literally the best metroid of all time. my pb finally got to sub 2hr once and i'm trying to get back to that. right now i'm stuck at 2h05m and can't seem to get lower. but yeah i love this game even tho i suck so bad at it. can't do a mach ball in real time. can't short charge and smash draygon. can't beat maridia without the grapple beam yet. but i love it.
@@CaptainBlackass I'm right there with you. A huge part of my issue comes from lack of solid routes through Maridia & Norfair/Lower Norfair. There are TONS of tricks that I can't do, and I have to stop before I decide to start snapping controllers, LMAO!
@@oldguyrips535 I just recently started trying to figure out how to make the most of Maridia and clean up without backtracking out of Maridia to get back into it. Getting slightly better, but I definitely need the grapple beam to do it. Trying to get better at the tricks but it's frustrating sometimes.
used the emulator and the slow motion feature to do some of the tricks like mockball and the short charge. once i get better at practicing those, i think i'll be ok. finally got into the game this past week and got my PB down to 1h35m using the slo-mo to do the fancy stuff like killing kraid quickly. gotta thank Zoasty for some of the ideas. i think they helped.
My favorite game of all time 💯 this game was literally designed perfectly, especially for speedrunning. Its almost as they knew exactly what they were doing when they designed this game knowing it would be perfect for speedrunning. Literally a flawless & perfect game. Great run man loved it 🔥
KelpTheGreat because when you take damage you fly back so if you take advantage of that and look the other direction from the way you want to go and take a hit you fly back and you turn invisible because the invincibility frames
I gave up on damage boosting for years and figured it was outside the scope of my reflexes due to being told that all you have to do is face the opposite direction of where you want to go when you take the hit. Turns you you also have to be holding jump when you do it, and both of you forgot that detail.
BEST game ever. No other game would give me goosebumps and anxiety when facing an alien species like this game. So well thought of and the graphics were superb for a game released at it’s time.
Of course you can do grapple first. Most any people would be advised against a delayed grapple route, not only b/c of the Wrecked Ship Etank (and having less energy for wrecked ship), but getting to springball is also a problem.
I'm trying to replicate your run, but at 19:57 I get super speed some decims of second after you and, on the succesive room, I cannot enter the other door after the missile open it (I hit it while it's opening)... Can you give some some advices?
what does 0:45 game time mean? is it the overall time spent actually playing the game between loading and unskippable events? and is it in minutes or seconds?
Watching in slomo and still can't figure this out. At about 1:19:00. The little ball path in the wall of the big pink room. How do you manage to hit that super missile block? I can even hear the explosion on your video but for me it doesn't reach it. Even if I get right up on the tunnel.
I wish Nintendo would make a remaster of this game, kind of like what they did with link’s awakening, still “2d” but with 3d models/textures/backgrounds. Can you imagine the fun of playing this on a handheld platform with shiny new graphics but identical gameplay?
Can anyone explain how to do the springball clip at 43:12? I understand you freeze the worm-thing at the right time and then jump on it but then what? Do you just jump again and you clip through the floor or do you have to do something special with the controls while you jump? Thanks
Você tem que congelar o bicho num espaço em que dê pra você pular em cima dele e pular sobre o teto logo acima. Um pouco difícil de explicar. Tenta fazer um pouco que você pega o jeito.
I've been playing this game since it came out. I was In high school, and I used graph paper and a piece of poster board to map out a route. I think I got it down to under three hours? Maybe? But I didn't know anything about any of the exploits to speed things up. Ha! I wonder if Nintendo Power would've done a story about things like that. I was so pumped when I saw younger people speedrunning this thing and using all these crazy tricks. Watching this closely, it blows my mind how quick your fingers must be moving. Just outstanding.
Can someone please explain how the hell did he manage to get Samus's gun to shoot the little purple health things??? Like in 20:28 I've never seen her gun doing that
@@zoasty Thanks for replying. What's the easiest way to get this right? I couldn't find it on the wiki because I don't know its name. I tried searching "super missile spore bomb trick", it didn't work.
@@nuraman00 If I understand correctly, I think it's when you run and activate speed booster in a heated room without any suits on. It doesn't always happen but often does in that case.
walljump? spin jump at a wall, press away from the wall (no diagonals), then jump immediately after. jump has to be after pressing away from the wall tho, not at the same time or before.
Can somebody explain to me what 18:33 was? Was that damage boosting with some sort of back flip or what!? That is some crazy tech I need to know as to how it works

This is amazing. I'm happy to see a nine/ten-year-old playing Super Metroid. You can absolutely live up to Zoast. He is one of the best players, but that just takes a love for the game so you're willing to learn the moves you need to beat it in all these categories. I'm 31 and I've been playing this game since it came out in 1994 and I'm still learning new things every day, trying to get as good as players like Zoast, Behemoth, Sweetnumb, Kipp, Oatsngoats etc... Age doesn't matter, it's love for the game that powers you to learn all these tricks to beat it faster and better than the last time. This is one of the best adventure games ever made. Keep it up!!
Congrats. I've been playing this casually since it first came out and I never thought I'd be capable of getting sub 3:00.

Short charge, and a few sequence breaks are my downfall (the super missals tucked behind spore spawn still elude me, I can't get the power bomb/super missle down the small tube to work)
There are a few other places that I have issues as well:
- Wall Jumping up the shaft after getting the morphing ball.
- The parlor after getting the bombs (I can't wall jump back up the tube and get the ball to morph into the small opening)
- Same with the jump/morph ball to get the ice beam without climbing all the way up the room and coming back down.
- My mach ball still sucks (HAHAHA)
- And the other big place I lose time is in red brinstar.
Oh, and my best out of Ceres station is 0:32, the sub 17 second escapes seem unattainable. (like oats and his :47... doesn't even seem possible)
This must be the only game you had as a child. I never seen something beat so fast since Bruce Lee!!! Im in total awe.
Welp. I thought I was decent at the game when I got a 1 hour and 38 minutes. Guess not.
1 hour 38 minutes is better than decent. :)
That's still pretty good. I think I got like 5 hours 30 minutes and like 90% - but I hadn't played the game in like 10 years :)
Kraid
How did he get away with skipping the first boss ?
@@Struzzylive Sequence breaking is used often in speedruns
My favorite game of all time. That’s why I watched it. ☺️
Ahhh my childhood but in perfection. Butterflies
My favorite game of all time 💯 this game was literally designed perfectly, especially for speedrunning. Its almost as they knew exactly what they were doing when they designed this game knowing it would be perfect for speedrunning. Literally a flawless & perfect game. Great run man loved it 🔥
Such insane control! I've never seen this game played so expertly!
What a time to be a Metroid fan right now. Amazing run
Insane run through! #Masterpiece #Amazing #ThingofBeauty #Genius #ThankYou
Can someone explain how he turned off varia suit @ ~42:20 and enters an area that requires varia @ ~ 49:40 and not take damage?
Because of Gravity Suit
How in the world do you do that thing where you take damage from an enemy, and then teleport half-way across the screen?!
Aeolwn
HEY DUMBASS IS CAPS LOCK REALLY NECESSARY HERE?
KelpTheGreat because when you take damage you fly back so if you take advantage of that and look the other direction from the way you want to go and take a hit you fly back and you turn invisible because the invincibility frames
It's actually surprisingly simple to pull off (not that I can do it consistently). If you look back at the right moment, you'll get it. Give it a try.
I gave up on damage boosting for years and figured it was outside the scope of my reflexes due to being told that all you have to do is face the opposite direction of where you want to go when you take the hit. Turns you you also have to be holding jump when you do it, and both of you forgot that detail.
@@TheBanishedWind NO! IT'S NOT!

Well you got a fast time...but at what cost? Rest in piece little critters. j/k nice vid.
29:10 is just insane
I don't understand how he opens that door by shooting to the right. Any chance you might know why?
At 6:27, I was waiting for the SA-X to come out
BEST game ever. No other game would give me goosebumps and anxiety when facing an alien species like this game.
So well thought of and the graphics were superb for a game released at it’s time.

@20:04 to 20:22 Does anyone know where do you get the speed boost jab or whatever it's called?
🤯 Thanks for the entertainment.
Holy jesus, you're my idol in SM question :O
hah, i'll take that as a compliment. thanks!
How do you skip the intro
Eleven minutes in and he has the varia suit already ! Man Wow ! Such a beast !
Popppppppp
Anyone know how/why 29:05 is possible? I'm not able to recreate it. Playing on an emulator, if that matters.
23:45 is giving me trouble, should I just come back later when I get grapple beam?
Of course you can do grapple first. Most any people would be advised against a delayed grapple route, not only b/c of the Wrecked Ship Etank (and having less energy for wrecked ship), but getting to springball is also a problem.
How and why you do this at 20:10 turning on and off the super missile and why you turn off the spazer and ice as well?
I'm trying to replicate your run, but at 19:57 I get super speed some decims of second after you and, on the succesive room, I cannot enter the other door after the missile open it (I hit it while it's opening)...
Can you give some some advices?
what does 0:45 game time mean? is it the overall time spent actually playing the game between loading and unskippable events? and is it in minutes or seconds?
TheScoobMaster it’s obviously not seconds idiot
@@Lu22H no shit, just trying to clarify
Zoasty: Speedrunning and 100%ing Super Metroid
The animals and the plant boss in Brinstar: 👁👄👁
I've been playing this game since it came out. I was In high school, and I used graph paper and a piece of poster board to map out a route. I think I got it down to under three hours? Maybe? But I didn't know anything about any of the exploits to speed things up. Ha! I wonder if Nintendo Power would've done a story about things like that.
I was so pumped when I saw younger people speedrunning this thing and using all these crazy tricks. Watching this closely, it blows my mind how quick your fingers must be moving.
Just outstanding.
That full halfie was sick!
9:34 The Chozo Statue observed your erratic movements and named you accordingly 🤣🤣🤣
Can someone please explain how the hell did he manage to get Samus's gun to shoot the little purple health things??? Like in 20:28
I've never seen her gun doing that
that's just what wave beam looks like by itself
33:20 I can't get this super missile to hit that block (doesn't seem loaded by the game). Is there a secret to that?
your x position has to be within a few pixels for it to connect, but there are multiple spots where it works
@@zoasty Thanks for replying. What's the easiest way to get this right? I couldn't find it on the wiki because I don't know its name. I tried searching "super missile spore bomb trick", it didn't work.

Bump, is there something you're special with this? Thanks.
@@nuraman00 If I understand correctly, I think it's when you run and activate speed booster in a heated room without any suits on. It doesn't always happen but often does in that case.
how is the 2nd part of the jump @ 15:30 carried out ? I just can not reach the ledge to get the wave beam
walljump? spin jump at a wall, press away from the wall (no diagonals), then jump immediately after. jump has to be after pressing away from the wall tho, not at the same time or before.

you gotta be cracked outta your mind to beat this game so quickly with a 100% completion!
41:31 how he did that, where was not a space to accelerate?
Best metroid game imo
thats a speedrun, without cheattools
My first time playing Super Metroid the statue mini-boss scared the shit out of me. I didn't realise it could be killed so fast.
yeah man after watching the entire run, i have no doubt in my mind this year you will have 43 minutes.
Hey just wondering how you do the trick to kill kraid so fast?
And, im sure you've played super metroid REDESIGN..... would you ever try a speedrun for that? Lol such a hard game
I was about to say i never remembered this part with the enemy digging the sand despite it being described to me, but i also thought the spring ball wasn’t in the game lmao
Zoast this comment is for you... My best time is 2:04 two hours four minutes... I always wonder when I look at your videos will I ever be that good? I've only just got introduced to super metroid I'm only nine and play a lot! This is my altimeter favourite game and I want to be like you so anyway my question is do you think I'm gonna be as good as you?
FinBall, it's impossible to tell! Just remember that I've been playing this game heavily for almost 5 years now, and that I've been playing all sorts of video games in general for 30 years now. Results are a product of talent and hard work, and it's usually hard to gauge the first one until you do the second one!
Jandah the Panda oooooo
I've been playing super metroid since i was 5
Congrats. I've been playing this casually since it first came out and I never thought I'd be capable of getting sub 3:00. But last night was my first time accomplishing that at 2:19 and was also my first 100% run. Even if you don't hold a world record, it feels great getting a PB doesn't it?
Edit: I also saved the animals because it's not 100% if you don't.
