The thing I really don't understand is why didn't they put some of the technologies like the flipping touch screen to the D7200. At least give people a good reason to upgrade to something better, or don't release anything at all.
I've had the D5300, and this one has one relevant advantage that he hasn't mentioned at all: better, deeper grip. It's so much more confortable. Really.
Completely concur! And as time goes buy the gap in price between the two is closing. They were originally something like $900 and $700 but now they are virtually the same price. If that same prices gives me a more ergonomic grip, lighter weight, 20% more battery life, and a touch screen.... There isn't much discussion. When there was $200 price difference between them then I can see the debate. But for virtually the same price... No discussion necessary.
I'm a novice photographer just getting into the world of SLR cameras. That said, while I was shopping for my first SLR camera, I came across this video (among many). And I've gotta say, I can't stand Kai's pessimistic and snobby reviews. Yes, I get that cameras such as Nikon D5500 is an entry-level camera and thus it's missing some key features but as a consumer, I'd like to know what I can do with said cameras. If you watch Jared Polin's reviews on Nikon D5500 (he actually has a few videos for Nikon D5500), he shows you that you don't necessarily need super high-end cameras to capture beautiful photos. He talks about pros and cons of the camera but not in a way that Kai does it, where he mostly digresses and mumbles and complains throughout the entire video. I finally ended up buying the D5500 from Costco after watching countless videos of various camera reviews. Thank goodness I no longer have to watch Kai's pouty face.
Yeah same here. His review was just nothing but negative and def snobby. Counldnt stand it. Made the right choice and I ended buying the D5500 too hahah. Cheers to u
digital Rev is a online camera store in Hong Kong. these videos are to drive people to buy from the site, the reason why he sounds snobby is generally because it's a new camera model that has wifi built in as the main feature, and that's it really. dslrs aren't selling well and mirrorless isn't quite there yet or doesn't have the lenses anyway. so you have a problem for camera models updated with just new firmware or a touch screen. everything is pretty much using the exact same Sony sensor, so there's little to talk about or say. until a new sensor or something happens with them then not much will happen
truthfully. it is. I enjoy this camera so much. Def a good starter. You will love it. Nice light weight. easy controls . Amazing quality picture and video.
Yeah it reminds me of the early days with Kia when the videos had a good mix of humor and info. Lately it has been way to much toward the humor side. I'm glade to see they are going back the other way. Hopefully they can find the good balance they had in the early days again.
The flipable touch screen and WiFi make this camera very nice to use while connected to my telescope. Being able to see the display on a larger screen no matter the angle the telescope is pointing is great. Being able to snap the picture through the WiFi is an added bonus.
***** that is exactly why entry level DSLR should be the 70D and the d7200 because the current entry level DSLR are just not good enough if canon and Nikon want to stay relevant they need to offer a lot more in entry DSLR.
***** At the very least Nikon should but an AF motor in the D5xxx cameras and make them meter with the old AIS glass. One of the key advantages of the F mount is all the legacy lenses that are still sharp, and in many cases have less distortion but more importantly are more affordable compared to the modern G lenses.
One other thing you didn't mention; if you want to do 1080p 60fps you need to go on a crop mode 1.3x so videographers be aware you might need a shorter lens to do wide angle slow-mo videos with this camera.
I have this camera and despite what this review says (and let's face it, it is only 1 man's opinion), this is a very good camera. Admittedly, the 18-55 kit lens is not great, so a replacement should be the first thing on your shopping list. I'd love to get a higher end dSLR, but I do not have an unlimited budget, so this price bracket and spec is ideal for me, and to be honest, would be perfectly fine for the vast majority of keen amateur photographers. I am thoroughly pleased with my D5500 and have expanded it with 4 lenses covering all focal ranges and shooting situations, so if this fits in with your budget, go for it.
I got the 5500 too and i realy like it. Bud he never said that it is a bad camera. Everything he says are facts, not opinions. The only opinion he gave was his choice between the 5500 and the 5300.
I have one of these too, and you are right. I find a lot of reviews are done with a kit lens, which is daft. The point of a DSLR is that YOU CAN CHANGE the lens. The 18-55mm kit lens is known to be a bit of a dog. Why don't reviewers run a sub-review with a decent prime (or even zoom) bolted onto the front. If a seagull poops on your car windshield do you drive round looking through the mess forever, no you don't, you remove it and get a sharper view. Reviewers everywhere take note, remove that kit lens and do a proper camera test with decent glass on the sharp end of it.
I see your point, but the touch screen is very very good. Changing settings without fiddling with menus and buttons makes a huge difference. Is it worth it? well, I upgraded from a D5200 so in my case, definitely yes. If you ARE on a D5300 right now, maybe wait for the D5600 (or whatever they call it) next year (or Christmas this year maybe?).
MrPenfold71 its a great camera.. and now with the release of the new af-p lens.. woo.. videos are a brezze and autofocus locks in split second while retaining an absolutely amazing sharpness to the pictures that nikon are known for
Still happy with my D5100, I use it for both photo and video. Because I use old prime lenses for the video, I CAN change the aperture while in live view!
Just going to put this out there, but I've stumbled across this channel fairly recently, and love it, Kai is like the Jeremy Clarkson of the photography world, keep up the good work my man
+Jeo Games 1. D5500 has better SD card reading. you can put in a fast and quick SD card you get 10-11 shots in raw. 2. You can use the touchscreen as a FN button when using the optical finder. great to use as focus point changer. 3. The GPS is gone. = better battery and lighter weight. 4. The touchscreen for viewing the shots are great...2 finger zoom, flip flop and crop. this for pre shots and samples and for choosing settings. 5. It has a sensor so it automatically goes in out of previews and setting as your eye goes to optical. The Grip is redesigned, better feel better grib 6. the metal dial is great and now the shift feature between the two rail fiúnctions make sense and feels good in operation. 7. the sensor is redesigned and gives better pictures and have better ISO. 8. In my opinion if your not sports photographer this is even better than the 7100 and also just as good as the D7200. i prefer the d5500 over the d7200. Because i don't shoot in rain and if I do i use an umbrella. and you can buy a very good lens with the d5500 and you get better images way better images than the d7200 with the kit. cheers.
+Benjamin Elung-Jensen Hi, I really like your add on details, especially over the D7100, D7200 series. I have 2 more specific questions: 1) Can the touch screen focus selection release the shutter at the time the focus point had been chosen? 2) how does it do when tracking movable object when they approaching the camera, especially compare with the d7200 purpose: children Thanks
Here we are in 2021 and like a bunch of us,, I've gone mirrorless. I managed to sell my older DSLR stash but keep my Red D5500 and a few of the F lenses. I still use it sometimes and still enjoy the basic-ness of it. Of course in my case, (these days) the Z6 is the way to go but this D5500 is still fun to use.
Body size is substantially smaller/lighter with a deeper, skinnier grip tho. Plus you have the ability to use a touch screen dial to change settings, ie, have a touch aperture dial. Not to mention being able to magnify by pinching and expanding with the touch screen and then move around on an image in play back mode.
And the ISO isn't the same, it's been raised to 25600 from 12800. The way the camera processes color has changed, more neutral and subtle (not just in the new flat profile), with greater detail and dynamic range to boot!
Neverland Traders In your dreams. D5300 boasts even better IQ than more expensive D7100 that is well known for exibiting banding when pulling shadows. D5300 - same sensor as in A6000 which is the best aps-c sensor in the world... Both cameras produce amazing image quality when paired with sharp lenses. Less sturdy body but same or better image quality than more expensive aps-c cameras. Exactly what a beginner photographer needs (or an enthusiast on a budget).D5500 - useless iteration (though touch screen can be nice for pinching and zooming). Excellent camera in that range.
Hey Kai, Hey Lok. I'm kinda addicted to your show. What really interests me is; how and what do you use to make your videos. Looks stunning. Regards from Germany.
There's no use asking this question. Hundreds of people including me and you have asked them but they don't tell. I've even seen the description but they never tell.
I have the d5500. my first. for me, its easy. I have the 18-140 lens. it seems sharper than the 18-55. I also bought the nikkor 35mm 1.8 which is very sharp and the tokina wide 11-20pro lens for this camera. I think I get pretty good shots with these and this camera. I personally opted for the d5500 because of the touch and swivel screen.
Ash Bash Sneakers n Fitness Well this camera is what you would call an "enthusiast" level, so its for people that are a bit more serious about photography and taking vids, but it's an easy to use camera. I would highly reccomend it, and if you want something for more of a begginer level there is always the d3400
Dillon Zabarte There are some differences in high iso noise that he didn't bother to mention. I've seen somewhat cleaner images from 5500 in tests at iso 6400.
Hey Kai, what type of lens do you recommend for the D5500? I am new in this and I would like to have your opinion since I've seen that so many people trust you about this kind of matter.
+James Allen grey market mate Hong Kong ! Everything comes from Asia anyway, if you want warranty then buy in USA, buy you pay a 300-500 USD more for sure. For me in Europe its 500 - 700 USD more. Nikkon's factory is now in Thailand and China.
+ahmed rawat here's why it's sold cheap because the Nikon product was sold by a grey market seller, Nikon's fb told me. I still don't get it though with this grey market, retail stores, and Nikon store.
I can decide between canon t6s(760d) and nikon D5500 can you help me? I manly want to use my first dslr for action sports/landscape filming and photography
I've heard a lot about the noise of autofocus in the kit lens. please tell me which lens I should take to reduce the noise for autofocus cuz I'll be using this mainly for video
hi. i have a few questions which i hope you can help me out with. Is the focusing motor noise on nikon d5500 dependent on the lens (e.g. kit lens) or is it inside the camera itself? (i am talking about auto-focus here). i mean if i use a different lens, will there still be the annoying noise of focusing motor in video recording etc.? i saw some videos where it shows that d5500 sometimes moves too much during focusing and you will have to focus again because it doesnt focus accurately. i was planning to buy one and i am confused between nikon d5500 and canon eos 80d. from reviews i have understood that 80d have better video quality and very low focusing noise compared to nikon but for image quality they are both the same. furthurmore, i have better and cheaper more versatile lens options with nikon.Secondly, in live view mode you have limitations in d5500 like if you take a snap, the screen goes completely blank for a second which is not good as you might loose track of the object as well as its focus. will you recommend me this camera over canon or will you suggest me canon?P.S. i will be using this camera for wedding photography with running kids (equivalent to sports photography), street photography, nature and also landscaping. (basically everything) and i do want articulated screen so i dont think i have many alternative options available anyway.your help will be appreciated. thanks.
The noise depends on the lens. This camera does not have the servo motor to adjust the focus, so you have to buy lenses with built-in motors, and they are the ones producing the noise. Some lenses have added features to deal with the noise, though.
Marcos is right, Nikkor have some new version of the autofocus motor which is said to be a lot quieter, I read a review last week, sorry I can't recall which new lens it was, but the motor was mentioned. To be honest though, if you are using any dslr for video, an external mic is best if you intend to use autofocus while shooting.
doesnt really need a whole video really. Mainly its like a RAW image for the photo side but video. Its flat and you have full control over the coloring and edit. But instead of it being for photos its video. No biggie but if you like to edit video and want more visual control, thats the only reason to shoot it.
Ah, I see. So it's like the flat picture profile in video cameras. Hmm... It's now such a close call between Sony and Nikon for me... Thank you, ***** !
Hi, i'm a beginner with the dslr and i'm about to buy a D5500 body, so could you help me out with a lens to choose as a allrounder for landsapes and potraits?
Hi, How does this compare to the Sony A6000? Im a beginner looking to get my first DSLR camera. Currently split between D3300, D5500 and A6000 any suggestions?
It's all very well and good, but Kai ignored the most important feature of the touch screen: with a press of the info button, it allows you to change every major exposure parameter without having to dive into the menus. This is a very big deal on a camera with only one dial and limited buttons, programmable or otherwise.
Personally if my budget was such that I was buying one of theses cameras I would go for a used or refurbished D5200 and save even more money over getting even a D5300 for other things like a tripod, bag, memory cards, lenses, spare battery, ect.
Look at the lens 1st, if the lens you like is there in that make then choose that brand or just use adaptors. Right now nikon is on top of the line over all but it varies when you compare separate model cameras.
@@TheHikeChoseMe Ever heard of the D3k series? The D5ks were the "pro-sumer" models and far greater than the entry-level offerings. A low shutter count, well kept D5500 will still cost you more than "cheap".
I'm looking for some advice on which DSLR I should get. My budget for the body is around $1000. I am a mountaineer therefore the camera will mainly be used for landscapes. The camera being lightweight and portable is a big plus; along with wi-fi capabilities. I am starting up UA-cam Chanel on outdoor lifestyle and outdoor gear reviews. Therefore, the DSLR must have good video capabilities. Which camera do you recommend for me? The Nikon D5500 has caught my eye.
Can't change aperture during live view on the cheaper models? What about the 7200? Is that a cheaper model also? Can't do it there either :P On the Samsung NX1 though, you can do all of it :P
I have used SONY NEX cameras for few years (with touch screen) i don't feel that Touchscreen is a must on a camera, OR if it is an essential feature. So i purchased NIKON D5300 and instead of touch screen model i purchased Nikon 50mm 1.8G Lens which is awesome.
nikon for sure! I believe the d5500 is better (well duh) but it's more expensive. Maybe save money by getting the d3300 and get a nice lens? Both are pretty good
What lens would you recommend for a nikon d5300 shooter who needs it for stills (built-in autofocus motor) and would like to get good video with it (f/3.5 or lower)?
the only reason im watching this video is that i enjoy watching asians with british accents talk.
I swear to god thats what I was thinking
Is Nikon's first touchscreen DSLR fashionably late or just plain late?
Nikon run out of ideas. Nikon marketing people are great at marketing, but looks like they have nothing to do with photography. :)
The thing I really don't understand is why didn't they put some of the technologies like the flipping touch screen to the D7200.
At least give people a good reason to upgrade to something better, or don't release anything at all.
Daniel Tan so they can sell the 5xxx series...
A touch screen on a camera that can't adjust aperture in live-view is kind of pointless, isn't it?
bullsharkreef how is one related to the other?
I've had the D5300, and this one has one relevant advantage that he hasn't mentioned at all: better, deeper grip. It's so much more confortable. Really.

Only good Nikon Body for video is the D750, because that's the only one you can change the aperature while recording, as far as I know.
Estherwho P-vegas the D750, D810 and the D4s let's you change aperture during video
Estherwho P-vegas like while your recording or in video mode?
we need a comparison between this one and the 760D(T6S)
I LOL'd at 2:40 "eagle having diarrhea"
very nice features
I have the d5100, still an awesome camera (for my needs). So won't be upgrading anytime soon. Still, interesting to see what's new.
Hi DigitalRev! Out of interested, wondered how you can sell cameras etc so much cheaper than other retailers? Thanks!
Here's why,the warranty of my D7100 which I purchased from them, don't work in the states.
+James Allen grey market mate Hong Kong ! Everything comes from Asia anyway, if you want warranty then buy in USA, buy you pay a 300-500 USD more for sure. For me in Europe its 500 - 700 USD more. Nikkon's factory is now in Thailand and China.
+dstefanek1988 that's called being in a different region
+ahmed rawat here's why it's sold cheap because the Nikon product was sold by a grey market seller, Nikon's fb told me. I still don't get it though with this grey market, retail stores, and Nikon store.
to TrumpCarson2016 how could it be a rumor when Nikon USA told me they don't accept grey market/ the warranty is void.
Great tutorial. Can I ask if D5500 has an AC power charger for it? Which one would you recommend? My battery can't do long video recording. Thanks.
Where'd he get his bag from? Love it.
belgium bag?
What about a Video about 750 and 760 D ??
More entry level shit
I can decide between canon t6s(760d) and nikon D5500 can you help me? I manly want to use my first dslr for action sports/landscape filming and photography
So Nikon D3300 and Nikon D5500, which one is better to choose for a beginner
I've heard a lot about the noise of autofocus in the kit lens. please tell me which lens I should take to reduce the noise for autofocus cuz I'll be using this mainly for video
Image - Nikon
Video - Canon
Hey
How about doing a review of the new Sigma 150-600 sports lens?
Just a thought....
Is it a 35 or 50 mm lens of the nikon camera?
Can you test the Olloclip for us?
and i'm just sat here with my d3200 :)
M Asp for sure. I only actually got it recently but I thought the difference between d3200 and d3300 was pretty small for the price gap
Is there going be a 6D mark ii soon?
Rumor is second quarter 2016
Canon EOS 750D or Nikon D5500?
As a first DSLR it is good.
What’s the compatible gimbal stabilizer for D5500?
Hello, I love your videos!
I have a D5500
Do you know how to reduce the power of the built-in flash for fill in flash?
6:00 *"which one is right fro you"*
How does this compare to the d3400? I'm looking for my first dslr and I can't decide which is best
hi. i have a few questions which i hope you can help me out with.
To be honest though, if you are using any dslr for video, an external mic is best if you intend to use autofocus while shooting.
was this video filmed on the D5500?
No they usually them film with some type of canon
5D Mark III
What exactly is the flat new picture profile good for? Maybe you could do a video about it? Thanks for this one!
doesnt really need a whole video really.
Exactly! And anytime. Glad I could help
I'd go for Sony, I have the A58, It has amazing quality, and the features it has that canon or nikon doesn't have.
A58? You gave me food for though there, NZpnw
You actually CAN change aperture during livievew O_o
Add some gold to the red and you got yourself a Iron Man Cam....
This is a very big deal on a camera with only one dial and limited buttons, programmable or otherwise.
this guy never fails to make me laugh
Does a "flat picture profile" eliminate the common problem like wrong focus area during video recording?
normally colors. So you can touch up on your own filters or settings.
Personally if my budget was such that I was buying one of theses cameras I would go for a used or refurbished D5200 and save even more money over getting even a D5300 for other things like a tripod, bag, memory cards, lenses, spare battery, ect.
Can we use mobile phone audio recorder software for dslr shooting.
Can you do a Sony A68, please?
Would this be good for shooting youtube videos?
honestly, didn't expect that voice
"Oh, thats a cowboy running across." Not even scripted in.. Lol..
Should I upgrade my D5100 to this or is there a better option out there? I use it mostly for taking video
Which is better Canon or Nikon?
Darude - Sandstorm
Mr Awesome Apple's iPhone camera
your mother
ur mum. no really, anything but canikon.
Look at the lens 1st, if the lens you like is there in that make then choose that brand or just use adaptors. Right now nikon is on top of the line over all but it varies when you compare separate model cameras.
Was told the 4 is an unlucky number in Japan, that why the jump over 5400.
+Arne Munther The number four in Japan is "shi", which is their same word for "death".
+Arne Munther NO DOUBT!
My GF is asian and anytime there is a certain number involved in anything, its bad luck.
So annoying lol
I like your channel, I also like your reviews but you can change aperture in live view on this camera.
These products are not exactly cheap, a bit of a more serious review needed?
the d5500 is one of the cheapest dslr's you'll be able to get right now.
The Nikon D5500 has caught my eye.
betwen the 5300 and 3400, wich one should i chose? is the HDR a big deal, a reason to chose the d5500 ?
Can't change aperture during live view on the cheaper models? What about the 7200? Is that a cheaper model also? Can't do it there either :P
On the Samsung NX1 though, you can do all of it :P
I have used SONY NEX cameras for few years (with touch screen) i don't feel that Touchscreen is a must on a camera, OR if it is an essential feature. So i purchased NIKON D5300 and instead of touch screen model i purchased Nikon 50mm 1.8G Lens which is awesome.
From a beginner's perspective, should I get a D5500 or a P900?
Sounds like this is an Instagram camera. Looked at from that viewpoint, the changes make sense.
Can I get live histogram on VF or live view mode with 5500?
This Nikon D5500 Or Sony A6000 ?
It's been a year since your comment but Sony a6000, hands down.
This (D5500) or D3300 for filming videos? Or maybe some canon? What would be good for filming videos?
nikon for sure! I believe the d5500 is better (well duh) but it's more expensive. Maybe save money by getting the d3300 and get a nice lens? Both are pretty good
which is good for a beginner..5300d or 5500d..i don't need gps
Is the D5500 really that bad?
You tell me to get get the 5300 which is a lesser camera by your own admission.
What lens would you recommend for a nikon d5300 shooter who needs it for stills (built-in autofocus motor) and would like to get good video with it (f/3.5 or lower)?
50mm 1.8 is good. But if you are into portraits then I would say 85mm 1.8 and if you are not into primes then 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 is better.
Dakoolguy111 sigma 17-70 2.8-4 C lens, or sigma 18-35mm 1.8
what the lens was used with D5500 in that video?
18-144 mm
+Zunain Faisal really? How did you figure it out? )))
+Sasha Lutskyi I got the EXACT lens with my kit.
+Sasha Lutskyi just my DSLR was black not red 😜
+Zunain Faisal I see, thanks
Not sure if its just a youtube issue, but every photo sample looked quite blurry
