bought my first camera 5 days ago and had no idea what i was doing up until now, thanks a lot on the guide it really helped me out
Just received this camera! I'm a total beginner, but you were FANTASTIC!! Thank you so much!! Can't wait to watch more! Thanks for taking the time to help new users!!
Your reports and advice are tops! I just bought my wife a D5500 and attached her Sigma 18-250mm lens on it. She loves it! It's very light and easy to set up using the touch screen. When she shoots wildlife she combines a Nikon 55-300mm lens with a Kenko 1.4X TC and has fun! That combo weighs a bit more but she gets some fantastic pictures. She now tells me, "Fro Knows!"
A superb guide Jared. Thank you so much. Setting the camera up properly, knowing what I'm now doing with the menus was a joy to go through with your help. Thanks again!
Amazing overview of the D5500. As much as I appreciate the effort other reviewers have put into their reviews, the audios are so bad, many with strong accents and muffled or mumbling voices, it is a breath of fresh air to watch a professionally made video with clear concise audio. I've actually got a refresher course on some of my other Nikon cameras features that I've long forgotten about. Like "Oh yeah, I got that on my D200!" In my old age, I am opting for a lighter weight camera and the D5500 may be the one for me. Thanks again for an outstanding video review.
Subscribed, this style of video is perfect. Very informative from a beginner point of view. Also it was too convenient I decided upon this Camera upon multiple reviews, including your 5 min shoot review with it. I look forward to watching your channel, you're a great personality.

Jared, after 27 years teaching HS in NYC, I am retiring this year. My plan is to pursue photography as a hobby. I just bought the D5500 and have to admit that i am photography illiterate. After watching your video, i feel i got a lot out of it. Excellente!!! keep up the good work!!
I just got my D5500 and had no idea about anything, your video has been very clear and useful thanks a lot from Argentina (y)
I don't know how to start to THANK YOU for this informative video. I just bought the D5500 @ the Navy base near our home in Jacksonville FL, and I followed your settings steps one by one and my camera is the s@#$!!!!! I will follow your videos from this point on. Thank you for taking the time to teach people like me how to make the best of our cameras! Gracias Amigo! and by the way, Nice Hair! lol
Thank you so much for this - I have just found it and was just about to scrap this camera as I feel that it is not as sharp as it could be. I have changed a few settings now and will go out again with my prime lense - let's hope I get a few good pictures now. I shoot raw and manual by the way...
For setup information just start from "16:51"
Thanks for this dude I got this camera the Nikon d5500 with 18-55mm also with a Nikkor 55-200mm lens ,This is one of the best videos for someone who just bought the d5500 Nikon, Peace up, thanks Jared!
I cannot thank you enough for this video. The manual is ok but you bring everything to life!
I'm a first timer using Nikon d550. your video is a big help to a beginner like me. thanks
Just opened this camera for Christmas. I had been waiting for the day to watch this video so you can explain what the hell I do with it in order to get started, Thanks!
Someone else may have pointed this out already - since you have 334 comments before mine! But - I have a "MY MENUS" - Right below the Retouch Menu is another menu - when I click on it, the title says, My Menu, scroll down to "choose tab" and the choices are My Menu and Recent Settings. Thanks for a very informative video on my D5500!
Fro is the best...the style of presentation is engaging and easy to follow.
I got my Nikon D5500 today!! I am watching this video again because Fro Knows Photo!
Tanks ! I just have my first camera is Nikon D5500 and You help understand the camera
Greate tutorial! I bought this camera online but I haven´t received it yet. I was wondering what to do first after unpacking it. And you gave the answer and more. This is my first DSLR camera. Thanks for such an illustrative initiative.
This guy is and his fro.... are Photography LEGEND!!!!!!!!! Great Content EVERYTIME!
As a beginner, I must say your video is interactive and informative. Thankyou for your effort. I've become your new subscriber.👍👍👍😄😄
It sure would help -- for example when you're talking about the touch screen at about the 8:30 mark -- if your hand weren't in the way, so we could see what you're touching.
Thank you very much, very informative video since I'm new to DSLR. Purchased my Nikon D5500 a week ago & just took it out of the box today!
i learn a lot from ur videos...its very helpful...
i must say one thing that ur style of saying "froknowsphoto" is just awesome...
great image quality and good for street photography
Thanks. got d5500 yesterday. read main parts of manual and watched this. bit more confident before i will turn on the camera .. very soon! my first dslr!
Hi jared, Your explanation is awesome and I learn a lot, I purchased the D5500 and now your video Make me learn how to use and get the best result.
You didn't mention you can hold Fn button and use the command dial to Change the ISO while in manual, just like the +/- button does for F stop to save using the menus. Good all round video.bill stick with my d5200 for a bit longer.
Simon Bartlett great point. I noticed that in live view I can’t change the aperture with the dial, is that an issue from my camera or i put a wrong setting at some point?
@@dabbling1163 I think this is normal and it sucks.
thanks to this video, i just bought the d5500, ready to play with it and your videos helped in a big way, Thanks Jared.
Your real world review and the great battery life convinced me to buy this camera. Have owned it since May. I do street photography with the Nikon D5500.
Know want to eventually purchase the Nikon D750 and the Nikon D500 as well as the Panasonic GH4 and the Fuji XT2.
Along with both the Canon 80D
Most excellent video. The perfect introduction to the D5500 camera. Thanks
Pretty much a fine video/intro. Despite typical prejudices towards manual by most reviewers (and I get that), I recommend you tell beginners that they can get way more out of "P" than "Auto" because of course you can get auto results for shutter and aperture but tweak the ISO, focus mode, Exposure Compensation, White Balance, etc. It might also be more attractive, initially, to show the camera with a small kit lens or 35mm prime to demonstrate how it can be utilized with a smaller footprint. Good on you for clearly showing the touch-screen capabilities. Again though, overall, excellent and clear instruction and video about the camera. Play that piano for us one day... :)
I just got my first camera today, your video helped me learn a lot
Thank you Jared for your brief explanation. You are amazingly good. I received this Nikon D5500 as my present yesterday, with your helps I understand more regarding most functions, will get out there and practice all difference shots.
Hi Jared. That's me subscribed. I bought this camera with the 18-140mm lens in June. This video has helped me loads. I'm looking forward to learning more. Very well put together, informative and its brilliant you covered all the silly things as its good to have things clarified.
Really a good overview. Just enough explanation to recognize the menu items when studying later on but not so much that it overwhelms a person. Do you think it may be better to start with the basic settings in the info button and the elaborate from there? That is a good place to begin when playing with the camera and I didn't know about it until I had spent hours trying to find those items in the full menu. Thanks.
Thanks for this informative video! I'm considering this camera as my first ever DSLR!
did you buy it?
I'm still a ways off from affording one. :(
***** Well good luck man!
Mark Lumsley will
i am considering it too as my first DSLR
I like people who take time to put an awesome video out
I just bought this camera and your tutorial is very good and is helping me get up to speed quickly. I've subscribed. I ever get my interview channel up and running, maybe you'll be willing to speak on empowering SMEs (with zero media/photo background) to use media for their profession.
I just bought one. Very nicely explained the features and the exposure triangle. Love it.
just got my d5500 today, thank you so much, really helped my setup
Mr. Jared . you seem like a very straight forward guy . I like that . Great video.
I have the D5000 I found out by watching this - this was a great introductory video to getting out of auto. I took some field notes to take with me :)
Thank you for talking to us beginners like we're actual human beings unlike some other videos i've come across :) Subscribed! ....also buying camera.
Thanks for the info Jared. I have just recently bought the D5500 and I set up the camera excatly the you said. I'm looking forward to getting many wonderful pictures thanks to your information. The camera store said this was a better camera than the Canon D7500 I was also looking at. Thanks again.
Great video, just ordered my d5500 definitely gonna come back to this video when it arrives
Nice video - my son just bought one, his first "SLR". I'm sending him the link to watch! Thanks Jared!
Though I am looking it after five years, it I feel it very helpful.👍 thanks
Your haircut made me lose faith in humanity. Then after watching the video, I gained it all back plus a lot more. Keep up the great work, Jared.
Top notch job. The best video I ever seen for the camera that I have.
Although I'm personally using another type of Nikon DSLR camera this is very helpful video.
Thank you man, you've been helpful because i've changed the D7200 for the D5500...half price and the image quality it isn't half good, in my opinion the low light performance it's better in this one than in the d7200.
Good stuff man. Been away from cameras for nearly 10 years. Solid refresher. Now that I have those 30 lives I'm good to go.
Best review and detailed video ever seen.. Keep it up... I'm definately going for this camera...
Watched a couple of your videos, as a newbie into photography I find them very informative, subscribed on the second video! Thank you, keep up the good work!
I am so happy to have come across this video! I bought the D5500 a few years ago after having a D60 and I've been frustrated ever since. I read the manual several times but never really figured a few things out until now so thank you VERY much. :) I was about ready to sell this camera now I think I can work with it awhile longer. My main frustration was the focus and I learned from you about the release mode. Wahoo!! One more thing I'm frustrated about is the camera telling me I can't take a photo in manual in low light situations without a flash when I know my settings are correct. Just let me take the photo, if it's too dark I'll adjust my settings! Any thoughts?
Just picked one of these up a few weeks ago, and love it. I got the 18-140mm Kit and purchased the 35mm 1.8G prime lens. Takes beautiful pictures. Great video, learned a lot. Really appreciate the time you took to make this. Thanks lot.
If you have the qDslrDashboard app for your smartphone, I suggest you to use RAW+small basic jpeg. That way your jpeg image will be uploaded virtually instantly to your smarphone/tablet, and it's also much more than sufficient for sharing in whatsapp and other social media. When you are back using your laptop/desktop system, you can process those raw files as you wish, and still have that serviceable 6MP alongside to give some hint how the camera did "bake" the image, yet the quality difference encourages you to use RAW for any "serious" purposes. Small basic jpeg takes virtually no space (1.5MB or so), so there is no problem having it alongside your huge raw file. (Except it slower on burst mode than RAW only and hugely slower on burst mode than JPEG only)
Awesome Jared... thankyou for a nice walkthrough to the D5500 -just ordered it ourself :) can't wait to get it :)
Great video. I doubled my knowledge of this camera. The blowups of the menu screen are very useful.
Jared Polin If you goto the very bottom of the "Recent Settings" Tab .. theres an option called 'Choose Tab' where you can set it to the "My Menu" function you were talking about.
Thanks a lot for the video! I just bought this camera and new to dslr, this video really helps.
Great job, Jared. I'm sure this will help a lot of people. Probably not even just with the D5500 since the Nikon menus are so similar.
My own D5500 users guide would just be a link to Amazon so they can order a D7000 or D7100 and a second link to a D7000/D7100 users guide^^
The D5500 is a nice camera, but I think the D7000 and D7100 are the better beginner cameras because they are just as easy to use but offer more features. A touchscreen is nice but having the buttons for direct access is even better.
But hey! People buy what they like. That is the good thing of having so many products available, you always have a choice.
No wifi, touch screen is super good for looking at your pictures to see if person's eyes are in focus, pretty much the same fps, plus the price - you can spend that money on lenses, 7200 goes for freaking 1000€ for wifi and better internals.
Matt' Who cares about WIFI and touch screens? The D5000 line has a focus on consumer gimmicks, the D7000 line has a focus on being a capable camera. Besides, now that the D7200 is out the price for a used D7100 in great condition has dropped below the price of a new D5500.
Also, the D7000 line of cameras has the internal AF motor. The D3000 and D5000 lines don't have that. Being able to use older screwdrive AF lenses is an amazing way to save money without sacrificing image quality! For example, my 80-200mm f/2.8 cost me 240€ instead of roughly 1700€ for a used 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII. So yes, a new D5500 costs less than a new D7200. But with a D5500 you can't save roughly 1460€ on a single lens ;D And while it *is* a roughly 25 years old lens, the image quality is still outstanding: flic.kr/p/vn7ooG
as i said touch screen is amazing for checking your focus points on image, wifi is essential for people who really use their tablets or phones to upload photos to their websites and cant have an easy access to a computer. Im considering 7200 myself, because i really got caught up by your comment and checked both cameras while i was in the airport(at the airport shop) and i gotta say, i loved 7200 A LOT more. I feel like i can grip camera a lot better because its bigger and i love that its not as lightweight as 5500 which feels super cheap, although its not. Plus the screen itself while being very good, i gotta say the whole flip thing feels cheap and unreliable.
Very informative! Thank you
Thank you for the amazing information. I am going to have to watch this several times to get it all. I'll be watching all your videos.
Good one.A complete user Guide for Nikon D5500. Thanks!

Finally, a video that made things make sense
This was my first camera, also me watching my first dslr tutorial video. I follow Jared up until now.
Great overview, thanks.
Very good I liked and enjoyed and learnt a lot from this video thanks a lot
New subscriber and like the video thank you . This video help me a lot on understanding how to take better videos on my Nikon, how to work the functions, to expand my videos from 20 minutes (so frustrating) to 29 min 59 seconds without comprising too much of the quality. I wanted to ask you what do you think of me putting video mode at 1080 30 to give me 30 min? Only lens I have is 35mm AF-S 1:1.8G
Thanks so much i just got mine today. That was so well made and informative.
Great review Jared, very helpful, thank you very much!
Great videos Jared!
Thank you so much!!! wow!! you rock just like ur hair 🙄 this is my first camera and dang.. u blew me away with this video!! I made a great choice! Nikon for the win!
Upgraded to the d5500 from a canon sx170si. 👍
Great video as always Jared. Thanks!
Jared Polin, thank you so much your video is very informative. Can you put out a video that will show how to understand long exposure ( I mean how to understand the shutter speed to know if I say; I want this shutter speed to be 20 seconds to shoot a waterfall, so it looks shimmer! I have trouble understand how the seconds work to the dial. thank you Nance.
Did you end up learning how to do this?
Thank you Jared for taking the time and effort on doing this, that was a lot of helpful and useful information.
A D5500 é a melhor câmara dos últimos anos, feita por qualquer marca !!!
Excellent !! very well explained. This is extremely helpful and one of the best I've seen for detail. Thank you for your time.
Hi thanks for the video, how do I tether it to an external monitor?? Do you have a preference on what cable should I buy! Thanks
