    Thank you for the field test and review of the Nikon D5500. I ordered one this morning and will have it in my hands on Wednesday, which is my birthday. I watched your review and a couple others which helped me in making my decision. I appreciate all you do in teaching us about the products out there. Keep up the great work!!!

    I don't know exactly what you mean by removing focus from shutter release (at 5:38), but Nikon D5000 series cameras traditionally have a Custom Menu Settings (F2) by which the AE-L/ AF-L button can be programmed to be a AF-ON button which frees the shutter button of its focusing duties!!
    Great video as always!! I'm revisiting this one as I'm hoping to add a D5500 as a light-weight second body to my trusty old Nikon D7000!! Hope it will be a good choice for me!!!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому +3

      Thanks, yes, I was looking for something that didn't need to be found. On most cameras both steps are necessary (i.e. first enable a button to back focus and second remove focus from the shutter press). I've since learned that Nikon accomplishes that with a single step.

      Thanks for taking the time to reply! If possible could you help me decide between the D3400 and D5500? The packages I am looking at include both the kit lens (18-55mm) and an additional 70-300mm lens along with some other goodies, that being said the the price difference between the two are CAD$80, which one would you recommend? :)

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      Probably the D5500 - but I'd let both of those lenses go and bargain for a better one.

    Maarten, you’re such a professional that I just want to buy everything you review (LOL), but i'll keep the one I got based on your review, the Sony A7-MK2, I got it about a year ago and I couldn’t be happier. Thank you for sharing.
    Rick.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      Thanks for the kind words. You should be happy with the A7 - I don't think there's anything here (other than Nikon's lenses) which would be an improvement.

  • @patrickfitzgerald2861
    @patrickfitzgerald2861 8 років тому +2

    Really well done Maarten. I agree with your comment below that the Sony a6000 is a great value, but I still think this camera is, feature for feature, a better one. And only Nikon and Canon can offer a huge array of lens choices (theirs and others) if you decide later to expand beyond the one provided in a kit. I bought my D5500 body only, and added the Sigma 17-55 f/2.8, and I couldn't be happier. I too find myself frequently saying, "Wow, that's a really nice picture!"

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      Thanks for the kind words. For the price point, there's no beating the A6000, but in spite of my mirrorless bias, I agree - the D5500 is an excellent camera that reliably delivers satisfying results.

    • @patrickfitzgerald2861
      @patrickfitzgerald2861 8 років тому +1

      Well, we'll just agree to disagree on that! And while neither of these cameras has 4K video, I doubt that more than 1 or 2 percent of all camera buyers really need it, especially if they understood before hand that it requires an expensive PC to properly edit and render those gigantic files. To me it's more of a sales gimmick.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      Wow, I thought we were agreeing to agree! But for 4K, I will both agree and disagree - it can be a very valuable film-making tool. Not only because it enables me to zoom and recompose in post, but because in general, I find the quality of down-rezzed 4K to be superior to HD.
      And your next TV will be 4K. The real reason not to get it now is that ITU/REC 2020 (the 4K colour and dynamic range standard) isn't yet fully implemented either on cameras or TV sets. However, you're absolutely correct - fast PC and mega-gigs of external drive space or you'll end in absolute frustration.

    • @patrickfitzgerald2861
      @patrickfitzgerald2861 8 років тому +2

      Certainly you're one of the 1 to 2 percent I mentioned above, I just don't believe the other 98 or 99 percent of people will ever take advantage of it, since they don't do video post-production, and mainly view their results on low-res PCs. My point being, why pay for something you won't use? Also, though I'm no engineer, it seems to me we're starting to bump up against the laws of physics (excessive heat, battery life issues, quality control, etc.) with all of these processor intensive features in such small packages.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      Agreed on all counts - battery life and overheating are major mirrorless concerns.

      Hmmm ... let's see. About the same on many aspects, so first - does one have a feature you'd really like that the other doesn't? Does one fit your wallet better? Does one fit your hand better? Does one brand appeal to you more? Then, finally, make sure to check with your heart. You should love the camera, so that you always want to take it with you. Hope this helps.

    great review as I'm stuck between the canon 700d twin lense kit with 75 -300mm lense and the Nikon D5500 18-140mm lense and be for landscape photography , I used a 700D for a wedding but only for a day but not sure what to go for I'm 100% into photography and not videography

      Thanks for the kind words. Make the choice with your hand (which one feels nicer) your wallet and your heart (which (brand) would you be proud to own, which would you never leave at home). They're both terrific cameras.

    • @MrChrisr34
      @MrChrisr34 8 років тому +1

      Maarten Heilbron to be completely honest I would be happy with either I love photography and picture mad as I kept getting told haha so I'm not bothered bout brand wise be happy to own either one just with most camera's now being 20+ mp I feel I'm kind of getting an outdated camera even tho I know it's not about the pixels , I liked the nikon side as was lighter and bit more different like iphone feel everyone has a canon haha but just want something that's going to be very sharp and fun to use and learn with but not cost a bomb to expand with lenses etc

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому +2

      You would/should be happy with either. If it were me, I'd take the D5500. I'd take the DX16-80 lens instead of the 18-140.You will appreciate the F2.8, the focus distance window (and the fact it's an E lens) way more than you realize. You will own the lens much longer than the camera, get a good one.

    • @MrChrisr34
      @MrChrisr34 8 років тому +1

      Maarten Heilbron yeah I noticed you say about the lense as watched it again as bes video and information I found for any of the camera's I looked at so definitely keep that up helps alot , and I'm going more the Nikon side as like the software and style side looks more pleasing and learner friendly , would the lense be good enough for landscape as goto the lake district alot even thinking of moving there as love it so much haha so want to capture it's gorgeous detail to bring home for the wall haha

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      For landscapes, I would always recommend the lens with the largest filter diameter (this is 72mm). It's also a nice universal size for filters.

      D5500 is a extremely good beginner level camera. D7000 series is more pro. I'm realizing this when I've grown as a photographer and I can't use nikon cls or commander mode for speedlights with my D5500.

  • @Smoke_Eater48

    Maarten,
    To clarify, you said "there's no setting to remove focus from the shutter release." This is incorrect. In the menu there is a setting to assign the AE-L/AF-L button. Change this setting to 'AF On' and it will remove the focus from the shutter release and assign it to the AE-L/AF-L button at the back of the camera. This works fantastic when focusing on an object and recomposing without changing your distance to what you are shooting.
    Also, while shooting in Manual you can change the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO with the adjustment wheel on top of the camera. To adjust the ISO, press the 'Fn' button on the front left of the body near the flash button and turn the wheel while the button is depressed. To adjust the aperture, press and hold the exposure compensation button near the adjustment wheel and turn the wheel to adjust. The shutter speed requires no additional button to be held, simply rotate the adjustment wheel.
    This is how I have mine setup and it works like a dream. It allows for quick adjustments to shutter speed, aperture, and ISO as well as allowing me to focus on an object, recompose, and take multiple shots in succession without refocusing for every shot.
    Overall, I thought this was an excellent, unbiased review and a great video for buyers on the fence.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому +1

      First, thanks very much for your very kind words; secondly thanks for setting the record straight - I didn't realize that one setting would do both (on most cameras one must find two settings) I appreciate your contribution, I'll try to be more diligent next time in making sure I try those kinds of solutions. And yes, it's a great feature to have exactly for the situation you describe - most photographers call this back focus.
      I also very much appreciate the exposure settings tip - I can see how that would be very useful, particularly after your hand learns the position of those buttons. I will say that while I"m shooting I typically only adjust one - but it's good to be able to access them all.
      Again, I appreciate your time in commenting.

    Thank you so much for the review.
    Could you compare the 1080p output of the D5500 with the 1080p output of the Sony a6300? If I recall correctly, you tend to shoot the sony a6300 in 4K and then downsample to 1080p though, which probably means the D5500 would be far inferior in terms of video quality. Thanks in advance.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      Although I do still have the A6300 (I bought one), I returned the D5500 after the review, so can't do a side-by-side. I thought the A6300's HD was slightly less than average, so likely would find the D5500 the same or better. 4K, of course, is another matter.

    There is, and always has been, a way to reassign the AE-L/AF-L button to AF-ON. I own a d5500 and I back button focus.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      That is an appreciated tip, thank you. However in addition to adding the ability to focus to a button other than the shutter, you need to remove focus action from the shutter button. How do you do that?

    • @E_Ten
      @E_Ten 8 років тому +1

      Maarten Heilbron The option is not that granular in the D5500. Once the AE-L/AF-L button is assigned to AF-ON the shutter button is automatically unassigned from that function. A half press only illuminates your focus point and toggles the display of available buffer capacity for continuous shooting.
      It seems a bit counter productive to me to have your shutter button assigned to focus while back button focus is enabled. So it looks like nikon combined those two setting changes into one in Nikon's lower end DSLRs. I think the D3200 is the same way, if I can recall correctly.

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      I certainly appreciate the kind words, thank you very much. There will always be a new model with some improvement, that for most of us doesn't make so much difference. I assume you don't have an investment in lenses. They're both great choices, so let your wallet, your hand (how does it feel when you hold it) and your heart (which one would you be proud to own) help make your choice. I like the T6, but would likely choose the D5500.

      If you look closely at Nikon's D5500/D5300 advertising and brochures, you'll notice they mention that the camera does NOT have a low-pass filter. This is a very, very good thing, giving you much sharper and more detailed photos. All Canon DSLRs have it, presumably because their sensors would perform poorly without it. In this price range, go with Nikon if you go DSLR. Mirror-less is a whole other thing. Oh yeah, and you can wait forever for new models, since they're always being announced. Remember, 90% of photography is about something other than equipment.

      +Maarten Heilbron on the d5200 at least the option is there to move auto focus to the AE-L button on the back. It's found in custom settings menu, f2. AF-ON to set the camera for back button focus. I would assume the newer d5500 has this option there as well.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

    I wanna know Maarten, what are your thoughts on both Photos and videos ?? which is more reliable A6000 Or D5500? I want something that is good in both fields

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      For me the difference goes far beyond reliability, which I would judge to be about equal. Do you want a full-sized DSLR or a smaller mirrorless camera? Do you want a Sony or a Nikon? I would find any mirrorless camera to be more capable/useful for video than a DSLR. For photos, they are about the same - but that depends more on lenses, and how you feel about Sony and Nikon default picture profiles (unless you're shooting RAW).

    • @DCNationVideos1
      @DCNationVideos1 8 років тому

      Shooting raw, I've not an expert so i dont need something too bulky or has to many settings you get me? I was looking at the Canon T6I vs the A6000. I heard the Sony A6000 does better than DSLR Cameras in videos and focusing is a lot better.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      Both of these are full featured enough to have a lot of settings when you need. Yes, mirrorless cameras, like the A6000 are better for video. I would not put too much emphasis on focus speed.

    • @DCNationVideos1
      @DCNationVideos1 8 років тому

      hmm all Im thinking of right now is, I know canons have more lens for you to use than a sony does, but so for all the reviews for the A6000 seem to be better than all the DSLRS? because you mentioned they take pictures about the same and Videos on mirror less are better?

    • @MaartenHeilbron

    Hi, very nice review, I was wondering, will I be able to take pictures like yours but with a "regular" lens like AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II Lens - Black? I'm just a little worried that people make reviews of cameras with very expensive lens, sometimes, even more expensive than the camera, so, I just don't know if that great pictures are thanks to the camera or the lens? I want to buy the camera with that lens because I don't have cash for more expensive lens, so, I wanna hear your opinion. Thank you.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому +2

      I appreciate the kind words. Of course ... I know that many people dismiss kit lenses, and although they might not satisfy demanding photographers, they are excellent value with very good quality. The major downside of any lens with a ramped aperture is that if you zoom in you'll need more light or a higher ISO and will sacrifice some background blur.
      But "pictures like mine"? The majority do not exercise the boundaries of the lens - and when they do, the challenge may enhance your creativity.
      However, better glass is better glass, and investing in better lenses is a far better use of a limited budget than a more expensive camera. Hope this helps.

    Great video. Going to MOAB, Ut soon. Can you recommend a good landscape lens? I have a nifty fifty and AFS 18mm-140 Nikkor.

      Thanks. I'd probably pick the 10-24 for wide angle landscapes, if you feel the 18 end of your 18-140 isn't suitable.

    Nice review, For still photography, which camera you prefer between D5500 or Canon 760D(T6s) ?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      Difficult decision - if you don't already have lenses for one or the other, I'd be guided by price, the way they feel to your hand and your brand preference.

      ***** Thanks for your reply, Both have same price here in Poland. You used both of them , What you think which is better for Photo's as i'm not into video photography. I was thinking of Nikon + 18-105mm + 50mm f1.8 but than i saw canon , it has 2 dial and top screen.. I'm confused now. please help me to decide. I need camera for hobby, family & travel only. Thanks

      If you plan to shoot manual, the two dials, to change both shutter and aperture easily, is better. Still, either is a good choice, personally, I'd likely take the Nikon.

      Congratulations. Have you checked the manual?, it's usually included in the box. It's also available as a pdf from Nikon online. I see good instructions on page 5, the delay options are set in c3. Hope this helps.

    Would you recommend the nikon d5500 over the nikon d7000? They are both the exact same price and Im only going to be doing photography, and using a 50mm 1.8 on either camera.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому +1

      The D5500 is newer and has a few more features, so it would be the one I'd pick. On the other hand, I didn't review the D7000, so can't really say. If you owned the D7000 I would probably not recommend an upgrade, but starting with a clean slate, the D5500 would be the better camera.

      Maarten Heilbron ok sir. as i see from the video is the lens aperture starts from f3.8 in nikon d5500 sir?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      It ramps from F2.8 to F4 as you zoom in. At that focal length the largest aperture was F3.8

    Is Nikon 5500 a great camera plz reply

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      Inasmuch as Nikon makes several models that are more expensive and have more features, I would say it is not a great camera. However, it is a very good camera.

    Hi! I have wanted to have a professional camera for some a while, specially a Nikon camera, and now decided it's time to get one. Many reviews show this as the best of the cameras with similar features and price. Do you think this is a hit for a first camera?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      Yes, it's a good choice at any point in your photo career - unless you are a professional. For a DSLR, it's small and light, but what's "best" is very subjective and depends upon the kind of photographs you plan to take.

    Can u suggest a zoom lense for this camera for birding?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 років тому

      Yes. The longest reach with the largest aperture and highest quality you can afford. Here's the 400mm F4 - bhpho.to/2ZxNNJS. If that's too pricey, and you don't mind working with F5.6 there's the more affordable 500mm bhpho.to/2ZAHmFU (these are affiliate links, you get the same low price, I get a small commission if you purchase)
