  • Borneo is one of the best TF2 maps, yet nobody talks about it so much. I give my take on why it should be appreciated more.

Honestly, Borneo is one of those maps that doesn’t come up in discussion, because it doesn’t have much divisive opinion around it, but still manages to be a great map. With Upward, you can easily say that it’s a bit of a pain to get to the second point as a BLU Heavy, and that the final point is a bit of a clusterfuck separated from the rest of the map, but with Borneo… It’s just so fun. There’s even some slightly wacky spots to camp on thanks to map geometry, thin support beams and alcoves that let you get the drop on people, and it’s still an excellent map.
Some maps aren’t talked about, but that doesn’t mean they’re outright bad. Borneo is one of TF2’s most friendly all-class maps, and one of the best overall.
I wouldn’t mind a video dissecting Altitude though. Also one of the best A/D maps in recent memory, especially compared to problems like Mossrock.

The reason most maps are talked about is that they have something divisive about them like. However, when you get a map as perfect as Borneo there is nothing to talk about other than it's good (it takes 8 min to tell you everything you need)

Hmmm idk about borneo...i like the way it looks and the grassy, foresty vibe. I also really like the first and last points (both as attack and defend). But there is something about the middle section that just doesn't do it for me. Something feels a little bit too clusterfucky for me at these sections.

The one thing that holds back Borneo from being my favorite is that it’s spawns are really bad. All of them are incredibly easy to camp and some have almost nonexistent counterplay.
Also Borneo gives you a cold feeling? It gives me that muggy humid gross feeling

    • @tbotalpha8133
      @tbotalpha8133 Рік тому +3

Yeah. I remember reading that a good spawn room in TF2 should:
      A. Have more than 1 exit,
      B. Have said exits laid out in such a way that a single player cannot see all the exit doors from the same position.
A lot of older maps like Dustbowl break these rules, which is partly why their spawn rooms are so easily camped. But a bunch of the Borneo spawnrooms do the same thing, with the same frustrating results.

This map did the last point 100 times better then Upward and Badwater. There's no overwhelmingly frustrating chokes but also no broken sniper sightlines, and the more I think about it the more I think it's objectively the best balanced payload map.
My favorite map personally is probably cp_Foundry, just because of the atmosphere and design. Plus it's one of the few CP maps that doesn't get flooded with comp wannabes.

Coming from Borneo, I like to think the map is part of the interior of Sabah as part of the logging companies in a young Malaysia. It feels so fun to imagine that somewhere in the mountainous interiors of Sabah lies an actual site that looks like the TF2 map.

My favourite thing about this map is that if you play Red Spy and the other team is still trying to push through the first point, you can airdrop yourself off the bridge that the cart passes underneath and 99% of the time you'll get a stab because everyone trying to push past that bridge always has their eyes glued in front of them for the Red Sniper.

T5 Beggar's Bazooka Jumper/Main here, I like this map, it forces you to learn and use jumps with beggar's that don't see much use also makes you understand every piece of geometry acting like a slope like hills from 1st, the 3rd spawn rollout makes you do a T4 shallow overload sync redirect near the gate to get out into a ramplode which is really AWEsome, same rollout with defence on last and you get to jump freely to 4th point, also many roofs where you can jump onto and get overload jump angles to get sentries easily, the map is really fun and forces you to get creative with how you move or make your next decision with how it's designed to make players go or flow to certain routes which you yourself can learn from and use it against em, thees alotta depth and reads in this map
Even if 3rd point is a bit overlooked and lasts not as long usually after 2nd.
Each class just gets a focused purpose to do and it's just clear what it is.

And from a beginner perspective i have to say that it's pretty good to learn how to play most (or maybe even all) classes.

You're right, Borneo is an underappreciated map, and you just made me appreciate it a little more. Its popular, but its no ones favorite map. But I do love/hate how last can become either a relatively fair fighting point or a thick nest of sentries. My favorite map is pl_thundermountain (the map with the high tower) and obviously it has some downsides but it is just super fun as an airborne class like air strike soldier.

My main issue with Borneo is that unless you have a team with a somewhat decent amount of organisation or you're able to keep a medic alive long enough to have an Uber (something which feels hard on this map for me personally due to how easily most classes can breach your front lines and go in for an easy pick due to how thinly your team is usually spread), sentries are a nightmare on 1st, 2nd, and especially 4th point.
But that's more so a player issue and is similar to what you said about the map not being 100% beginner friendly. The map is still easily within my top 5 tf2 maps.

  • @Real_temmie_undertalo

Didn't notice too much about the map just as you said, it didn't come to my head in many times, but still for some reason it stands as a good map even though no one remembers talking about it!
Truly, that map has upsides everywhere, and playing scout feels amazing due to 2 flank routes every 10 seconds you run, soldier for the open spaces that take place on 70% of the map, pyro for the bridge's ambushing opportunities and the rooms that hold the damage for him, demo for those inmensely advantageous cabins and the tunnel, which gives him lots of rooms for traps everywhere (demoknight being also helped with the wide space to charge around), heavy has a general placement, being comfortable everywhere, engineer has 3 *perfect* spots for sentry nests, sniper has great sightlines without having to be broken, and spy has lots of mini-hidden rooms where he can decloak without anyone noticing!
Borneo can be a rarely talked map, but a really loved one, and I love to know that

  • @thespectacularlymonochrome7891

Borneo is tied together with Gorgeous for my favourite maps, because back when I started playing every map was... Dusty, orange-y, as you'd expect from the maps based on _the lore_ specified region, then along came these two with green, life and some concrete to spice it up, Swiftwater too

My top 3 maps as a heavy main:
    1. Mossrock. Dynamic, forgiving, pretty, lots of space and flanks that aren't obnoxiously disconnected. Both BLU and RED are given many chances to turn the tide. Corners everywhere to jump rev from to the ground. Good positions for pocket medics to hunker down while not being completely invulnerable.
    2. Egypt. Very unique look, highly variable terrain, good sightlines, and many hiding spots for spies. Again, very fun to hold down areas like bridges and chokes with a minigun, and constantly being on your toes for various attack routes.
    3. Steel. The most complicated map in rotation. Every single class is viable, in most situations. The only map where BLU has the option to rush a single point and win right away. Requires strategy and gamesense, making it feel more like chess than FPS.

Borneo [Or Kalimantan as the locals call it here in Indonesia] Is basically an entire forest area with houses that dont really have windows or doors. Which basically is what you will find when you go there yourself! As a Indonesian person I never really see any Indonesian easter eggs. And the fact an entire map exists of a island which prob at the time dueing the games events 1960's its quite accurate with the buildings as at the time and now they still use wood as house bases with some of the old houses.
Also I really liked you kinda talked about rollouts for Kalimantan being kinda annoying and being confusing thats basically how it is over here its forests with animals around that god knos what will do.

This and Badwater are the maps I can actually feel secure enough to be able to play Engineer and not care at all if my team don't have my back or if there's 4 other Engineers on the team.
People often complain how some class have broken options, or how other classes have this and that, but NOBODY considers map making as an extremelly important balancing feature that HAS to be considered in the time of creating maps to let the game be played in the way it was intended: A team first person shooter.
On some maps, you will see Soldiers dominating places with a lot of exploitables rocket jumping spots that give him a giganormous advantage in mobility over other classes, Snipers dominating maps with INCREDIBLY unfair sightlines, Demomans dominating on really tight and choky maps, Engineers / Heavies dominating on maps with a single way to advance towards the objective, you get the idea.
This isn't the case with Borneo and Badwater, I've never seen an specific player be the one dominating the game, it always revolves around whose team is more organized and cooperates the most, rather than leaving the job to the Black Box + Kritzkrieg-up-his-ass-Soldier combo.
I love every payload map, since it's my favourite gamemode, but Borneo and Badwater ALWAYS manage to give me the best experiences.
Also, I'm a bit biased towards payload itself as a gamemode in every possible way, since I personally think it's THE actual way to get the "Team Fortress 2 experience", because I love the encouraging of all classes in gameplay rather than Numb Metas or Generalists (Reason why I prefer HighL over Sixes), but that's a discussion for another day.

Borneo as a map is pretty nice, it's got good spots to put buildings, good sightlines and lots of places to mess the other team up Red or Blu, solid 9 out of 10 map imo. My favorite map personally is Barnblitz because of the way the it looks but Borneo is a good second.

Borneo is the map I play when I'm bored of the maps. I can't rocket jump to save my life and a map where I can play a push cart soldier is sometimes very awarding for me.

as engineer main my favorite map is pl_thundermountain blu side, has a chance to sneak a teleporter and put a lv3 sentry in front of red spawn at the first 2 stages, and putting a sentry on top of the map at the last stage is always fun to me.

Borneo is a good map. It had those many paths to go through. It doesn't feel to have many choke points.
Maybe between second to last point and on third point where all paths(even side paths) converge to one spot - tunnel. And yeah, you could try to go to the left but there's usually always an Engie nest.
Still! I love the openess and the amount of space I have to roam around it.
As for aesthetics - I enjoy the amount of nature it has. The green trees and grass, and red/brown buildings. It is a nice fresh feel? to the map. It isn't so industrialised and barren looking like most other maps. Pier is probably another example of feeling fresh. It has vases, a river. Overall, it looks pleasing.
This is why I like Overgrown Upward. It's upward but with lots of trees and not just yellow gravel factory ground all around (although I don't mind it. I like it).
You know what else we barely hesr about? KotH Brazil! I wonder of people ever played it.

gotta say I feel ya when you went on the topic of balances. imo the best maps are the ones that make you want to branch out from your main and allow you to try out the other classes and loadouts and see what you can do. that's why maps like Turbine and Junction fail so hard, because you either go sniper or demo respectively because what the Hell else can you do on them?
personally, my favorite map is Swiftwater. I know everyone complains that it's long as Hell, but honestly that's one of the best selling points to me. it just has more flow compared to the 3 stage payload maps, which can feel like hell for an engie main like me, having to set up 3 times separately and prepping for what's to come. Swiftwater eliminates that and has the 3 stage feel to it without any lull in action. plus I think it's one of, if not the most balanced map in the game right now. huge skyboxes for explosive jumpers, flank routes for scouts, spies, and pyros, sniper sightlines that aren't too op, and well defined building spots alongside more unconventional ones to try out for shits.

It's a pretty nice map and dares to introduce some verticality(! in a payload map! can you believe it!), but its sentry spots are nasty, its sniper spots are annoyingly safe and it's all about those tough to crack holds. Still, it's a miracle even spy manages to be fun on what's essentially dustbowl with more pathways
It's not the peak of the payload gamemode and there's a lot more maps that need more love. Borneo is just mid and just alright.
    Good vid

It's weird that no one talks about the visual design of the maps. You mentioned the cloudy weather, but there's more to it. Like, look, how many jungle maps we have in the game? (Mercenary Park doesn't count, it's a Yeti Park that's just surrounded by jungle) (Banana Bay also doesn't count, it's a Bay) 5? Cool, now how many of them are this popular? 2? Cool, and how many of them are this good? That's right - the one and only - Borneo.

Borneo is one of my favorite maps too, probably the best of payload for sure. It doesn't have any major annoying sentry spots, there's no invincible sniper sightlines, spy is actually allowed to play the game, and there's a good mix of open and closed areas for the other classes instead of a series of narrow hallways like a lot of older maps *cough Dustbowl cough*.
