  • It's Heen! I share my honest review on why I chose RIMOWA Carry On and if $1000 Luggage worth the price :)
When I was looking for new carry on last year, my final choices were RIMOWA and AWAY. At that time I couldn't find many reviews on youtube or blog, so I decided to make a video after using RIMOWA Cabin for 6months. There are few disadvantages with it but I love the design and I don't regret buying it.
Let me know if you have any questions on the luggage or want to share your favorite luggage brand with me :)

I have 3 Rimowas from 3 years ago, they were way cheaper (500usd for the one you're showing). Since LVMH acquired the brand the price doubled. Also, they had features which they removed. For example, where the logo is, there used to be a strap to put 2 small bags on top of your luggage instead of one now. All the repairs were free. Now you have to pay 85usd for the wheel to be changed.
I personally think Rimowa is longer a good investment since the price doubled and the quality and features have gone down.

I bought mine for 450 USD. It's the same as the one in the video; but it's the newer twist model with brown leather accents. Original is the only collection still made in Germany. All others are outsourced to the Czechs or the Canadians. I'm not sure about your experience with build quality; but features have gone down. If you could elaborate on build quality, i.e. an inferior alloy, etc. that would be appreciated.

I liked the away better and it felt stronger. At half the price it feels superior with leather handles and soft Close. Did I mention Away’s life time warranty vs Rimowa’s 5 year warranty. You don't (and didn't) have to pay anything if you're still covered from the warranty. Since a few months they even give a lifetime guarantee and the repairs a smooth like butter.

Thanks for your review! I have both Rimowa and Tumi. As you rightly pointed out, you need to use more pouches in order to prevent your stuff from falling out. The velcro in the Rimowa can also hook on to and damage your stuff, especially clothes that are not in pouches or clothing envelopes. Tumi has the zipper compartment on one side where you can put your clothes or other stuff. It is also expandable for those trips where you unexpectedly ended up with a few more things on the way back. Tumi is around USD850 to USD1,050 for the carry-on. Tumi has more pockets and accessing your computer to pull out for scanning is easier compared to Rimowa. So far, my Tumi carry-on and check-in luggage have lasted more than 5 years. Two of the Tumi check-in bags have been with me for at least 10 years. I am a frequent traveler. The only time I had to trade-in my Tumi carry-on was because the grip on the handle was cracked. They no longer produced the replacement part because it was quite many years since that carry-on was purchased. Hope this helps.

Thanks! I always thought tumi carry on or checked in luggage size bag is way more expensive than Rimowa and never even looked at it haha. Thanks for your personal experience for traveling! I recently found a new product from away travel ( www.awaytravel.com/expandables ) which meets my needs for bigger suitcase and has good price! I am thinking to go with it for checked in baggage. Always wanted to have a nice fabric luggage that can expand but not like black samsonite bag. ( Since there are so many same bags with black fabric samsonite at the airport! ) I will make another video once I get this luggage and do comparison video :)

I suggest if u buy expensive luggage, u invest on carry on. Checkin luggage will not be taken care of the airporters most of the time so its prone to damage. Unlike carry on, u can handle with it care. By having an expensive Carry on, u can expose it to everyone and u can expose it longer coz youll holding it from entrance til inside the plane which will feel u like an elite. An expensive carry on deserves an exposure. haha

Hello Heen Lee and everyone that has been using the carry on aluminum suitcase. Can you share some experience flying with luggage's weight restrictions? Some airlines offer 12kg for economic class, 18kg for business class, and some trains do not limit the weight as long as we can handle ourselves. That would be fine. But some others only allow 7kg for economic tier, and 15kg for business tier. Do you just flight with business (and up) tickets? It makes no sense having the luggage of 5kg and contents of 2kg. The laptop and charger is 2kg already. I have an aluminum checked luggage and I love it, but still hesitate to get a carry on aluminum case. Not to mention, even if I can pack upto 12kg or 15kg, it would be painful to load it to the overhead cabin. In short, how do you cope with these weight issues? Thanks for any tips (if any available).

Yea that's true! Thanks for watching the video :) I was debating between polycarbonate or aluminium but the sales person said aluminium can still look good and more durable even after 10yrs. Also some of my friends have polycarbonate ones that looks really worn out after 2-3yrs!

    • @STAYHEEN
      @STAYHEEN  4 роки тому

Hey :) Also I looked into away and rimowa a lot before buying it! I think if you fly internationally more often, carry on weight is not a big problem. It was really heavy but I managed to fly to china only with one carry on + a shoulder bag on a flight :)

Highly recommend Rimowa or Proteca. Proteca beats Rimowa for polycarbonate luggage, and Rimowa beats Proteca for Aluminum luggage, there isn't a better aluminum alloy luggage than Rimowa in my opinion. The problem with Rimowa, is that only the Original series is still made in Germany, all others have been outsourced to Czech or Canadians.

As much as the Rimowa aluminum cases are beautiful, the polycarbonate Rimoma are so much better functionally. You can squeeze an overstuffed Rimowa (poly) and get it zipped up, no problem. Plus they are lighter in weight and come in more fun colors. Over the last 15 years we have purchased eight Rimowas of different sizes and shapes, all polycarbonate. We love all of them and plan to get a few more. No regrets plus using them brings us JOY!

The Rimowa is clearly of a higher toughness than Arlo Skye or an alternative. The reason why I went with an alternative is that the Rimowa Cabin is officially not small enough to qualify for carry-on size on most American airlines although you can get away with carrying it on most of the time. It's fine for other international carriers. Rimowa needs to make a 22 x 14 x 9 inch alternative for people in the United States. Currently, the case is 16 inches wide. The Cabin S which is 7 inches thick but still 16 inches wide is not a viable alternative. Rimowa needs to shrink the size in the other dimension. I think there needs to be an eventual unified standard for carry on size by all airlines in the world.

Yes the lock keeps poping open on it... i've had things slide out and i've had the lock open on me while walking.. Rimowa said the classic flight lock is delicate and a sales rep even told me he sees it all the time and he would never personally get one himself... wtf?? Anyway i got sick of being on vacation and tying my suitcase closed. Maybe the small version is good, but i would never get the check in version again. Is repair still free? I got the same model but the Cabin Twist, with brown leather accents. I think Original is the only series still made in the original plant in Germany. I only paid 450 USD recently. I will never give it to baggage handlers, it goes with me. I've heard too many horror stories of lost luggage. I've heard wonderful things about the durability, the only problem I have with it is weight, especially with low-weight carry-on rules on certain airlines (CX). Another question I want to know is does it have a wheel brake?

@@STAYHEEN It's so sad they are so strict! I am limited in what I can carry, usually I can only fit 1 sleeved cardigan, and the rest is sleeveless cardigan. If I carry a jacket, I need to carry separately because if the jacket fabric is lightweight (under 10 oz), it will wrinkle, and if it is heavy like I prefer (14-18 oz) with trousers, it doesn't wrinkle but it's heavy, then I have to carry it separately. For the carry on item allowance, briefcases are so heavy nowadays, that I had to get one made out of woven bamboo to get past the weight limit (lighter than polycarbonate). If you or your friends are interested, pk-luggage.com is having a massive 50-60% off sale on Rimowa, some of them even more (70%), because there is recession, so check it out! Nelson I donno if other countries are different! It may sound strange but Korean Government made a limit for korean people who buy at duty free shop over $600, they charge tax for rest of the amount lol.

you travel a lot? i have 4 flights a week, 48 weeks a year, is that considered a lot compared to you? nothing has outlasted my Rimowa. buy it in europe (germany), it's cheaper and most bigger cities airports in the world have a repair shop fixing it for you right away.... who else does that?

wow you really travel a lot! Nothing compare to mine haha :) that’s nice to hear that rimowa is still working fine even though you use them all the time!

Heavy and very, very expensive. Also pretty impractical in terms of internal packing/dividers. I will stick with Samsonite!

Yeah Samsonite is super light but the handle will break off easily :)

I would not pay $50, for this. It looks trashy. Overrated. Their marketing department rely in naive peopel.
Globetrotter, on the other hand, are handmade and looks classy.
