  • Rimowa Carry On luggage can cost around $1000 and can even go up to $1700! So why do people pay so much for a carry on bag?
In this video review I hope to explain why Rimowa is the best suitcase money can buy. And while I do not think this suitcase is for everyone, I do think it is worth it. Let me know if you agree!

I’m a long time Rimowa user. As an airline pilot you can imagine I spend quite a lot of nights away from home. For my carry-on case however I chose for Tumi.
    This has a few reasons:
Tumi recently introduced their “19 degree” range in aluminium which is just stunning.
It’s actually made from thicker aluminium than a comparable Rimowa (you can’t push the case sides inwards like you can with many rimowa’s)
The locks are made from metal (not plastic as they are on the Rimowa) and only require one finger to open and close. Much like a button, there is no latch system like on a Rimowa, you simply “push” a lever down to close and lock the Tumi. Once you get used to this the system Rimowa utilises seems quite fiddly.
The wheels themselves are seriously heavy duty and have a much more secure connection to the suitcase itself (no more squeaky Rimowa wheels!)
Not that it really matters but it has actual dampened handles that slowly retract once you let go of them (shows a level of fit and finish beyond that of a standard Rimowa Topas).
I highly recommend if you’re ever near a Tumi store to have a look at their new range. My check-in bag is still a Rimowa but Tumi’s new 19 degree collection is a serious contender for someone looking to buy a Rimowa, they’re not cheap though!

The 19 degree line is beautiful. The recent stories on FlyerTalk of Tumi warranties have scared me away. I chose B+R based on warranty stories, but Tumi and Rimowa cases still break my neck every time I see them at the airport. I don't worry about warranty for a carry on, but for checked bags it is probably the most important thing after usability.

I am curious how the wheels compare to Rimowa for smoothness in movement. That is a massive reason I love my Rimowa so much. I have a Tumi (not the one you are talking about) and the wheels aren't even close to as good as the Rimowa's.

In all seriousness, All four brands are good, and none of these wheel's broke or snapped apart with me handling, and I hardly experienced no accidental body tears, and seams breaking apart due to PAX over packing. Samsonite spinners are getting better as well.

For extreme travelers I suppose this could be the bag. I only travel twice a month for 2-3 days each. My old Tumi carry on bag lasted over.a decade and still works but it is beat up a bit more than I prefer. I recently got a TravelPro Crew Expert Global for $170 and can tell it’s tougher than the old Tumi. I also prefer two wheels for carry on - more interior space and more stability.

I travel more than 200,000 miles a year. I have one Rimowa Tropicana instrument case that is exactly 30 years old this year. My second oldest is a Topas carry-on 12 years old and going strong. Both are all original. Both are still waterproof. You have to align the hinges from time to time, but the moire dented and ugly they get, the more I love them because they work. I have a Meji large suitcase of plastic shell that was a lot less expensive and very nice, but after 2 years I can see it starting to wear along the zipper and wheels, but maybe can get to 10 years. Both brands are good, Rimowa is best.

i have a rimowa tapas/aluminum version and a tumi. honestly, the suitcases are nice but it's delusional to suggest that these suitcases are worth it because they will last a "lifetime". soft-sided suitcases from tumi will last much longer. the rimowa is prone to denting with the expensive aluminum version.
as with all luxury items, you are mainly paying for branding, potentially better materials, potentially better styling... i buy luxury items because i like the look of nicer materials(assuming they actually use nicer materials) and not because i am trying to convince myself it's a better financial decision in the long run based on items lasting longer. if you are looking for return on investment get away luggage for 1/3 the price with a lifetime warranty.

Hi there, thanks for this video. I’ve not heard of Rimowa luggage before. But, I just like to share that I own 3 pieces of large LOJEL suitcases and they are still in great condition after almost 10 years of use (and I travel at least once a year). They are lightweight and highly durable. Last December, all 3 pieces went over the cobbled streets in Prague old town and I was very concerned that their wheels would come apart and not make it to our apartment. Surprisingly, they remained intact. Each LOJEL luggage is a fraction of what a Rimowa would cost. I know it’s like comparing Coach with Chanel bags. Just my views.

Had Tumi, Travelpro. Now have a mix of Samsonite Black Cosmolite and some Rimowa. They are both high quality, will last a lifetime and serve a different purpose. The only downside is that Rimowa wheels assembly rusts quickly when in contact with salt. I personally have to replace the wheels every 2 years or so. Annoying but they have an excellent after sales service. A real luxury brand.

I used to travel like you for business. For the same reasons you cite, I bought a Rimowa polycarbonate bag back about circa 2008. After more than a million air miles, it is still going strong. My wife bought one about the same time. Mine came with the old matte finish. Hers was the then-new shiny finish. Mine keeps going, her shiny-finish has several cracks - with less than half the air miles travelled. The newer polycarbonate Rimowas now look like my old matte finish. Perhaps they have changed back to the old plastic spec? If you are going for the lighter polycarbonate (instead of the heavier aluminum), I would suggest not getting a discounted (and discontinued) shiny finish and get the new matte finish.

For someone using it as regularly as you eventually you make your money back - but the fact it is heavy is a huge downside. Ok it is durable but airlines are increasingly tight on carry on weight so I'd rather save a few lbs. Also the fact it opens in the middle I find makes you lose space inside - get a conventional bag and packing cubes, those things are the real space savers. Idk, not for me but I see the appeal

I have a couple of these, but the larger size and it has not stood the test of time. The closing mechanism is made of plastic is constantly breaking. As a checked in bag, these get thrown around and the metal rim ends up misshaped and eventually doesn’t close properly. I ended getting a samsonite polycarbonate suitcase that’s holding up much better. But to your point, as a carry on, I am sure it will last much longer. Just don’t check it in. Cheers for the video mate.

    @CD-or8tv 4 роки тому +2

Averaging 600k miles of flying and 150 plus nights of hotel accommodation per annum, I opine there is no better investment than the Briggs and Riley Baseline collection.
To wit, the ballistic nylon construction offers better resistance to everyday wear, spinner wheels are more robust than Rimowa offerings, the externally mounted telescopic handle is multi-stage for ergonomic diversity and improved interior space, the CX expansion system provides better compression, and the lifetime warranty is piece-of-mind worthy of its price segment.
While the Rimowa product offers much in the way of aesthetics, its overall functionality for the perpetual traveler is limited. Though polycarbonate options offer additional exterior storage at reduced cost, it’s limited in scope to slimline consumer electronics and suffers from questionable reliability.
In the end the inflated cost isn’t so much a byproduct of craftsmanship as it is capital for the network of luxury boutiques and fashion-forward marketing. It’s a statement piece surpassed in functionality by many market alternatives.

Definitely a nice carry on. I too travel a lot (roughly 50 weeks out of the year usually) I use a Briggs & Riley spinner garment bag ($825) and a Briggs & Riley spinner (transcend) carry on. ($400) like you why? Well I go through cheap bags at the rate of 2 each per year so for carryon at $50 a bag $100 per year... B&R is guaranteed for life fix or replace all damages no matter who did it. To me that means my $400 and $825 purchases are paid off (a garment roller bag... easily over 100 each and checking gets ruined a lot faster) 4 years in and even checking my carryon usually you don’t see any damage. A little dirty sure but I’m just lazy about cleaning it :)

i'm not saying it's not worth it but Briggs & Riley has lifetime warranty for about $500 ... granted, being fabric it will look pretty bad after maybe 50 flights or so whereas a metal case maybe will have more "character" after getting beat up ... i don't think i will get another fabric luggage because it is hard to keep clean but i do believe Briggs & Riley will stand behind their warranty if it were to actually break.

I have a rimowa carry on. I have just about quit using it as a carryon since it is difficult to fit in the overhead. Once it was impossible on a long flight on a larger plane. The flight attendant was extremely nice and just took it and stashed it somewhere in the crew area. Since I have a lost/delayed phobia due to experience I have gone back to my Tumi. Have you had problems fitting your into the overhead space? I love the way I can pack it. I use one side for shoes, toiletries, cords, etc and the other for clothes. Rimowa is a great bag! I would say if I was fairly sure it would fit in the overhead on most flights I would always use it.

...like you, Om Malik, I bought my set (3 pieces, all silver, of course) around 15 years ago, long before the luxury and designer madness kicked in. Sadly, LVMH has begun a systematic drying out of existing stock from former Rimowa stockists - essentially, part of their business plan is to make the marque a luxury and exclusive item (read; "expensive"). I also notice they no longer sell 2-wheelers, a point which totally puzzles me as there are more moving parts to break on the new 4-wheelers. You know, these pieces used to be fully functional.

BabaStiletto I just have the check-in from old days and it is pretty nicked and dented but love it. Been thinking of buying new one, but rethinking if it is worth the price. I like the way Away looks.

Same here. Got a good selection of the German made Rimowa cases including my trusty cabin bag which has taken 15 years of heavy use and still looks stunning.
As soon as LVMH took over prices went up, quality went down (cheaper chinese wheels, less robust locks and hinges, even thinner aluminium in places) and my local Rimowa retailer of several decades had the brand pulled from them. Hate that the 2-wheelers have gone as well, esp. in favor of multi-wheels that break more easily... and you can't sit on the cabin bags any more as a result.

Bought rimowa aluminum but checked in size - I regret to spend such money . After two flights i the lock buckle broke, took it for repair, on the next flight another one broke. Very frustrating for such price ... after repair of both locks, it happened again after 3 flights. The aluminum shell might be great but what it is good for if you can not lock your suitcase ... next thing, corners are separate part and it is also already breaking apart and nits hd to be replaced. Very disappointed from such purchase. I like rimowa and never had problem with polycarbonate version, but aluminum version is waste of money
