As a Nigerian and Bajan, a lot of African online humor consists of playing random sounds and recognizable clips within a bit. This sort of spills over into a lot of content made across diasporic groups. This video made me cringe so much because I know exactly what he's going for in terms of "humor", but the majority of people this sort of editing humor appeals to, are not the people watching leftist drama on UA-cam.

Even if two people are Autistic ‘on the same level’ I can easily see them still acting very different just because their autism effects different parts of them. Like it might hit a person’s social awareness more than it hits other parts of their thinking and vise versa.

    • @little_flitter
      @little_flitter Рік тому +16

These people are like 'vaush is rude and not socially aware when making edgy jokes' then when it's replied with 'he's not rude, just autistic and relates to people differently' they're like 'STOP USING IT AS A SHEILD'
After using their identity as a shield. Almost every comment under fmifl's video is 'As an autistic person I blah blah'.. that's talking from identity as an authority.. different autistic people think differently. I should know, I am also autistic haha.

    • @masync183
      @masync183 Рік тому +3

@@little_flitter honestly sometimes it's simpler than that. For example, I've only ever seen or heard the r slur used against me and autistic people as a way to make them feel less that human. I still watch vaush because he's right about most things but hearing him say that will never not remind me of how my brain is inherently wrong and how I shouldn't even still be alive. How every breathe I take is really at the liberty of neurotypicals and autistics who don't struggle with the world as much. How I'm other, inherently different, just existing wrong.
I'm sure that that takeaway is never vaushes intention but hey, when I was growing up on the internet and saying the n word, it was never my intention to be genuinely racist either. Just like how when I eat meat, it's not my intention to kill an animal.
But my intentions probably don't really matter to the animal.

    • @little_flitter
      @little_flitter Рік тому +11

@@masync183 Do you also believe that black people should not use the n slur at all then?
I'm also autistic, personally the r slur doesn't come into my vocabulary .. I do say the f slur, but I am A. Pansexual/polyamorous and B. British (the f slur is a synonym or cigarette here). I don't get offended at vaush using the r slur. Why? Because I A. Recognise that he technically has a right to say it, just like black people use the n slur and b. Don't really care since I recognise its an edgy, humorous use and know he doesn't actually believe that.
To further this, was it okay for FMIAFL to call shark the C word?
Im investigating ableism in my PhD, so I understand why you feel that way and have felt that way myself as another autistic person. I personally don't take offense to it because I know that vaush simply uses the word in an edgy debate bro way and doesn't actually cause harm with it outside of the odd audience members offense. Which again, do you think black people should not say the N word or the C word?
Either it's A. They should not and therefore FMIAFL is also at fault for calling another black person the c slur
Or B. When contextualised there are some instances where certain people get a pass, ie a black person can say a racial slur (that is directly related to their skin colour) because they are black and therefore vaush, in context is also not in the wrong here.
It's cognitive dissonance to argue that one these things is bad, but fine when applying the exact same logic to another thing that you decide is wrong. It's the same thing as 'poor people are wrong for smoking!' And 'it's cool when rich people have cigars' same thing, same logic, but ones okay because 'rich' and one is wrong because 'poor'.
Also, who are you to argue that vaush doesn't struggle with the world? He has stated that he doesn't like flying and has sensory issues with it for example... he is autistic and therefore will have struggles even if he doesn't talk about it all the time. I'm autistic, I've had people say 'your to pretty to be autistic' and 'but you don't look it' and whilst out and about I am high masking... yet I cannot walk into a shop alone and hate public transport, meltdown, sensory overloads, experienced burnout a few times... so many people don't think I struggle and on the outside may look fine whilst struggling like fk... selective mutism is another struggle. How do you know vaush isn't the same as that? High masking =/= doesn't struggle.

I feel like a lot of these newer essayists fail to understand what made creators like Contrapoints and Shaun so convincing to a lot of centrists. Over-editing your videos to shit (though it may maintain the viewership of a younger audience) ultimately leads to a more convoluted and confusing argument. This frequently leads to these videos feeling as though they lack substance, as the only point that can really be focused on is “thing is good/bad.” Compare this to many older left-leaning essays, whose minimalistic editing jobs allowed for a much more thorough exploration of the nuances of a particular situation. The more minimal editing style of these older essays also allowed more focus on the actual substance of the argument; more time spent on the script and less on the editing.

Diversity of tactics is important, of course, and having different styles through which we can convey our arguments will always benefit our movement. Having such a style isn’t inherently negative, but strong, well thought-out arguments need to come first. I think this critique can extend to other mediums outside of video essays as well.

Not to mention they literally pretend like criteria used to diagnose autism somehow aren't a thing, autism just makes you a bit quirky and any actual awkwardness is entirely your fault, it's such a weird conservative protestant work ethic approach.
Trotting out Jessie Gender as a "good" autist is very dehumanising, but on top of that her bizarre story is just completely unhelpful and such an extreme niche example. I feel like a lot of these creators are addicted to the *idea* of accountability and being one of the good ones without actually engaging in any deeper level of self examination. Ironically, they are using their progressiveness and their associations with other marginalised creators as a shield against criticism.

I've come across a fair number of toxic autistic people who've used autism as an excuse to be abusive, predatory, grossly socially inappropriate, careless, parasitical, or otherwise crappy, so it's definitely a card people play (often because it works for them, at least for a while).
Ironically, I think "uwu I can't help it I'm awtistic uwu" is weaponized much more often by picrew tenderqueer-types than by neurodivergent "dirtbag leftists" like Keffals and Vaush and their fans.
I think you've hit upon one of the foundational problems here, which is that a lot of people have no patience, compassion, or grace for neurodivergent people who aren't quirky-cute Wes Anderson characters.

The reason "using autism as a crutch" is a red flag is that the strategy actually doesn't work very well. It relies on others mistaking harmful behavior for autistic behavior, but not mistaking autistic behavior for harmful behavior. For better or worse, your average person is way better at picking up on harmful behavior than they are picking up autism symptoms. And this is ignoring the fact there's a significant number of people who don't believe in autism, think autism is a character defect to be "fixed"/"cured" or who otherwise don't have a good opinion of autistic people.
Fundamentally, the "using autism as a crutch" argument assumes autistic people face the so called bigotry of low expectations, as opposed to regular bigotry. Ironically for Foreign Man, this is the exact same argument white supremacists use any time someone attempts to explain systemic racism.

The autistic people can just listen to critic argument is absolutely insane.
I'm not going to say the interviewed person is in the wrong because they might have made a longer argument that nuances that part. But that argument as is is dangerous.
    1) You can just pretend that any critic made to an autistic person is received, but that doesn't mean it's true. Just because something is told in ways that seems clear to an allistic person doesn't mean it's clear to the autistic person.
Just ignoring that point and saying it's hiding behind the autism is like saying a wheelchair bound person who doesn't want to climb stairs is hiding their lazyness behind their disability.
We can understand any critic. But we have to receive it first. You can't just talk to us not accounting for the neurotype divide and blame us for not being the allistic whisperer.
    2) That argument assumes the person making the critic is being honest. Malicious people exist. Every single autistic person has been told they did something wrong when they hadn't by a malicious person trying to weaponize their autism status against them.
The behavior prescribed in the argument is literally: don't think; let yourself be abusable.
    3) It assumes the autistic person is in the wrong. Why would you assume that to be the case?
There isn't a non ableist way to answer that question.

This is why I have a really difficult time knowing if a person who is always sarcastic is being serious or not.
I get so exhausted socializing. Not only am I trying to mask and not come off as weird, but I’m constantly trying to pay attention to people’s body language and facial expressions. @@mickiemalloriethat might be what the videos supposed thesis is but it’s not what it actually builds up to. There are some legitimately good examples in the video. Rowling does use, not just her womanhood, but also her status as a victim of domestic violence, as a shield so she can freely punch down at trans women. Chapelle and Smollett can also kind of fit in with better writing. Chapelle because he punches down at trans people and is unable to even see it as punching down because of his blackness. Smollett, not because he used his identity as a shield. That very clip he included doesn’t show him using it as a shield. It shows him trying to use it as a distraction. But he specifically denies doing it in the first place. But you could definitely include the fact that there is clearly a market to sell that distraction behavior to.
But then he includes Ellen, Miranda sings, and pearly. Yes, those people all suck. But when did any of them hide behind identity? It just seems like they were included because they’re popular figures to hate.
Vaush and keffals could have made sense to include, just not the way they were. Because as it is, the video just makes stuff up about them and accuses them of stuff without backing it up. It doesn’t bother to prove that they were guilty of something, nor that those something’s actually caused harm, nor that they used identity as a shield. Now vaush and keffals being included would have made sense if the point was how often the people criticizing the two would try to use their identities to try to shut the two of them up or to hurt their reputations or to excuse their mistreatment of the two. The fact that the behavior is so common that it’s practically a meme in the form of the mocking ‘vaush/keffals has autism’ jokes would make sense in that video. Foreign Man's videos, while having much more editing, kinda devolve into the same trite "every 5 seconds a meme" type zoomer editing style that I loathe in a lot of gaming videos, and it really impacts the legibility of the videos' subject matter. The fact that he uses this visual and auditory chaos to make mean spirited dogwhistles lowers my opinion of it even further. I'd actually commend the ability to hide meaning in such a snappy format if he had the balls to put to words the same things he implies with it, but he's far too cowardly to actually do that. That shit just rubs me the wrong way.

Yeah, I genuinely did not expect her to go down this road...l'm so sad about it still. 😔
It sucks whenever a Creator™ of Content™ I have enjoyed & supported ends up doing this shit, but it *especially* sucks when so much of their content involves being super duper charitable to people who they disagree with...I feel so blindsided by these Content Creators™ when they've previously established themselves as being VERY capable of having rational, fair, good faith opinions, and have demonstrated how very intent they are on engaging in exclusively open, fair, measured discussions surrounding individuals who have way WAY worst views _(ie. way more conservative views than them)_ than even the most uncharitable + bad faith interpretation of Vaush's opinions.
The ones who have shown they know how to not jump to conclusions, know how shit "evidence" can be manipulated & used, know how to have some perspective when judging relative issues, what's actually important, etc.
The various Content Creators™ who are literally nicer to individuals even *they* acknowledge have done way more *real* world harm than Vaush...The ones who treat Vaush's "fans" or "community" in one way (terribly), while treating the viewers of way worse content completely different (better), despite previously establishing that they're totally capable of recognizing that someone can passively watch a couple UA-cam videos or movies from a certain now ~problematic~ source, and it doesn't automatically make them a terrible person (or tell you shit about the individual viewer's personal opinions)...and so on!
I mean, some of these Content Creators™ at this point view/treat Vaush worse than they view/treat literal fascists, who are *actively* & *unavoidably* hurting them by voting in horrible conservative politicians & spreading support for harmful conservative policies...whose consequences/effects cannot be avoided in the same way they can easily avoid a simple UA-cam channel (which is not even at 500k subscribers yet). 😒
After seeing how empathetically Jessie Gender handled Content Creators™ (and their fan base/defenders) like Dave Chappelle and James Gunn, off the top of my head, I genuinely thought she was better than this.
Same goes to FD Signifier & Contrapoints & Shaun & so many others. Jessie has disappointed me in the similar way, as I think they brand their content & platform similarly...
Which, I admit: I bought into it 100%.
I have egg on my face for sure. Silly of me, to believe they wouldn't be so stupid as to define themselves as empathetic & measured ~intellectuals~ who care about the truth, the big picture, etc. (who, at least, are very much above participating in this kind of shit)...if they aren't actually going to put effort into meeting the standards *they* chose to set for themselves. 😒

Yeah, former Jessie fan here, it really feels like she's going down the wrong path here. I do blame the circles she's been hanging out in, and it probably didn't help when she got dogpiled by J.K. Rowling. That seems to have been the straw that broke her back and either led to the mask slipping, or it pushed her off the edge.
The crowd she's with is super cringe, and it isn't just F.D. Signifier, it's Sophie From Mars, plus a handful of other smaller creators I don't want to draw negative attention to. I hung out on her discord server for well over a year. I've been inside that bubble, and it's really easy to agree with this stuff while you're in there.
In short, I blame the people she's surrounded herself with. She seems to have gone to them looking for a way to help other marginalized communities, and gotten all the worst advice.

Twitter is a big part of Jessie's downward turn, I'm fairly sure. The clique-production, groupthink, and constant feces-throwing and dogpiling on that cursed platform is real. I haven't been on Twitter for almost two years, so I cannot image how much worse it must be now that it's Muskityville.
IMHO Twitter is something for (limited) news and promotion only, and engagement should be limited. A lot of UA-camrs should probably pay to have a social media manager, because it takes a deft hand to balance "my account is for my UA-cam channel, which is a business" with "my account is for me to be my witty self and interact with people", and many people cannot get the balance right. I feel for the smaller UA-camrs who rely on Twitter to build their audience but can't afford that help, though.

But that's what OJ's defense team worked at doing and they got what they wanted. They turned it from a rich dude killing his wife to a black guy wronged by a racist PD. OJ was never a beloved member of the black community until his defense team turned him into one. I didn't even know who the fuck OJ was before the murders.
OJ's wealth only came into it in the fact that he could afford the best defense team that money could buy. White supremacy didn't get OJ off. Weaponized blackness did.
God I remember going to my teacher... we were all watching the TV even at school in Canada an my teacher, a white woman, came into the room and the kids were all chattering about it and she was like "what happened?" and I came up to her with my hands balled into fists like I scored a touchdown and exclaimed "They said he's innocent!" I still cringe out of my skeleton thinking about it.

I'm 100% on your take here, but it brings to mind a quality of oppressed-group advocacy that I think might be necessary; I'm not certain of what I really think here, but let me try to illustrate some nuance: in the rhetoric of oppressors you always have over-the-top (IE wrong or easily disprovable) reasoning being used to oppress. Even if most of the reasoning doesn't land in normie groups, when even some of it does land and isn't questioned, the normie groups will take up the oppression. I kinda think that to undo oppression, or to fight it back, some degree of over-the-top reasoning or action is necessary (or maybe just that it happens and shouldn't be as harshly criticized as the same from the oppressing group).
For example, Vaush has this take that "all Republicans are racist", and he defends that pretty well on directly logical grounds related to outcomes. In general, though, I'd call this take a bit over-the-top. It doesn't land with most normies. He's fighting an uphill battle with this take, though, which is particularly advantaged by being over-the-top. Now, when Vaush backs off to the more reasonable "Republican outcomes are often racist" position, you get a lot of normies who are more likely to consider the point, feeling good that they "critical thought" their way out of the "obvious bullshit" point about Republicans themselves being racist.
So, after explaining my thought poorly, to summarize: I think it's overall quite effective for oppressed groups to use some below-board reasoning and to have some insano over-the-top takes. They move the needle, maybe they're not exactly right/true, but the needle's current position is based on a lot of not right/true takes, so it makes sense to expect it (and in some cases use it) IMO.
I could imagine a bit of this at play with OJ. Everyone felt he was guilty, but if prosecutors can't nail his ass to the wall with overwhelming evidence, then he's not being given the advantages of the time's rich white people (and maybe still isn't, even if they have him dead-to-rights with evidence). To see a black person get similarly extreme benefit-of-the-doubt favor doesn't strike me as bad as when the oppressing group is doing that exact same thing; it's still corrupt, but it's kind of like balanced corruption, which is sadly a step up from the scenario which lacks it.

But what other reason would he have to include Keffals? And even to drive away this suspicion. Despite calling Rico Rants "raccoon rants," and "mr. One of the good ones" this guy has tokens lined up all throughout this video to insist "NOT ALL GAY/TRANS/AUTISTIC PEOPLE ARE LIKE THAT" At every turn. I agree with Vaush that you shouldn't use your identity-based labels like autism to escape responsibility. However, it did just click for me that Vaush is an
    Assertive,
    Sarcastic,
    Autistic person that does
    Live-reaction

    Politics.
Any one of those factors is an opportunity for misunderstanding or misrepresentation, so it's little wonder that he catches as much flak as he does. He does still typically take responsibility for what he says and that is one of the main reasons I respect him, because he has more excuses than most to just give up and assume whatever his intention is will be lost in the static.

"There's a problem with white queer people being racist"
*proceeds to call multiple people 🦝s if they disagree with him*
Like I won't disagree that there's been LGBTQ people that excuse their own bigotry with "oh but I'm oppressed too." I've also seen people in disability support groups claim the same thing. The truth is, we need to work hard to eliminate this stuff together, and excusing it by saying you're a minority isn't going to help anybody.
(Added edit:) ... but that's LITERALLY WHAT HES DOING. FMIFL is just flat out being hypocritical, engaging in the same behavior he's attempting to criticize, and trying to posture himself as the good one; if you disagree, you must be bad, and therefore worthy of being called slurs. It's gross. (end of edit)
Calling people you disagree with slurs doesn't make you look smarter or morally superior, it makes you look pompous and annoying.

I'm autistic, a lot of my friends are autistic, and I've also worked with autistic youths for nearly three years. It's not an exaggeration to say that I've known literally hundreds of autistic people over the years.
Vaush is objectively right - the vast majority of autistic people I know are very progressive, regardless of their race or sexuality. The ones that aren't progressive tends to be apolitical. Of course there are bigoted autistic people (just like there are bigots among every other group of people), but I feel confident saying that it's more rare for autistic people to be bigoted than non-autistic people. This idea that "a lot of white autistic men" are bigots honestly feels like some pick-me shit that you'd say to avoid getting yelled at by the exact type of person who would accuse you of using autism as a shield just for joking about having it.
