    Standard right-wing austerity procedure:
    1. Pretend a successful social program doesn't work.
    2. Defund it until it stops working.
    3. Claim you were right about it not working.
    4. Cancel the program entirely.

the reason that certain STATES see addiction rates rise after implementing more lenient drug policies is bc addicts (many of whose are transient) from harsher states will often go to those states with less criminalization. it’s a no brainer. it just proves that it needs to be a federal thing. it’s not that more people are using drugs, it’s that more people who are already addicts are now moving to the states with better policy

In my experience, the majority of addicts I've met were medicating. Whether that be emotional or physical pain, almost EVERY SINGLE addict I've met started doing drugs to cope with some sort of pain. Did drug use stop over night? No. But I did get back in touch with my doctor (I have ADHD ASD and Dysthymia so after recovery I needed to continue treatment to work).
I spent 3 years an IV user. I’ve been clean since May 2021? To anyone struggling, the intense desires and even memory of the high (more so the injection rush) fades after 6 months (not fully but significantly). I can barely remember what the high of shooting up feels like.

So they just gave up and went back to active addiction because at least then they had something to dull the pain and something to look forward to in their day. Being against legalization of extremely dangerous substances that mental health experts say cause or worsen mental illness or mental health issues and cause drug-induced psychosis is not "stigmatization of addiction". And if you think that drug-addicts are "harmless" or "not that dangerous"... go tell that to a person who have had four murder attempts on their lives by three drug-addicts who were having drug-induced psychosis and you're fucked with looking sane in their eyes. I'm lucky to be alive. And so is my sister. If it wasn't for some safe space where I could call for help or some cops being nearby when it happened, I wouldn't be here to tell the tale. So fuck you. Stigmatizing victims of violent crimes and murder attempts who nearly lost their lives at the hands drug-addicts who refuse to quit using and/or refuse to get real help and constantly have drug-induced psychosis is far more harmful than making it illegal for you to get some of those dangerous substances and legalizing all said dangerous substances. Let us just acknowledge that Ana mentioned the defunding once at the 12 minute mark.
And for the rest of the video refered to it as "changes in the program from 2012" as opposed to just calling it a lack of funding...
In essence, she does not drive home the point or the problem. She included it in the video yes, probably a subconcious attempt to seem fair and balanced. But snuck it in somewhere in the middle and never mentioned it again, only refering to it in abstract so it's easily ignored and forgotten about.
Over the much larger message which she repeated, like she was screaming it from the rooftop. "Portugals policy FAILED".
As she said many times, which will therefor be the key takeaway from the video for the viewers. Like "Most likely the people implementing it here, haven't seen the most recent reports of how the program failed"... When it didn't, when it's an economic issue.
Ana knows rhetoric, she knows to reinforce your point by repeating your thesis, if you say the policy failed 3 times, people will remember it, if you say the program was defunded once people will forget. Ana also should know the model of your 2nd strongest argument 1st, weakest argument 2nd and your best argument last, because people remember the begining and the end the most.
Point is, the defunding which should've been the strongest point, really got played as the most forgettable and weakest bc of the way she decided to talk about it.

23:04 I’m surprised Vaush doesn’t see how bad her argument is with the safe injection site. Why would it be easier for a family to stage an intervention if the guy shot his speedball in a backalley behind a dumpster? It’s a lot easier to intervene if he goes to the shooting site. It’s a lot easier to know where a drug addict is if there are places designed for them to be in, instead of them hiding. These facilities don’t only have nurses, they have resources for detox, for people who are very hard to reach otherwise.
The other guy says he has to drive 1.5 hours to go to the site because otherwise it creates problems with his family. Does she think those “problems” are them finding out? They obviously know. The problems are a lot more likely to be him getting kicked out.
And I’m sorry if shooting himself in the neck is too gross for Ana, but that’s just what they do, injection site or not. I’ve seen people injecting all over their body except for scalp, tits and ass (no veins). Neck and dick are probably the worst, but what are we going to do about it, make sure they hide more so we don’t find out? At least at the site they don’t do it with dirty needles, and are supervised by a nurse. The real problem with these sites is that the doctors/nurses are not allowed to help them inject (for legal reasons). This is why the nurse is just standing there in the article. The guy would probably have a few more workable veins, and there would be almost no danger of hitting an artery.
And what does she mean by “staging an intervention”? Kidnapping your loved one, throwing them at a detox centre, pay and leave? Congratulations, they just walked out the back door and you’re $10K poorer.
She’s giving off strong nimby vibes. She doesn’t like their reality, so the solution is to hide them away from our sight and punish them for daring to do something that makes her uncomfortable.

theres also an argument that a drug use center makes it easier for people to make the choice to overcome their addiction easier then family. Not only is family unfortunately unreliable not everyone has good families theres also the problem of "ok ill go tomorrow" *doesnt go tomorrow* meanwhile in the drug use center. "ok ill go tomorrow" "sir we have a class on right now you can attend while your here do you want to try it?" convenience is a powerful tool

Decriminalisation, and support, works for a whole lot of things: prostitution, drugs, etc.
America's "crime" culture is pretty weird.

She's got that classic contrarian mindset. Thinks that having some kind of "unpopular opinion" means that you're just ahead of the game. Like some kind of persecuted Galileo-type character. That shit really came full-circle when the contrarians with small credentials and large imaginations latched on to the whole flat-earth idea a few years ago. You would think that people would have become disenchanted with contrarianism after that, but it almost feels like it has become more popular than ever to think of yourself as some kind of transcendental four-dimensional superthinker with an imagined inhuman emotional resilience and ability to accept the "hard facts". I swear it must be this 21st century super-weed doing this to us, that shit is sus.

The point made is "We tried Portugal's NATIONAL policy on a LOCAL scale in a few places and the results aren't as desirable as we want..."
Well, no shit, Vance! Why would national policy and inconsistently applied municipal policy bring the same results?

As someone from Portland, Oregon (now living in Salem). We don't have enough resources to help those who are using drugs. They made a big move policy without having anything to substantially back it up. Our psychiatric care here is absolute trash too because there's not enough resources to help with that. It's a fiasco over here.

I live in Scandinavia, this is completely normal here as well.
I have worked as a private investigator and often crossed paths with people falling trough the cracks of society.
These measures when properly funded works remarkably well when combined with decriminalization.

Thank you so much for this video, Vaush. I'm a mental health nurse and lecturer and what you said is completely correct. This mode is harm minimisation and there are so many studies showing that this model, of safe injecting rooms, not judging people, supporting them in their choices to minimise harm, actually works to get people into treatment. We have these safe injecting rooms in Australia and they have helped clean up the streets and save lives as nurses are on site and the have about 5 overdoses a day, and they revive the people.

My girlfriend ten years ago was from a larger mid-size city in France. She was a pharmacist, And a regular part of her job in this nice pharmacy in the city centre was to hand out clean needles and syringes to drug-addicts and TEST the drugs they brought with them. This ensured that they didn't share needles, didn't therefore spread illnesses, but the testing also ensured that the addicts knew that they were not pumping the most disgusting garbage into their veins and also had a professional neirby to help. This definititely helped get people off the streets. It helped addicts have regular contact with healthcare professionals, incredibly raising the amount of addicts who actually got help getting away from the drugs because they actually got to bond with those who wanted to help them, allowing them to trust the pharmacists.
    ...
So yeah, decriminalization all the way!
