I burn my clutches to smithereens every 20,000 km or so and I mean burnt to bits. I'm running the 2009 Versys 650 and I'm a pretty big guy, well no actually I'm a REALLY big guy and I'm brutal on the clutches. I launch like the hounds of hell are on my ass every time I take off and I use the friction zone like mad in traffic so I don't have to put my feet down and that reallllllllly destroys clutches fast. I actually keep a set of just okay clutches in my bike from an ER6N that I did for a buddy just in case I lose my clutches while on a trip. Lastly EXCELLENT video! It's people like you whom take the time to video, edit and post such thorough videos that save people so much time and money... Thanks!
2009 - Ninja 650R ***CONFIRMED*** , you do not need to empty the oil to open the clutch cover. Just made sure the bike is on the side stand. I just did my oil change like 700 miles ago so I was thankful I didn't need to even though I had all the supplies ready for it.
If your clutches burnt all that crap is going to be in your oil, clogging various delicate parts. You don't want that. For $20-30 dollars for new filter and oil it's much better overall to just change it.
Have you changed your clutch yet? I also have a 22 and I'm wondering if this video would apply to our newer model as well? I thought there may be a difference in the clutch pack, like something to do with a slipper clutch or something?
Thanks for another great video. Been looking into replacing my clutch springs - will likely do it after spying your video and peeking at the service manual. Getting just a smidge of slippage at highway speeds ~65-70. The springs that come stock are known to slip... Been using the Mobile1 - M110 filter. Gives the bike just a tad bit more oil and a bit more filter area.
Its got tons more grab now. I really like it. thanks for the tip on the filter. next change I will give it a shot. I'm sure I missed something somewhere. :) (like the all important torque specs) If you have the service manual its always a good read.
I never had any slip on the interstate or hard acceleration. Minor slippage in 1st gear clutch-ups. Lots of slippage in 2nd gear clutch ups. AFTERWARDS with 18% stronger barnett clutch springs I can raise the wheelie approximately 18% easier. I just finished my install and test drive. I still need to experience the clutch a bit more before I do pinging 2nd gear clutch ups.
Thank you for your vid bud. I bought a 2009 Ninja at 6k. I put 20k on it in about 10 months. I do all my own work. I started slipping in 4th and thought a gear might going bad, but then I remembered I adjusted the clutch weeks back. I'm hoping a re adjustment will do the trick.
Have you ever had trouble putting on the clutch cover back on? I changed my plates, but now when i install the clutch cover and move the actuator arm to the right it feels as if it's hitting something and most possibly the Push-rod. When i take out the clutch springs and reinstall the clutch cover the actuator arm moves like it should and works properly and it feels like there's tension. Has this ever happened to you? I'm currently waiting on a torque wrench hoping the bolts for the springs not being torqued to specs is causing the problem.
As 50calSniper says.... It also helps if you NOTE its position when taking it off and do not touch it. The actual is fully turned counter-clockwise and seemingly toward the person working on the bike.
Hello. I fell and broke my cover. In order to replace it besides the gasket do i need to put silicone gasket where the two halfs of the engine meet, where the two dowels are?! Thanks!
Went and replaced my clutch plates with some aftermarket ones, I think the gasket is loose it leaks oil now, so I will order a new gasket. Also the clutch cable gets loose and I have to readjust when it rides for a bit and it becomes hard to shift.
did you justt do a check or did you replace anything? it shouldn't be loose at all. however you should be able to make it the same length. it should go back on the same way it came off.
I realized that I didnt put on the hub cover on properly idk why it didnt go in but I figured it out and the pin on the clutch cover went in smoothly the next attempt. now only problem I have now is i accidentally passed the torque on one bolt on the clutch basket/hub so i have to redo the job :(.
Great video. Have you done a brake pad replace video or clutch cable lube or replace? I'm new at riding and I'm trying to learn as much as I can to do my self...the dealerships are a rip off!!! I do also have the service manual. Thanks again.
My ninja 250 only has 10000km on it but the clutch engagement near the end of the clutch lever... Would it be clutch cable play or my clutch? Its a 2010 to i cant seeing it being the clutch. I hope.
Braedon H it really depends on how it was ridden. i would try adjusting the clutch cable first and see if that solves the problem. im not sure where the adjustment is on the 2010.
After I was done putting everything back together mybclutch cable was super loose. I don't know how to tighten it any more.. It should have not been loose since I didn't mess with it
hey 50 cal. I'm replacing my clutch on my 2014 kawasaki 650 abs. Was wondering if you had any information on if it's basically the same way to change it. I def don't wanna pay another 200 for someone else to change it if I can just use this video as a step by step guide.
I unfortunately totaled it in January. i would do more walkthroughs if i had another one. or if someone would lend me a bike. TheWizechatmgr is also doing videos on the 650, they should be applicable to your bike.
hey can you give me a rough estimate how much all this cost you?i found the same bike on criaigslist for a cheap price that needs a clutch.i would"t mine doing the clutch work depending on the money.
Remember the specifications for torque force is measure in INCHES/LB instead of foot/lbs. You need to do the necessary conversion. 1. Clutch plates kit $150 2. Gasket $6 3. Torque Wrench $30 4. Clutch-Plate remover tool $10? . The satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself: priceless!
If you can also have a chance to do a video of removing the oil pan, I appreciate it...some of mechanics that I spoke too told me that at least, 20k-30k km, need to check the oil pan for any deposit...been using only a Castrol Power 1 Fully synthetic on my bike and change oil every 4k km..
This job is pretty much measured in INCHES/LB not foot/lobs of torque! HERE IS A LINK TO THE SERVICE MANUAL: www.magnum1.com/magnum/Ninja-650/650_Manuals/Ninja-650-Service-Manual.pdf Out Casing clutch cover: 35 inches/lbs Clutch spring bolts: 87 inches/lbs
I have a 09 zx6r my clutch lever would not engage then I would adjust it. then it would engage after a week of use I had to adjust again until I adjusted it all the way. I checked the clutch and it look fine. got any ideas what it could be. thanks
I don't know about the 250, but I just did this on my 2007 650r, it's the same as this video. Before you start the repair, make sure you have a replacement gasket, your new plates soaked, liquid gasket maker, and moly-grease (or a synthetic moly-fortified). Use the manual! This video gives you a great visual, but there's several other steps you may need to follow.
Hey man I loved your video it really helped me I have a few questions about a suspension and forgues if you would mind hitting me bank please thank you very months man
Awesome video! You saved me about 150$ taking my 02 zx6r to the shop! This is way easier then I thought!

I just came here to learn how to change my clutch and I’m sick to my stomach watching this guys last video....... so sad .......
Thanks for this. I’m using this tutorial for my 2022 Ninja 650 clutch replacement. Burned the hell out it 😂😂😂
Almost killed mine in 6k doing wheelies
Have you changed your clutch yet? I also have a 22 and I'm wondering if this video would apply to our newer model as well? I thought there may be a difference in the clutch pack, like something to do with a slipper clutch or something?
What happens if u missed the put the plate back exactly how u got it
Please help !! I have a Kawasaki Ninja 400rr 2011 I would like to know if the clutch disc are the same than ninja 650

Any slippage at all at high end in 6th? Just wondering...
nope. none.

Two years and the clutch is worn? What were you doing?
I followed your video to the t now I have to much slack in my clutch and the arm won't hold position...
Rest In Peace ❤️ seemed like a great guy. Watch his most recent video if you want to cry

Sorry to inform you but the uploader committed suicide around 2 years ago. His suicide note is the last upload on his channel.
@@raftash5279 that’s crazy I just checked
Is the process the same for 2014 650? If so, where do I shop for a new clutch and seal? Thanks 🙏
Idk if I’m late, but Motosport imo is the best motorcycle/off road site especially in the Midwest their shipping is awesome
Have you ever had trouble putting on the clutch cover back on?

You have to have the actuator arm in just the right position when you put the cover back on. It may take a tad bit of fiddling to jet it just right.

My 07 ninja 650 is the exact same process! Thanks dude!! 🙏🏽
I have a 2008, how hard is this to change?
@@levbabayev9089 not too hard, just follow the steps on this video! I watched it as I did it
Which clutch kit did you buy?
Hello. I fell and broke my cover. In order to replace it besides the gasket do i need to put silicone gasket where the two halfs of the engine meet, where the two dowels are?! Thanks!
Saved me about 600 bucks with this video !! Thanks
600 bucks?! Who the hell are you taking your bike to?
Mind Riot TV
dealership
Went and replaced my clutch plates with some aftermarket ones, I think the gasket is loose it leaks oil now, so I will order a new gasket. Also the clutch cable gets loose and I have to readjust when it rides for a bit and it becomes hard to shift.
Great video. Play at 1.5 speed or faster and you get all the same info in less time.
Hi. The manual states to put molybdenum disulfide grease on the shaft that release the pressure plate. Did you put new moly grease? Thanks
Roderick Cavallo I did.
50cal5NiP3R you just put a little bit right? Does it get mixed with engine oil?
Roderick Cavallo correct. just a little bit. although there is never such thing as too much lube.
quick question how did you install the clutch cover? Im having a hard time with the cable, its loose and I dont know how to get it back to how it was.
did you justt do a check or did you replace anything? it shouldn't be loose at all. however you should be able to make it the same length. it should go back on the same way it came off.

Angel Trejo rock on. i'm glad you figured it out.
Why didn’t you make the bits with a black marker pen and mark the main bit in the bike then you know how they go back in
How much were they? Do the steel plates come with the EBC? Do you have to replace both kinds?
Dan Jensen yes both the steel and fiber should be replaced, i think i paid 100 bucks for them.
Great video. Have you done a brake pad replace video or clutch cable lube or replace? I'm new at riding and I'm trying to learn as much as I can to do my self...the dealerships are a rip off!!! I do also have the service manual. Thanks again.
i haven't yet although i will do a brake pad video soon. clutch cable hasn't stretched on me yet.

Ya i got it adjusted it. Its perfect now
Im glad you got it all figured out.
After I was done putting everything back together mybclutch cable was super loose. I don't know how to tighten it any more.. It should have not been loose since I didn't mess with it
strange that it was so loose. you need to make sure that your springs are not too tight and that your clutch shaft is catching on the arm correctly.
Know its a bit too late to comment.
But the plate put in at 11:32 min of the video was put correctly or in the wrong groove?
do you know about a whistling sound? does the clutch bearing does that?
Define whistling sound? Try and record it? I hadn't experienced it.

TehZagar It should be the exact same as mine. the 2012 was the first with the new redesign. all my 2012 ninja 650 videos should apply to your 2014.
Alright thank you. I'll be letting my friction plates sit over night in some new oil so prolly 12-14 hours. Thank you for this video.
50cal5NiP3R also you should make more video of the 650 honestly not huge of a market for walk through for certain things.

I think I spent about 120$ all together.

Ernest Palaboy unfortunately i totaled the ninja in a snowstorm early this year.
why is the last friction plate rotated 1 over ?
Alfonso Ramos i have learned to put things back how they came out.
Hey there,is that a 650r or just 650 and how many plates in total did u use?
Thanks
650 and 650r are the same bike, later models dropped the r
Do you think it's the same process for a 2009 Kawasaki Er6n?
Yep :)
Or rather what brand
that's normal engine oil you're soaking the plates yes?
yes
i have a 250r ninja 08 need to replace the clutch line i put it on 1st and dies out on me
+juan001 juan001 ninja 250's arnt exactly my speciality.
how many miles on the bike when you replaced the clutch?
11k just over a year old
alright thank you
Your adjuster is bottomed out. Is that how you knew the clutch was fucked?
Hey! Great video, where did you order your kit?
I got my kit on amazon.
what is the torque measurement for the bolts?
Alfonso Ramos i dont remember. it can be found in the service manual. that can easily be found online.
This job is pretty much measured in INCHES/LB not foot/lobs of torque!
HERE IS A LINK TO THE SERVICE MANUAL:

ive done it so many times I don't even torque wrench anymore. but good info for the rest.
I have a 09 zx6r my clutch lever would not engage then I would adjust it. then it would engage after a week of use I had to adjust again until I adjusted it all the way. I checked the clutch and it look fine. got any ideas what it could be. thanks
Mario Andalla sounds like your clutch cable is stretched out. I would highly recommend replacing it.
"Don't play with that", my kinda warning
Is it the same with a 2006 ninja 250 ?
I'm not sure on the older models
I don't know about the 250, but I just did this on my 2007 650r, it's the same as this video. Before you start the repair, make sure you have a replacement gasket, your new plates soaked, liquid gasket maker, and moly-grease (or a synthetic moly-fortified). Use the manual! Why are you so pissed! 😂😂. You sound so out of breathe. 😂
Bro, he committed suicide about 2 years ago...these are the symptoms of his depression.
@Ernie the Giant Chicken His last upload is literally a goodbye video.
Whoever's bitching should put their er6 clutch change video link first. Then well talk. Lol
Thank you this information helps alot
Haven’t blown my clutch yet but… just in case
Thank you so much for this tutorial!!!
lol it doesnt matter if you turn the clutch plates, there is no differentiating teeth.
MechRider89 didn't mean exactly Litteraly. Also the last one has a special groove just for it to be off a bit.
Bel video ma non c'è la traduzione in italiano?
Non parlo italiano
Hey man I loved your video it really helped me I have a few questions about a suspension and forgues if you would mind hitting me bank please thank you very months man
Also i just bought the bike
This is so depressing
What kind of steel plates did you use?
they are EBC Plates. or i guess they were.
