Much respect for this video. As a black educator in the USA, I'm always hunting for literature written by black authors to recommend to my students. We need more literature written by our people that tell our stories.
Personal opinion every woman should read Joys of Motherhood at least once in her life time. The book is so so underrated. The book was my introduction to African literature.
I love Achebe’s books !! Arrow of God is just what you said. It’s such an educative book.❤ He’s such an icon!!! I always say he’s still living even though he’s passed! Chimamanda’s novels are exceptional, things around your neck made me use my highlighter for major key points when I was reading it !❤ I started reading Buchi Emecheta’s novel from basic school! I have almost all her novels . She explained Igbo culture so beautifully and I learn every day from her books . Her death still hurt me today . 😢 Questions for Ada was recommended by you when you uploaded it on your stories, I cried, and laughed when reading that book 📚! Well done Ada Dimma ! I love this video ❤
This is why I love you Dimma, you're multi-faceted. For me its 1. Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga 2. Things fall apart by Chinua Achebe 3. Half of a yellow sun by Chimamanda N Adichie 4. Heart of Redness by Zakes Mda 5. Family affair by Sue Nyathi
My favorite video to date, it was so nice to hear your take on the books. I read Chinua' s Things Fall Apart in high school literature in Kenya. I loved the book! I had no idea it was part of a Trilogy! I will be sure to buy the other books. Out of your list I have also read half of a yellow sun and watched the movie, the book is far better, I bought this at Barnes &Noble in the US, the book was so lovely and vivid and brought back a piece of Africa that I missed so much. Now, I want to read all the rest of the books you recommended. Thank you so much for compiling the list, I am sure I will enjoy this trip
Nigerian literature is so underrated! Rotimi (stay with me) and the secret life of Baba Shegi's wives are definitely my favorites. Looking forward to reading the books you talked about that I haven't read yet next year!!
I have read every single one of these books!! And these are my ALL TIME faves as well! (Not just African literature). In fact, I am unable to read a lot of non-African literature these days. Such a struggle. I’ve just been smiling from ear to ear watching this! Thank you Dimma!
I love your list. I've read 8 of those in your list. My own recommendations are : -Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga -This Mournable body - Tsitsi Dangarembga -Under the udala tree by Chinelo Okparanta -Victory by Masimba Chakombera - Walking still by Charles Mungoshi -Scarlett Song by Mariama Ba -To my children's children by Sindiwe Magona -Go tell the sun by Wame Molefhe. My list consists mostly of Zimbabwean writers because I'm Zimbabwean lol
I've read "stay with me" and boy the way you're not ready just like she said. finished the book in one day. The way my blood presure was rising from the start to the finish 😮💨
A friend sent me this link and I love. As an African literature lover and student, I'll say that people underrate African writers but the truth is they're WONDERFUL! There's no other way to describe them. I'm so much interested in reading and have read almost everything you mentioned and I feel you are good with descriptions. Thank you for doing this for African literature. ❤❤❤
I remember reading Half of a Yellow Sun in one night! It was exam period in uni and the person who lended me the book was going to travel the following day. Sometimes I wonder where I got that energy from, cos now I can barely finish a book in one month🫣 such a solid solid book❤
Love your review, darling. Could you please help us ask Chimamanda where she kept Kainene? It still hurts that Kainene didn't come back😢. I love all Chinua Achebe's and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's books. These authors make me happy. Right now, I'm trying to choose a favourite between PURPLE HIBISCUS and AMERICANNAH❤. BABA SEGI'S WIVES is a wonderful story, too. Likeeeeeeee😲😂❤. I love it so much. Babes, you should read NEARLY ALL THE MEN IN LAGOS ARE M*D, BROKEN, STAY WITH ME, I DO NOT COME TO YOU BY CHANCE... They are all beautiful. 🥰💃🌹😍😊😘
This is the beeesssttt video ever, not so many Nigerians like to read, i was forced at first but it's become my best thing such a hidden treasure, 😢😢 just that books are expensive, any caring person should feel free to send me books 😊
I can't express the amount of love I have for Nigerian authors. I have read 4 of the 12 books and totally agree with your reviews. Secret life of Baba Segi's wives, Half of a yellow sun, The thing around your neck and the Girl with the louding voice. I look forward to reading more next year and I'll get some of the books you've recommended. Thanks!
Absolutely love this video Dim Dim. The way you reviewed TSLOBSW was exactly how I felt. So simple to read, funny and overall amazing. I've never read TFA and JOM but they are now on my kindle reading list. You did an amazing job with this review 👏🏽💖
Hi! This is my first ever comment on UA-cam but I just HAVE to thank you. I found this video because I wanted to read more books by African authors and I was immediately curious about Chinua Achebe because you spoke so highy of him. Long story short, I started Things fall Apart a couple of days ago and I haven't even finished it yet but it's beautiful, I know it will forever be one of my favourite books! Thank you, thank you, thank you for introducing me to this great author. ❤
I read "Stay With Me" this year! It was the best book I read this year. The line that touched me the most was - "There is no god like a mother". I loved it.
Half of a Yellow Sun kept me up and I read it in one night. That’s how impactful that book was to me. It remains at the top of any book recommendation list I make for anyone. The writing transported me right to Biafra and I’m a little Ghanaian lass. ‘The African trilogy’- by Mr Achebe remains among my favourite reads. Just like you, Dimma, ‘Arrow of God’ was my favourite of the 3 reads.
Dimma, you just reinvigorated an interest in these books for me. I have all but two of them and they are either sitting on my bookshelf or on my kindle. I am starting The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives. Thank you for doing this video.
Feels so good to know that I have actually read all of the books you mentioned except the collection of poems… ps. A proud literature girliiiii😁 thank you Dimma.
Stay with me! 😂 A BOOK! Your review is exactly what I felt reading it - “Eiii ahhhh ehnnn?” Absolutely loved it 😂 I’ve read most of the books you reviewed and loved them! Would love to see more of this ❤
Greetings Dimma from Kenya. I have never been a book enthusiast but the way you've talked about these books you have totally changed me and made me be interested in reading. Thank you dear❤❤
As a fellow booklover, this video makes me so happy because I also share the similar joy in reading the same titles. And you have now rekindled my love for the trilogy by 'Chinua Achebe' that I read almost 30 years ago. Please make this a series 💕.
I read things fall apart when I was really young. Junior high thereabout. I think I have to read it again, listening to you. Another book I read that I loved at that time was Efuru, by Flora Nwapa…good times. Thanks for sharing your faves
This is one of my favourite videos by you, I'm South African and would have to google or ask friends how to pronounce some names but reading about how rich the Igbo tribe for example was and is from these novels by China Achebe or Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was a treat I can see that you READ the books and got into them, the way you summarised each one, I might re-read them thanks to the video lol
I totally agree with you on Half of a Yellow Sun. A masterpiece of writing, I couldn’t put it down. Thanks for the books reco I’ll definitely check those I haven’t read yet .
Dimma, this is my second time watching this video. First time after watching this I ordered stay with me and I do not come to you by chance and omg such beautiful books. I loved this ✨! Made me happy, that I've read most🤭 Funny enough, I also read 'girl with a louding voice' because of Abi Dare's esay in 'of this our country'. Tbh I can relate with not wanting to read 'half of a yellow sun' because it's about war, I just recently read it and became a true CNA fan, having read all her works 🤭 Also please watch the movie adaptation, it's actually prettyy good ❤
