Building the range hood was a bit daunting when I first started to think about the design and build. I ended creating a simple frame to start and adding some shape to the sides to create a silhouette that was both soft and structural!

Thanks so much for watching and I hope you enjoyed. Leave any future video ideas you would like to see in the comments below and don't forget to subscribe!
Between you and MaCenna, I'm starting to think I can do things in my house I'd previously have hired someone else to do. You two are awesome! You have great design sense, but you provide so much more to your viewers by showing how you do it yourself.
I feel the saaaammmeee!!!!! My tool box and supplies might need its own storage cabinet soon. 😅😅😅
Awww thank you for such a sweet comment!
I got so inspired by them and i a ready design and work on 2 houses and I'm about to start on my next one , you shoud do it! Find your style and look for inspiration all around you and have funn step by step!!!!
P.s: be patient it get crazy some times!! 🙂🙂🙂😊😊😊

AHHHH I LOVE IT!! So subtle yet striking yet organic at the same time
Thank you!!! I watched your video first 🥰
You two are killing it right now with these home renovations!
You guys should totally take master classes! Team up and design homes ❤ soooo good ❤
I can not get enough of you and MaCenna. You are both amazing. I do not want this series to end.
MaCenna’s comment should’ve ended with …all the things… 💙!
I love that Drew went from showing us fun DIY decor crafts to showing us how to be full-blown custom contractors ♥
Yes, as if has always done it! Incredible!
I personally would have brought the hood further down to where the marbel shelf is now, and only add shelf slates on each side of the hood. Usually, it's mentioned in the instructions manual the optimal distance between the stove and the hood (to me, it seems a bit too high up) Also, even though it would have kind of ruined the aesthetic, I would have opted for the front panel to be a door, so that I can access if necessary. But other than that, visually, it looks stunning. You always have great ideas!
Marble is not combustible, so I’m not mad at the shelf. For some reason I thought the rail was for spatulas and ladles. The pots may get some splash back. Performance is not too much of a concern. We don’t know the range Drew selected. So it’s impossible to make recommendations without doing a BTU conversion to CFM’s and look at the clearance. People are too quick to judge in the comment section.
yeah I don't think if it will be effective if it's so high up. We have shelves either side aswell but in the middle the hood or else it would be to far away to do anything.
I think the hood looks great. I am worried about the height and effectiveness of the hood also. I wonder if the fan vibration would crack the plaster or the cooking fumes and grease will stick to it and make it hard to clean. You might find a custom vent hood made of stainless steel in the future. One more thing…I don’t know what the code is in CA but where I live there are height and material codes because of fire. I do hope it works for you as I think your ideas are beautiful. I just want everything to work out.
@@erinmoore9681 they just gave their opinion based on observation. it was pretty neutral and didn't come across as judgy at all
Good points on both sides. We’ll see what happens when the kitchen is done. The insert can always be replaced with something more powerful if Drew notices performance issues. No hate, just thoughts.
Drew’s skills have exponentially increased. This vent hood is next level.
I HAVE CONCERNS. 😂
1) the vented hood came out spectacular!
2) what if the vent hood needs service. Such as motor problems or electrical issues? How will you go about accessing that portion of the vent hood without ripping it all out first?
2) with the vent hood so high above the range and the shelf above it, will smoke, steam etc., still be able to be directed into the vent hood?
kudos to Kevin for his help and talent (he needs a little love). very professional tools, cardboard and a pot lid. whatever works, looks amazing!
Haha, ventilation removes the HOGS -- heat, odors, grease, smoke. You should be running your ventilation every time you cook or all of that gunk will end up covering your cabinets and making them sticky/gross. I love, love, love your design aesthetic, content, personality, videos, and creativity. Thank you for all of that. There are a few people who have mentioned the size and the height of the range hood. For the most part, they are correct. Also, you should add up the BTU's of all of the heating sources (burners, oven, etc.), and then make sure your CFM from the vent are adequate to cover all of them. Typically, your ventilation will be one size larger than your range (ie: if you have a 30" range, you'll want a 36" vent hood. There are several reasons why your vent hood might be a fire hazard as well. Someone has mentioned those reasons below me, but now, I can't find it. Signed, a kitchen designer and appliance expert.
You're doing such a great job at honoring your house's heritage and still making it stylish. Simply beautiful!
Drew, your vent hood design is so creative. In my 18 years in the business of kitchen design and architecture, haven’t seen one like it. Keep up the good designing. 💛
Shea Mcgee did a very similar range hood style and shelf in the new season of her show... absolutely gorgeous
Just bought a house and it's a new build so very builder grade....ugh, I know. There's so much I'm going to do to the house to make it more custom but one thing I'm doing for sure is to remove the microwave from above the stove (literally hate that....not sure why anyone would think that's ok). I'm going to replace it w a vent and was seriously considering doing a plaster custom vent hood cover, to hide the hood but also to look beautiful and match my off-white cabinets. Then I saw this video. It's fate. I'm sold on this beautiful style and cannot wait to make my own. Thank you for the beautiful inspiration!
Drew… you have grown into a DIY,interior Designer, Teacher, fashion designer guru 🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💙🇬🇧xxxx
Great job Drew! You and MaCenna are like brother and sister designers.❤️
Exactly..love them both ❤
Truly!
both went to fashion school and now doing diy's/interiors. wow
You could've hung the pot rack drilling through the shelf instead of drilling into the wall ...
@@lauralee2248 that wouldn't have looked as nice and polished tho imo ...
Who else had to rewind a cpl of times to watch Drew do his happy dance when he got the vent hood up and turned it on??? I loved it! lol Great job Drew!! As always! Took a lot of confidence to take on such a task in your kitchen and you nailed it! Can’t wait to keep watching the rest of the house come together ! Thank you for bringing us on this journey with you! 😊♥️
Lol pure joy
Haha me too!! 🤣
😂😂 loved it
I did too 😂
Lone, I am thoroughly impressed. One of my pet peeves are the range hoods that are oversized, overly ornate and gaudy they become the focal point of the kitchen. It is a fan, so NO sense in making those so ornate and big, they steal the show. This does the job, but is inobtrusive we can now appreciate the other things going on in that room. At first the curves seemed unnecessary but they really help to blend the hood into the wall and that architecture, making it even more subtle. Also very impressed with the way you built it, now with the box the noise should be greatly reduced. I have never heard of "poly board either, but what a great thing, this would take forever to use drywall. This design and execution could not be improve upon. Maybe use a metal drywall corner bead for the bottom lip, so it is not easily chipped (the same thing you would use on an arch)? Congrats Lone and much respect. Anybody could use this design idea, even without the curves, and painted the same color as the walls. It has an adobe vibe, in keeping with your Spanish house, but without the curves, it would not be. The beauty is in the simplicity. WOW, Fantastic. A++++
Why do I just feel like this hood design is revolutionary?! Like how did you take something that is normally so boring and make it SO cool!!
Drew, it looks gorgeous!
I fear it’s too high up and too far in for it to be very effective for cooking though. I hope I’m wrong
Those are VERY strong vents, my parents had one, sucks the piolet light off so dont think its gonna be much of a problem, smoke rises, it wont stay below the shelf
@@robinmp8300 I would love to see that shelf removed! No real purpose and too thin for a primarily decorative feature. Any shelf in the house should be twice that thickness if not more. MaCenna added trim piece to make her bookcase shelves appear thicker. Turned out great.
@@tracygarrett3952 100% agree
Short answer is we don’t know if your wrong. Let’s see what stove Drew puts in. I have positive aspirations. I can’t say the same for the comment section. Lol
Really nice job... My only concern is the grease build up on that shelf? That is the only drawback of having open shelving in a kitchen
Exactly
Its lovely vent hood! A bit too high for my preference, but to each their own - as long as its up to code. I do think you will regret not building in a way to access the vent.
👆👆👆Congratulations 🎁 🎉 You’ve been selected to receive GIVEAWAY PACKAGE 📦 Text me 👆👆👆to receive prizes 💝 Thanks for watching🤝..
Yes. Hood vents need to be at a certain height to actually work correctly. And also vents need to be cleaned so need easy access but, by that time he will have money built up again to afford a new one instead of cleaning this.
Drew dancing to the sound of the hood vent is everything the world needs and more! 😂❤
Love all the curves. They reflect the arched doorways beautifully.
It looks cute and unique! I would personally have wanted the hood to have a lip so you do not see the steel /metal part of the vent. Also in my experience, as many others also wonder about, these things need maintenance so this design does not allow for easy access to repair/change of lamp etc. And lastly I wish I could have had access to these vlogs when I was young, but unfortunately internet did not even exist at that time, believe it or not. Keep up the good work, many of us learn and get inspired by your fearless approach to new challenges. I follow McCenna too, fun that you are friends! Love from Sweden❤️
Check your local code rules for the recommended distance from the stove to the hood....... or check to see what your stove/oven recommends. It's pretty though
When you revealed, I exclaimed outwardly... ' wow, that's beautiful'
Its truly stunning!
A vent needs to be sized and located a specific distance from the stove top to be up to code. It looks quite small. I found this out the hard way when I purchased at larger 36” gas range. They had to upsize my vent size.
I was thinking the shelf is blocking half of the fan and is much too high from where the stove top will be to be effective.
@@pattir8616 this drove me nuts 😭
Same! I want to love this but between reducing the vent to 4" (which is too small for most hoods), not to mention gas usually needs a 600cfm fan and the shelf/height making the vent basically useless... I can't. Looks aren't everything, especially in kitchens!
My stove doesn't even have a vent. Not even a microwave with a fan over top. Just cabinet.
30" above the range if it's electric and 36" over gas... that is a building code requirement and also a requirement from every manufacturer as a vent has limited suction power...when too high it can not do it's job properly!!!
There's always a point where I remember to hit the "Like" button...and today it was you dancing in front of your newly framed & mounted hood vent that did it 😂 love you so much, and love seeing your home progress! The range hood turned out beautifully!
In general, most installations require a distance from 20" to 24" between the bottom of the hood and the cooking surface. Over a gas range, this distance should be between 24" and 30", unless otherwise specified.
If the range hood is mounted too high above the recommended height, it won't be able to extract away the fumes. That means you'll have to clean the range hood, your cooktop, countertops, and cabinets more often. In other words, your range hood won't function as it's supposed to.
20"-24" is too low. It's 30"-36" above the cooking surface.
I love the look, but had the same concern. There's also an issue with a plug in an inaccessible concealed space. It would have been better to hardwire in a safe jbox. Though it's not likely to happen, a plug can fault, spark, etc. and therefore should have some sort of access panel. I don't know residential code that well but that's not allowed at least in a commercial space.
@@sharonluvisi6069 If you have an electric cooktop, range hoods should typically be 20-24 inches above the heat source. For gas cooktops, your range hood should be around 24-30 inches above the stove.
yeah, looks high and that marble shelf is blocking the way. Also with moisture and heat, can't help but think there are going to be a lot of cracks in that plaster.
🧐🧐Once the stove is installed, no-one under 6’ 5” is going to be able to reach the buttons/switches on the hood. Everyone will have to step on a stool to reach them.
The hood feature is awesome. Since your house is Spanish style it fits so well. Congratulations.
Drew! Wow! It’s beautiful!!
I’m amazed at your fearlessness in doing these projects.
Your kitchen could be on a magazine cover! Love it!
I wonder what the height of the space is between the surface of the range and the bottom of the range hood. It's not supposed to be more than 36 inches.
I know this because we just replaced an over-the-range microwave with a proper range hood in our house we just bought.
Lol! I love you drew, that dance when you turned it on, was a dance we alllllll made after realizing IT WORKS!
I love watching you you don’t clickbait like others you get things done and don’t ramble all throughout the video your style is impeccable
I GASPED when you showed the final look, WOW drew!!! I am such a fan! I love how unique it is!
I didn’t notice if anyone asked but how far out past the shelf does the vent sit? I only asked cause I was trying to figure out if it covered the venting area. Love how the house is coming along. Keep it up. ❤
Strong vent
For the detailing around the hood vents, get a piping bag used for frosting. With a small tip, pipe the plaster like caulk.
I love how you had to style the space so we could all see your vision even while it was still drying and in need of another coat. It is so much fun to find someone who thinks like I do about making things beautiful!
You did a great job with the extraction fan cover. I love that you always sound so humble, you haven't let your success go to your head.
Totally agree, Drew you’re a sweetheart!
You are so good Drew. I often start out thinking I don't like what you are doing, but...by the time you get done, I absolutely love it.
Your creativity is boundless
Who's a clever boy. Drew is. OMG it looks fabulous Drew. 👍😀👍
Hi, Drew the range hood turned out amazing and the style goes well with your home, you're very creative and you're not afraid of trying new things, however I think you should lower the range hood to where your marble backsplash end, It will funtion, flow and look aesthetically better. That means sacrificing the marble shelf.
I’m impressed. I’ve renovated several homes and would never have the nerve to try what you did. Well done and conceived!
Very cool, although I would try to recess the insert a little by adding a second frame to the bottom. Because the hood is so short, the insert really stands out.
I think it looks stunning! If I had the patience I think I might actually be able to do this. One word of caution though, it's a good idea to check local ordinances cause many don't allow wood to be used above a stove unless it meets minimum allowances, meaning it must be more than so many inches above a heat source otherwise it presents a fire hazard. Just be careful. Great job! Love it!
“It’s giving ventilation” made my whole holiday season ❤
It looks utterly fabulous! I love it. The only thing I would change would be to recess the hood liner into the bottom of the hood cover. You had the space inside to mount it higher, then you wouldn't be able to see the stainless so readily when standing on the ground (because the edge would have a longer lip on it). That said, it still looks wonderful and it's always easier tossing out what if's from my chair. Your home is going to be stunning when you're finished!!
Looked so simple when you demonstrated, yet, phenomenal in appearance and appeal. You are truly gifted!😊
The stove hood is stunning.
I am impressed with your skills and certainly appreciate how hard you work. Design education for fashion is apparently more useful in construction than I would have expected. Though my husband is a retired residential builder, and of course after all those years I have a lot of experience in home design and construction, I am glad to say that I still learn from you! I have really enjoyed watching you make your new home beautiful.
It looks great but I am slightly confused about whether the ledge will interfere with performance of the extraction fan. From the angle it looks like the ledge blocks it.
My parents have a hood vent like that, it is so strong that it sucks the piliot light out, so maybe the ledge will help so he can actually use it, smoke does rise, so it will go around the shelf.
"I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm going to make it work!"........😆
We love you Drew! You are the best!
😄🏠🎄
Great ideas, thank you Drew! I am a lady that does a lot of maintenance work around my house myself but have always been daunted about woodwork. Well this video showed me that step by step one can create basic items from wood! ❤❤
You always do beautiful things and create beautiful design, but sometimes you seriously blow my mind and anyone else out of the water! This is one of those times, this is amazing 😍 There is no one like you Drew!!
It’s beautiful! I absolutely love it and what a feeling of warmth it gives off. It actually feels like you’re in Italy! And is there nothing better then when you can say you made it yourself? Way to go Drew!
-central Wisconsin: Drew, you never mentioned when you were securing the bracket that will hold the fan hood, or when you were screwing any of that hood frame into the wall or ceiling, that you were screwing into studs. I hope you were vs drywall. I just thought I’d mention it, so in future videos, you can remind people to be sure to screw into studs. as for newbies doing at-home renovations, this could be a valuable piece of information/reminder.
Range hood is perfect. Your kitchen is gorgeous
As beautiful as it looks, I am concerned about two things in this design:
1. How would you access the hood in case of a need of repair?
2. The shelf running all the way across the width could be a slight barrier between the range and the hood.
I love your design, but I shutter to think about the vent hood going out and needing to be replaced at some point. 😳
I was thinking the same thing!
I'm going to build a hood for the range I've never done this before😯 . I'm going to drill into the marble it took like 1 hour for one hole😞 . I love how you so adventurous with transforming your space! Diving right in...no fear...10 toes deep and making it your own.🥰🥰🥰
Drew, I have never seen a man dance like that after installing a hood range and I am so glad that I have! Big fan! You’re the best and just doing you and I love it, just as I imagine so many of us do!
Thank you for being you!!!!
Drew the range is perfect! Once you styled it, it looked absolutely beautiful...you're a clever cookie 😃
This is remarkable! Well done Drew AND Justin. What a great team, this came out SO nice!
Justin is the best!! Such a great help :)
I really like your 'hanging the hood' little dance. A 'stunning' hood cover indeed! You are a genius for sure! You and Macenna are my 'go-to's' when I need inspirational DIY ideas. There are no others on YT that interest me like you two do.
This has turned out such a gorgeous , look....for your kitchen ..you,ve done so well Drew...love.it.🙂...Always such clean ...professional finish to everything you do..Bet your so pleased with it..👍👍👍
Very nice. My only concern is - what if the hood goes out? Do you have a plan on how to get it out of its cage? I would so hate to see any damage to your hood covering. Truely enjoyed watching.
All the way from Australia here…Drew this is beyond impressive! Long time watcher, first time commenter but I HAD to chime in here because this is truly inspiring. I genuinely love watching your creative process and would love for you to share some more details of your planning process and where you are drawing your inspiration and influences. I’m so happy for your success, you could not be more deserving. Absolutely stunning!
Yes, yes, yes…..vent hood looks great…….the whole area looks so inviting. Love a traditional kitchen with lots of character……and DREW, YOU NAILED IT…..
.
This so inspires me. I’m 70 years old and now live in an apartment. There is not much I am allowed to change,so I find it frustrating as well. I just have to use my creativity in other ways. The decorating I can do. Thank you for your videos.
Well done Drew! I love that you go into these projects (some with no experience) and work through step by step and create functional, beautiful design. You also draw on your past fashion design concepts/skills and adapt to your interior design. You are inspirational.
Drew, you are so creative! I would have never have thought of this design but it is PERFECTION!
interesting and creative idea. I believe you can also use drywall instead of the poly board. I heard u say that the reason was because poly board is more flexible but drywall can also be made into curves by scoring it and the plastering to perfect rounded pieces. Unless of course there was another reason for your choice, then I would LOVE to know. I think this is an amazing idea. I've contemplated ways to update my mom's range hood without spending thousands for one of those industrial sized ones. Strongly considering this as an option. Many great ideas! Thank u for being bold enough to go for them 🤗🤗
For the record, the person who said the shelf below the hood would obstruct the air flow from the range up to the hood is likely wrong. What I will say is that the thing about the shelves in all the kitchen is that they might collect dust and grease if someone is cooking with it. The underside of the shelf over the range may need additional cleaning for that reason. Please, just let Drew live his dream ❤ 0:03
I don't like that round thing, I guess I don't like art deco so that may be the reason, it doesn't go with the style of your house IMO. First time I don't really like one of your ideas but kudos to you for the hard work.
OH EM GEEEE... It's styled so GORGEOUSLY. I'm in LOVE with your kitchen. I can't wait until it's finished. ❤
I'm so proud of you doing all these things you haven't done before. You are amazing. Think of all the people you are helping. So many would not be able to afford this upscale design. You not only show them how to do it. You let them know that they can use items they pickb up along the road and place them in their homes without shame. For me, growing up so poor and doing a lot with a little was important. You make the world brighter.
Blown away!! Such a cool design
OMG, you did an amazing job on the vent hood!!! The styling is chefs kiss🙂
OMG Drew. This is so beautiful. It is truly a piece of kitchen art.♥️♥️♥️
What came to mind is rustic, love it. Can't wait to see the stove.
Drew I totally forgot what a great carpenter you are. It all looks amazing.
I fall in love with your style with each video! How insanely beautiful is this kitchen?! Wow.
You are so unbelievable handy and creative, it blows my mind 👏🏼
I like the design very much. I am a cook and can comment that I think from a practical perspective you might regret that you put the hood so high up from the stove top. Unless you brought a industrial strength model it may not suck the smoke as efficiently so high up. Also looks difficult to reach the controls from that height. Also FYI the hoods are notorious for leaking grease onto the surface so you may end up with oil/grease drops on the shelf, so be aware of that when you put things on the shelves under the hood. The screens need to be cleaned at least once a week to help prevent this problem,it looks like you purchased the kind that can go thru the dishwashing cycle which makes cleanup easier. I set myself a calendar reminder to do this so oil does not build up. Hopefully you not have any issues with yours, but taking that out to replace may cause you a headache in the future. You are a homeowner now and looking at long term maintenance is something you need to consider in your design options. I had so many issues with my oven fan that I ended up with 2 different models to get on that actually worked over the long term. Was extremely disappointing as I bought a real high end product.
Thank you, Lone Fox. Excellent breakdown of what seemed extremely complicated.
Wow... That entire area looks stunning. Love, love, love it!!!! So much inspiration for a kitchen renovation that's planned for next summer. ❤
If the fan stops working at any point, how will it be taken out to be serviced? Will the entire structure need to be torn out?
Dream Kitchen!! You hit it out of the park again Drew! Never knew you coukd do this with an oven fan.
This is great for a designer who doesn't cook much. But if you love to cook the hood is not enough to do the job. It should be lower and farther out from the wall so it is right over the burners. That shelf and the pots would soon be covered with grease from cooking. And the plaster finish would be so hard to clean. But, as I said, it's fine for Drew and his lifestyle.
Oh my word you should be SOOO proud! It truly looks amazing, great job!!
Love the shape of the vent hood!
I’m a bit confused though how the marble shelf between the vent and stove top will work. Won’t it interfere with the ‘updraft’ from the vent hood? Won’t the marble and anything on the shelf, get coated in moisture, grease etc from the stove top when the vent hood is on?
Maybe the kitchen is just for looks. Don’t know how much cooking he does.
Drew,Drew,Drew look at what you can do, this is gorgeous and I absolutely love it..🥰
🥳🌈🌟 plaster master Drew 🤩 if I had your talent I would make plastered build-in shelfs in my bathroom.... maybe I will do it 😊 because your channel is so motivating and encouraging- thank you so much 🤗💚
I was so bored thank you for uploading 😭❤
I'm really impressed with this, Drew. It's amazing. Perfect choice. Well executed. I really love this with the arches and plaster. Perfection.
stunning- looks like it was always there and so natural
When you were doing the skeleton with wood I loved it that way, it reminded me the table and your living room furniture, but I have to admit that it’s looking good the way you built it! 😉
🇨🇦I wish I was there when you were building this…I would have suggested that you insulate the vent hood to dampen the fan/motor noise! Still watching from Victoria BC. ❤️🇨🇦
It looks so gorgeous 😭! Im absolutely loving seeing it all together!
You never cease to amaze me with your enthusiasm and “I have an idea and we will figure it out” attitude. Kudos to you!
Oh honey you worked so hard! Congratulations!
