- THE AUDIO ON THIS UA-cam VIDEO SOMEHOW GOT DISTORTED. YOU CAN HEAR AN UNDISTORTED VERSION AT: www.third-story...
There are times when the right song reaches us at the right time. Sometimes it’s a brand new song. Sometimes it’s a classic. Sometimes it’s something you’ve heard a hundred times before but the stars align just right, and you hear it with fresh ears. Other times, it’s like a bolt of lightning out of nowhere. During these recent Covid months, the song “Things” by Louis Cole has been one of those for me that just makes sense.
Louis is a prolific multi instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, arranger, video maker, surrealist, funk monkey, producer and personality. Despite his extensive output as a solo artist, with his band Knower, and as a guest with others, he is slightly reclusive and still somewhat of a mystery.
After more than three years of attempting to set this up, Louis and I spoke recently to talk about where he came from, what he’s doing now, and where he hopes to go. Along the way he touched on writing “nostalgic music that feels almost like a memory of something that never happened”, overcoming fear, being a better person, staying up late into the weird part of the night, “insanity music”, money, honesty, humor, the problem with 100bpm, UA-camPoops, and what Nate Wood, David Binney, Bob Mintzer, and Jack Conte have to do with any of this.

Couldn't get him to cop to Clown Core. Great interview.
Clown Core is Terry Bozzio & Kenny G. No involvement from Louis Cole.
@@codyreidfilms He's right, but it's Bozzio on the sax.
@@codyreidfilms yep sadly
Louis Cole is a great song writer, besides a phenomenal drummer and keyboardist, 'Things' is a great tune, but so are 'Thinking', 'Freaky Times', 'Bank Account', the still unreleased 'Mean It'. And his latest release, 2022's 'Quality Over Opinion', is awesome and features so many stylistically diverse and awesome moments...
Also love the work he and Genevieve Artadi do in KNOWER. Their music is influenced by the other artist you mention, but I also say its much more harmonically and rhythmically sophisticated than either.
Louis Cole's music is grossly underrated and should have a much wider recognition.
Let me tell u, Louis Cole can do no wrong!
Totally agree.@@ericdreizen1463
His song "Below the valleys" is really great too
@@roromoho Only recently - the last year - did I get Louis firsts two albums, and Album 2 is really great and 'Below the Valley' is amazing, in fact the whole record has a dreamy vibe, 'Grains Of Sand', 'You'll Believe Me' (w/ that total Beach Boys vibe), as well as 'Your Moon', 'Clouds' and 'V' are really special.
This dude is clowning around here
This interview answered a lot of questions i had about Louis Cole, very interesting
Louis is a legendary artist and hearing how much of an influence UA-cam poop was to him is amazing because me and my friends quote different ones all the time
I recently graduated first-class honours from a top journalism school, and let me tell you, this ranks amongst the best interviews I've seen in years. Your channel deserves SO much more.
Thank you Mike! It's high praise from a journalism major. I am not really doing much with the channel, I know I could do more! The episodes are also available in the regular podcast channels (Spotify, Apple Podcasts, etc.) but the UA-cam channel is not really getting the attention it needs.
I'm so glad you found it and that you liked it! Leo
Leo honors louis' sound, puts distortion on the master track
No idea why it's so distorted on UA-cam. You can hear it cleaner at www.third-story.com/listen/louiscole
@@thethirdstorypodcastwithle8084 Don’t worry, it’s actually a pretty hip observation and after I read his comment I dug the interview again on another subtle level….
goddamnit! why did i find this at midnight. i should sleep!!!
This was a fantastically odd interview editing-wise, it's great!
Great interview. I'm also a massive fan of LC. I was always skeptical whether or not he was behind Clown Core, but after hearing this interview I am pretty sure it is him. This is the second interview I've heard him say "I've never heard of clown core". At 1:01:30 - he talks about how "some of the things" he strategically releases once a week. That's how Clown Core released their album Van, just a couple months before this interview. I'm convinced. Also, the references to hot dogs and corn dogs between Knower and CC, the musical similarities. I could go on and on. I'm convinced. Mind blown.
You pick Louis Cole? Out of all the painfully thin drummers that are also funky bass synth playing, video incorporated into the music making, boundary pushing musicians out there? Could be anybody. And it certainly isn't Sam Gendel as the other cohort. Lots of dudes blow like Charlie Parker and hang out with aforementioned drummer/funky bass synth playing types...
Clown Core is Terry Bozzio and Kenny G. No involvement from Louis Cole.
Louis Cole and Sam Gendel(sax/keyboard) are Clown Core.
If you know you know
Just listen the drums and how they are played in Clown Core...it's obvious it's him, nobody play like this but him
Nice in-depth interview. Louis is such a cool guy. It is just nice to hear him talk. I feel like I kind of know him after this great lengthy conversation.
Great interview! Loved the editing references to his aesthetic. What an inspiration!!
Fantastic interview. Wish you asked him more about his approach to bass but you definitely earned a new subscription from me and I’m sending this to all my friends, excellent work
Great interview thanks !
Love this!!!!!!!!!
I love this interview.
Learned a lot from this interview! Good stuff man
Great interview. Will seek out more in the series for sure.
Lovely interview, as always!
Wow subbed, I have so many Ben Sidran interviews, and am totally happy to now connect with you, Leo.
"pretty killing drummer" - understatement of the century.
I think Louis has part of his brain in his appendages like an octopus has. This would explain a lot.
thrift store vibe….its an amazing thing
Clown Core 🎷
I saw Clown Core filming at a Der Wienerschnitzel in Highland Park and it was Terry Bozzio and Kenny G who got in and out of blue van wearing the jumpsuits. No Louis Cole involvement.
@@codyreidfilms please stop spreading such misinformation this is highly dangerous for our children 😢
Yeah Tim Dillon and Andrew Schultz shout outs !!!
Your audio mixing is a bit off and is a bit uncomfortable to listen to, unfortunately. Interesting interview though :)
It's strange that it's distorted here because it's not on the original podcast that was uploaded to youtube. Anyway feel free to listen to an undistorted version at: www.third-story.com/listen/louiscole
@@thethirdstorypodcastwithle8084 no thanks. If you can't make it sound good here, why would I click anywhere else?
@@Nannada1212 So that you could listen to it undistorted.
@@Nannada1212 haters get rekt
Epic musician, terrible liar about Clown Core 🤣
The mic is clipping a bit.
It's something in the youtube upload. Not sure why. You can hear it undistorted here: www.third-story.com/listen/louiscole
Nice interview. Turn your gat dang microphone down.
The audio on this video somehow got distorted. You can hear an undistorted version at: www.third-story.com/listen/louiscole
Tim Dillion is the best
When does the interview happen?
October 2020
There's a low frequency spike on your microphone that is just disgusting to listen to.
Maybe move a little off the diaphragm or run a high-pass filter on the mix?
