I want to reiterate what others have said though, the core problem is likely that the drain tube to the water pan is clogged. That's what it was for me. First go through the steps in this video to clear out the ice. Then remove the lower panel on the back and find the drain tube: facing the back of the fridge it's at the lower right, a little plastic tube zap-strapped in place. Cut the straps, pull it out, clear out the gunk with a pipe cleaner, strap it back in.
Thank you! I am a 66 year old retired women who had confidence in doing this myself after watching your video. I have the LG model LMX25984SW /00. It has 2 freezer drawers so there is a component going horizontally across the middle of the freezer. I didn't have the right size torx screwdriver to remove it so it made it a little cumbersome working around it. In addition to what your model required, I removed both plastic brackets on the top and the bottom left with a phillips head screwdriver to allow more room to remove the back panel. My crochet hook worked for removing the back panel. I was able to follow the rest of your directions to repair mine successfully. I am very appreciative.

Another thanks to you! I used the video to diagnose the issue, sure enough, that's what it was. Just followed the steps and it's fixed. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. The one tool I didn't have was the tiny hook. I thought I could use something else. After that didn't work, I ran to Harbor Freight for a $2 set and it came out, just like the video.
This is perfect--this is exactly what happened to our LG fridge--following a tip from another of your videos I added a little copper wire to extend the effect of the heater after I unblocked the tube, taking care that it did not contact any plastic. It was nice to be able to see such good visuals of the dismantling, as I'm always anxious about taking these kinds of things apart for fear of breaking a tab. Also, if you don't have the actual tool, those free paint keys you get at the hardware store when you buy a gallon of paint are perfect for getting the back panel off.....Thanks for such a helpful set of videos.

Thanks for the very helpful video Scott. Following your instructive video, I was able to take care of this ice buildup in our 5-year-old LGLFX28968ST fridge. I would like to stress the importance of having a curved little pick tool to remove that back panel. I couldn't remove it with other tools. I found a set of small pick tools like that at Harbor Freight for $2. The repair probably took just over an hour, but figure 2-3 hours when you add in taking out all your frozen food and cleaning the freezer bins. Several times over the past few months we'd find small pools of water on the floor and discovered that many layers of ice had built up on the floor of the freezer. This made it hard to pull out and then reclose the freezer drawer, and chipping out all the ice was awkward, cold, messy and inconvenient. Thanks to your help, I'm hoping we've solved this problem for good.

Thanks for the video. It helped to see the configuration of the bottom freezer design because we just bought one for the first time in 2015 - an LG LFXS24623S. Without your video I wouldn't have seen how it all goes together down behind the freezer bin.
I thought this was our problem because my wife packs the fridge top-to-bottom wall-to-wall and we had a full house for over 2 months. When she told me she was seeing water on the freezer door under the icemaker, I also noticed that the freezer was not very cold. My first thought was that there must be an ice build-up somewhere, but I couldn't find any signs of ice. As near as I can tell, the fridge just stopped circulating air - cold or otherwise - altogether and everything started warming up over a 24-36 hour period without any other symptoms we were aware of. The compressor sounded normal until we plugged it back in after unplugging it for a couple hours. Now it just runs quietly like there's no demand on it. Still no air circulating, so hopefully the problem is as simple as the fan stopped working and the refrigerant simply froze up without doing further damage.
Perhaps 5 years is about as much as we can expect from big appliances these days, but I appreciate you showing how to get to some things.

Thank you so much!!! I was able to do the whole thing in 45 minutes, and I am not a handyman at all. Hence, probably why I burned myself on that metal bar above the ice a few times. I also really like your way of sliding the door out. That is MUCH better than the way it’s shown in the manual!

Oh my gosh! Thank you!!!!! This worked perfectly for me! The only tool I had to run out the hardware store for was a Drain Weasel hair clog tool (no affiliation). I was able to get it in and I could feel where the blockage was. Pushed through it and heard all the water drain out!

Terrific video. Was exactly what the issue was. As a suggestion, I used a blow dryer to get the ice melting in the trough - made it easy to break onto large chunks and to get it happening faster. I them used hot water for the drain hole like the video.
Loved the idea of adding the small copper wire to help heat transfer.

Hi Scott. So, your video was awesome and helped me fix our leaking problem. Don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner. Lol After putting everything back together, the freezer door no longer registers as being open on the fridge door. The temperature is fine, but what would I have done wrong?

Thank you!!!! That was fun ... Probably broke every connector tab and had to unbend many a condenser coils. 😂 And thank you to the person suggesting the paint can opener! I used a 3d printed part for my shop vac that has a really narrow opening to remove the water from underneath coils as the ice melted.

Thanks so much. This saved me. I had no idea why water was coming out until I saw this video. Cleared the ice with a hair dryer (takes some patience to clear all the ice) and then used a squirt bottle filled with boiled water to clear the drain. Hopefully this fixes it for a while.

Before you do this, try removing the 3 screws holding the rear compressor area panel, and check the two drip lines for blocked check-valves. One of mine was clogged with the jelly mold that grows anytime cool water constantly drips. I cut the zip ties to remove them, and after cleaning them, the interior flooding stopped. I knew the blockage was the problem because when I touched one of the lines, water began pouring out of the top of the tube where it connects.
I cleaned the check valves and the drip pan as best I could then added a little bleach to the water which killed the mold/scum that was forming on the bottom of the drip tray.
Meant to mention where I live is humid and the liquid in the drip tray often fails to completely evaporate.

THIS! I have done the hot water thing once a year for two years. I revisited this to do it again and found this comment and this likely was it the whole time. Was very eww and bone dry but now clean and free-flowing. Thank you!

@@piclezwd very back of unit, bottom right corner if you are looking from behind. I followed this exactly and have not had a freeze/leak since. I had to cut off the old zip ties to clean it, vacuumed out the debris from the pan with my shop vac. Added a little TSP/bleach mixture to the pan to keep it clean. Replaced the hose with new zip ties. Et voila.
I'm really glad I found this tip as well. I have an LFC23760ST, so my interior is a little different and seemingly difficult to fully detach because of an ice maker. I initially cleaned out the drip tray in the back, but I didn't realize the entire thing was clogged with debris. I cut the zip ties, cleared out the rest of the debris, reattached new zip ties and presto, no leaks again. I did defrost the freezer portion for a couple of hours, just in case there was buildup, but things seem to be in good shape now.
My LG freezer refrigerator is doing the same thing going to tackle at this weekend thank you for the video

This is actually a pretty good refrigerator with a minor flaw that can be easily repaired.... Just need to watch the video step by step.... I did this fix in the past 5 years and it worked, don't be in a rush and damage the plastic.... I used a heat gun to speed up the process once I encountered a big block of ice behind the back panel, just keep yourself from melting any plastic.. I'm getting ready to do this again because I know it works... Great video!

Thank you so much for uploading. I had same issues. I took out ice on the bottom of the freezer many times but it came back and I found dripping water on the floor. My refrigerator model (LFXS 29766S/01) is a little bit different. I could not open evaporator, so I used small hose

A hair dryer works also. But the cause of the problem is a drain tube clogged up with debris. You will need to take off the rear lower panel. remove the the nylon ties securing the tube to the evaporator, remove the tube, remove the rubber flapper valve, and clean out all the debris at the end of the tube. Re-install the tube and secure with new nylon ties. That is what I had to do. If you don't clean out the tube the freeze up will only happen again.

my model is older - 2007/8 I think - LFX25 series (1st with LED lights - LG replaced my other 2006 model where the board failed and left the fridge light on that melted all the insulation and panelling in the top of the fridge! - but only after a lot of calls/emails). Drawers are a lot harder to get out (screws etc) and you have to take out both the freezer door rail runners and the left one for the upper tray from the sides of the freezer to get the back out. No wiring on the right side, just the left for the two fans. The coils - and thin aluminum drip tray guide - can be lifted up from their mount hook on the left making that part easier to get to the ice dams. Hopefully its fixed my leaking into the lower compartment then melting out the door onto the floor! Thanks pretty good video of how to do it.

Thanks Scott, that helped me out! Mine was just like the one you show. I also took the back panel off the rear of the fridge and cleaned out the drain tube as someone in the comments suggested. I found a sheet metal screw in the bottom of that drain tube sitting on the flapper (It was probably dropped in there during assembly). Also resting on the flapper were pieces of aluminum foil that had deteriorated, and misc. dust and dirt. That aluminum foil on the back of the panel with the fans on it was very thin and falling off the styrofoam piece so I removed all of it. In its place I used some of that HVAC foil tape that's about 1 1/2" wide. I used 3 strips of that and it's better than new. Thanks again!

Which back panel did you take off to reach the drain tube to clear it of junk?? Did that fix the issue without having to take the drawers out?
@@XX-166 There is a small metal back panel on the rear of the fridge. You will see the tube, it drains into a plastic tray, it will probably be full of water. I had to clip 2 cable ties to remove the drain tube and clean it, and I cleaned out the tray also. Make sure you replace the cable ties so the drain tube doesn't fall off into the tray. You have to pull the fridge out from the wall to get behind it and remove the panel. This is in addition to the panel inside the fridge behind the drawers that Scott shows in his video. Yes, you could try to clear the drain tube first and see if that will take care of the problem. There may be ice in the upper part of the inside metal tray and tube that will block the drainage until it is all thawed.
@@rustybanjo96 i also read that a person here contacted LG and they said to put the freezer on Zero and that should correct the problem without all the disassembly. I’m gonna try that first and allow the freezer to reach that level since I had it on 6-8 below initially. If that doesn’t work then I’m heading to the back of the refrigerator next and focus on that tube in hopes that it’s blocked and my compressed air can will be ready.
@@XX-166 Good luck with the Zero trick, it will be nice if that works, I would try it for sure. I had this thought after I fixed mine - If I had the time, and a place to put all of the food in the fridge, it would be easy to just clean the tube on the back of the fridge and then unplug it and leave it for a day with the doors open an let it thaw out on it's own without removing any of the inside panels. It's that inside frozen metal tray full of ice that is really the blockage once the tube is cleared.

Thx for this video. I knew the issue but wasn't confident enough to take the back panel off without breaking it.
This would not be that common of a problem.. except people keep buying Fridges from electronics companies. Unfortunately mine came with the house. Quick tip, buy fridges from companies who do it for a century, like whirlpool. This is a giant pain in the A, and btw, the ice dispenser on this thing is a POS too.
I just saw your video and I see the water leaking from that exactly spot and I already had to remove twice the build up frozen ice. I'm getting ready to make this repair on the next weeks, great video.

Awesome, the same exact refrigerator will attempt this today after stepping in a puddle of water on the floor, after watching your video I did the fix but I took it one step further and pulled the fridge away from the wall and removed the lower cover where the fan and drain pan sit, well low and behold the drain line has this little flapper on it, it was so plugged with dirt that there was no way water would drain, even the water pan was disgusting and the fan looked like it went through an apocalypse with large amounts of what looks like anything that went under the fridge. Thanks again for the video, you helped me save a lot of time and money.

@@XX-166 I did exactly what was shown on the video but went one step further,like I said, I pulled refrigerator away from the wall and removed the bottom back cover which gave me access too the drain line that use to be frozen, I then proceeded to clean the dust and dirt out of it so it wouldn’t plug again.
@@neilmac1023 I also started with the back removal and the cleaning of the drain tube which was full of garbage and the drain pan was dry. I’m waiting to see how this works long term along with lowering the freezer to zero instead of the 5-6 below I had it at before I head to taking the back off the interior and breaking out the hair dryer to that cooler and thaw that drain tube out.

Had same problem. Repair tech out today, he immediately took a panel off the back side exterior and accessed the drain tube. Pulled it off and it was clogged with dust. Bad design because the end of the tube has a rubber flapper and is right next a small fan open to the floor. He said 9 times out of 10 that is the problem.

What a weird design.
So what was the fix?
Use one gallon sprayer to spray hot water and use 3 gallon wet/dry vacuum to remove water, you can finish the job much faster even if you got complete frozen evaporator.

Scott, what causes my evaporator line to keep freezing, right at the wall where the condenser copper line comes in? My evaporator coils aren't frozen, just right at the beginning where copper line connects to evaporator coil lines?
Where would the water run in good operational conditions .is there a catch can that should be emptied didn't see that on ur video

Hey Scott! Thanks for the video. Helped out a bunch and saved me a ton of money especially now during this funky time. Question...is this a one-time fix or would something like this happen again?
One time. There is a heater tab you can put down the drain to help keep clear.
Great video, Scott. Did you wrap a bare copper wire around the heating element then the snake down the drain plug to prevent further freeze-up occurrences? If so, any suggestions on length or wire gage?
I think it was10 gauge wire.

Thank you. Worked perfectly. But i had another problem that probably cause de freeze up clog. My drain tube in the evaporator was clogged with lint and dirt, because of that the water could not drain.
How did you access that? The lower rear panel on the back of the fridge?
I could not see where that drain was from the back after I removed the sheet metal panel on the back of the fridge.

Worked perfectly for me, thank you so much. Had some black gunk buildup behind the panel which was a little troubling. Anyone know what it could be? Coolant leak?

This is a great video. Door removal everything was great. I have a Kenmore 795.73139.410 - this has been leaking for a while. Kept removing the ice and cleaned out coils and stuff in the back. Kept reoccurring. I just got done ( I did add a aluminum strip off of the heating bar and put it down the drain tube.) had some old aluminum from left over gutter stuff. I remember having to do this about 30 years ago on an old refrigerator with freezer in the top. Hope this fixes it. Thank Q for the great video.

Very helpful video thanks. I am having exactly this issue right now. I'm curious, barring a physical blockage in the drain line, couldn't you just turn off the unit for a day and let the ice melt and drain and just power it back up?

First, clear or replace the clear corrugated plastic drain on the back of the fridge.
Make sure to use zip ties when reinstalling it so that the black rubber flapper on the end of the tube does not sit on the bottom of the drain pan restricting or preventing flow.
If you clear that tube and the end flapper, the heating element should thaw the frost and allow it to flow.

I think my LG fridge model # LMWS27626S which is only 1.5 years old has the same issue. We had a repairman come out since it's under warranty and discovered the drain tube in back was not fastened in properly, so that might have prevented proper draining. He put the tube back in place and cleaned up dust from that area. He recommended that we empty the refrigerator & freezer and just let the ice thaw for 24 hours. Would that be just as effective?
Great video. I don't have the dental tool you were using to get the back panel off so i've got two space heaters in there hoping to melt the ice.

I even bought a pdf of the service manual (pretty worthless). But I have one more question (we’ll, two) about getting that back panel off. What kind of tool is that your using? And… how hard are you pulling to “unlatch” it?
By the way, I’ve already cleared a clog at the end of the drip tube at the refrigerator rear panel, up that didn’t seem to help…but at least it’s cleared for the next step!
That’s a automotive pick tool with a 90 degree bend.
You can get them at the hardware store or auto parts store . Takes a far amount of force.
