Right? He can paint with both hands with two separate things at the same time, he can dodge lasers, and other stuff...but dancing is too much. Also he fails to dodge a silly little arrow later on.
When the programmed holodeck dancer turns around and Data is making that creepy dumb smile..... kills me every time. 🤣🤣 One of the very best TNG episodes and really gives insight into how confusing and strange every single day is for poor Data.
Usually I worry about there being gaps between clips, but this had quite the overlap instead! Eh, no biggie... 1:09 It ain't just your feet he's watching, if you catch my drift. 2:46 Is it just me, or does Data's holographic dance partner bear some resemblance to a certain deceased security officer with whom he had had a romantic dalliance? That would explain why he's smiling like that...
@@artman2oo3 I was just thinking of times when Worf helping him up off the ground, and what not!!! Plus, it'd seem more advanced if an android was about the same weight as a human, rather than Robocop-like, I think!!!!!
Capable of simultaneously running 6 billion functions at once, and _this_ is a very complex set of variables to coordinate simultaneously. Whoever says Data is the least human of this crew needs to see his very relatable emotions here.
dancing is simply movement mirroring, smiling involves physical manipulation as well as emotional understanding behind said manipulation to fully and successfully mimic. for someone like data who has a difficult time with human emotions, i can see why a smile might be more difficult for him to master.
In some alternate universe somewhere, Data and the Terminator are out there dancing together, each with their own scary mechanical smiles in perfect bliss lol
I sometimes have that very same smile after eating a bunch of beans. Mind you, I'm not actually enjoying myself when that happens. And I'm definitely NOT dancing. (Unless you count doing the green apple quick step.)
I always loved how Brent spiner imitates human expression and emotions such as laughing and smiling. It always makes me lol. In effect illiciting the emotion he's imitating from me.
Perhaps Data should consult the ship's computer for more insight on human behaviour. It has clearly learnt a lot through its rendition of holodeck programmes, as I note that when Data conjured up a holographic dance partner, not only did the ship's computer do so, but it was aware of the standard human desire to dial up the sexiness involved and complied. Even to the extent of reinterpreting the mood of the earlier music and jazzing it up with extra sexiness. Plus, the ship's computer regularly demonstrates almost psychic understanding of people's desires, as it only opens doors when people actually want to go through them and somehow always perfectly knows who you want to communicate with, via your communicator, even before you've said their name. Yet the communication remains in real-time, so it cannot simply be delaying transmission until the recipient of the communication is known. Basically, the ship's computer seems to have in-universe access the script somehow.
It's kinda like The Machine in Person of Interest. A general AI with a large sample can learn a lot by watching. And maybe some of the information is transferred from previous AIs.
Just something that all the other series don't enough of, episodes like this ground the character into relatability to the audience. It's just a means to an end, a task to accomplish a goal for Data to learn how to dance, at first, but then he realizes how dancing is really a "very complex set of variables to coordinate." Just shows how many of us, to varying degrees, have all had that same, or similar experience, knowledge and understanding how daunting it can sometimes be to gain mastery over a skill, data learning how to dance is such great metaphor for human experience. It makes him, an artificial lifeform, be so much more...human...
Data dancing and staring at his partners feet....basically me learning to dance only I'm also feeling super self conscious that they may think I'm looking down their shirt at their boobs rather than their feet.
Autistic people must love watching scenes like these with Data. "Look me in the eyes" and "smile" are easier said than done if you have difficulty processing and understanding these nuanced social cues.
as someone with asperger's, i love everything about data. he is by far the most relatable tv character i've ever seen. bones is a close second (bones in the first few seasons, anyway). benedict cumberbatch's sherlock is third. for me, personally. but yea, data is an autistic icon for sure.
This scene could have been a great opportunity to use Tasha's actor to portray as data's partner, showing his oddly deep for an android attachment to her.
It has to have been before at least janurary 7th 1991 and available to Viacom. I'm not a music person, but if you can get someone to tell you the BPM & key of the song, that'd help you get some results.
Is it just me, or does the holographic dance partner look a lot like Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar)? The actress is actually not credited, but she's similar to Crosby.
0:58 I've never danced, but surely she should've told him that if he's leading, he shouldn't be replicating, or imitating her performance????? I think she should've told him to look at it like the chain of command in starfleet, with how a lieutenant commander wouldn't look for direction from an ensign!!!!!!

That was some real "Otto the Autopilot" vibes.
I love how he immediately flips his hand positions to lead. That, along with his unnatural grin, are fantastic examples of his artificial nature.
That and the fact he gets that skanky dance partner are best parts of the scene.

Couldn't he have just downloaded a set of instructions for dancing? I can do that today on the Internet, without needing my own McFadden to teach me.

Would've been great if at the end, they'd shown Data at the wedding, dancing in a suit with the same smile on his face.
I thought they did in the wedding scene, but with the dress uniform.
His smile... Gets me every time, when I was 15 and now as a grown man.

More like Lore to me :)
The addition of an android and his unique perspective as a machine swimming in a sea of biologicals was masterful storytelling
The writers and director(s) did a great job with this episode!
