  • Watch live Stomatopods being prepared and eaten in Thailand, one female with eggs and one male.
    Called "sea locusts" by ancient Assyrians, "prawn killers" in Australia and now sometimes referred to as "thumb splitters" - because of the animal's ability to inflict painful gashes if handled incautiously - mantis shrimps sport powerful claws that are used to attack and kill prey by spearing, stunning, or dismembering. In captivity, some larger species can break through aquarium glass with a single strike.

      Hundreds of years, dude? I'm pretty sure that evolutionary time scales are slightly longer than that...Still and all, good point: all that adaptation and here comes a pair of scissors, and fini!
      On the other hand, there's the concept of coevolution to consider, the gradual symbiosis of species that might have started as Hunter and Hunted, or even parasitic (think human mitochondria--bacteria invading primitive hominids which then eventually end up playing a crucial role in the generation transmission of DNA, without which modern humans would not be modern humans.
      In the realm of more mutual symbiotic relationships, there's the classic story of humans and cannabis, each changing the other as they coevolve (part of the "stoned ape" hypothesis...)
      So maybe that's what we're seeing here--the alien shrimp are steadily becoming more human, while the humans are slowly getting a little buggier each generation...I think this might explain the weirdness, the insectile nature of some of the people you might meet on the subway...or in crowded urban areas, the human/cockroach hybrid.
      Bon appetit!

Right now that's not fully viable for most people, but why cause undue suffering if the alternative is as simple as an ice water bath and a sharp knife?

They taste like a sweet shrimp, s ort of like italian prawns. Personally i think the large head prawns in SE Asia are the best though, these are good for some dishes. Most mantis I ve seen though arent as complicated looking and are about the size of medium shrimp in the US.

    To everybody who say this is inhumane, it is actually the most humane way to kill them. According to Jennifer Mather a cephalopod expert, crustaceans, cephalopods, and mollusks don't have any internal temperature regulation, so if you freeze them you can get them to the point where they're really not conscious. This would be the quickest, easiest way to kill them with the most minimal pain.

    • @ava1789

    • @memeopsisspp1165
      @memeopsisspp1165 6 років тому +8

      Pet Zombie They WERE numbed so they didn't feel anything. The first cut killed them instantly; they cut the heart. The movement you see is just from nerves that are still intact firing off, causing the muscles to contract temporarily.

    • @Pitanga990
      @Pitanga990 6 років тому +1

      You are wrong. most humane way to kill them is 1 blow to their brain with the knifetip! instant death! not a slow death like this shit!

    • @memeopsisspp1165
      @memeopsisspp1165 6 років тому +6

      Tommy No, crustaceans don't have very centralized nervous systems so a cut to the brain won't kill it instantly. A cut to the heart, however, is an instant death. Google the anatomy of crustaceans. You will see that the heart is where chefs, including the ones in the video, usually cut.

    Mantis shrimp are pretty amazing creatures. They have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom with 16 different color cones in their eyes compared to our 3. They are ultra voracious shallow water predators and have been known to hunt In rivers. Sub-species with claws use them tl smash their prey so fast that they produce an underwater shockwave that stuns them even if the claw misses. The sub-species with spines strike as fast but spear their prey or human hands if in self defense earning them the nickname thumb splitters.
    They can live for decades and mate for life. So those two in the video could have been husband and wife.
