ALIEN SHRIMP Thailand Street Food

- Watch live Stomatopods being prepared and eaten in Thailand, one female with eggs and one male.
Called "sea locusts" by ancient Assyrians, "prawn killers" in Australia and now sometimes referred to as "thumb splitters" - because of the animal's ability to inflict painful gashes if handled incautiously - mantis shrimps sport powerful claws that are used to attack and kill prey by spearing, stunning, or dismembering. In captivity, some larger species can break through aquarium glass with a single strike.
To everyone who needs to know, this is a sea mantis and it may not have much meat but it is really nice.
I was thinking the claws resembled that of a preying mantis. Thank you for the info! I'd never seen one before
People who eat it says its very delicious but taste more like crab than shrimp
how bout u jump in that hot oil 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mantis shrimp
shrimp be like "we ride together, we fry together!"

It looks like a freaking centipede mixed with a lobster.
It's a Mantis shrimp according to google
@Zane Anthony it's won't split your finger but will make a cut.
Peter Parker AGREE
Same feel
I believe this is what is known as the Mantis shrimp
You hit the nail on the head
In my language it's called centipede shrimp.
@@nabilanaim5173 udang Lipan
I'm glad I seen your comment. Because the title says alien shrimp but, the shrimp looks like a praying mantis.
Thank you it's known as the mantis shrimp they talking about alien shrimp OMG 😳. So the shrimps had sex with an alien? When it obviously look like the DNA of a praying mantis and a shrimp got mixed together.
Alien shrimp. I'm done.
That’s so funny.. I was thinking in the beginning before even reading the comments.. “Man this thing kinda looks like an ugly praying mantis” and no shit that’s what it’s actually called??!
R.I.P. shrimp. They will truly be delicious. I mean missed.

Yeah man...
iI'd rather go take a shit in the bathroom.
This video was posted 3 years ago, it's now Nov 2020 and from the look of that oil they're probably still topping it up.
Wow these Shrimp 🍤 😋 are looking so delicious. My previous visit in Thailand I missed these 😔. But tried other kinds of Shrimps.
Thats the thing they dropped in Neo's belly button from the Matrix

That was actually a GPS device

This shrimp developed armour that's been evolved over hundreds of years to defend it from predators and rivals alike.
Gets chopped in half by a pair of scissors
Ismail Mata
That’s hilarious, made me grin. Well structured, and worded.
Millions of hundreds of years no less.
Well, nothing beats a sea scissor in their natural habitat
Human take thoundsands of years to develop steel tool
Ismail Mata
Hundreds of years, dude? I'm pretty sure that evolutionary time scales are slightly longer than that...Still and all, good point: all that adaptation and here comes a pair of scissors, and fini!
On the other hand, there's the concept of coevolution to consider, the gradual symbiosis of species that might have started as Hunter and Hunted, or even parasitic (think human mitochondria--bacteria invading primitive hominids which then eventually end up playing a crucial role in the generation transmission of DNA, without which modern humans would not be modern humans.
In the realm of more mutual symbiotic relationships, there's the classic story of humans and cannabis, each changing the other as they coevolve (part of the "stoned ape" hypothesis...)
So maybe that's what we're seeing here--the alien shrimp are steadily becoming more human, while the humans are slowly getting a little buggier each generation...I think this might explain the weirdness, the insectile nature of some of the people you might meet on the subway...or in crowded urban areas, the human/cockroach hybrid.
Bon appetit!
These are called "galeras" in southern Spain. We eat them steamed and they look soooo much better than deep fried... honestly. It is curious to see how they are captured. Mantis shrimp are also cooked on a short pasta/rice stew called "guiso de galeras". Enjoy!
Exacto, marisco muy apreciado en Andalucía y otras regiones españolas. Es curioso ver los comentarios de gente asombrada que nunca lo había visto, para ser honestos gozan de un particular aspecto cuando están vivos. Un saludo.
I think, They aren't wild.
U can see a video they walk on beach with some kind of pump shovel they stick it in sand and pull pump and sucks up sand from below amd they usually fall out from sand
Sounds like I need to go to Spain and try some of the dishes out there
will definitely look this up!
Still crazy how we are with foods. Who actually saw something swimming around that looked like it was beamed down from an alien ship and thought, "Whoa, look at that! Let's catch it, cook it, and eat it!" lol
Anything is edible if you are brave enough

This is my first time seeing this Mantis shrimp. I wish I can have a taste of it in the future. This looks like that seafood I see on a Chinese seafood blogger. Looks yummy 😋
My first time also. I thought it was a giant roach
Mantis shrimp are pretty amazing creatures. They have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom with 16 different color cones in their eyes compared to our 3. They are ultra voracious shallow water predators and have been known to hunt In rivers. Sub-species with claws use them tl smash their prey so fast that they produce an underwater shockwave that stuns them even if the claw misses. The sub-species with spines strike as fast but spear their prey or human hands if in self defense earning them the nickname thumb splitters.
They can live for decades and mate for life. So those two in the video could have been husband and wife.
Woah I had to like this
Very interesting
Thais : yeah can we eat them
those last two sentences even rhymed ... respect
So does that want there are more colors in the world than the ones we are already identifying?
@@wtf9599 well we know of UV and IR yet we can't see them. So perhaps you're right.
To everybody who say this is inhumane, it is actually the most humane way to kill them. According to Jennifer Mather a cephalopod expert, crustaceans, cephalopods, and mollusks don't have any internal temperature regulation, so if you freeze them you can get them to the point where they're really not conscious. This would be the quickest, easiest way to kill them with the most minimal pain.
Or just whack them with a sharp knife through the brain as soon as they come out the water instead of shock-freezing them and *waiting* until they become unconscious.
namjin child Crustaceans don’t have centralized nervous system which basically means you can’t kill him just to chop through their head sadly these guys did not get numbed or killed by the ice it was too Warm and you could see them moving after they were cut open
Pet Zombie They WERE numbed so they didn't feel anything. The first cut killed them instantly; they cut the heart. The movement you see is just from nerves that are still intact firing off, causing the muscles to contract temporarily.
You are wrong. most humane way to kill them is 1 blow to their brain with the knifetip! instant death! not a slow death like this shit!
Tommy No, crustaceans don't have very centralized nervous systems so a cut to the brain won't kill it instantly. A cut to the heart, however, is an instant death. Google the anatomy of crustaceans. You will see that the heart is where chefs, including the ones in the video, usually cut.
I appreciate that the shrimp are chilled to sleep, and then the first cut is right through the cerebral ganglion. Very Humane
You know in the wild they get chewed and eaten alive?
@@stevekima8881 we ain’t wild beasts bro. Why act like em when we ain’t got to? That’s why it’s called “humane.”
@@VisonsofFalseTruths but were part of the animal kingdom as well. We want and need food just as much as any of the other species. We're not much different
@@stevekima8881 Sure but we don't have to do things the same way they do. We have the capacity to dispatch animals for food painlessly. I'd argue that that gives us a responsibility, too. Its the same as with faux meat. Why should we continue to kill other animals for food when we can get everything we need without it? Right now that's not fully viable for most people, but why cause undue suffering if the alternative is as simple as an ice water bath and a sharp knife?
I mean if your argument is "we should do things this way because other animals do" I would hate to hear what you think when you learn about dolphin behavior.
@@VisonsofFalseTruths exactly...not everyone has to do things the same way. Enough said 🤷🏻♂️

they fight a cockroach at the end of men in black
🤣🤣🤣
Yep, had these guys in various forms in thailand and vietnam. They are strong enough to crack clamshells. Theyre kept in acrylic tqnks due to their ability to crack the glass. They taste like a sweet shrimp, s ort of like italian prawns. Personally i think the large head prawns in SE Asia are the best though, these are good for some dishes. Most mantis I ve seen though arent as complicated looking and are about the size of medium shrimp in the US.
All i can think about is that diner scene in The Emporers new groove.
What attack on tritan??
I love eating shrimp, crab, and lobster, but I realized they're basically sea insects, and I hate insects...
But they far from being related in the slightest
It's a complete misconception that lobsters are insects. Yes, they are both in the Kingdom Animalia and Phylum Arthropoda, but that's where they split. Insects are of the Class Insecta while Lobsters fall into Subphylum Crustacea and then Class Malacostraca.

It's called mantis shrimps and it's really delicious when deep fried. Although I've never had it in a whole form. Now I'm craving for it in a middle of a coronavirus lockdown lol

It's a type of mantis shrimp. There are multiple. This one is Lysiosquilla
this looking good this remind me of centerpiece
Beautiful colouring on these beasties while still alive. Look well tasty too 😋, although I'd prefer them uncooked and still twitching I think. Good to see them sedated with ice.
You gotta respect that they put them in ice water to knock them out so they don't feel it but the shrimp is still alive !!
6 commercials in an 11 minute vid is outrageous though
commercials? gotta get adblock
Didn't have any, and I don't have an ad block installed
everything with an exoskeleton has no sense of pain. we feel pain because of nerve endings in our dermis and since shrimp and such have no dermis they feel no pain
yes 0_0
Can you imagine one of those flying around the lights at dusk, and/or landing on your back?? SLAM, lol!!!! What a mark THAT would leave!! Perfect for when your Dr. limits you to "1 to 2 large shrimp", but fails to specify what he means by "large"! 😇

Robert Filip said nature to itself....
If Nature is beautiful why kill it? we are part of Nature as Human being we should be thankful that we born as human try eating less meat people...
NightBot Nature kills as well.. in savage manner.
In Italy we eat it too: we call it "Canocchia" and it's delicious with lemon, pepper and fresh parsley.
Ma che ne sanno questi?
Man, they look awesome to eat.
That's some wild hybrid of Mantis and Shrimp :o
I have never seen these shrimp before! Wow! Hope they taste good!

why you cook animals alive

In some cultures, the way to show respect and appreciation for the animals that died for your hunger is to use ( consume ) as much of their edible content as possible. Never kill an animal and waste its parts.
Chubby Chu whenever I hunt an animal I use everything possible. Innards and all. Heart and liver are probably my favorite of the internal organs you can consume.
Chubby Chu also some cultures eat standing up, they see it as disrespectful to kill an animal then eat it sitting down...I think. I may have that backwards
If they respected animals they wouldn't cut and cook them alive. I doubt its based off respect. Save that shit for the real Native Americans
Vibrio bacteria. If you cook them dead they taste worse and has a higher chance of making you super sick.
The fresher the kill the better never eat old dead lobster

Mantis shrimp are sweeter and tender than ordinary shrimp.
In Japan, mantis shrimp is boiled in salt and chilled to make sushi.
They're so popular in Italy, especially in the South: they're called "conocchie", or "canocchie", or "pannocchie", sometimes mistaken with "cicala di mare" (which another species)...
