I am so grateful that you shared this. I used it to teach at an Arts Camp this past summer and the kids loved it...especially when they wiped off the paint for the first time!

Great art project...nice use of materials...this has given me a great idea to apply this technique as a project for a wall in my 10 year old girls room, who loves art work...i can see hours "playing" together...thanks for the idea...
Wow! I'm astounded at how beautiful and not overly complicated this is! (and I'm sincerely not trying to take away from the process in saying that!) You've managed to make this an easy project for anyone to try, with whatever they have on hand and a quick trip to the hardware store! Thanks so much for the inspiration!
Having watched your video on how you created the textures, it's great to see the colour going on! I adore these panels - fabulous colour build-ups and gorgeous mix of textures. Mixed media is definitely The Thing!!!
Thanks - I like the powerful images in your youtube background. Your colors in your artwork are appealing. The sense of mystery works well with the colors.
@KathrineFarmer I use a lot of running water to thoroughly clean a brush. If you've failed to clean a brush well, it will be stiff and seem totally ruined. I've found that soaking in Lestoil for days will help loosen dried polymer.
@tiffnix - Thanks! I first prime the masonite and then I spread a thin layer of joint compound (1/16"). I make impressions with almost anything - BUT whatever you use MUST be dripping wet. A smallish board takes 30 minutes to texture plus 48 hours of drying time. The painting takes a couple of days with all the drying times for each coat of paint and each coat of polymer gloss medium.
@ldrobles1 Hello and thanks for the positives! I do apply TWO coats to seal the joint compound before I apply any paint. (I most often do some light sanding before sealing the thoroughly dry joint compound.) For my final coating of polymer - I mix matte polymer medium with gloss polymer medium to get a satin finish for the final product.
@joo0808 - Thanks! I prime my own masonite - I buy large (4' by 8') sheets at the lumber yard and saw different sizes. I let each color layer dry before before applying the gloss polymer medium. I also buy my joint compound at our lumberyard. Good-luck!
Even the "joint compound" will be affected by water after it dries. So I paint two coatings of gloss polymer medium on top of the DRY plaster to protect it from water and the paint I rub on with water. Hope that helps.
Yes, I need to use acrylic paints because they thin with water. I dip my fingers in water before I work the paint on the surface. I've developed a "feel" for the best amount of water. I get the paint into a consistency similar to finger paint! I haven't tried acrylic gel - that sounds promising.
I've only used one stencil. Mostly I used ruler edges, bottle caps, doilies, commercial stamps, things that I've fabricated and bread clips. Be sure to wet whatever you try using!
@uramakiistootired Hey! The method for coloring the bottles came from my work on my paintings. Some kids really got great color that way. Good to hear from you whoever you are!
Yes, try the "mod podge" and please let me know how it works. The Liquitex "basics" at AC Moore run about $3.15 at tube. There might be cheaper acrylics on-line some where.
Sure, I use lightweight joint compound - which is a ready-mix plaster used on walls and ceilings. Look for another of my videos which shows me applying the plaster and impressing textures into it. BEst.
Paul In all your painting videos, you forgot to mention how tactile it feels when rubbing in each layer of colour. I've just put the first colour layer on my first trial paintings and it felt so good. Much more fun than using a paint brush. Thanks again
I think that the waterbased acrylic varnishes would work well - although I'm not sure about their ability to stay clear and not yellow. I wonder about some of the clear sprays??? There might be a problem with the acrylic paints adhering! I think that a little experimenting would help you. I use the polymer because it is totally compatible with the acrylic paints I use - both are made by "liquitex" - Dick Blick has a good mail order price per quart! - about $14 versus $27 in stores!
@HouseandGreen - You are correct - but only regarding the CADMIUM colors which I seldom use. But I admit I do use it sometimes (cadmium red medium was used in this painting). HEALTH WARNING: avoid touching cadmium paints with bare fingers.
@malizia06 I'm sure that canvas board is rigid enough in the smaller sizes. If you use the plaster on a surface that is not rigid, the plaster miight crack.
Hello, I have been doing some of this art. My work has been turning out pretty good. The only thing when I add the different paint layers it seems that it is hard to get the vairiations of the different colors. I do add a medium gloss polymor from Liquitex after every layer of paint. I also use Liquitex heavy body paints on the 3 to 4 different layers. I do eliminate some of each colors with each layer. I just cannot get the strong different colors in which you acheive. I love your art work.
A big thumbs up! Loved your artwork. Very unique...But just one quick question- how much time does the gloss coat take to dry up? I can see that you've done quite a lot if layers.
If you are using a genuine Cadmium pigment (as opposed to a hue) please do not touch it with your hands. Cadmium is toxic, use it with a brush or a tool or wear gloves or get a Cadmium Hue paint. Sorry, I don't mean to be a party pooper here, you have created something really beautiful. Hope this helps 🙋🤓
I do a little of this on my mixed media work.. but i use molding paste.. that can get pricey. I LOVE doilies for texture..can't live without them. Love your work!!.. Do you have any other urls to follow or just youtube?

Thanks for your kind words. I've been developing this since 1971! BEst.

How thick do you get your plaster
@@juanita920 I try to keep it no thicker than 1/16 of an inch - very low relief! Maybe a little thicker but never 1/8.

Thanks - I really like doing the final color! My kind of fun.
Thanks - I have a lot of fun!
A super wirk, Paul!
@uramakiistootired Hey! The method for coloring the bottles came from my work on my paintings. Some kids really got great color that way. Good to hear from you whoever you are!
Terrific!
Thank you! I am working on a video that shows how I make the textures.I should have it posted soon.

Thanks for sharing the info.
Paul

SpaceWalla Getting good color is difficult, lots of experimenting necessary! Good-luck. (Yes, like finger painting!)
Do you have problems with the paint drying before you've finished wiping it off?
SpaceWalla Not so much, but it takes some saliva on the cloth to help loosen the paint as it dries! Time to make a new video!
Thank you Paul!

@malizia06 I'm sure that canvas board is rigid enough in the smaller sizes. If you use the plaster on a surface that is not rigid, the plaster miight crack.
@AJDilly Of course! At least it is stated on each tube of Liquitex paint: "non-toxic" and I use Liquitex exclusively. BEst.
@jillsandwich11 - I use regular wall paint primer - Kilz 2 presently.
love it
Francoise Matthyssens Thank you!
Fantastic Art Set!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love it and will try...Can I do this on luan 1/8" wood coated with gesso>>?

Thanks! I think Modge Podge is similar to the polymer medium I use. Try it!
@jerjer12111 Thanks. Yes, I think luan board will work well if you don't go too large where there is a lot of play - not too rigid.
Hi there, thank you for sharing the videos. Love the texture and colours. What product did you coat the canvas in prior to layer #3?
A big thumbs up! Loved your artwork. Very unique...But just one quick question- how much time does the gloss coat take to dry up? I can see that you've done quite a lot if layers.

Thanks, I have been taught that so I keep my use of the cadmiums to a minimum. I need some rubber gloves!
This is really beautiful. How do you create the pretty textures though? Thanks for posting this!
I do a little of this on my mixed media work.. but i use molding paste.. that can get pricey. I LOVE doilies for texture..can't live without them. Love your work!!.. Do you have any other urls to follow or just youtube?
Thanks!
