Brilliant then and brilliant now! I made my own versions of this as small rectangular paintings and sold them all in one show in Hawi (Ha Wee), Hawaii in 2012 ...

@@bozzo16933 Paul, I have admired your artworks for years! I took those small paintings with me to Hawaii and did not have any way to make more of them during my time in Big Island. You would think things are readily available there as anywhere but it simply was not true. When the small art show was announced downtown, my friend took the pieces I had not given to him as gifts to the show and sold all of them ... tip o' the hat to YOU!

So this is plaster , not gesso?
I use joint compound which is a type of plaster that comes premixed. It is used on walls and ceilings.

You should watch my video "2012_03_My Textured Paintings_All Steps & Procedures" I use acrylic paints - Liquitex is the best brand.

No, I use what is called Masonite or standard board. Google those words.

Exactly what medium are you using?
I use Joint Compound - the premixed plaster that is used on walls and ceilings. I buy the large buckets at Lowe's. I prefer the lightweight version.

I love your artwork! Was totally amazed with your color combinations when I first saw one of your videos! I noticed that you have varying colors in your pieces. May I ask what other color combinations can be used besides yellow oxide, quin magenta, Phthalo blue, etc.? I guess how do you know what colors to put together or is it always a lighter color and then continue with each progression with a darker and darker color? I made one experimental 12 x 16 piece and fell in love with the process!
Thanks, Robin! I think that I've tried a few hundred combinations. Yes, I work lighter to darker mostly. Painting the surface black and rubbing in white is also rewarding. Lately I've been adding black to the final layer after going intense/bold with the first two colors. I'm sure there are many more colors to explore. Good luck on your journey!
