The Mistake That Turns a Regression Into An Ongoing Problem

- Just when you think you're done toilet training your little one, there's a very good chance they'll regress. Maybe they'll start having accidents on a regular basis again, or they might start refusing to use the toilet all of a sudden.
The truth is, this is perfectly normal. What we want to avoid when this happens is turning a mild regression into a more serious issue that is ongoing and difficult to resolve.
This video will walk you through how to respond when a toileting regression occurs to make sure your child gets back to using the toilet successfully as soon as possible.
I hope this helps!

EMMA!!! could you please do some videos around helping children learn to undress and dress? Thank you!
Thanks for the recommendation!
@@EmmaHubbard thanks I was hoping you would see my comment 😊
I’d love that too! I know my 2 1/2 year old can pretty much do his whole dressing routine alone but often insists on help.
Yes please! I can not figure out how to teach my daughter how to undress.
Good idea. My almost 3 year old can't dress himself yet. And I don't know how to get him to try either
Thank you for this. Grandson was doing pretty good, but now he will say he wants to go potty but when we get there he says nope! Or wants to get back on the potty 3-4 times. I’ve started telling him we’re done after 2 times even though he gets upset. Now that I’ve typed that out maybe I see a connection. Now if only I knew what to do about it 😊
My 7 month old was 90% there. And then started crawling (and now walking) and we miss nearly all the cues. Now he's like 10%. But we're hoping by starting early with zero expectations that it clicks for him. Thanks for these insights.
Hey Emma, are you able to do a video on speech and when your child is delayed or needs to go to speech therapy and how you can help improve it at home?
Hi Emma! At what age you recommend we retire the play gyms? Thank you
I started training day 1. By 4 months she was 100% trained. Any misses before 4 months were mostly my fault too be fair tho. No baby wants to crap their pants.
I’m very interested in this approach. Would you mind sharing more about how you go about it? I’m a first-time-mom so everything is still very bewildering for me. Thanks for your advice.
You mean a 4 month old baby was potty trained or you trained your baby for 4 months? Thanks in advance.
@@benatalkshow yeah the way they wrote it, it seems the baby is potty trained at 4 months (which is not really possible as they don't have proper control over thrir sphincters). I think they mean from the time they started training, 4 months went by to a proper successful training.
@@Kwiziiright??? What did they do, hold the newborn over a toilet? They can’t even hold their heads up right
So we did the same but we are still experiencing a regression. Have you experienced that? How’d you handle it
Can you make a video for toddlers (mine is 2.7y) who learnt using the pot, were doing great but after a poop incident during the night started to regress and get psychologic constipulation. Difficult pooping, not wanting to sit on the pot and crying when it gets time for it. Started pooping in the pampers during sleep time and waking up crying.
We play games, explain, encourage but there is no effect.
I’ve noticed my 2 1/2 year old loves cleaning up his clothes after an accident (spraying them down in the tub is somehow really exciting for him). Should I continue to involve him in the cleanup process even though sometimes I think his “accidents” are specifically done to be able to engage in the tidying routine afterwards?
Maybe you could try giving him some unrelated activities that include the squirting, like squirting water on the concrete.
Since it’s the cleaning process (or so it seems) maybe find some other ways for him to clean things up. It might also be the time you two spend together or playing in water so you could find other ways to involve him in things
My 14months child is putting everything into his mouth. Putting finger in the potty everytime. I try not to get angry lovingly remove it but he is now enjoying that and doing it continuously and stops only when he watches me shouting angrily. Any guidance on this
Are you potty training your 14month old?
Generally you will have more success telling a toddler what to do instead of what not to do. So if possible I would try and tell your little one what they can do or give him something he can hold when you go into the bathroom to keep his hands busy. I hope that helps.
@@TheAtHomeBaker yes he since last month he is showing the pot when he feels to do potty but not yet with pee.
@@tahrimamiddya6532 that’s amazing 👏👏
My 2 yr old will pee in the toilet but not poop in it and I have no clue why
Mine as well, she is 3 and can control her bowl movements (she announces when she wants to go), but won't poop in the potty... I have no idea what to do.
I'm about to start potty training my toddler too and I've been told my multiple parents that it's normal for kids to have a harder time learning to poop in the toilet/potty than peeing. So you're both doing great😊
It’s really common for toddlers to be fearful of pooping into the toilet but happily do a wee. When they are pooping kids can be fearful that they are loosing a part of themselves or it could be because they actively have to push and sometimes it can hurt. In this video I go through some steps that you can do to help them learn to poop on the toilet. It is on constipation but the tips are the same. ua-cam.com/video/n1kPzW8fgHE/v-deo.html&si=oapM7y3YPrrmxuie. I hope it helps!
My daughter was both pee & poop potty trained at 3, overnight at 4. My son was pee potty trained at 3, but poop didn’t happen until 5 and he’s turning 6 next month and still in overnight pull-ups. My suggestion is to try different techniques, but if they aren’t sticking, it might just be developmental. Then just give it a month or so and then try again. I’ve found that it’s not worth frustrating us both and causing a negative feeling around the potty. I hope this helps, and I’m curious to hear what Emma says.
Oops. She already replied while I was typing 🙃
❤❤❤
Thanks!
🥰
Oh boy, we’re going to attempt potty training our newly two year old a few months before baby #2 gets here 😬 hoping for the best 🤞
What to do if 3 year old flat out refuses. Sometimes she changes her own diaper but she won’t sit on the toilet. Bribes or rewards are not working. I’m lost.
My soon to be three daughter will say potty time when she has already pooped on her diaper. Sometimes she does in the potty, but I find it difficult to time her since I am looking after her infant brother. I am really worried because next year she will be going to the daycare. Any parent out there like me?
When u have this break from the teaining do u put nappy back or underwear?
and what if there has been no small or big changes? when my son started to regress with bowl movements there were no changes....and the regression has gotten WORSE. and we cant get into our dr for over a month
I just started potty training my almost 3 year old every 2 hrs for at least 5 minutes he’ll go if he got his iPad lol
Hopefully the potty training goes smoothly!
@@EmmaHubbard me to whenever I say let’s go to the potty he says no but goes anyway now if only he would take a bath that easy
What is considered the best age to start potty training? As a first time mom who will return to 40 hour work weeks in a little bit, im trying to figure out how to best space my time to make the most of it with my daughter
We started at 6 months. We just pop him on. He intuitively knew to push. Some people start even earlier, others much later. Just give it a try, you may be surprised. But by starting early, we have no expectation, so that's made it easier for us. Best of luck
@@a.nobodys.nobody thank you
@@dawnamarco7457 of course. Fwiw: We only try for maybe 10 - 20 seconds. In my experience, If he's going to go, he goes fast. And that way we avoid a negative association by keeping him on too long.
