    man was a sleeper hit during Fergie's era. looked lazy at first sight, then pops up with one of the most exquisite touches in world football. and invented the Berba Spin. Genius

      Yeah, I think most United fans loved him, there seemed to be some impression outside the fan base that we were frustrated with him. Any frustration was temporary - he always gave his best I think for United. The patches were he didn't score was almost like his own frustration was putting him off. Wasn't United's best ever forward but far closer to the best than the worst

      He didnt look lazy.....he was lazy :)) that was his problem.....fergie wanted a no9 and he was more of a 10.....and fergie had 3 like him....who were not lazy.....i would have kept him in 2012 and played him in the midfield i stead of scholes

    I think there's only one word that comes to mind when I think of Berbatov, and that's "silky." He had quite possibly the best first touch I have ever seen, and everything he did was so soft and smooth it was unbelievable. He definitely fell short in terms of delivering on his potential, but what a player he was nonetheless.

    • @ТониАндреев
      @ТониАндреев 2 роки тому +39

      Regarding the comment about his potential. Maybe he was just unlucky. When he was at Spurs they were nowhere near the club they are now, then he spent his prime at Man United with either too much competition or getting intentionally benched by SAF. In his last season he barely got any playtime. Most of his games were around Christmas when there were a lot of injuries. And he scored goals and showed good form, but still didn't get a proper chance afterwards.

    • @soubrao

      @@ТониАндреев You're right for sure, but it's still an accurate statement to say he didn't live up to his potential, regardless of the reasons for that. Saying a player didn't live up to their potential isn't necessarily saying luck wasn't a factor or that it was due to something they did/didn't do, it's just a factual statement that their career fell short of what could have been.
      Berba was truly special. One of the most unique players I've ever seen play.

    As a Spurs fan, losing him to Man Utd was one of my darkest days. I've never seen a player with such a first touch, an ability to control the most overhit and wayward passes. Sure, he was a defensive liability, never going to press a defence. But somehow he didn't need to. There was a sense he was just playing in a parallel universe, one beating to his own unique metronome. I can't help feeling Spurs was the right place for him, where expectations may have been lower. Sure, he won stuff at Man Utd, but I never felt he was /is as loved as he still is at Spurs

    Nothing epitomises Berbatov more than his goal for Monaco vs Nice in 2014. He gets a ball played to him over his left shoulder, one touch with his right boot and the ball is killed and bounces once. As it rises, he flicks the ball with the outside of his boot and lobs the goalkeeper. All this whilst midway between the 6 yard box and penalty box.

    "Where the side often seemed to function at a different speed to which he was comfortable" - so well said. He deserved more, than an awkward role he ended up getting, but you can't really blame either side, it was just unfortunate.

      I suppose you have to carefully consider the team you're going to and whether their style of play suits you, along with how big they are. Sancho and VDB are modern examples of a mismatch, although its probably a push to say MUFC have a style of play...

    • @javorgeorgiev6130
      @javorgeorgiev6130 2 роки тому

      There wasn't too much thought on his side how he would fit in the team. He just wanted to play for United above all else. I dont think he absolutely had to stay in Spurs, but he could have seen his awkward fit if he bothered to look. He needed a team built around him as a main striker and that was never going to be Manchester. Both him and Ferguson probably thought things would work out somehow and they weren't entirely wrong.

    BERBATOV UP TO DATE:
    At the moment he is trying to become a Bulgarian FA president, but he is fighting with the corrupt and mafia linked people in charge.
    In his team are people you may be familiar with likes of Martin Petrov (ex Man City and Atletico Madrid player) and Stilyan Petrov (ex Aston Villa captain).
    If in the future we see another talented Bulgariansl in the Prem you should know that Berbatov will be in the roots of that to happen.

    Early in his bundesliga career we would call Berbo a "Chancentod" here in Germany - someone who is missing the easy scoring chances. But he always had that unbelieveable ball control and when he finally learned to finish I felt that he was the complete striker, he had no weakness.
    And then he came back to Leverkusen with Spurs in UEFA CUP just to score against us - ofc. :D

Stoichkov took the Bulgarian team to a 4th place finish in the ‘94 World Cup, beating the last two champions - Argentina and Germany in the process. Stoichkov won a Golden Boot for club and country. Stoichkov won a golden ball and a silver ball (should have been 2x golden balls if voters didn’t feel bad for van basten’s career ending injury). Stoichkov took two Barcelona teams to UCL finals, winning Barca’s first UCL trophy, Stoichkov won 4 la ligas in a row, scoring the deciding goal in the competition on three separate occasions.

    I honestly wish he would not have been at United at the same time as Chicharito. Like my compatriot, he deserved muuuuuch more playing time. A brillant footballing mind and insanely smooth and skilled

    Berbatov was one if the players that I am always so twisted about. Great talent, but sometimes he was so frustrating.
