If Astarion was a bloated, bile filled risen corpse like folklore vampires that drank mostly from the ankle or chest there would be a lot less simping… I, however, am no coward.

DUDE i love the story of the authors at the villa but the best part is-the weather was totally messed up from Mount Tambora erupting the year before and so the year they were staying in the villa is called The Year Without Summer. the volcano erupted so much ash that it LITERALLY messed with the climate and seasons GLOBALLY!!! one of my fave facts from my many english classes in undergrad lmaoooo. thank you for this powerful deep dive into our fave twinky elf spawn
I took gothic literature in college (Byron, Bronte, Shelley...) and you hit all the right notes, I felt like I was back in class listening to my teachers. I actually took notes because you make some mind-blowing arguments here. Congrats on your brains!
Ayo thank you algorithm for another small channel with underrated videos. I am also guilty of simping over Astarion but now after playing I’m more of a Minthara person now
I already feel this is going to be a long and possibly incoherent ramble, but I'm still gonna write it. Idk if I count as older gen Z or a young millennial, but either way my first exposure to vampires wasn't our dear boy Edward, rather quite intense horror movies that only played after 12:00pm. Result of that unwanted exposure was that I have always viewed vampires as monsters. Not sexy beings or whatever. Maybe also my asexuality influenced my view on them, but I mostly blame my first experiences. Now seeing these vanilla vampires nowadays the only modern media that gave me hope that vampires aren't 'monsters' just meant to be sexualisied and romantised is Castlevania (the show). After so long I was so glad to see vampires act like true monsters. Like 'if you don't invite me in I will burn your house down' type of vampires. In hindsight I got so frustrated more because of the fact that a couple of years ago all vampires books, or at least where I was looking, were just vampires being sexy and toxic. The joke is that I'm not even a fan of vampires yet I still have very strong opinions about them XD. All of these opinions got brought up when I saw Astarion. In fact I saw him so much and everywhere that I started to hate him out of spite. Then after a while I forced myself to watch his romance supercut to just understand the hype. And now I do understand it, but I still find him a bit annoying (his personality isn't my preference). However what I do like about him and how Larian wrote him...and honestly just Larians commentary on vampirism. I really appreciate how Astarion doesn't hide the fact he's disgusted when you like him just because he's a vampire (he also doesn't hide the downsides of being a vampire). If I remember correctly he gets real judgy if you're really into him biting you or something. Also, once again just remembering off the dome feel free to correct me, there's a line or something that vampires smell disgusting and have to actively hide their scent because, you know, they're undead. ~ Idk what's really the point of this comment, I'm just rambling 😅.
While I have a deep connection to Twilight, it has done irreparable damage to the romance and vampire genres. It is definitely and intensely problematic as well. I think the writers for Astarion did a great job of adding nuance to his story and character, especially focusing on the abusive relationship between master and spawn. I think a lot of love for the character comes from that nuance, which I love. However, like you said, he can be a bit annoying LOL
Initially I disagreed with you, Astarion is hardly brooding, he does have a vengeance motif, but then so does his Sire Cazador, who is surely the more complete Byronic vampire. OK you don't get to see much of him. And to be honest I never particularly liked Astarion, though he does grow on you over time. As to why he became the TikTok poster boy, well I suppose that there aren't that many choices from the game. And he is harder to 'miss' than any other character. And then there is the wonderful VA of Neil Newbon. An intoxicating mix.
Cazador is for SURE a more stereotypical "Byronic" vampire than Astarion, but Astarion is a brooder... At least a little ;) When you have a low to neutral approval score with him and try to talk to him in camp, he will sometimes say, "Do you mind? I'm brooding." Totally agree that Neil Newbon is like most of the reason why Astarion is so intoxicating. All props to him!! Thanks for watching!!
I romanced Gale at first and I love Gale, but I decided to romance Astarion my second playthrough just because I wanted to deep dive more of his story. Wyll is next haha
the unaliving your abuser storyline is also ✨very fulfilling✨
agreed!
You could say you’re dressed as “A Histarion.”
i’m so mad i didn’t think of that myself 😔
Wait, that's hystarical
