My favorite was when an owner tried to register his horse as "Potatoes" but the clerk either misunderstood or was a smartass and registered the horse as "Potoooooooo" (Pot-eight-Os).
i love how Griffin's idea of how triple crowns should go is to just have one horse win the first one and then every other horse drop out of the remaining two so that the winner of the first race is the only one running, since after that literally no other horse has the ability to win all three
Well, you do have to remember that most breaks in a horses legs are shatters, and that means they can't use that leg at all anymore. They way they're built, even having one leg gone means that they can no longer walk, which means they can't eat without help, can't drink without help, can't run away in an emergency. Basically imagine being paralized from the waist down, and wheelchairs/moving beds don't work in any practical way for you
i feel like when you're at the point where your animals are so delicate that it's just a fact of life that several of them will spontaneously drop dead during the course of your competition, maybe you should just stop huh?
not a mercy killing when they basically force the horse to break their legs anyway. thats like saying that killing a dog who lost a dog fight is merciful when its your fault it got hurt in the first place.
yeah fyi when a horse breaks its leg it cant really exist. Unlike some other quadruped animals like dogs they cant walk with only 3 legs so its a guaranteed death sentence in the wild. For non wild ones its still rough cus you cant tell a horse to just lay down and stay still. Their going to try walking and thats gonna make it worse which puts the horse in more pain so then it becomes dangerous to itself (even more) and others. It fucking sucks :/
it's not just that it's hard to get them to stay still, unfortunately; uneven weight distribution can lead to laminitis, a condition affecting the inner tissues of the hooves, in the uninjured legs, and that can leave them unable to walk at all. that's what happened with barbaro - the broken leg was healing fine, and the other three steadily deteriorated to the point that there was nothing else to do. poor pramedya; at least heart attacks in horses are fast.
What about prosthetics? Hypothetically, could you amputate a horse’s broken leg and give it a prosthetic leg and have it survive and live a quality life? I know a dog that has three legs, but has a fake leg that helps him balance and walk pretty normally-ish. Could that be done for a horse?
horses legs are like human fingers and its fucking ridiculous. thats why they have to put them down. try bending your finger after its been broken, it never moves the same way again. its horrible
maybe they should stop forcing them into races where they frequently break their legs then. its like shooting your kid bc he broke his finger after you made him punch a brick wall to win a bet.
