Someone really needsto show these boys the Palio from Siena Italy. A horse race where the only thing the jockeys aren't allowed to do is grab the reigns of another horse and the first horse across the line is the winner, regardless of if it has a rider? Griffin would INSTANLY climax

@@pepitodiablo912 It's been happening every year for the last like 600 or more years, stopping only for the Black Death, Covid and I think part of WW2. So there should be at least some.
It is admittedly only like a minute and a half long but it is THRILLING.

The thing about the derby not being publicized and "look away and you'll miss it" is SO TRUE. I've grown up in and lived my whole life in Kentucky and I can't tell you how many derbies I've missed just from not knowing about them.

meredyth with a y on the other side of that coin, I live in Louisville. Every year it’s a nightmare! I don’t really care about the races but I dislike not being able to go around the city without sitting for hours in traffic.

@@alejandrorivas4585 Oh man... there's a lot to unpack here, so prepare for yourself for a veritable brick of text (sorry!!):
Personally, I have a pretty neutral stance on the topic at this point. I don't think the ruling that the track stewards made was a bad one, but it wasn't necessarily great because of the circumstances surrounding it. I suspect that what transpired has a LOT to do with the fact that around the time 2019 Derby was run, horse racing was getting a lot of bad press because of a string of track accidents at Santa Anita Park -- not a good look for a sport that isn't really publicized beyond the Derby. Adding to this, impeding moves like the one made by Maximum Security (the disqualified Derby winner) are illegal in horse racing, and perfectly valid grounds for disqualification. Furthermore, in this case the move was such that that if one of the horses MS impeded had taken a misstep because of his move, there COULD have been a very bad pileup, especially given how sloppy the track was that day. Given those reasons, I think the stewards' decision to disqualify MS was not only based on the illegality of the move, but also what COULD have happened to avoid catching more heat from mainstream media.
That being said, Griffin's frustration about the DQ is understandable. Country House's jockey being the one to make the objection feels underhanded in hindsight, especially since CH was NOT affected by MS's move like other horses were. That, plus the fact that how long CH's odds were compared to MS's, deeply upset some fans and led to accusations of the race being fixed, which just made a difficult situation worse. I do find it pretty silly that some fans got angry to the point where they were sending very rude/threatening messages to the owners/CH because c'mon... threatening a horse and his owners? Very uncool, not very cash money of them at all.
TL;DR: my take is that things went the way they did with the ruling because the move made by the unofficial winner was dangerous/illegal. Additionally, STRICTLY speculatively speaking, the stewards didn't want to create even more controversy when the sport was in a shaky place due to bad press. Overall, it was a mess from top to bottom because of the Derby being an extremely prestigious race with high stakes; I think there would have been some form of outcry regardless of whether Maximum Security had been DQ'd or not.
Thanks for the question! It made my day to get to talk about this :) Take care!

The Kentucky Derby is the most elitist, obnoxious, and ostentatious thing I’ve ever heard of. They don’t publicize it for fear of the commoners knowing about it, it’s a huge event based around something that lasts 90 seconds. NASCAR is more sophisticated
