For the vent-hood, I would recommend a "U"-shaped cover only around the vent-hood, not the entire space. That way you could access the hinges and have a usable space for salt and pepper or a little fire-extinguisher.

    • @mugs2460
      @mugs2460 4 місяці тому +4

I'd also want to use that space. Access to a fire extinguisher above the stove is probably limited in case of a fire though.

    • @brianreddeman951

I disagree on the fire extinguisher above the stove.
Somewhere in the kitchen, not next to the stove but quick access that you can grab without hunting for it. I have a small one hanging on the inside of the sink cabinet door.
Never had a need in decades of cooking, but hey...better safe than 😬 oil fire!

@@brianreddeman951 They're not saying don't have one in the kitchen, but rather one above the stove, where the fire is most likely taking place, isn't the best location. Reaching over a raging grease fire to get to a fire extinguisher wouldn't be ideal.

We installed the same hood during our kitchen remodel last summer and our designer tried to push on us the same height mistake that you made. Fortunately, I was thinking ahead and ended up asking them to raise the cabinet, as you did, and it was the right call. Glad you were able to catch this issue in time, but thanks for sharing it - I really thought it was the right decision then and now I have a second opinion that it was - in the same vein, if you need a second opinion about your decision, I'll back you up ;)

Solution for the panel: just mount your hinges higher on your door. It won't affect the door operating incorrectly.

TBH I'd just put the hinges higher, door should still work fine I think, and you can just have a nicer looking panel with no cutouts.

This particular video caught my eye because I did a retrofit above-range hood where previously they relied upon the cooktop downdraft vent system. The range hood was a 36” wide compared to your 30, also it was a more substantial “under-cabinet” style with a formed stainless hood that protruded permanently about the same as yours does in the extended position. But also higher up. About a full 36” above the countertop, which is around the top end of what is recommended for proper height. Regardless, I too wracked my brain for how to attach a filler panel above the hood, but below the small upper cabinet. At the same time make it virtually a blank (not look like another cabinet door), yet cleverly openable to access the electric plug as per code. My door is so close to yours, but I think a little cleaner because there are no face cutouts at all for fingerholds. I used 4 of those “magnetic push latches” to hold the panel. You just apply pressure to the panel and it clicks the latches in about 1/8”, then release pressure and the latches spring open about 3/4”- just enough for you fingers to grab the full edge of the panel. I routed a simple concave cove profile that gives good finger grab ability. The whole blank panel also has a short safety wire leash, just in case some butterfingers dropped the panel. The leash is connected with a cheap little carabiner to fully take the panel away for maintaining the fan parts etc.

I did a similar fan installation. I used stainless steel on the cabinets each side of the fan hood. Over time steam will affect the wood and possible staining as well so stainless eliminates any chance of this and it looks good too as it matches our other appliances.

I really like your initial instinct for one clean line across the bottom of your upper cabinet. Since you can adjust the depth of the hood as needed, it’s not a head injury risk. And in raising just the center cabinet means the giant lobster/stock pot will still hit the side cabinet and you’ve made a lot more work for yourself.

Beautiful to see :) Just a humble suggestion, but if you haven’t tried the centrotec chuck plus centrotec bitholder (lets you use regular bits) you really should give it a try. The bitholder is a rebranded Wera and the bit locking system is one hand operated. No need to depress with one hand and seat bit with the other hand. It’s a lovely combo, much nicer to use than the Jacobs chuck :) And if you combine it with a centrotec drill bit you don’t even need to set up a second drill for predrilling/counter sinking.

Great video, thanks this coincidentally is my next project around the house. FYI, a pedantic note. A transformer is a series of copper windings that change the AC voltage up or down. When changing from AC to DC voltage generally today it is done with switching electronic components. These are called power supplies or in some specific cases drivers.

  • @pindebraende
    @pindebraende 4 місяці тому

I enjoy and savor every upload, especially with this project. I would have probably raised the bottom of all the cabinets, instead of just the middle vent hood one. If the space between the stove and the cabinet above is too small to work in comfortably, the same will be true when you move your pasta pot over, above the countertop. You will still have cabinets that are easy to reach and spacious. This way you would also get the satisfaction of the bottom edges lining up. I appreciate that you extended the cabinets all the way to the ceiling, and you didn't make the doors too wide, so that they would be in your face when swung open. Great video!

Put the hinges on the top of the vent hood door so that it rotates up. You can then put the pulls/handles in the center/bottom to match your cabinet doors. Also, you shortened the hood cabinet so that a big pot would be easier to carry over to the sink. What about the cabinet to the left of the hood? I will say though, those are some beautiful cabinets. I am not knocking your skills or craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing. Subscribed!

I see that some commenters have already suggested raising the lower hinge up into the main body of the cabinet. I would imagine that it wouldn’t affect the operation. If you don’t want to do that you could always use some SOSS concealed stile hinges. PMI makes some 3-Way Adjustable Invisible hinges for 3/4 inch doors that would probably do the trick.

Could always add sheets of stainless steel anywhere near the hood vent. It would definitely make clean up/maintenance way easier.
Coming from the professional cooking industry and having to clean equipment, I have really come to appreciate kitchens that incorporate sheets of steel just because it makes cleaning so much easier.

I'm loving this series on the renovation! Two thought/questions:
1 - I've gotten to the zombie edgebanding with my own reno, so why do you risk a kickback by half-cutting the 1/4" banding? Just abuse a wood pushblock a little... and I go a step further and then trim them to the thickness of the plywood before I tack them on - saves the trim step, eliminates the risk of marring your pre-fin ply
2 - You have an induction stove... was there a reason you didn't just move it out of the cubby and be able to easily fiddle with the upper cabinet? I kept thinking you'd drop something on the glass cooktop...

Wow, thanks for the video. I’m just starting doing cabinets for my new home and will be using the same range hood. You removed some of the mystery? My design will be a bit different, where the left and right cabinets will be shorter, and open box cabinets below to get the same middle cabinet height above the stovetop. As far as covering up the hood “guts, perhaps I’ll just make a plywood “U” and slide it in which would leave little sliver spaces on either side. Good to know that you can change direction on the exhaust vent.

Put either a chalkboard or whiteboard surface and a clip on the board that covers the vent hood, to make a handy over stove location to stick a recipe and notes when cooking.

@@binglebongle8601I’m not sure what your question is, but my guess is why does it pull out and has a glass there? The hood’s cabinet isn’t as deep as your workbench, meaning your hood isn’t covering the front of your hob, by having a pull out system like on this hood, the front of your hob is covered by that glass and thus you will have a much better intake of all the cooking-air. And once done cooking, just push it back and you have a slick appearance again. Hope that was the question.

Hello Michael, just for general knowladge to anybody who will do similar hood instals, the minimum hight from induction stovetop to hood is 60cm and for gas cooktops is 65cm , althought this might seem low as you show in the video, it is plenty for any tall pot to be carried. It is always mounted in the same hight as cabinets for a more linear design, so i guess if your measurments are somewhat similar you did not have to remake the hood. When we cook it is very rear to need to bend down over the pot, since its hot and you can see everything youre cooking anyways, so hood being in your face is a logical explanation but it has never coused any actual issues.

And another helpfull tip for vent hood cover up is to just take the thinest plywood you have and ca glue magnets to it and just place it right on the metal hood as the magnets will hold on the metal you just need to cut the sheet shy couple mm to be able to pull it out if needed in this way you will have a small soace for spices as well

What about a metal panel that you can use to hold recipes or notes while you cook? Maybe have multiple with different decorations for holidays or to add a pop of color for fun.

My suggestion may be more work... but here goes.
Cover the area of the exhaust fan with a non moving panel... cut in with the cabinet door accent design... while just moving, the bottom hinges up to 2 shorter doors... I believe that would give FLAIR and make more of a center focus that you may appreciate

I think what I would try is to use a sheet of stainless steel as the cover instead of 19mm ply. Because the stainless is only 0.8mm you might gain back enough space to make a spice rack.

Unless I'm missing something can't you just install the hinges above the range hood block off panel? The hinge would be like 1/3 of the way up but I imagine the door should still be plenty supported. The only thing I can think of is if you don't like the look but to me the holes in the block off panel look more out of place than slightly higher hinges. Love the look of the cabinets regardless and the entire kitchen is turning out great with your amazing attention to detail and awesome design choices.

Why not pocket hole the top/bottom into the sides? Screws into the edge of cabinet grade maple ply for this type of application would make me nervous in the long run without some type of reinforcement.
Also, did you confirm you could use flex duct? They are being banned in a lot of places.

You mentioned that you are building to code. One sometimes overlooked code requirement with range hoods is: if the hood at its highest speed moves 400 (or more) CFM then “makeup air” is required. Check your hood specs and plan accordingly if you need to …

I think you would have been fine with both hinges of the door being in upper portion of the extraction fan cabinet, so no hinges in the portion where the fan is. Looking at it again... I've got some bad news that you have probably already discovered, you will have to attach your hinges to the cabinet first with the cover panel already installed and hopefully you bought the screwless hinges or you will have to screw the hinges to the door last. No way the cover panel goes on after the hinges.

Have you used any good reference book with recommended measurements for home interiors? Personally, I wish my kitchen sink had the recommended clearance on both sides. When building a full home, I imagine there are a thousand details one might miss, like the height and inset of the range hood.
