I'm curious if you have given any thought to long term wear on the veneer from removing and replacing the step ladder? My biggest hurdle in designing/building something is trying to not over build or over design it. I would have been very tempted to install some small stainless wear pads between the ladder and panel so the ladder isn't rubbing on the veneer. Maybe the ladder has some small rubber bumpers on the back and this isn't needed. Just curious.

@@MichaelAlmThis is a clear case of over engineering. A plexiglass slide plate glued to the floor of the cabinet and plexiglass bumpers on the wall would have been simpler as well as giving you more room to play with.

The next step is to ORDER ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE LADDERS because if something happens to the one you bought there is a 100% chance it will be right after they're no longer sold.

Using every bit of space was the best part when we built in our Ikea kitchen ourselves. I left one panel off to create place for a stepladder and on the other end I built in a pullout broom closet in the 17cm between the oven and the wall. Super handy 🙂

Love projects like this that make use of bits of wasted space.
Done a few similar ones in my parents kitchen.
Making them be for specific propose is also really good because whenever you make another drawer or space for things, it inevitably just gets filled with more stuff rather than help declutter what is already in the kitchen
I still remember the year I organised everything for hem, got a bunch of pot lid racks, tray racks, made a bunch of space, then my brother bought two dozen containers and a metric ton of different flavours of tea and now all that space is full and the kitchens was back to being a cluttered mess.

  • @artie4017

I did something similar to our semi-custom Ikea kitchen. Instead of covering up with a panel, we inset magnets on a lip attached to the front panel. The lip lifts up the weight at the bottom front and just slips off when we need access to our extra sheet pans , cutting boards, etc. did it to the bottom and top cabinets at the end of the run next to a wall. We really like those kind of touches.

Gave me an idea here. Build the step ladder drawer like he did, make it thicker 8-10 inches maybe and have your sheet pans on the back side. Top mount instead of side mount, or even make 2 pullouts side by side, but I think one would be better. You could put two pockets for your pans, and put you wire racks on top. It's nice reading others comment to expand upon. Hope to build a house in the near future and these ideas are being organized.

Great job. It's amazing how these little spaces don't get used and just covered with infill panels.
I helped a friend install his first fitted wardrobe project (flat pack).
No matter how they played with it on cad they just could not avoid a 6" space at the end. So instead just covering it up I lined it, fitted shelves on adjustable pins, hinged the infill panel and fitted a RF ID lock. Now they have a secret panel for storage of valuables.

I have a near-identical spot in my kitchen. It's got a tall skinny drawer, and it's where we keep all our cutting boards. It was originally designed as a dishtowel drying rack tho??? Which is an absurd usecase...because you'd need to keep the drawer open for hours (blocking the perpendicular cabinet) for it to work.

What an amazing set of videos Michael... As a kitchen designer (albeit for a big box "flat pack" store) I absolutely share the joy of putting this all together and really maximising the space, but this stool idea is the best yet... I often use a 6 inch wide cabinet in lieu of a filler because it's just wasted space otherwise and I'm going to suggest this to my customers instead of a wine rack or pull out rack which will certainly not last

I love your intelligence and precision, which always makes the funny moments that much better by contrast. I thought the funniest part of the video was the step ladder date night ad on Amazon, but the ending with your version was pure gold. Just perfection. 🙌🙌🙌
Also, I love the solutions you come up with! Great use of that space and great idea to make those custom cleats so the ladder slide in securely. I think 99% of people (myself included) would have just left an open cubby space to slide the ladder into, which would wear down / scratch both the cubby and the ladder with use. This is a seamless solve.

Nice one. Years ago, I built drawers into the toe kicks of a couple of cabinets that make part of the pantry in our kitchen so that we could hide the cat's bowls when not in use. They are in a recessed area, so even with the drawers pulled out, there isn't a trip risk. I almost made a third to house a step, but couldn't find one thin enough to fit the space. The one you used would have worked!

Now that the cabinets are installed. I came up with an idea for my vertically challenged wife. I was thinking of a way to install a step in the toe kicks. have them on rails that slide out, and when you step on the spring-loaded platform it will drop about an inch to rest on legs, so the glides don't have to support the weight. This would allow her to work on the counters more easily, but the step stool is great for getting anything off anything higher than the bottom shelf in the upper cabinets. I want to build my own home in the next few years and may accidentally put an extra 6 (not 5) inches somewhere for this idea. The extra inch will open up the choices of step stools. I wish I had found this last month.

We have those same drawer pulls, having used them now for about a year, I’d suggest softening the edges of them. We’ve had multiple scrape/cut issues with them.

Thanks for the heads up, but they must not be the exact same because these are super smooth.

Made a similar space in my parents kitchen, 15 years later they still use it daily❤

Clever use of that dead space. I like the cabinet design - although, I may have just drilled some through-holes in the inside panel so I wouldn't have to take the side off to install that cabinet.

Those oak-panels you have made are so nice. Some might even say wood-pr0n. I wish my kitchen would have such but oak is expensive material and I am bad woodworker so I merely fancy yours from far away.

What normally goes in that Glencairn? Great video, and excellent idea, this is definitely something my wife will want when we get around to building our kitchen lowers.

Beautiful kitchen so far. I do wish you had simulated the space between drawers and cabinets in your drawer front on this video. The only thing that keeps me from calling it perfection.

I laughed out loud at the shower exit/ladder dance/drinks table scene, at the end!

I ended up with a small gap next to my dishwasher like this. So I made it into a draw where I store the dishwasher tabs, rinse aid, and salt.

nice use of space. the only thing i would add is that a 1/8 saw kerf between the door panel and the drawer panel rather than glue one directly to the other. that way the gaps and spaces remain consistent through out the cabinets
