Oda gave and is giving his life for One Piece. We don't see an author be this dedicated to a single story very often (maybe Araki or like Tolkien). I respect his dedication in making one of the greatest stories ever told and I Hope when he finishes it, he lives his best life for a long long time. He is truly built different
You can add kubo to that list with what he’s doing for bleach now. Insanely heavily involved with the anime and cooking up a new entire arc cuz HE wasn’t happy with how his series ended cuz of jump’s pressing
Inoue too, I just can't but love his loyalty and affection for his art that he has, it's as if he is under a compulsion that he can't deliver anything but the best.
also there arent that many long running series. i would say the big 3, fairy tail, dragon ball, detective conana and jojo. they are the only ones that come to mind. i would exclude conan because it isnt really a single storyline.
All long running manga have a lot of plotholes, plot devices, asspulls, drawn out moments, etc etc etc, I’d rather enjoy 300 chapters of near perfectly executed fight scenes & plot, than 600 chapters of asspull power ups, plotholes, bad power scaling, etc etc
@@samt3412 Bleach never finished. Let's say for the better or worse, it was put on indefinite hiatus. If you look at back the the last released chapter (674 iirc), there was a text where it was that there was a new arc incoming
@@ashishadhikari8434 I know about the whole Hell Arc thing, but I've become convinced people who say it's happening are on some serious copium to get a better ending than how TYBW wrapped up the series
I think Jojo's Bizarre Adventure has always stood out amongst the other long running shonens as it's story structure is very different by introducing brand new settings and characters, while keeping it's core identity
Do keep in mind that MHA and Black Clover will still end somewhere around 400 chapters or more, an insanely long length for a manga. Since 1987 (35 years), we’ve only seen 13 Shonen Jump manga pass 350 chapters: One Piece, Gintama, Bleach, Naruto, JoJo’s (in Jump itself), Rokudenashi Blues, Reborn!, Haikyu!!, Hunter x Hunter, Toriko, My Hero Academia, The Prince of Tennis, and Black Clover. That’s a super long runner only once every 2.7 years. If you count series past 300 chapters in this, Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Eyeshield 21, and Food Wars get added to the total. That still would only be a super long runner every 2.06 years. I just don’t think it’s reasonable to expect series to run for 700 chapters anymore. One Piece, Gintama, Bleach, and Naruto were anomalies due to the era they released in. Around 730 series have been serialized in Shonen Jump, only 5 (Kochikame + these) have lasted 700 or more chapters in Shonen Jump. That makes an average of 0.68%. Even if you count series that last a year or longer (~205 series), that’s still only an average of 2.4%- across 55 years.
I know this comment is kinda old but just wanted to add that Bleach has less than 700 chapters, it has 686 chapters. Yes, I know that's almost 700 but still it's just a bit short
I think it’s just a different world nowadays. With Jump caring more about the health of their mangaka and people’s shorter attention spans, it becomes increasingly unlikely that we will never see series as long as One Piece, Detective Conan, or JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure again. Now, is it still completely possible that we’ll see extreme lengths again someday? Absolutely! When One Piece ends, a spot for a long ongoing series will open up, and I wouldn’t be surprised if authors become inspired to write long fantasy adventure epics once again. I also would not count out Me & Roboco; it has that feeling of “the new Kochikame.” A series that lasts forever and ever and becomes an integral part of Jump history.
The "shorter attention span" thing is weird to me. JJK will be close to 250 chapters, or 26/27 volumes. MHA and BC are near 400 chapters, at least 40 volumes. Reading 40 volumes of something is orders of magnitude more work and time consuming than consuming a couple of tik toks(a typical short attention span task). Hunter Hunter is 400 chapters (close in length to BC and JJK) and there is sooooo much information and lore that can be fit in 300 - 400 chapter series. Now, I'd agree if stories were 75 - 150 chapters. And maybe if the trend continues, we'll (unfortunately) see it get to that point.
I want to be counted amongst authors who will be remembered for even just a single great story, I'm very passionately writing a story that I truly care about and want to grow, proud to see others have the same mindset
how to spot an artist in the wild, you go guy!!! Just because their works are no- havent been seen, doesnt mean theyre not working hard and still giving it their all!!!
I believe Jump's model is making authors NOT to plan for super long stories anymore, since they need to tell a short introduction to grab attention and THEN, if it sticks, develop their stories. Having long-term plans for them would be meaningless (discouraging even) if their series gets axed only 15 chapters in.
But it is a double sword edge, like for example i was following one piece as a kid to my 23yo now and i wish it was ended like 6 years ago. Especially when the story is stretched.
@@khier-eddinehennaoui9783 nah. The story doesn't feel stretched at all (atleast for me). There'a still alot of mysteries to unravel. Especially since it's a big world, it makes sense that each island has its own story to tell plus the story of the people in it. That's what made One Piece so successful in the first place it's great world -building and mysteries. I could see One Piece going on for another 10yrs, and I wish it would
@@beaniekei8691 I am happy for you, i still remember when i loved and dreamed about the universe of one piece. But with more then 1000 episodes i just can't but feel disappointed when Luffy is still struggling with soldiers. Especially when their excellent alternatives like HxH Vagabond etc...
It's honestly more about burnout than anything else. I've tried writing for half a year and, although I would say I'm bottom of the barrel when it comes to writing and can't plan ahead for the life of me, the burn out you suffer from after a few months of thinking of how this and that will pan out and etc is unreal. Hats off to those who could do it.
Yeah, doing it with regularity is taxing. I've been writing a very long fanfiction for over four years now, and even with most of it planned, sometimes I just hit a "damn, can't focus on this" moment, or rewrite the same chapter five times, or just go and write something else, and so I don't update for months. Having to do it weekly as a job would be way more stressful.
@@HaganeNoGijutsushi Exactly. It's fine so long as it's sort of your hobby but the moment you think of it as a job, it becomes very stressful and annoying to deal with.
I appreciate the strength of both the long running format of yesteryear and the shorter stories we see today. Long runners allow people to more deeply bond with characters, while the shorter series we see today are much more tightly paced. I'll definitely miss behemoths like Dragon Ball and One Piece, but at least modern manga/anime are easier to revisit thanks to their brevity.
I don't think Shonen manga in Jump were that long to begin with. Because for the last 20 years , One Piece , Naruto , Gintama, Bleach and Jojo's Bizarre adventure are the only manga in the magazine to exceed 500 chapters and the other series , even the most successful usually didn't run for more than 8 years (about 350-400 chapters) . Series like Toriko , Haikyuu or Eyeshield 21 are among the longest series after the big three for the last 2 decades. The usual run of a series in the magazine is about 4-5 years ; Naruto , Bleach and One Piece are part of a timy minority . The Jump way of working in terms of length remained almost the same , it just keeps going without 2 of the big three .
You forgot Saint Seiya a Classic shouen that has Restartet 2 years Ago with a New Canon manga there a New rc has startet more 25 years later after the OG Ended
Honestly I completely support this change. Mangakas deserve to live their lifes. And mangas ending sooner gives rooms for more series to shine. And as a reader who is already an adult, I appreciate shorter series that don't consume a lot of my time either. I honestly think it's a W for everyone.
@@allbthatmom2153 A short series doesn’t just mean 12 episodes though. It could be 6 episodes, 12, 24, 50, 64, etc. FMAB, Code Geass, AoT, and many other animes are great and they are 100 episodes and under. I would watch and recommend 10 of those before I recommend a 1000 episode Naruto, or One Piece.
@@allbthatmom2153 the promised neverland season 1 is 12 episodes and good. You said you are tired of short animes, because there is no story or barely any to it... so I gave you a list of short animes and you call them old? The age of them is not the point. The point is a great story can be told in less than 1000 episodes. A movie is usually around 2 hours. A 12 episode anime is around 4 hours. If a 2 hour movie can have great characters, so can a 4 hour anime.
I think most of the manga/anime in these days are focused on exploting our short term memory rather than long term memory. I'll give an example, 15 years from now, I don't think I'll be able to remember Kamado Tanjiro or Izuku, but even after 50 years, I'll still remember Goku or Luffy. Hope it makes sense.
Something that made me fall in love with anime and manga is because of mangaka telling the stories that they love as much as we do is such a rare and magical thing. Absolutely giving their all for the story they've always wanted to tell is incredible
Great video. We are in a different era. Multiple factors play a part from a mangakas perspective....their health, audience's attention span, and short term vision. It has to be balanced, where they can continue to push their vision, while at the same time take care of their health.
Another thing that might be hard to realize here is stories like One Piece and authors like Oda are rare. A perfect combination of not getting axed, sufficient storytelling and drawing capabilities and talents, drawing speed, and having enough health and time to actually carry out decades upon decades of plot is, to say the least, not necessarily something the average mangaka has or could do. It seems like Long Running Shonen is ending, but the truth is Long Running Shonen has and always will be rarer than straightforward 100 or so chapter-longs. It feels like we were in an era of long running shonen, but really we were just in a weird time when 3 shonen authors met the aforementioned criteria, but it's not going to be over, they will recur irregularly, perhaps once every other decade, maybe twice a century, who knows, but in a sea of short stories and their authors there will be a longterm author in them every once in a while. Idk when the next big long story's coming, but it will definitely come, and it won't be alone, nor will it and whoever comes with or soon after it be the last, but the gaps between their arrival will certainly be filled with quick, high-impact stories.
I personally prefer stories with planned endings and shorter in length although with a less diverse plot. It’s fair to say that I’m more of “the ending defines a large part of what I feel about the series” rather an “enjoy the adventure” one.
I think the day when Hajime No Ippo (which is currently I think the longest running manga in shonen jump at 1419 chapters right now) ends this era of long-running shonen will also end. But, I don't think it will end anytime soon as the mangaka is still super dedicated to his work and releasing chapters. The story also has a lot of things that it needs to cover.
HNI isn't Jump, it's Weekly Shounen Magazine; the same magazine that currently publishes Tokyo revengers and Rent-A-Girlfriend (sad that that's who Ippo shares pages with now).
With the end of all of these series comes the birth of new ones. Anime like One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, and Dragon ball have inspired many generations and will most definitely continue to inspire more generations to come. What we truly need is more series like Dr. Stone. I say this because when Dr. Stone released it was far different from the rest it was extremely unique, but as people continued reading they got bored of the concept. I believe this is because of how fast our attention spans have shrunk, not to mention that Dr. Stone has loads of dialogue. I also believe that the length of a series depends on 3 things, and how well the mangaka is able to do them. These are Plot, Consistency, and enjoyability. The manga's overall sales usually present how well the series is doing, and it also shows the mangaka that people care for his or her manga, which in turn gives the mangaka the confidence to keep writing. An example of this is One Piece. Oda stated that he didn't intend to make One Piece as long as it is. But because he knew that people adored his story, his world, and his characters he ended up writing way more than intended, and as a result One Piece has only continued to get better and better ever single chapter. One Piece has Plot, Consistency, and Enjoyability this is why it is thriving and becoming more and more popular like no series before.
I ultimately believe that a Jojo-like structure would be the most optimal structure for the new manga readers (and probably mangakas) of the world today simply because of how it doesn't require commitment to read all of them to enjoy and understand the story. The fact that the entire theme revolves around a bloodline means that people are rewarded differently based on the part that they have read. For casuals, the reward is to have read a good wacky and fun story while getting the reference songs of the stand names. For diehard fans, the reward is being able to understand the true motives of previous characters or have found easter eggs, but to understand the theme of the series as a whole. Every kind of reader is rewarded with that kind of story structure just as long as it is written and executed carefully, just like what Araki had done. The only problem with this structure is that since there are different protagonists per part, it is nearly impossible for this series to be a top 1-5 pick for manga readers. More often than not, people's top 1-5 anime picks are from animes series that focuses only on one main character with good side characters of which the reader/viewer have already been invested in the story or relate a lot to them. In JJBA for me, I really never felt attached to an MC unlike when I watch One Piece. I want to see Luffy's eventual coronation as Pirate King, being hyped for the next chapters to come since the long running Manga's on it's final chapters. On the other hand, I really don't know what to expect with Jojolands and Jodio as a new protagonist, so my feelings with him as the MC are neutral for now.
I agree that JoJo's structure is optimal for modern long works. But it takes a LOT more planning, writing and talent to pull off, than your average story that goes forever. Most mangakas can't manage that or don't have the time/energy to plan it. Every part in JoJo is almost like a soft reboot of the series with some connections to the past. Every part has a different main theme, location, characters, villain and above everything else it needs to work as an independent story. Like in the past, when movies in a series were made to stand on their own, not just as sequels. If Shounen Jump will give mangakas white cards that says they have 50-100-150 chapters to set up their story and they can't be axed. I believe they will try it, but nowadays mangakas struggle to stay alive for 10-15 chapters and they wonder if they will be axed.
I would disagree that casuals can just start at any part in Jojo. Even they would have to start from Part 1 to truly understand the future parts and references (like in Part 7, for instance).
@@A.S._Trunks Of course they need to see the parts chronologically, it makes no sense in any other order. But each Part is a lot more different in setting, style, characters, and themes than most manga Arcs.
I hope longer series stick around as I basically grew up with them (Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece)...and now with MHA and JJK heading towards the end, idk what im going to do because while I love shorter series there's nothing quite like growing up with a series and putting years of time into it and seeing the community of fans grow and evolve which is exactly what I felt throughout my Naruto and Bleach journey and went through it again with MHA and JJK when they both started to present day
One of the reasons why Goku and Dragon Ball Z are so well known is because it was at a time when anime was trying to make its way into the west and early video sharing through VHS tapes (and eventually Toonami) being passed around by friends, helped create a generational attachment. The vhs tapes being passed around helped because it was someone showing friends an adult-like cartoon with violence and blood from a foreign country like Japan.
I hope we see more stories in the structure of Jojo's. Stories that take place in the same world but are in themselves complete with the next one giving some call backs or having returning characters to supplement the new cast. That way you can always stop every 100 or so chapters and still be left with something satisfying.
Sakamoto Days, Kaiju # 8, Akane-banashi, and Blue Box are currently my favorite reads in Shonen Jump. Hopefully the current variety of titles will continue. 😁
I’m subscribing because this really put my mind in a set of “Yea, your series is gonna be something spectacular…” My best friend whom is the artist and i being the author have a manga series called ‘Axis Zero’ coming soon. Him and i have been watching and doing tons of research for the series. I told him before we even started that i don’t have any plans on when this world is ending. Because my brain flows with so many ideas…i write it all down and have so many plots at hand. I thank you for making this video because i’m excited to be one of the many few authors/writers making series last for many years…thank you bruv 🖤 i look forward to more of your videos !!! Very inspiring 🙇🏻
Oh wow i didn’t see this till now…thank you guys so much 🖤 we’re actually getting some things done besides the manga but we are taking our series to the next level with an indie and fighting game coming soon, “Phrogs Emporium” an apparel company which we will be opening soon as well and lots more music for the series! One thing that I don't see a lot of people mentioning in the comments is that sometimes Manga being shorter can be a good thing. It allows for as tighter, more cohesive story. I know for a factthat some of my favourite stories (manga and not) have often been quite short. and self-contained
@@pn2294 Not necessarily, you can have a short running manga with an incredibly cohesive and good story with less plot holes and retcons than a longer running one, and if you want more story simply release side stories and other content to expand the world/setting.
I extend this, to other grear Jump titles, like Kaguya Sama, that ended, Spy x Family, that will run for long, they have other launched anime this year like Kubo San and Ayakashi Triangle that have popular mangas, but the animes don't make that first impact, but will run for long regardless. Jump still have Witch Watch that still don't havr anime and don't be surprised if Twin Star Exorcist return with a remake after 2024. I think Jump wants various hits that can be a sucess, than a single one. And if they need to acept the breaks, so be it, like they did with Tabata from BC. Oda is alien kkk, he don't stop work, even OP mangá have week breaks every mounth. Jump knows, that if they have 3, 4 anime/magá that are popular, they can get the money they want. Of course, the streaming helps too. Is sloooooow change, but Jump is changing.
I see many people saying jojos does it better than op but if you think about it, jojo can be described as different mangas in the same universe and concept while one piece keeps going with the same characters and having a lineal storyline even better than jjba
Would like to say that there's also still a chance that bleach will continue in a new manga arc as well. Im certainly hoping it does! The hell arc chapter opened a lot of doors for new stories
I don't think long running series will be dead, Anime will be the saving grace, Anime need long season story, the audience craving for more and more longer story. although people nowadays have shorter attention span, they didn't have short attention span when watching movie or series, only reading. anime and manga should walk side by side.
I think that a big problem is the fact that most of these mangaka’s biggest series are their first significant series. We talk someone like Oda and someone like Urasawa. Urasawa is more of a mangaka who writes so many different stories, but Oda’s legacy is pretty much strictly One Piece. Which is why I’m excited for Isayama’s next work, because he’s a great writer, and I think that he can learn a lot from Attack on Titan to create an even better story. If he wants to retire that’s fine too, but I think that since his drawing style and writing has improved so much, not to mention all of the praise that he receives as a writer specifically, means that he’ll probably have a lot of people on board immediately.
Well it was fun while it lasted, and I’d like to say thank you massively to all the mangaka who worked incredibly hard and well on these awesome manga series.
Some of the best anime are 60-80 episodes. AoT, Magi, FMA, Soul Eater, Death Note. I know some aren't you're average Shonen but then you got 100-150 episodes like HxH and more. This is actually a nice size story and I'd love more around these sizes. And going forward we could do biweekly and let the mangaka make their work under better co conditions.
Honestly FMA Brotherhood suffers from being too short which makes the beginning rushed. However I think anime works best with the 40-60 episode length which is what a lot of anime originals used to last in the 80s and 90s.
@@thomasffrench3639 FMA literally has a plot twist every episode leading up to its ending. Thats why I don't like OP. Like people say OP has no filler lmao. I beg to differ. Oda makes his own filler thats why, if you know what I mean lmao
I'm an anime only watcher and it's hard to get back into shows that go on such long breaks. This is why I was enjoying black clover but the anime is unfortunately gone for now 💔
Kind of a relief honestly. It's better for series to end in 5 or 8 years then to LITERALLY fear am I gonna die before it's over? Or will the author first?
This is definitely a trend but I also think that this may be more cyclical. To make that kind of long running series you need an author with that kind of vision and desire but then also to reach the level of sustained success that would allow them to do that AND then you need a story that could support it. MHA has the structure and success but Horikoshi wants to end it. Mashle and Undead Unluck never had the right structure for it. Kaiju is the one that I think could last a very long time if the author wants to, but it's hard to say, and because of it's slower release schedule it would take a much longer time. I think the other aspect of it that has led to shorter series is that ther's a view that these ultra long series waste a lot of time. So I think there's a concious effort by some modern mangaka to have more impactful chapters which of course moves the story along quicker. But if this remains a trend then you could see the appetite for slower stories grow so that more longer running series have a chance to be created.
No, its due to the current era, its because we watched it as kids, when anime wasn't quite as common, and the internet not as developed. Back then, watching anime made you seem weird, still today but not nearly as much. The stuff we watched then as kids made us excited, if you had to re-watch the anime now as an anime you haven't seen before I guarantee people would be much more critical. When you got into anime, the big ones were always recommended, people had strong opinions, so it made the big anime bigger and basically pushed them into success. Now, so many people watch anime, they watch different genres and recommend different anime. People also became more critical about the anime they watch. They have higher expectations for anime and if its not met they just move on. A lot of other reasons I don't have the effort to type out/can't think of off the top of my head.
As the said goes: "If I Had More Time, I Would Have Written a Shorter Letter". Better to strive for a short yet impactful story than one that it sees itself dragged so long that the audience start to lose interest. Not everyone can or should aspire to be like Oda. Full Metal Alchemist is a prime example of a series that knew how long it needed to last.
For me, it really comes down to how much you value world-building in a story. I enjoyed Demon Slayer, and although I felt that the world could have been expanded further somewhat, that still didn’t ruin it for me. The story told still pulled me in. Something like One Piece though, that HAS to run long because I feel the setting is an important one to explore. If you remove the world building you kill One Piece entirely IMO. These are just two examples among everything, I couldn’t get into JJK I feel like if more time was taken to really explore the setting I might have, but again this is all just personal conjecture and I’m aware other people might not care.
Ive noticed the pacing of recent anime ive been watching has been much faster. I felt like i couldnt get fully invested in JJK because it covered three arcs worth of content in a 20 something episode season. Its actually astonishing to see how many chapters the manga has because it doesnt feel that long. I got a shonen jump how to make manga book for christmas and it has all th current hitters like Denji Luffy Yor and others but looking at it Luffy is this character thats survived decades of seasons, hes the elder, the last one left past naruto bleach and the rest. Once hes gone, therell only be new blood left. My main story idea falls in line with how long winded my writing can get, and i can clearly see it going to naruto/one piece numbers easily, but this video is very eye opening about how the reality of the business really is and good to keep in mind. I actually dont like shorter manga/anime because i want to be invested in a world and have a good pacing. Mha has started to lose me slightly because the pacing has increased too fast and there's a lot of development in a short amount of time. The current manga market is weird and idk if itll change anytime soon, but heres hoping that even with the manga getting shorter and shorter there's an increase in the overall quality.
The thing with MHA is that the Author making it short story with how shallow & narrow it is in hero's world. The author only tell about 1 school everytime & ignored/never used other school or other country heroes. That is why it's fall in a long run. Author need to end it faster because it's losing it's steam
Well this is bad because all the greatest series are long shounen imo. If you don’t have many episodes/chapters to get invested in the characters all the setups won’t pay off as much. No 15 episode story can compete with something like hxh because of the setups, depth, and world building that is possible in longer series
the success of titles from Jump plus mangas (i.e. SPYxFAMILY, Chainsaw man, and DANDADAN) will also prove that manga artists no longer has to stress and crunch deadlines in order to create the next big hit
Not manga, but with Korean mahwa becoming more prominent the last few years, I figure it's worth at least some mention. God of Highschool ending a few months ago with around 550-ish chapters and Tower of God (which just came off a 6-7 month hiatus not too long after a 1 year hiatus) is currently 560ish chapters and supposedly only 20-50% of the way through the story. There's also a Chinese manhua with well over 2000 chapters. As for manga, as sad as it is, as someone who grew up on the HST and DBZ, these super long running series seem to be outliers more than the norm. Granted, there are some series, like Berserk, that have been running as long or even longer, but have less chapters due to having monthly or irregular release schedules. For another example, AoT ran for I think 11 years, but due to being monthly, it only has 139 chapters. You also have a series like Tsugumomo (basically softcore hentai moxed with battle shonen) that's been running since like 07 and currently has 155 chapters. Also granted, Berserk and Tsugumomo are seinen, but it's still worth bringing up. Only non-Jump shonen I can think of with 500+ chapters are Fairy Tail, Pokemon, Kingdom, and Inuyasha
Well most Mahwas are trash reusing the same old Trash leveling Formula .there are only a few good ones like Knight run the legend of the Northern blade and finally the Breaker that has returned
Dandadan is kind of strange for me because even though the current arc is very intense, I don’t even know if we are nearing any kind of conclusion and it definitely feels like one of those series that I can see going on for quite a while but who knows.
I think theres still plenty to explore, like theres so much cultural myths for the yokai and well they can bring more aliens or gadgets . Things can be made up with those concepts its just depends where the writer is heading.
@@Isukiri544 that be pretty cool, they can board the crab guys ship. For now its about getting the protagonist jewels but I think the writer can create something in a larget scale. Like he could finally return the jewels back for the sake of serving a purpose in a larger scale like protecting earth or something and that leads to following the alians to other planets. I feel if he drags out the jewels plot for too long, people are going to loose interest. So writer needs to be building an underlining subplot by now that in the future will take presidency to tie things together. Idk I hope the writer has something else under his sleeve.
This could actually have an adverse effect on the manga Industry. Shonen jump is already having a hard time finding that next big story, and it won’t if none of the series want to be long running. You think of American comics they go on forever (which isn’t ideal either) but I do believe having an author fully flesh out their world is important
I also think part of the reason why the long-running manga era is ending is because in this day and age we have so much content at our fingertips, and so much content to compare each other to. If we take it back to the days of when all the big 3 and Dragonball were releasing, Shounen Jump was the most popular serialization and it still is to this day, so naturally those exposed to manga only knew of SJ. They didn't have smartphones to open an app and start reading manga, they had to buy weekly magazines, or the physical volumes. If we compare the first chapters of the big 3 to newer manga, the level in which they hook a reader in is drastically different. For the kind of stories like the big 3, you definitely need a good amount of chapters to set everything up. But a relatively new one like Promised Neverland where it completely hooks you in on the first chapter, in my belief is a big result of having so much manga we can read that SJ needed new material which could grab people's attention span fast, and essentially make dough quicker.
With One Piece, its an end of an era. I can only imagine one piece ending will only inspire more people to be a manga artist with great stories just like whitebeard going out saying "The one piece does exist" inspiring the pirates who lost their will to find the one piece.
I’ve written over 1000 chapters in my dark fantasy seinen Of the Exps. I don’t know how I keep it going considering that I don’t have a sizeable following. I suppose it’s just a part of me. It’s not the same as doing both story and art if course, but I’ve been working on this series for more than half my life.
The thing about shorter Manga is that the Manga still tends to lose that original quality towards the end. Look at MHA & The Promised Neverland for example.
Ironically due to the popularity of mha Horikoshi was forced to extend his manga, he originally wanted it to be 30 volumes so who knows what quality was lost due to him extending the story
@@f1i273 Didn't he say in an interview that the story was halfway done back when the Shie Hassaikai arc was ending? There were around 200 chapters, which means his plans weren't far from how it's turning out. On the contrary, he planned to end it in 2022 but proceeded to lengthen the story while many fans just want the plot to get somewhere.
I think this is kind of.. too soon to say like this. There are actually very, very few actually long-running series. And I'd wager many were not planned to be running for such an absurd amount of time. The next new long-running series is most likely already available to be read. It just isn't absurdly long-running yet, because that takes a lot of time. And both time and chapter count are sometimes not even accurate metrics.
I think the reason we dont have a new goku is because of the diversification of media from the 2010s; its now much easier to see a new anime; with a larger diversification rather than whatever is seen on saturday morning channels
Growing up on long running shonen makes this a sad thought! But I think the shonen demo/genre is one of the best out there because of how much diversity in storytelling there is. Long running action doesn't have to be the future but hopefully will still stick around!
maybe another aspect of the recent and todays time is that due to the advanced technology, competition is also very high. Like comptetiton of new manga stories, so the criteria in becoming successful is more focused on economies and business rather than iconic and inspiring
Honestly, I can see so many possible future arcs of Dragon Ball that I don’t see it ending for possibly another decade or more. Hell, it might not even die with Akira Toriyama. There are just so many stories, like U6 Saiyans, Bardock, Broly, Ultra Instinct/Destruction mastery, U13-18, Beast Gohan, etc that remain unused and unrefined, and it seems absolutely no one has reached their limits mits yet. Hell, Frieza has a new insane power and is still roaming around waiting to seek revenge, and the “mortal beyond god”, who is with absolute certainty in Quitela’s universe, has still not been revealed (Jiren isn’t stronger than Beerus and neither is Belmod). So much potential and so many stories waiting to be written. It could eventually become the new Marvel/DC, with a story that never ends and just carries on for eternity.
Once One Piece is finished there is gonna be a hell of a fight among mangakas to see who gets to be the next king of shonen anime. Maybe it doesn´t even had to be from Shonen Jump at all.
I think that’s what makes certain anime like one piece special, because of how long and evolved it has gotten over time, but things change we just need to cherish it and embrace what something new is happening because I have notice that more anime are adding darker themes I personally think the era of shounen is ending and the era of seinen is approaching.
That really depends on the authors. If there is someone who is willing to dedicate himself to a single story, Jump or any other journal will hire them. Sure they'll probably test the waters with a few shorter works first if the author is new, but still, a long story is a guarantee of content for years to come.
Yeah I mean, their will be people who want to tell long storys forever, so unless the authors are actively limited on how many chapters they can write, someone will be struck with whatever hit oda.
Feel free to share all thoughts! Edit: I made a mistake in regards to Kaiju No 8. The anime will premier NEXT YEAR. Sorry about that! Edit x2: This video has had a massive surge in reception and comments so thank you all for taking time out of your day to watch. I’m enjoying reading everyone’s constructive comments and I hope you’ll stick around 🙌🏽
This has been a thing since Assassination Classroom ended at its height in popularity and ended on its own terms. And this is a good thing. Needlessly extending and milking a series long after the quality has dropped (bleach/Reborn) is a bad thing. If an author has a certain amount of arcs to tell than allow them to tell the amount of arcs and stories they want to tell. Not force them to be 10 years long bc the magazine needs a long series. Dr. Stone is a perfect example of a good story that told its story on its on length and time I believe at around 26 volumes. Saint Seiya, a series of much influence to shounen like bleach especially, was only around 25 volumes. Rurouni Kenshin barely reached close to the 30 volume mark. This is not a bad trend and in fact the long shounen trend wasn’t the normal with the exception of dragon ball and jojo’s.
What I loved about the Mangaka is that no matter how long the story gets it's still going to have an ending meanwhile Comics are milking the crap out of their characters by constantly rebooting the universe and even worse they didn't give any of the characters a happy ending before they get rebooted as it just goes A Multiversal War is happening and it's going to collapse all reality!!!! Flash goes run or some powerful hero changed that fate and boom it erased the olde universe and boom new universe and new storylines are coming with the same characters fighting against the same Villains and going to the same character development we seen again and again.
If only Marvel Retires Peter Parker, by making him a Father with Mary Jane as his Wife, or X-Men ending their Story with Humans & Mutants living in peace.
Wrong things will get better actually think of it like this if you were born years ago when the first anime was ever created you might have said this nothing will be the same after that anime ended but as you can see here we have one piece, naruto, dbz who’s to say no one can make anything better then these animes
@@kevinaburto5769 "Who's to say no one can make anything better" No one is, but so far, there still isn't a single anime/manga better written than One Piece to date, so people just have severe doubts about it, doubts that will continue to be reinforced until something better actually gets written.
The thing is, as much as I do think a lot of people will definitely enjoy and like the newer series, I don't think they ever will get attached to those series like the older ones do. Simply because the oversaturation of the media. Everytime they finished a series, unless it truly tell a very compelling stories like Odd Taxi, they will immediately moved on to other series instead of actually reflecting or discussing on those series. It's like dangling new toys to 8 year old. I'm one of those people btw. I enjoyed Demon Slayer but barely thought about it once newer series like JJK and ChainsawMan came out. The cycle repeats with JJK when Mashle or newer seasons of Demon Slayer came out. It's very in the moment kind of entertainment. Idk how it will bode on Shounen Jump whether this is a good or bad thing but I do know it kinda sucks for me since I want to love those series and get invested to it only to just not care for it. Again, there are few exceptions like Odd Taxi, but that's why those series are considered as hidden gems.
Listen man Shounen Jump killed a lot of great series for the "Next Generation" and a lot of them had short runs or died. Once One Piece is gone.. well that's GG in terms of engagement I can't remember the last time another Shounen character has taken Luffy's spot on the front cover... and MHA (which I don't like) will end probably before we see it on the front as number one.
Loved the part about wishing shounen jump would make breaks for mangakas more mandatory. Hearing about the insane schedule these artists have, as an anime lover I feel somehow guilty for enjoying the fruits of their work while they're literally putting their health at risk. I wish there was more awareness about this issue.
Its kinda sad theres gonna be less and less kids having characters to grow up on. like a goku, or a naruto. but on the plus side, they at least have multiple shows available. but honestly we could be the in a new era of mass production, like the number of new big shows running in the last few years has been interesting
If I have to said why we mostly don't ever have long running manga/story anymore because there is too much in the market and the overall attention span of the viewers is too short at the current moment and there are enough people to enjoy long drawn out story to keep the manga alive for a very long term. Back then if we really want to read something, we buy it straight up now with digital and a ton of pirate site a lot of the sale and thing that work back then doesn't really work anymore.
When it comes to short manga's it always depends on how well they are written and how much of an impact they can last. For example Demon Slayer and Fullmetal Alchemist, they weren't long as One Piece or Bleach, but I felt they went on as long as the authors wanted, no need to drag them out for a long time. They went at there own pace it because of that there series are LEGENDARY!!!
Demon Slayer carried by it's anime not the story. Demon slayer's story is the same thing with previous shonen backstory & such, so it's not new but it's animation carried it
there are many reasons for this, between peoples attention spans & Mangakas health priorities but I think we could see stories try and take the spot One Piece has once it's over or in many years, the people who grew inspired by One Piece (with it being at the top and long over) will try to surpass it, sorta in the way Gold Roger The King of the Pirates started the pirate era when he died only for Luffy to go even higher me personally I like to have a ongoing story that I can look forward to consistently so I'd like more
I grew up watching anime since the early 2000’s and hate how I come back to series either still unfinished or indefinite hiatus. Anime/manga are notorious for having awful endings or even no real endings. Most manga back then did not have an ending in mind and you could tell mangakas only had a vague outline and made it up as they went. I love how authors now actually plan their entire story out now and readers can feel the story has intent throughout its run and progress towards a satisfying ending
Oda gave and is giving his life for One Piece. We don't see an author be this dedicated to a single story very often (maybe Araki or like Tolkien).
I respect his dedication in making one of the greatest stories ever told and I Hope when he finishes it, he lives his best life for a long long time.

I think it’s more to do with the mindset of mangaka and wether or not they have the fortitude (and creativity) to make a long-running series.
also there arent that many long running series. i would say the big 3, fairy tail, dragon ball, detective conana and jojo. they are the only ones that come to mind. i would exclude conan because it isnt really a single storyline.

I think Jojo's Bizarre Adventure has always stood out amongst the other long running shonens as it's story structure is very different by introducing brand new settings and characters, while keeping it's core identity
Instead of a long running whole series, at times it feels like different anime set in the same universe.
Also should point this out, it's not shonen anymore. With Part 7 the series switched to Seinen which is shonen's older brother.
JoJo is currently on its 9th Part and its been running for over 35 years! Araki will not stop until he absolutely has to!
@@supmichael Didn't he say he'll retire once he hit 60. I think he is like 60 or 61 now. So maybe the current part will be the last.
Thank you for doing the calculations! Also how the heck is there no replies
Man you really did your homework!! GG!
Thanks for doing the legwork
I know this comment is kinda old but just wanted to add that Bleach has less than 700 chapters, it has 686 chapters. Yes, I know that's almost 700 but still it's just a bit short
also dragon ball
The only series with multiple seasons I think we'll see is maybe lightnovels if it ever happens

how to spot an artist in the wild, you go guy!!!
It’s depends on the magazine
that has always been the case
Most manga shouldn’t go on forever, but there needs to be one. Having a manga/anime that you can grow up with can really help a person.

Thinking of the day World Trigger breaks through 300 chapters. It feels so alien. When will it be, at which point of life will we be.
This feels like a one piece esque dialogue 😊
... Some one carrying the will over centuries will challenge the whole world to a fight.....
I personally prefer stories with planned endings and shorter in length although with a less diverse plot.
It’s fair to say that I’m more of “the ending defines a large part of what I feel about the series” rather an “enjoy the adventure” one.

At this point, we’ll be lucky to see Shonen series last a full decade going forward.
HEALTH is most factor.
I hope we see more stories in the structure of Jojo's.
Stories that take place in the same world but are in themselves complete with the next one giving some call backs or having returning characters to supplement the new cast.
That way you can always stop every 100 or so chapters and still be left with something satisfying.

One thing that I don't see a lot of people mentioning in the comments is that sometimes Manga being shorter can be a good thing. It allows for as tighter, more cohesive story. I know for a factthat some of my favourite stories (manga and not) have often been quite short. and self-contained
That’s pretty meaningless if you want more story.
@@pn2294 Not necessarily, you can have a short running manga with an incredibly cohesive and good story with less plot holes and retcons than a longer running one, and if you want more story simply release side stories and other content to expand the world/setting.
Or even simply release sequels and prequels.

Also, shorter manga are probably more likely to actually finish.
Is sloooooow change, but Jump is changing.
yes yes es. i would love a twin star exorcist remake and also the third season of blue exorcist
I see many people saying jojos does it better than op but if you think about it, jojo can be described as different mangas in the same universe and concept while one piece keeps going with the same characters and having a lineal storyline even better than jjba

I don't think long running series will be dead,
Anime will be the saving grace, Anime need long season story,
the audience craving for more and more longer story.
although people nowadays have shorter attention span,
they didn't have short attention span when watching movie or series, only reading.
anime and manga should walk side by side.
I see you sneaking in ayakashi triangle in the thumbnail. A man of culture indeed

This is why I was enjoying black clover but the anime is unfortunately gone for now 💔
I think having long mangas with more world building and short manga whuch gets to the point sooner is both needed
Thank god. Quality > Quantity.
Perfect example is Boruto, that show could have 80% less episodes
Burito is trash
Or 100% less episodes...
The thing is weekly manga are meant to continue on for a while. Hunter x Hunter for example seems built to go on forever
Beyond Shonen Jump too and for other reasons, sadly other long running series like Berserk may not be a thing again and are very hard to come by.
@dajcomputer6514 would the Mario and Sonic franchises outlive the long running Shonen Jump franchises
the conclusion of the video is :
Oda is the G.O.A.T
Only non-Jump shonen I can think of with 500+ chapters are Fairy Tail, Pokemon, Kingdom, and Inuyasha
kingdom is seinen

Dandadan is kind of strange for me because even though the current arc is very intense, I don’t even know if we are nearing any kind of conclusion and it definitely feels like one of those series that I can see going on for quite a while but who knows.
The new arc feels like the final arc but then again it feels like it's only the start of it at the same time.
I think theres still plenty to explore, like theres so much cultural myths for the yokai and well they can bring more aliens or gadgets . Things can be made up with those concepts its just depends where the writer is heading.
@@SemekiIzuio I would love for the cast to explore another plant and lots of weird extraterrestrial cryptids.
Some times I think that one piece should not end but when I think about the health of Eiichiro Oda than I think that it is for good 😢
Attack on Titan went on for 10 years. Monthly manga can last, twin star exorcists is still ongoing
4:46 I'm in the preproduction phase of making my own manga that I plan on going for at least that long 💀
With One Piece, its an end of an era.
I can only imagine one piece ending will only inspire more people to be a manga artist with great stories just like whitebeard going out saying "The one piece does exist" inspiring the pirates who lost their will to find the one piece.

i think once you get past 1000 chapters it's definitely time to move to the ending.

I think the reason we dont have a new goku is because of the diversification of media from the 2010s;
its now much easier to see a new anime; with a larger diversification rather than whatever is seen on saturday morning channels

100% agree.
Growing up on long running shonen makes this a sad thought! But I think the shonen demo/genre is one of the best out there because of how much diversity in storytelling there is. Long running action doesn't have to be the future but hopefully will still stick around!
You forgot about Hajime No Ippo.
maybe another aspect of the recent and todays time is that due to the advanced technology, competition is also very high. Like comptetiton of new manga stories, so the criteria in becoming successful is more focused on economies and business rather than iconic and inspiring
I'm an African author and I am already working on a story that will be very long. I hope that when it drops readers will not be disappointed.
It’s probably never gonna end
Yea will probably be like the simpsons and never end. Don't think the same thing will happen with one piece though
I think maybe authors nowadays would prefer to have 3 300 chapters series than a single 900 chapter one
Because it's hard to make 900 chapters one instead of 300
that is why most new mangaka really respect long running series mangaka
Once One Piece is finished there is gonna be a hell of a fight among mangakas to see who gets to be the next king of shonen anime. Maybe it doesn´t even had to be from Shonen Jump at all.

That really depends on the authors. If there is someone who is willing to dedicate himself to a single story, Jump or any other journal will hire them. Sure they'll probably test the waters with a few shorter works first if the author is new, but still, a long story is a guarantee of content for years to come.

In today's world quality is more important than quantity
I'd rather have shorter manga tbh tho, length doesn't mean anything in making a masterpiece.
What I loved about the Mangaka is that no matter how long the story gets it's still going to have an ending meanwhile Comics are milking the crap out of their characters by constantly rebooting the universe and even worse they didn't give any of the characters a happy ending before they get rebooted as it just goes
A Multiversal War is happening and it's going to collapse all reality!!!!

Bro this stuff happened after Slam Dunk and Dragon Ball ended. It’s not something that will kill Shonen Jump
Its kinda sad theres gonna be less and less kids having characters to grow up on. like a goku, or a naruto. but on the plus side, they at least have multiple shows available.
but honestly we could be the in a new era of mass production, like the number of new big shows running in the last few years has been interesting
alternatively, they could just watch the old stuff. i mean i'm not 40 and i still grew up on dragon ball
Demon slayer's story is the same thing with previous shonen backstory & such, so it's not new but it's animation carried it
If demon slayer animation is bad or mediocore, it will not like this. One of factor need to be good to be GOOD
I feel like 300 chapters is more than enough for any good manga.
there are many reasons for this, between peoples attention spans & Mangakas health priorities but I think we could see stories try and take the spot One Piece has once it's over or in many years, the people who grew inspired by One Piece (with it being at the top and long over) will try to surpass it, sorta in the way Gold Roger The King of the Pirates started the pirate era when he died only for Luffy to go even higher
me personally I like to have a ongoing story that I can look forward to consistently so I'd like more
I grew up watching anime since the early 2000’s and hate how I come back to series either still unfinished or indefinite hiatus.
So at 0:05 ,which character is she from, the one next to main female mc from ao no hako? The blonde girl.
