I had my first pap smear and HPV test when I was 20 and my doc said I was HPV positive and noticed some discoloration on my cervix so they did a colposcopy and biopsy. Then they turned up as "pre-cancerous" cells. My doc then said I was still young so I might just fight it off naturally so to get another pap in 6 months. The next pap said that HPV was gone and my cells were back to normal, but those were the most stressful 6 months of my life. So I can relate to what you are saying.
when I had a colposcopy with biopsy it hurt like hell. did it hurt that bad for you too or was it just me? my gyn recommended that I had a cauterization on my cervix but I'm so afraid of the pain I didn't get it.
rdot jpg you are so right! The biopsy was not pleasant but tolerable with coughing. But please tell your doctor you‘re about to cough (mine advised me on it). The loop excision and cauterization were not bad as I got a mild anaesthesia.
Can we get a video about STD testing? Specifically, what tests do you order and why (or why not)? Do you include HPV, even though a patient has never had an abnormal PAP?
@Jake Dean If you're not a doctor, you should NOT be answering medical questions. You might not "see a point" but there are reasons to test for it. There are many different types of HPV, some are high risk types that are highly linked to cancer and it's better for your doctor to know whether you have one (mostly if you're over a certain age). Also, if a female is negative for HPV and they're having protected sex (note: condoms don't fully protect you against HPV but they do significantly decrease the risk), they can likely extend the time between their next pap smear if they want as long as their others have been normal (but talk to your doctor first, it depends on your medical history). In addition, someone who has a high risk type should discuss that with a partner before having skin-to-skin sex, in case the other person hasn't received the vaccine or the type might not be covered by the vaccine (remember that you're not supposed to get the test until age 30 in most cases, so this isn't something that teens and 20-somethings need to worry about right now). Hopefully soon they'll develop a test for males.
I really hope Dr Jones sees your request. I dealt with horrific periods & cramps for extended weeks at a time. I had 3 children and had had enough of the pain and bleeding.. I was 38 & haven’t had any cramping or bleeding since. I got the endioablasion & that was the best life changing decision of my life.
@@Bbpierced Oh wow so your ablation went well? My Dr wants to do that to me and I'm terrified of what could happen after. Did you have any problems after? And what difference do you see now. I appreciate any info you could give me❤ I like hearing patient stories. Thank you❤
I’ve had my period for 590 days. I’ve had 2 ablations and have taken numerous amounts of hormone pills and nothing has helped stop it. I have endometriosis. It’s a very horrible disease.
@@mandiejonsen I have endometriosis too. You're right, it is horrible and painful! That's crazy & two ablations didn't work. I don't want to go thru this: (.
@@jack-olanternAllNewsIsBad do you tell every cancer survivor that they deserved it? From what I'm aware, cancer doesn't discriminate. Your comment is hurtful and unnecessary, particularly when this video makes clear that more than 80% of women will get HPV in their lives.
Flying& Vacationing Maybe you have a point, but you don’t have to be rude. It makes you come off as a biased, sexist jackass, which makes others less inclined to trust/listen to you.
I know you did say that there are people in this country who do not have access to gynecological care but I just want to emphasize that for people who may have missed it. I am a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner student in Georgia and in Georgia there are 79 counties without an Obstetrician. We have the second highest maternal mortality rate in the country. I saw a patient this week who drove 4 hours to get to her prenatal visit. It’s a bad situation.
Alison Love That is absolutely insane. The people who call themselves pro-life are actually making it more likely that people will die. I really hope that changes in the future!
@Alison Love That sounds like an absolutely heinous situation! I assume there are babies being born in those counties. Ugh, the Country is going to hell!
Not a doctor, but after getting diagnosed with HPV and learning more about the virus and the vaccine, I'd say yes, boys should be vaccinated alongside girls at an age before they become sexually active. Boys rarely if ever show any symptoms of HPV, but they can be a carrier. And since there is no reliable testing for men for HPV (I've heard the only testing available for men can be quite painful for them so they don't really do it unless they're showing symptoms) men (or more likely those born with penises, trying to make things more inclusive but I always fail miserably, lol) can easily pass the virus without their partner knowing with them thinking they themselves are "clean". HPV is a skin virus that affects certain types of skin, not just the cervix, and men can show symptoms in those areas. HPV is not just a "girl" thing. So yes, boys, along with girls, should be vaccinated. I used to feel weird about the vaccine when it first came out thinking that it would disrupt a woman's reproductive system, but that's a misunderstanding of what the virus is and moreover what the vaccine helps with
Absolutely! Everyone 45 and under should be vaccinated! Men can transmit the virus to women and HPV can cause genital warts, anal cancer, cervical cancer, and some head/neck cancers. HPV is not a women’s only issue.
I've had it but yet have had the virus at least twice since with abnormal paps 🤷♀️🤷♀️ when I got it they told me it protected you again 8 of the cancer causing strains but there are over 100 different strains. Hopefully the vaccine has gotten better since then.
I remember being diagnosed with HPV when I was 19 years old and my doctor at the time shamed the hell out of me for having it. He made it seem like I would have an STD the rest of my life, and that I basically should never have sex again. He did a LEEP on me after one positive HVP test. After that I started seeing a new gyno who was horrified/infuriated that he had done that. When I eventually got pregnant at 23, I had to have a cerclage done, which my doctor said was a direct result of the unnecessary LEEP. I wish I had had a video like this when I was younger (I'm 31 now).
I am so indescribably sorry that that happened to you. I have been shame by a male OBGYN in the past as well. I was so angry. I’m so sorry you went through this.
Ladies, please please please go to female doctors when it comes to our lady parts. Not a place for a man to have their opinion. Sorry he was an ass towards you. Men are senseless, especially when it comes to a woman’s body!
It is difficult to find accurate information about hpv and cervical dysplasia. I would appreciate more information, another more in depth video, a series of videos that cover each stage of dysplasia and the resulting cancer would be very helpful. My Dr never answered my questions satisfactorily, he just placated me and told me not to worry. Lots of problems with that Dr.
Get a new doc!! From a woman with multiple Gyn problems for decades, a trustworthy doc who welcomes you as an active member of your care team is invaluable and in my opinion essential! Best of luck.
Had the biopsy done at 23 and of course I got to be super unlucky. Had pre cancerous cells removed. Been fine for almost 10 years. Go get checked regularly and talk to your doctor.
I know this is a year old but, I'm 32. I went in for my yearly exam a year ago and doc said that because I've had normal paps my entire life (15 and up) that I don't need one every year anymore. The state has been "cracking down" saying women are getting paps more than they should! I thought it was odd because I'm used to getting one annually and now my doc is saying I can skip the paps now 😱. Edit: my state is Illinois
Something similar for me as well. It went from every year to three years to now five years. I'm 36 and have a family history as well as an assault that brought me to my OB to be reassured that my bloodwork was enough and the remaining 3 years of my 5 would be safe to wait regarding hpv. I'm hopeful as I'm healthy, and this video did reassure me a little. I'm my case my uterus is disposable as my 3 beautiful boys are all I'll having!
Just as a different experience. I'm in the Netherlands, its normal to have your first pap at 30 years old and if everything is fine you have them every 5 years
I’m from PA originally, currently living in WV, and they always always always insisted on getting a pap every year because if you go years without knowing you’ve got precancerous cells then it’s bad news
At 32 yo, you should still get one annually. You’re still quite young, and I assume you’re sexually active? It’s your body, better to be safe… I had normal Paps until I was 49 yo, then had an abnormal Pap with positive result for high risk HPV!
Maura Zimmerman I always wondered what her name is... she doesn’t look like a Danielle to me aha I don’t know why but I always thought she looked like a Sarah or a Katie
Thank you SO much for this video. As a 21 year old who had 2 irregular paps, had an HPV swab come back positive and has had 2 colposcopies now to monitor the pre cancerous cells this is so awesome. I was terrified when I first found out what was going on but realized there's a reason this testing is done and it's to catch things early so we can keep an eye on it to manage it! My ob/gyn was SO helpful in explaining everything from CIN grades to my body being able to actually clear it on it's on. She completely eased any worries I had and made me feel very comfortable and honestly made me trust my body. Everything looked really good in my most recent colposcopy and I go back in 6 months for another HPV swab and fingers crossed its alllll good. Definitely something that needs to be talked about more and needs to be a normal conversation!!! Thank you thank you thank you. Side note: I think a video explaining the process of a colposcopy would be so helpful. I couldn't find one that helped me or made me understand and think it could be very useful to some people :)
Hey! I've had it a couple times and I can definitely say that you will VERY likely be fine. Even if it takes a while to clear it, you are young and healthy and I would bet on you clearing it.
This makes so much more sense to me now. I got diagnosed with high grade abnormality cells on my cervix, the doctor told me its usually related to HPV, but they can't tesr for it. I didnt understand why. But I got admitted for colposcopy's I get them every 6 months with scrapings, and I'm only 23Thank you Dr. Jones. ❤❤
Thank you for covering this subject. I was diagnosed at 60 with HPV and this year My pap came back negative!! I'm now 62. I was terrified!! Luckily I had a great Dr at the time and she was so good at explaining things but now we have moved to a different state and had to find a new Dr which was scary in it's own right. They need more Dr's like you out there that will take the time to stop and explain things.
@@robinhanff4248 Thank you for responding. I have read articles saying it could disappear in one to two years. I'm not sure if that's for the lower end (hvp) that could show gential warts or (hvp) could cause cancer.
I feel the same way... Only imagining myself doing it makes me feel almost violated. I was hoping of using this type of test to somehow protect myself just in case... Now idk anymore
In the UK, you are invited to cervical screening every 3 years over the age of 25. In my region, as well as many others, they do primary HPV screening and then don't even do cytology if negative. I believe if positive, they bring you back annually. Sadly, uptake of screening is really low at the moment. I wonder if these tests would help improve it.
Rachel Ripley in NZ we start at 20. You get a second smear test one year after your first one. Then if you have no abnormal results it’s every three years.
In US we get a wellness check every year (or are supposed to). If you are not sexually active/haven’t ever had sex you don’t have to have a ‘sample’ but every three years. I think the numbers are so low b/c it’s uncomfortable and a lot of women are scared off by it. (I hate getting it done. I probably wouldn’t ever if I didn’t need it for health insurance at work and birth control renewal.😒)
Why can't women over 30 take the vaginal hpv test first. Then, IF it's positive, have a regular pap smear? Wouldn't that work just as well? I can't find any answer to this. Everyone would rather have the vaginal test rather than a pap smear. This would increase compliance dramatically I'm sure.
@@elio6037 around age 11 all children get them. Boys included. New research shows a corilation on HPV and rectal and throat cancer. So all humans should get the vaccine. We do it before most would be sexually active.
ilona taylor-conway the sad thing is there are so many people running their mouths spreading misinformation about this vaccine and others. Some even believe that getting this vaccine will cause their children to think they can have more unprotected sex because they got the vaccine. 🙄
Sarpreet Kaur They have done plenty of cost-benefit analyses on the vaccine, and they have found that a girl is more likely to have negative physical effects overall from cancer than from the vaccine. That means that cancer happens more often and/or the side effects of cancer are way more likely or way worse than the side effects and severity of the vaccine. In other words, people die or have serious health problems significantly more often if they don’t have the vaccine. When vaccines were in their infancy, the original smallpox vaccine (which was the first) actually only made the severity of the disease 30% less severe if a patient contracted it, and people could definitely die from taking the vaccine. But they still clamored to get it, because people who had the vaccine still died significantly less often. I hope you make the best decision for you or your family!
ilona taylor-conway it is not standard in the US. It is optional. I had it done at 25 before I hit the cutoff age. My doctor said she was having all of her children vaccinated for it too, even her boys. But it’s not a requirement.
In Czech Republic you should go to your ObGyn doctor at least once a year and you'll have that pap-smear test etc (every single year for every single non-virgin)... We almost don't see there cervical cancer, but there is often caught pre-cancerous changes on cervix in younger population. If you take the pils you must go there twice a year - once "small" examination and after that "big" with pap-smear.
This is what my personal experience is in the US. The problem is, people are skipping their once a year visit. They are afraid it will be painful or think it is a waste of time because they have no symptoms.
My doc did an HPV test along with my annual Pap. Came back negative. He told me that I was good for 3 years. So, at least the testing helps reduce annual exams. In the USA, anyway.
Standard testing has changed recently in Australia. Where it used to be women over the age of have a Pap test every two years, now it is women over the age of 25 have a CST (cervical screening test) which tests for HPV only every 5 years. Cytology (a test to look for altered cells) is an optional add-on which is not covered by Medicare anymore and would cost the patient ~$60. If HPV is detected, they repeat the CST in 12 months instead of 5 years to check for clearance. If HPV is still detected, more invasive testing is then carried out. Home kits are available for women in special circumstances, but they are not direct-to-consumer, you still need to go through a doctor to have it done and get results.
I wish you'd have talked more about genital warts and how they are caused by HPV and how that are different strands of HPV. I had one genital wart and it completely freaked me out. Especially since I have always "been safe" and used condoms except for with my boyfriend. But here's the catch - HPV can be transmitted even when wearing a condom... btw. i also had the vaccine, that didn't help as well
The vaccine only is for high risk (cancer causing) hpv. So wouldn't have prevented warts. Also Depending on your age, you might have gotten the vaccine that vaccinated against fewer strains. My sister is 11 years younger than I am and her vaccination vaccinated against more strains than the one I received at her age.
Depends upon the vaccine, some protect against a couple of high risk strains, 16 & 18, and against a couple low risk strains that cause most warts. However, there are hundreds of different strains of HPV, about 40 or so that affect the genitalia.
I guess I am confused on one part, what about people who have tested positive for HPV in their 20s and it clears up? From my understanding it can come back, how often should they do follow up tests to make sure it’s still gone?
I believe it does, I had it when I was 17 and doctor said not to worry about it , it went away but it came back at 22-23 and had to get a leep done to get cancerous cells scraped

I'm so grateful for planned Parenthood being an option for me when I was poor with no health insurance and suddenly had a very concerning sign of HOV/cervical cancer. I ended up developing close enough to precancer after 3 years of tracking for OB to recommend LEEP. This was before I was 30. The LEEP for me made dilation an issue because of scar tissue. My friend who had one had the opposite where she was at risk for preterm labor. I think the at home tests would be a good option for people with little access or who can't afford a trip to the doctor (or several). I was lucky to have PP nearby and qualify for financial aid. Not everyone has that luxury. But I also agree with you, especially with who they are targeting and making it more of a convenience thing than actual health care.
wish they had tests for males. males can get oropharyngeal cancer and by the time it's picked up it's normally stage 3/4 cancer. At least paps can see things well beyond when cancer is formed.
I didnt know what HPV was until I had an abnormal pap from it. 2 weeks later had a biopsy. Another 2 weeks I was told I had Stage1 Cervical Cancer. 3 months before my 21st birthday. Educate yourself, Get your pap!
I got my invitation almost a year ago, and here in the Netherlands, right now, we can choose, at age 30, if we want to do it at home, or at the doctors, with an assistant doing it. We get a flyer by post with information on both. And if we test at home, and the test is positive, you have to have a test done in the doctors office anyways.
I know this is an old post, but can we please get a video on all these “homemade” pregnancy tests circulating online? Ex.) bleach and urine, baking soda, toothpaste, etc.

Love all the information! It’s also great to know for someone suffering from anxiety who might come across these at home tests and think they’re a good idea because they don’t like to go into the doctors or ask questions! Thanks ❤️
This makes sense. I guess a lit of people would have to worry needlessly. However, I can’t help thinking that these tests could help prevent infection. When I was single and looking for a partner, I was afraid that the person I would eventually meet would have a lot of HPV strands and infect me, and that I would get cancer because of it. When I met my boyfriend I asked him to test himself for STIs, but I knew that HPV was not among the tests he did. That made me worry a lot in the beginning of our relationship. If he had taken a test and it had been negative, that would have saved me a lot of anxiety. If it had been positive, we could have just waited a bit for the infection to go away. It’s just terrifying that an infection that no one knows about is spread around and giving people cancer. Hmm... I’m not sure what I think - I see both viewpoints.
I was 23 when my pap smear was abnormal. A colposcopy and two cervical biopsies later, it was mild displaysia and haven't had an abnormal pap since. I was terrified.
I like you so much! A lot of young people get scared when they have had sex and think that they have a virus or something that they will have to live with the rest of their lives. You take something that is very serious and make it seem a little less scary! Thanks for being such a good OBGYN, wish I could have you as mine! :D
I’m 22 and in the beginning of the year I was told by my gyno that I had an abnormal pap during a routine pap after having Pap smears before that come out normal and was also told I was hpv positive as well. I didn’t even know that they tested me for hpv it was just done and later I was given results I was totally devastated me and my husband were newlyweds at the time so this caused me tons of stress and anxiety thankfully my husband has been amazing and caring throughout the whole thing. It was just hard receiving the diagnosis while my husband was deployed it made me go into a deep depression I felt disgusted with myself and I was alone while my husband was deployed so it really put a strain into my mental health. I had a colposcopy done and later a leep procedure which those were hard on me as well to go through on my own. Thinking I would never be able to carry children after this or maybe lead to infertility worst case scenario scares the crap out of me. I can definitely see why you talk about getting tested in your 30s for hpv and not now in your 20s because of the stress it can put on ones mental health mostly since most of the time it will clear itself up. But I’m also kind of happy to know what I have and that eventually it will go away hopefully on it’s own. It’s made me more aware of my health and my body and taking care of it. Really enjoyed your video! Made me want to share my own experience with this. Thank you! And sorry for the long message and if I’m rambling 😅
Thanks for sharing, I'm hoping for Mine to clear up but I don't have the courage to go for my next 6months check up bc of the pandemic. It's extremely crowded in that hospital :(

In my country they don’t Pap tests anymore. Alone the hpv test. Even when you were at the OB-gyn when tested. Do you know why some countries stopped the Pap tests?
Wait I’m confused so if you’ve had a pap smear and tested + for HPV 16 or 18 (CIN 1&2) under the age of 30 should you just wait? Doesn’t that have the potential to spread and turn into cancer?
when I have my yearly exam with my gyno I have to have an HPV test done with my PAP smear every time because I was diagnosed with strains 11 and 16 with minor cervical dysplasia about 4 years ago. I showed symptoms with strain 11 four years ago, which caused my doctor here in Korea to have me get tested once a year to every 6 months depending on my results. At my doctors they snip an extremely small sample of my cervix (really small, but she said a swab isn't enough), so home testing always sounds weird to me, like it wouldn't be good enough. Luckily my last testing a couple months ago was negative for HPV and normal for PAP smear and I don't have to go in for another year. There's a youtuber named Hannah Witton in the UK talked about home testing for PAP smear, I don't remember if she mentioned home HPV tests but she did talk about home PAP smears, and I wondered if this is normal for the UK? I always felt that if you have insurance or live in a country that has single payer healthcare (like here in Korea) why not just go to the doctor for your yearly check-up, where the doctor can actually look at what's going on? I mean for rural or underpriviledged areas these home tests might be good, I don't know, the whole thing just sounds a little sketchy to me. I don't remember though if Hannah said for the in UK if their NHS pays for these home tests or not,

As far as I know (not a doctor, but a terrified person who has HPV) there are more than 100 types of the virus and only two of those are aggresive in causing cancer. So the vaccine is for 3 or so most dangerous types but you could still catch many others! Sucks, right..

Do you have any advice for young girls going in for their first pap smear? I have lots of anxiety and embarrassment related to being seen by anyone in that way. How can I deal with this?
Justine Ross Make absolute sure to talk to your doctor about your anxiety. If you have a good doctor they will do their best to be sensitive to your circumstances and will make you as comfortable as they possibly can. Communication is key! ♥️
Hearing that it's so common makes me feel a bit better about supposedly having it in the past. Also the plan of action I was given for it, as someone under 30, is pretty simple and I feel also might make others less freaked out about testing positive. Since there was some unidentifiable abnormality and the best guess was an already cured HPV I was told that we would monitor it annually just in case anything popped up and that was it, nothing scary but nothing ignored either. So even if you get tested and it comes back positive it might just be a case of supervising it so you know it doesn't become something scary, and that's not really so bad is it? Still something you 100% need to decide with your doctor but it's no death sentence!
Hi Dr. Mama Jones I have a quick question. I know you are not my ob but what are your thoughts. Since I breastfed my son 13 years ago I noticed that I can still squeeze a brown blackish liquid coming out of both breast. I think it's left over milk that has gone bad idk. I was just wondering your personal opinion on this. I wish I lived in Texas because you would be my obgyn. I love your knowledge and care you have for your patients. Much love from Florida 😘
At 29 years old I found out I had stage 3b CC. It’s been a hard road of chemo ,radiation, and a very rude doctor that basically called me a slut. Not knowing my background of only having one partner but as a child a raped.
Even if you had hat as many partners as physicaly possible, it would not have been in that doctor to call you names. I do hope you reported them! Hope you are better now!

Hey, I would recommend to just have your regularly pap test. Your doc will be able to notice changes before cancer appears. It doesn't happen overnight :) so IF there's something wrong, the doc will be able to do something about it before cancer develops. Don't panic! The risk is still very low.

I have been sick to my stomach, can’t even talk to my doctor about it until I go back which is within a month which is when I’ll get tested again for hpv. This just made me not want to have sex anymore tbh.

Thanks for this! I wasn't concerned with an at home HPV test, but I had been toying with the idea of at home thyroid, vitamin, etc tests, but I think a lot of your reasonings could apply to these tests as well. I'll just ask my doctor if I need any of these blood tests. Plus then my insurance will pay for it.

In Australia, with the change from Pap smear to a CST, they have been able to introduce a self-collection option. You still have to see the doctor but you can take the swabs home and collect it yourself. It’s not ideal and it’s only for certain circumstances (it’s better than no test at all). Is that an option where you work? This option doesn’t seem to be widely known - not sure if it’s due to the newness of it, or not widely advertised, or not discussed - which I think could then be preventing people from even making the drs appointment in the first place.

I don’t agree I tested negative for hpv yet I had stage three cervical cancer…. Soooo, and now alllpaps will come out abnormal so anyone that had a gyno issue before should see a dr still
It is good for people that are very modest as well and would never come to the gynecologist otherwise. If it becomes positive come in for the PAP smear if not don't bother.
Ok so I have a question. My best friend was diagnosed with HPV while she was pregnant because she had an abnormal pap. She lost the baby (no relation to the HPV) and they called her in for a biopsy to look closer at the abnormality (or something like that). The doctor was shocked the abnormality was not there anymore she said it cleared up on its own. Several years later my friend goes to another gynecologist and she tells the doctor that she had an abnormal pap in the past but it cleared up. The new gynecologist automatically says she has HPV and sends her paperwork without telling my friend the results of the new pap. She has been to several different gynecologist since and they all automatically say she has HPV the moment they hear she had a abnormal pap once. So now she doesn't know if she still has it if she has abnormal cells still or what because they are automatically basing her health on what she had in the past. Is it common to go off a older pap results. I was told there are many strands of HPV that go away on their own but some dont and she has been scared to death that she might have the strand that doesn't go away, even though she was told by one doctor that it did, because the other doctors she has been to wont specify if the new pap results are HPV positive or if they are basing their decision on the one abnormal pap in her past.

My mother passed away from cervical cancer at age 32... this was pretty informative but if I did that at home test and got a positive, I would FREAK OUT. Is it hereditary? Should I be getting checked before 30?? Let's say I am positive, is this something my husband can get?? So many questions...
No, cervical cancer is not hereditary. In the US, you should get a Pap smear every three years starting at age 21. After you hit age 30, you get a pap and HPV test every five years. See your obgyn regularly (every year) and follow their guidelines regarding your health.
Regarding your husband, 80% of women will have HPV, which means at least 80% of men also have it. Someone gave it to someone. It is spread sexually. There isn’t really a test for men. Ideally, your body clears it on its own just like a cold virus. If you have it, it’s not a huge deal. Most people have it and don’t know. There isn’t anything for him to do about it.
probably a bit late on this topic when I had my smeer they found abnormal cells which led to me having a colposcopy, long story short: HPV. However, the lead up and the process of the colposcopy has led to me having what I suspect is vaginismus. It would be amazing if you could do a video on this sort of thing :)

I have a friend who is now 51. She has NEVER seen a gyno. She says she doesn't have sex and doesn't need to go. She is now possibly going through menopause. Hot flashes, periods are getting further apart etc. Also has never had children or been pregnant.
I never knew about this kinda the same lines how do you feel about virtual visits for birth control. There are sooo many apps and adds to get bc sent right to your door
It’s interesting that you’re saying common practice is to order tests for women over the age of 30... in the military, you have to have your first pap after you turn 21. I had a pap come back abnormal and then had to wait twelve months to get another one... which came back normal. Then they jerked me around, first saying I didn’t need another test, then saying they were wrong and I did.... Military doctors man😤 some of em are really walking around like they don’t know it’s 2020 now and they can be sued for malpractice.

How would you feel about ordering these tests and giving patients a kit to take the samples at home themselves? I know I have definitely put off tests because of the discomfort (even though know better!) and I’m sure a lot of other people feel the same.

Mama Doctor Jones I’ve been binging your videos today actually 😅 I really enjoy them! It still sounds a good bit louder but I understand. You’re doing great for being pretty new at this. I’m going into social work considering working in obgyn offices so a lot of this is very useful. :)
I would love to hear your opinions on the companies offering online consultations for birth control/pharmacists being able to prescribe oral contraceptives in some states. I think it’s wonderful to increase access but I know so many people who only attend a physical exam when they run out of their prescription for contraceptives, and I wonder how it will affect the frequency young people actually attend annual or semi-annual exams when they can obtain contraceptives without them.
I did this once because I was in between changing doctors and would have to wait for a month or so. I didn't want to risk it (I use it to manage my periods/anxiety), so the online consultation was a huge help for me. However, I wouldn't replace the actual GYN annual with the online thing because online, the consultation cost about 30 dollars. With my insurance, it's free and so are the pills. And while I hate getting pap smears, I know they're important. I can, however, see some people trying to replace their annual with the online app --- I used to work in a GYN's office and we would have girls calling all the time, complaining about having to come in just to get a refill. Those annuals are important, people. They only last for like 10 minutes and you're out.
I'm still not totally sure what a pap checks for. Like, cancer, I know... But... If I go to my wellness appointment and get a pap every single year (I do), am I okay to just basically not worry? I keep seeing these commercials that say stuff like, "Tell your doctor if you have congestive heart failure"... Shouldn't my doctor know that?! Shouldn't my doctor tell ME if I have a medical concern?! Is there something else I don't know about that I'm supposed to be doing to be up to scratch on my own medical health? Is getting the pap the thing I need to do to have the information that I need to take proper care of myself? Or does my doctor assume I'm getting other testing done? Does a regular pap result mean in good to go or am I missing something?
Wow I had HPV for 5 years in my early 20s and this is the most information I have ever received. I was getting a colposcopy every 6 months. Every time my doctor would take a biopsy as well. It went away during my later 20s. I'm starting to think that much testing was overkill.

Hey MDJ! Could you maybe do a video on pap smears and what different results could mean, or mention it in a video? I had 'abnormal results' from a pap smear, but the doctor won't explain what that means, only that it's fine and should be checked in 2 more years... doesn't seem fine to me!
i'm not a doctor and i'm seven months late, but get a second opinion. find another doctor that will explain what an abnormality would be and do not wait two years.
I HATE going to the doctor, they always do crap like this, I cant ever seem to find one that is willing to explain anything. It is infuriating. I didn't even want to have a pap, but I was told I have to have one to be eligible for Nexplanon. It was SO awkward and uncomfortable. I had to get an anxiety prescription later for when I go to the doctor from now on. 😡

I agree with u these tests should be done at a doctors office not at home. Thank u for this video. Your videos will help young and older women make the right choices for them
I'd like to add, if you think for any reason that you have been exposed to any sexually transmitted infections, it's better to go and speak to a sexual health clinic where the practitioners there will be able to best advise you (and perform) on which tests you need. I don't know about at home sti testing as I don't know what's available but I just fear this hpv one will prevent certain people from seeking out more thorough advice ❤
I just had a cone biopsy done, I also got a tubal ligation at the same time. It was a little scary but thankfully not cancer ! It's a real thing and I think everyone should keep up with your pap test. If you get an at home test positive than you are still going to have to go to the gyno who is going to want to do a pap anyways iuno to me may as well just see your gyno.

What is your opinion about HPV immunization? I have heard that the shot has its own complications and disadvantages. Since the virus doesn't negatively effect most people, are we chosing to take on more risk by having the HPV immunization when it is most likely one we won't need?
these comments & this video calmed me down so much. 9 months ago i had an abnormal pap thinking my flare ups were from yeast infections. 3 months later i was due again, coming back positive for hpv & low grade cells. i panicked. i was 22. im due back in a few days, but i panicked about which strand i have. sooo i bought everlywell for answers.
I've had abnormal paps for like 5 years straight, my doctor finally decided to do a colposcopy. Results were indeterminate, I live in constant fear that I'm gonna get cancer in the near future 😥
I'm in the same situation. I've had normal paps since I was 20 but last one was abnormal. I went through colposcopy but the doctor didn't find anything (visually). After that he did a biopsy because he thought that the virus would be seen on inner tissues. The biopsy results were normal. So last week I did another paps and colposcopy, this time only in the vaginal canal but during the exam he was telling me he couldn't spot anything like blotches, dot, whatever. So I'm freaking out since July because the pap smear test says there's something weird (high level) but other tests says "nah... nothing to see here".
@@isisbinder still go to colp and co test with hpv test and pap. Something is lurking there. Colposcopy can miss a lot of cancer dysplasia to the untrained eye. It can also be inside the cervix canal.
please do a video on mthfr gene variants and the following topics in relation to the homozygous gene variants: 1. miscarriage 2. hormonal contraceptive safety? higher risk of blood clots? 3. injectable blood thinners during pregnancy to prevent miscarriage?
Thank you for explaining the reasoning as to why early testing can be negative. I found out my family has the BECA gene mutation, and I've been struggling with not having my daughter tested. My genetic counselor said that they will rarely test under 25 but they will not test a minor. (Although there is a shit ton of cancer on my family, there are no BRCA related cancer. It was an incidental finding in my nephews brain tumor analysis.) You explained it very clearly.
I had a friend whose Mom died of breast Ca so there was a family component. She tested BRCA test the same day with her breast ultrasound. Brca was neg. Ultrasound picked up the cancer.
I would not recommend getting the HPV vaccine because I had got tongue cancer and I had the HPV shots which were supposed to protect against the HPV virus that I got the 16 and 18 strain so it's not foolproof and there is a lot of side effects that may come with it.
@@pawsnotclaws2772 thank i am doing ok now. But i am not a doctor so always consult with yours. And always research the benefits and risk of any vaccines that you take. If it's a necessary one to help you and overall cause take it if it's not and it's only going to affect you you do not have to a vaccine that is not something that's necessary. In other words if you your only on having one partner or having multiple partners. Just get the HPV vaccine for yourself if you have plans on multiple partners. But if you're only going to have one partner the risks lower does having HPV what does not mean that you cannot still get HPV he might be a and not be realize. But always be careful I'm getting vaccines at the time I got that 16/18 HPV virus I was not sexually active at all. and has never been with a partner. I did read and some you could get it by kissing someone that may have it. But think I may have get by vaccine because I had a pap smear during the same month as starting the vaccines is the HPV vaccines you have to have three rounds of them and I showed negative for HPV when the doctor gave me the vaccine and Pap smear can show if you are someone that is sexually active or is not my doctor at the time was amazed she find out but I had tongue cancer caused by HPV virus so she thinks that they may have gotten wrong on how I got HPV. I'm not sure where or how but if it's true that I got up from the vaccines and if it can be proven one day I might be rich😄😄😄. I ama live on that all that matters. And hope that do your research and come to a smart decision ultimately this is your choice to protect you I always recommend vaccines I want everybody to be safe an thank read all this if did.

I had HPV on my Pap smear, and it went away, that was at age 21 or so. So it came back, 5 years ago, and was followed for 6 months, to see if the HPV went away. It didn't, but the doctor did an ECC and there is where the adenocarcinoma was. Long story short, I ended up getting a total hysterectomy. I feel having an HPV test at home, might not really catch HPV.
I'm sorry to hear about your outcome. I have a question: you stated you tested positive for HPV at age 21, then it came back 6 years ago. How many years later (after age 21) did it reappear? Additionally I would be concerned that whatever lab was testing your paps in between age 21 and on, was not sufficiently looking at your pap smear. I know they've created additional testing for HPV alongside of the actual "Q-tip" specimen. They now test the fluids that the specimen is placed in too. That's been in the last 4 years or so. Again, I'm sorry your treatment resulted in a hysterectomy. 😔
@@sallydavidson4471 Hi Sally. I think is was confused or didn't say it was right. Anyway, when I was 21 they found it on a Pap smear, but the colposcopy was negative, so when they did scraping in my uterus, that is when it showed positive. Did a surgery, and it was gone. I am 57 years old now, and it re-developed 6 years ago. At that time, they did do Pap smears differently, they were more concise, they Pap smear is now so advanced. It was positive then. Then am operation to see how much of my uterus had to be removed, and since my body became septic, they took it all. I am sorry if this is lengthy. I feel I kind of rambled.
I had a colposcopy and LEEP procedure, as well, and I remember that stress. But you needed to have those procedures because you had an abnormal pap, so it went beyond just a positive HPV test. Even without the HPV test, you would have had to do the procedures. The HPV test just told them why your cells were abnormal and that the chance of it happening again are pretty low. And you are right-the HPV test doesn’t give enough information about whether there are problems, so if that’s all someone gets, she can be lulled into a false sense of security! Glad all is well for you now!
Bless you Dr Osaoji keep on the good work you have been doing and thanks also for curing me off this genital warts you are truly a God sent towards humanity i appreciate you sir
I hate annual exams, but I have an extensive family history of reproductive cancers and issues. Every woman on my mom’s side of the family (except my mom, she died when she was 42. It’s possible she would have developed any one of a number of reproductive cancers, but we don’t know) has had at least one of the following: breast cancer, cervical cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, and any other kid of reproductive cancer as well as endometriosis. I pay very close attention to my cycles, to anything that may be abnormal, and I bring it up with my doctor or clinician. I’ve watched my aunt battle breast cancer (she’s cancer free now!) and I watched my step mother die of ovarian cancer. I don’t play around with my reproductive organs, as uncomfortable as a pelvic may be, it’s a hell of a lot easier to deal with for a couple minutes (or hours depending on my mental health state before and after) than to go through cancer treatments.
Thanks Dr Itua for curing my HPV 16, you are a great Dr indeed God bless you abundantly I thought all my hope was lost after I got this HPV, Your herbals are the best. drituaherbalhome11@gmail.com
I’d like to mention that dysplasia, which you mentioned could be caught via a Pap smear, is also caused by HPV. In that case a negative HPV test would rule out dysplasia.

Raise your hand if you had a leep before the age of 25. I did. Not fun. Not fun at all. It was the most painful thing I had ever done..... Before having children.
Same happened to me
Thanks for sharing this. I had no idea it could go away.
when I had a colposcopy with biopsy it hurt like hell. did it hurt that bad for you too or was it just me? my gyn recommended that I had a cauterization on my cervix but I'm so afraid of the pain I didn't get it.

rdot jpg you are so right!
BeautyWearsBoots this please. I’m 19 and I don’t know what I should be doing as far as testing and checks
I they do a Pap smear, HPV is always included because when they look at the cells, they can see the HPV.
This video was informational and things they should talk about in sex ed. But would you be able to do a video on endometriosis?

I know you did say that there are people in this country who do not have access to gynecological care but I just want to emphasize that for people who may have missed it. I am a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner student in Georgia and in Georgia there are 79 counties without an Obstetrician. We have the second highest maternal mortality rate in the country. I saw a patient this week who drove 4 hours to get to her prenatal visit. It’s a bad situation.

That sounds like an absolutely heinous situation! I assume there are babies being born in those counties.
Ugh, the Country is going to hell!
I live in GA too and it’s sad. The maternal mortality rate is insane ❤️🩹
I would really like to hear your opinion on papillomavirus vaccination, and its necessaty for boys
Bailey Jackman if I remember correctly the oldest they can vaccinate is 26. But they started my sons series at 12.
Michelle C hi! They age was just recently increased! Very exciting!
Same. Awful experience for nothing!
I am so indescribably sorry that that happened to you. I have been shame by a male OBGYN in the past as well. I was so angry. I’m so sorry you went through this.
When I found out I had HPV I was shamed by the dr. ... was a horrible experience
I left the office sobbing
I would have looked the idiot in the eye and reminded him that I got it from a MAN.
I live in Florida and for the last several years my obgyn has been saying only needed once every 3 years. I get a physical exam every year tho
Your name is Danielle?? I never knew! You are just MDJ to me 😂
Maura Zimmerman I always wondered what her name is... she doesn’t look like a Danielle to me aha

Thank you so much for this!
Could you maybe do a video on miscarriages. It would be so great to get your insides on this topic.
What did you do to be negative?
@@Royal_Kat Nothing, they said it would usually go away by itself which it did. It seems to be a common thing in women from what I was told.
@@robinhanff4248 Thank you for responding. I have read articles saying it could disappear in one to two years. I'm not sure if that's for the lower end (hvp) that could show gential warts or (hvp) could cause cancer.
What strain did you have ? So glad you are well
Not everyone wants to have pap smears if they don't have to. Many women find them degrading and uncomfortable. It's better than not testing at all.
I feel the same way... Only imagining myself doing it makes me feel almost violated. I was hoping of using this type of test to somehow protect myself just in case... Now idk anymore
Dnt get Pap if u are sure u that u and ur partner are monogamous and and no plan to remarry and will never be raped in ur life.
This is the recommendation in the US now, this is old and outdated, she should updated.
Holy moly! I just looked at the guidelines and we don't need paps anymore!! Did you do a video on that?
So why not do the test this way instead of the traumatic painful way? (A vaginal swab instead of a cervical one)
As a follow up question about HPV, what are your thoughts and recommendations regarding the HPV vaccine?
Is this standard practice in the US? In the UK all school girls at about 14/15 receive the HPV vacc? Is it the same for you guys?
What pills?
@@ElizabethSchwalie contraception pills
Same in Germany.
I believe you get tested yearly and if there is anything abnormal, it'll show up during your regular annual pap smear.

I went through this when I had an adnormal pap test at 23. I had two biopsies taken which showed moderate displaysia. After six months it went away.
I'm so happy for you .Can you tell me how?please
@@vierose6450 I'm not sure I understand your question. I didn't do anything differently, my doctor and I just kept a close eye on it.
Should you refrain from sex during this process?

Can you please tell me WHY the HPV vaccine doesn't mean I can skip pap smears/cervical screens now?

I had a hpv postive test and colposcopy last year. Now hoping this year's negative.

I am HPV positive and I had an abnormal pap test... I was very worried but I am 19 rn... I’m worried about getting cervical cancer, any advice?
Hey, I would recommend to just have your regularly pap test.
Your doc will be able to notice changes before cancer appears. It doesn't happen overnight :) so IF there's something wrong, the doc will be able to do something about it before cancer develops. Don't panic! The risk is still very low.
Take supplements and just hope for the best.

Soooo, and now alllpaps will come out abnormal so anyone that had a gyno issue before should see a dr still
Where were you when I was diagnosed with CIN2 a few months ago?! I’m 20!!!! 😂 omg I wish the 30 rule was more recognized across the board.

Smoking is a big risk factor. If either of you smoke, stop now
@Nina Lindström in general.
What’s your thought about the HPV vaccine (Gardasil)? Should I get that if my husband slept around before he met me?

when I had my smeer they found abnormal cells which led to me having a colposcopy, long story short: HPV.

At what age should girls start getting papsmeers?
I've heard at 21 but I could be wrong!
If you start having sex at that age or around that age if I am right
Once sexually active, but if not sexually active, 21
Wouldn't it be better to get vaccinated? Is it expensive in America?
Wow I had HPV for 5 years in my early 20s and this is the most information I have ever received. I was getting a colposcopy every 6 months. Every time my doctor would take a biopsy as well. It went away during my later 20s. I'm starting to think that much testing was overkill.
It's not over you when you can get cervical cancer or even oral cancer I have had oral cancer age 20 because of the HPV virus

I think more at home tests should be available, especially in Canada where our wait times are so long!

I live in Canada and had no wait time for a pap smear or HPV test (which was only done with an abnormal pap smear and colposcopy).
Can you do a video about smear tests and tips for anxious patients going for their first ones?

I'm not really hopeful that you'll notice my comment, but if you do, please make a video on the Syndromic case management for STIs ( coloured Kits). 🙏

At what age would you recommend for a women to get her first pap? Also every so often if the pap comes back normal?
Adela Ramirez 21 per ASCCP
In B.C., Canada, we do them yearly.
If I had a regular doctor, I wouldn’t be watching this. “My obey/gyn”?! This is a different America than you think it is.
Yes it is terrifying sti to have. More terryfying than AIDS.
@@isisbinder still go to colp and co test with hpv test and pap. Something is lurking there. Colposcopy can miss a lot of cancer dysplasia to the untrained eye. It can also be inside the cervix canal.
@@analyntiu3576 aids is more terrifying bcause it weaken your immune system unlike HPV that can go on its own
please do a video on mthfr gene variants and the following topics in relation to the homozygous gene variants: 1. miscarriage 2. hormonal contraceptive safety? higher risk of blood clots? 3. injectable blood thinners during pregnancy to prevent miscarriage?
What about if I got the HPV vaccine?
I would not recommend getting the HPV vaccine because I had got tongue cancer and I had the HPV shots which were supposed to protect against the HPV virus that I got the 16 and 18 strain so it's not foolproof and there is a lot of side effects that may come with it.
shannon stinson oh wow 😵 sorry to hear that. Well I got it years ago and no side effects for me
@@pawsnotclaws2772 thank i am doing ok now.
@@jack-olanternAllNewsIsBad you are wrong 99% of vaccines do work it's trying to figure out which ones are the most important ones to take when's that affect you and affect people around you are the most important ones to take everyone should take the flu shot but it's not important for them to have the flu shot because there's only a small percentage of the people that can die from it like the old the Young in the autoimmune compromised so as long as you stay away from those people you shouldn't need a flu shot I'm in if you're not what are those people but if you are one of those people you need to get a flu shot but a disease like the measles which has a case of everybody can die from it and it spreads like wildfire did you need to get a shot that's why I say the HPV shots or something that benefits you more than someone else as long as you only have one partner you should be okay and your partner only had one partner and that's you then they should be okay but if you're someone that likes to have multiple partners you should get the shot because HPV can cause cancer and for most people shot does work but there's always risk in newer shots but hasn't been around for Generations. and those cases shops that haven't been around that long I would wait see in lust my doctor says so. because I didn't go to years of college like my doctor I'm going to have eight years of residency it's always okay to get a second opinion like I said always do the risk versus the benefit if the risk is dying from not having the vaccine and living I rather live and die so I'm for vaccines.

The cin 3 was found inside the canal too i was having normal paps before.

Ugh, my hpv never goes away. 😭
First timer test co test pap and hpv if negative u are mostly.safe to test after 5 years. Most likely u are negative
Neg hpv no dysplasia. Bec hpv causes dysplasia nad many cancers.
Raise your hand if you had a leep before the age of 25. I did. Not fun. Not fun at all. It was the most painful thing I had ever done..... Before having children.
