Slight correction: Twilight did NOT start that fiasco because of boredom. She enchants the doll because she hadn't turned in a lesson to Princess Celestia and was literally TERRIFIED that Celestia would disown her as a student; she tried to talk to her friends about it but they just laughed her worries away. It's been shown repeatedly that Twilight has a crippling fear of disappointing others, especially her mentor, and that fear is a major factor in a lot of her character's conflict. I feel like it does a disservice to Twilight's character (and people who have similar issues) reduce that fear to simple boredom.
@@Nyghtking But her fear is extreme to the point where she can't function normally and becomes unstable. I think by that point it is labeled as a phobia.
Another dark episode in "girl cartoons" is winx at the end of season 4. Layla/Aisha's fiance literally dies and she sides with evil to seek vigilante justice. You could see her go through the stages of grief. I was like 13 at the time and it broke my heart to see my favorite character at the time loose her soul mate in such a way.

I know. i'm a fan of the rai English version. I think that was the first time the winx experienced betrayal without the help of magic. when episode 25 of season 4 aired I was actually surprised they went that far to have a betrayal that actually helps the plot. and it confirmed a theory that I had,fairies need to use emotions to use their powers but too much can cause the magic to go wacky
I personally kinda liked the 4kids vers but the Nick vers was good too! Wish the sound design was a little better tho. The soundtracks were kinda... idk how to word it other than generic.
With Twilight, she wasn't unhinged due to boredom, but because she felt an overwhelming obligation to her mentor and went way over the edge with her imagined consequences and the fear she has of letting the princess down. Personally, MLP has several dark episodes, IMO. Not an easy task for a TV-Y show.
What about that episode of the Powerpuff Girls where the girls run so fast, they time travel into the future and Townsville is like a post apocalyptic wasteland. Everyone in the town blames them for it and I remember it being really dark. Also the episode with the dead magician who brain washes Blossom into being thrown in a coffin full of spikes. I don't remember much from that one, but I know a lot of people consider it dark.
If you like strong female characters show then 'claymore' is an animated show which have many strong females in it. Story is thrilling, intense and horrifying. (Well I did not watch it because of male/female topic though.)
This is the first time I have ever heard of someone else talk about the coffin episode. I always tried to find it, but eventually just put it away as a dream along with a Kim Possible episode where Kim and Shego switch bodies. I still don't think that last one exists but ya know.
The reason Twilight Sparkle went crazy in "Lesson Zero" was because she was under the impression that *she* had to write a letter to Princess Celestia every single episode. There weren't any lessons to be learned or something to write about, so she was afraid that she was going to be taken away from her friends. The episode was written so that the focus of the series could shift to the other ponies, since, up until that point, it was all about Twilight and the lessons she was learning by being on Equestria. Yes, I am a guy and I just wrote that.
Twilight wasn't BORED when that event happened. The reason why she went crazy was because she thought she was on a deadline to send a friendship letter to Princess Celestia, and she cast the spell on her doll to force a friendship lesson that way she could write up something so she could be on time.

The “dancing forever” thing WAS an actual story: girl with the red shoes (which I think you can even see in the clip) In the original story, a woman got a pair of red dance shoes that forced her to dance. She would have danced even after her death, but an executioner saved her by chopping off her feet. The amputated feet still danced.
@@azimmeme9994 the other guys idea kind of makes sense (got to be honest not really that’s more just the idea of an executive saying hey what are women like?). But I have another Theory from the perspective of someone who is wow shocker, an actual girl! I think what it is is that a lot of these shows when they were being originally made had more restrictions on what could and couldn’t be shown since they were aimed at girls so any horror elements they had to show any more psychological sense rather than a blood guts and gore sense. And while more modern TV shows don’t have the same strict code for what can and can’t be shown it’s become kind of a staple of the genre.
Winx club scared me. Remember the episode where the girls had to chose between their personal wants or saving...something(I forgot what is was)? Musa had to decide between bringing her mom back to life. And and stella had to decide between losing her beauty. It doesn't sound scary, but the way the "ugly" stella looked was unsettling. She just had beedy eyes like a doll. Also, a lot of the ways the girls gained enchantix was unsettling too. Like I think aisha (or layla) lost her eyesight and techna sacrificed herself to save a planet (she came back to life after a couple of episode, and aisha got her vision back eventually but still). Or something like that, I can't remember.

That episode was disturbing. I loved it. And then the cult leader came back and fucked around with history, causing multiple apocalypses including one where nothing remains at all!
I think you missed the entire point of the MLP episode. Twilight didn't get BORED and just suddenly start causing mayhem, she was on a deadline and snapped due to her fear of failure of not being able to turn in a friendship report to Celestia on time. This is something all women face all the time and usually when our darker sides come out. We are under so much pressure all the time to be as close to perfect and reliable as humanly possible, and sometimes events outside of our own control prevents us from keeping up that persona. That's what the episode is about, instead of panicking, feeling lost, and resorting to desperate measures, sometimes we need to be able to take a breath and say "its okay, this isn't normal, but for this 1 time it'll be okay." Also it shows how power is power and does whatever it needs to, its up to the welder's intentions that make power good or evil and if one is to have power one must always be in charge of their own intentions.
Also, Twilight tried talking with her friends about her fear of not being able to deliver the friendship report and they scoffed it. Twilight was left alone, to fester in her own paranoid illusions that she would fail her deadline and be expelled from Celestia's school. As someone in College when I first watched that episode, it's very relatable. Sometimes you have deadlines and things outside of your control will set you back or even make you fail.
No Twilight in particular because she was the student of the Princess (who is /was more or less a goddess)so she thought Celestia had high expectations of her and thus had high expectations of herself.
As a former Bratz obsessed child, it has some pretty dark parts. I'll never forget 'Bratz Go To Paris', where Cloe and Jade not only get poisoned but launched off a cliff in a car with no functioning brakes! Not only is the villain poisoning supermodels, she goes out of her way to try and kill two of the Bratz (who are obviously saved before their gorey demise, without first zooming in on their screaming faces!). Rewatching, it's certainly not a great show by any means, but it didn't stop me being obsessed, lmao.
Oh yeah and at the end of the 1st episode of season 3 when rapunzel does the Decay incantation again to save varians father but when varian splashed the water on her she didnt stop until varian said that he wasnt giving up on her cause she didnt give up on him the scary part is if she didnt stop then that could of seriously harmed varian and his father
Agreed. And can I have some people back me that "Queen for a Day" is MUCH more dark than Painter's Block? Yes, Painter's Block is morbid, but everything that makes Painter's Block dark is hundreds of times worse when it's all taking place.
Whilst the 'decay incantation' is happening, at least Eugene and Lance are both having a fun, light hearted song about how great friends they are... oh wait, that was a hallucinogenic plant attempting to eat them...
There was also that one time MLP had a religious cult complete with brainwashing and the squashing of individuality and just plain creepy music "In Our Town, in Our Town we don't have to wait to find out that our destiny is just to emulate...Because we do not separate ourselves by more than name...In our town, in our town, we work as a team. I think he already covered that in a Top Ten or Top 25 Dark Kids Show Episodes. I remember him talking about how he didn't like the theme of the episode.

Honestly, that's nothing compared to the anorexia episode. Braceface is a pretty terrible show seeing as Sharon is an insufferable main character but, it covered some pretty serious and real issues and topics.

I honestly think there was a Winx epsiode darker than what you showed. Season 3's "Tecna's Sacrifice" or "Point of No Return" was a bit brutal *Even the name sounds depressing as hell-* Season 3 revolved around Enchantix, which required a fairy to sacrifice themselves for their home planet. In the episode there was a portal to the Omega Dimension that was gonna destroy the planet it was on as well as where it led to. And whoever closed it would practically never come back. And as the Nick dub title said, Tecna chose to sacrifice herself to close the portal and therefore being stuck in the Omega Dimension for a while. It was devastating not just for the characters, but to watch as a viewer I knew Tecna did come back seeing as I watched Seasons 4-6 beforehand, but honestly I missed Tecna for that short moment that she was gone. She's my favorite character, and y' can't just let your favorite character almost dissapear like that, right? It's kinda more depressing thinking about what if she never came back. IDK why I'm even typing this I barely remember Season 3 because I watched it a year ago hh Uh thanks for coming to my broken English TEDTalk
_...I honestly feel bad that I was born in 2004.. As a little girl, I didn't really like Winx Club and kinda.. turned my nose up at it.. I did the same thing with MLP, too, and also Bratz... I think this was because, well.. I don't like friendship and peace; I enjoy gore, unsurprisingly. To be honest, I don't know how Mom didn't see this coming; her fourteen year old daughter, enjoying things like DanganRonpa and Corpse Party, I honestly don't. Anyway, I honestly regret being born in 2004, because Winx was the worst, in my opinion... On the other hand, I got something good out of my birth year: Mean Girls._
Some dark alternatives for the Tangled and MLP episodes you chose that I’d recommend you looking into if you haven’t yet, are ‘Pascal’s Story’, which explores Rapunzel’s pet chameleon, Pascal’s surprisingly depressing origin story of how he wound up in Rapunzel’s tower after barely escaping the snake that ate his mother when he was still a hatchling, while also delving into some pretty hard to watch PTSD on Rap’s part as she ends up back at the now abandoned and disheveled tower after he goes missing. It was such a dark and emotional episode, but I think it provided such an important step in the continuation of Rapunzel’s story, that we got to see how the deceit and isolation of her past still affects her even when you think she’s moved on. Another dark MLP episode would be one of the season finales, ‘Twilight’s Kingdom’ where this powerful and imposing beast from the literal UNDERWORLD named Lord Tirek appears and starts draining each of the ponies of their talents and abilities to gain power over Equestria, dethroning each of the Alicorns and even destroying Twilight’s own home in the process. The episode even features one of the most intense fight scenes ever to appear in a children’s cartoon as Twilight and Tirek duke it out- fighting each other in a desolate wasteland with pure, Earth shattering magic alone. It’s just absolute insanity, and it definitely deserved a spot.
I feel like there’s probably a few more from MLP too (it is 8 seasons now, after all). There’s Starlight’s village (and also that episode where she mind controls the mane six after already becoming their friend, suggesting sociopathy), Trixie attempting suicide briefly, Luna hurting herself due to depression, season 8 dealing with racism (speciesism), and Cozy Glow herself as a villain, the episode where Twilight visits alternate futures created by Starlight where villains have won (eg Sombra’s victory involving everyone being at war with the Crystal ponies as slaves), etc.
Hell yeah. Tirek tricked flippin' DISCORD into thinking they were friends, convinced him to catch Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, even FLUTTERSHY, and then immediately revealed that their "friendship" was a total scam, and proceeded to drain HIM of his chaos-powers. (Obviously. Where would cartoons even BE without some villain-to-villain betrayal?) Although personally in MY opinion the darkest MLP episode is "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep" in which a parasite of pure darkness starts taking over the Mane Six's nightmares. Rainbow Dash says that it's not that big of a deal, they'll just be tired, and then Princess Luna explains that if it gains power, it'll infect the real world. The episode ends with them discovering that if Luna forgives herself for becoming Nightmare Moon, the monster will lose it's power. This doesn't stop her from having a hard time with it, though.
Yeah my sister was watching that episode on tv and when I looked at the screen I couldn't believe MLP of all things went the DBZ way. Needless to say I greatly underestimated that show
I think mind control is a prevalent theme in what is considered girl-aimed cartoons because of the constant threat of being manipulated. A lot of times families, communities, and societies constantly try to manipulate or even control women. Whether it's through traditional versus non-traditional gender roles, aspects of personal value and duty toward a religion, or simply in one's sexual openness preference.
It's so weird that Braceface has a "9" written on her forehead at 16:06. and then the same thing happens to the main character of Earth Maiden Arjuna....
The Earth Maiden one is a sacred bead. Not a number 9. The sacred bead seems to be a reoccurring theme in lots of anime. It's kind of like a talisman or spiritual artifact. At least that's what I recall it being called... there probably is a better name for it.
Hey Stirider! I just wanted to mention the two main messages of MLP:FiM Lesson Zero. Twilight isn't just bored when she goes insane, she's had a strict schedule that's she never deviated from. She's terrified that some kind of horrible repercussion will come if she doesn't meet her deadline for that week's "friendship lesson". Additionally, all of her friends mock her concerns and basically tell her that she's being crazy and ridiculous. At the end when Celestia arrives and fixes everything she reprimands the others for treating Twilight's concerns as nothing. She also admits that she may have put too much pressure on Twilight to complete these things herself. The major points of that episode were 1) Worrying and panicking over nothing is a fast way to cause yourself more problems than you had before and 2) Don't treat your friends concerns as nothing just because you think they're nothing. I really like this episode because, to me, it showed how mental illness can be marginalized by people who don't understand. Twilight clearly demonstrates a form of OCD in this episode and it gets brushed aside because "Oh it just isn't important because you're overreacting to something stupid". Her friends then learn that they were wrong and later in the show these lessons linger. It's more than just "Twilight was bored and went nuts". Hopefully you see this. Love your vids!
I used to really relate to that As Told by Ginger episode because when I was a teenager when it was on, I used to suffer from really bad depression and self harm so to me seeing that episode helped a little bit. I got better now obviously but I was in a dark place and it helped to see that even though Ginger wasn't in that dark place herself (that was when she was older) that people still cared and loved her. I used to really love that show and hell I still rewatch it from time to time. It's probably one of the best Teenage drama shows out there and doesn't just go by stereotypical "Oh nuuu the boy i like doesn't like me and the rich girl is sooo mean!" It really broke the norm like Ginger wasn't sure if the nice looking guys she fell for was who she ACTUALLY liked and the rich girl was one of her best friends. It's still to me one of the greatest shows out there and all young teens/girls should still watch it I feel personally.

Anyone remember Horseland, that had some dark episodes. One of the horses became anorexic, that time the old cat wandered off and died, multiple times discussing a horse being put down. It was only dark because the animals talked,but lord.
I instantly thought about those episodes as soon as I read the title haha. I also remember one where one of the girls wanted to win some contest so bad that she pushed her horse to its limits and it nearly died.
5:31- She didn't really get 'bored' exactly; she was late to write a letter to Celestia about a lesson she learned about friendship, and since she didn't do anything that week she was struggling to find a problem to fix with friendship (which is why she hypnotised them into wanting that pony; she wanted the children to fight with each other so she could teach them that sharing is a good part of friendship or whatever) and she kept saying things like 'Time's ticking Twilight! Time! Is! TICKING!' as she only had til sundown to write the letter or she'd miss the deadline. She lost her mind because her obsessiveness over trying to be perfect and have everything done on time took over when she realised she might actually be late, and her friends didn't help her (they thought she was being dramatic and worked up over nothing, and it ended with that being the lesson, so it all worked out). Freaked me out too, tbh. And if she used that she could TOTALLY take over Equestria. They gotta make boundaries. XD
I'm a little disappointed that Party of One wasn't completely on the list. That episode led to an extremely new disturbing kind of Creepypasta and fan's version of episode led it to even darker path.
Tangled the Series is actually one of my favorite cartoons on air at the moment. It’s far from any normal Disney channel cartoon I’ve ever seen and the characters the crew behind it has added in (Varian, Cassandra, etc.) are all wonderful and likable. I would quite enjoy seeing you talk more about the series Strider!

When she burns Cass' hand and the next episode, Cass is mad at her and accidentally erases her memories... Definitely not the darkest moment as it's quite a light hearted joke where they recreate the original movie but boy is it a dark plotline that's carried through to Cass' betrayal and the dream world in the house of yesterday's tomorrow (another episode that could fit well on the list. TTS has a lot of darker storylines than you'd first expect)
As someone who discovered Sailor Moon in high school and only every watched the original Japanese version and I never realized how terrible the English dub was. I’m sorry to everyone who grew up with the original.
I came because of Tangled; its an amazing show, despite what most Disney princess shows are thought destined to be: cheesy and bad. The characters are amazing, and the plot (while still targeted most-specifically at children) is perfectly complex and well thought out. It doesn't just try to milk the original movie (in which I personally didn't particularly like). Sorry, I like to rant about this series when I get the chance. It's great. Awesome video by the way! Though that episode TTS was dark indeed I personally expected Secret of the Sundrop to be on here *SPOILER WARNING (BIG ONE)* It literally has a 14 year old kid who was once considered a friend to Rapunzel snap to the point of unimaginable actions as Rapunzel is forced to watch as her father blatantly ignores the situation (Even when she points out so far they have fell right into Varian's hands) until he realises how truly dangerous this broken teenager is. Raps has to watch as her mother and her best friend are almost crushed to death by a giant robot and her friend be consumed by his grief and hatred. Her mother was kidnapped and to speed up the process of freeing his father from an unshatterable amber he pours the same alchemic substance on the black rocks by her mother that forms the amber as a threat that her mother to will be consumed if raps does not speed up. I could go on but I won't, if that ain't dark i don't know what is :P
Yikes. And actually, that's what really pisses me off about Painter's Block. Punzie couldn't go help him when he came asking for it. Fine, she put her people first. That's completely fine. I believe there was a darker episode of My Life as A Teenaged Robot. I don't remember the title, but it's bone chilling nonetheless. Jenny wants to look like a human due to her not being allowed in a restaurant for being a robot...I believe. So Jenny finds this suit that makes her look like a normal human girl. The dark part doesn't come up until after Jenny goes to sleep. The suit ends up putting itself on Jenny and...starts to talk to her. The suit ends up wanting Jenny to be a human forever by making her always wear it. I don't remember the entire episode, but it did have that human suit.
i think he did a update video on it,basically people found a version of it in another language,and then another with the english audio but in really bad quality,so a guy smashed them together and it's pretty watchable.
A lot of anime/manga aimed at girls can get pretty dark. There's a running trend of villains in various girls shows feeding off concepts rather than things like "life energy" or whatever. For example, the PreCure franchise will often have their villains of the year focus on something like fear, dreams, etc. Villains that can eat your dreams, villains that can inflict apathy upon you, villains that can steal the concept of hope from a person... Granted it's usually pretty saccharine and they rarely explore the implications (aside from PTSD and gender identity a few times), but for the movies and endings they usually dial it up a bit. Heartcatch had the entire world turned to desert as one of the heroines clashed with her mind controlled father and his dark, perverted creation. Suite had the family and friends mind controlled by the villain, who disguised himself as a cute animal to be taken care of by the heroes. And it just goes on from there. And that's just the girl's stuff. The unisex stuff like GeGeGe no Kitaro is downright...hoo boy.
there’s all shoujo anime and then there’s shoujo anime aimed at like, young girls (like precure) cuz like shoujo aimed at older girls can be pretty dark. banana fish is what comes to mind for me.

Tangled the series gets darker. The decay incantation. Varian’s loss of his father. Cassandra’s feeling of betrayal and loathing and abandonment by her mother (gothel) It’s crazy I adore it.
I loved that cartoon as a 14-year old going through many of the same things. Some episodes were outright ridiculous, and her getting and getting over an eating disorder in the same episode is perhaps not the most realistic thing to happen, but I still respect it for tackling relevant subjects in a more grounded way than most other shows aimed at young girls.
@Tatiana Bezerra The porn episode wasn't even the most shocking one. There were two episodes that involved underage drinking, one where a 17 year old boy tried to get Sharon drunk (and was hitting on her). The other was a roadie for her dad's band (you know, an adult) inviting her out to a backalley party during her dad's gig and getting her drunk.
There was this one episode in Bratz were Jade was tied down (I think tied) on a conveyor belt and almost turned into dog food There was another where one almost got shot in the heart with an arrow but her pin saved her A lot of this show was unsettling at times
The Cutie Map is darker given it centers on a cult that brainwashes ponies. They weren't sent to a different universe in Sailor Moon, the Silver Crystal basically reset their lives to the point before they got involved in the fight.
For me, the most darkest and depressing girl show is Madoka Magica. After finishing the movie, I was so depressed that I had to cure it by watching Kiniro Mosaic.
Laxmi Krishna Shrestha I think this video is more about shows that are meant for children (specifically girls) that have abnormally frightening episodes. Although I agree with you that Madoka is very dark, it is definitely not for kids, so I don’t think it can be counted in the same category.
I'm a guy and I watched that when I was 19 I believe. And it still had moments that just completely unnerved me. I recall vividly the episode where a powerful witch compels everyone to wander like zombies to an abandoned warehouse and mix a bunch of detergents together with the intention of drinking it and killing themselves. I think the show overall was a deconstruction of your typical "magical girl" anime where they just get their powers from nothing, become super popular and everything works out for them. Brilliant show.

In the Japanese Dub of Sailor Moon, it's stated that the Sailor Scouts and Tuxedo Mask were reborn on Earth with their memories erased due to the Silver Crystal. Luna held their memories, while Mamoru's love for Usagi caused a split and separate persona to manifest in order to protect her. It's bizarre, but he is literally Earth's Guardian, so he is a powerful dude.

"he is tuxedo mask i don't believe it" - The funniest/dumbest line i could remember. and you'll probably get these as well later on, but the reason we got the cop out ending was because Toei wanted more Sailor Moon and the manga story line at that point actually ended with their deaths, memory is a bit fuzzy on the details but i think you can find it in the TVtropes trivia page. either way we got more episode from it even if the filler arc that followed that episode was kinda meh.

Twilight was not simply bored. She was pressured because she thought she needed to send a letter to Celestia regarding a friendship lesson. The pressure slowly got rid of her sanity and she decided she needed to make a problem since there were no problems to solve. In the end when Celestia comes to Ponyville and fixes everything, she is then told that Twilight misunderstood what her responsibility was.
Wait so you put the episode where Twilight goes crazy, and not the episode with the cult! Our town was a really creepy song, and the atmosphere was scary.
I know it’s not a girls cartoon, but you should seriously watch TMNT 2012 as it has SO MANY dark episodes. One has the team slowly infected with a parasite which devours their minds, another has an alien-style episode with mutant squirrels, and I think the worst was Buried Secrets...yeesh. That episode scared me. But what hit me the most was the Mutant Apocalypse trilogy in season 5. It’s set in an apocalyptic future where the team has been separated by a huge mutagen bomb and only Raphael and Donatello make it out alive. The turtles are in their 40-50s, and Raphael has given up all hope and likely suffers from depression. You really should watch it, it’s such a depressing yet gripping trilogy with such an unexpected ending.
Yes, DiC may have butchered the Sailor Moon ending but think of the backlash if they hadn't. The show was aimed at kids and then suddenly at the end there these tragic, jarring death scenes that if they didn't upset the kids would have upset adults.
Agreed. And to be honest, I tried to like the Viz because everyone wants me to by force, but I just can't. I just can't. I can't get into the Viz dub myself. And I know I'm suppose to unwillingly because I'm suppose to do what they say.

As another poster mentioned they were able to see the uncensored version but to appease the censors, and parents, DiC butchered the ending when it was shown in the US. Heck, DiC has managed to butcher nearly every anime they show in the US to comply to censors. Which to me does bite that in my country, the US, to protect young kids things have to be censored to shield them from death and violence and uncomfortable conversations. With the exception of the news. The news is fine as is.
I'm gonna be honest... THOSE DANG BRATS MOVIES ARE EXTREMELY SCARY! AS A CHILD, I HAD ONE OF THEM ON DVD, BUT I WAS LITERALLY *TERRIFIED* OF IT. However, I recently re-watched it and I was only slightly disturbed, so maybe it was because I was just a scared little kid idk.
Oof, I own a DVD where they're sleeping over at one of their houses and told scary stories. They were all kids in this. Tbh, they actually were kinda creepy because of the animating style and such.

This hit me kind of hard especially the ginger part depression is a serious thing and should never be taken as something that can just be brushed off. And the fact that people can label each other and make it true is absolutely true and it’s crazy to actually see it happen. Words are powerful in both the good and the bad.
Actually lesson zero was about how twilight didn't have a friendship lesson to right about so she panics and her friends don't take her serious so she kept panicking and decided to make her own friendship problem but then it get out of her control.
That My Little Pony episode is one of my personal favourites of the series because I felt it portrayed anxiety quite well. Lots of traits that Twilight had gone through I could relate with: thinking that people will hate you, fearing the worst scenarios out of the smallest things, constantly saying "what if, what if", thinking the worst of yourself when you make a mistake or are about to make a mistake. It depends on every person and how severe it can be, obviously, but that's through my experiences. Yeah, it was a comedic episode, but the emotions that Twilight was going through were true and it led to dangerous results. It also had a good message that the rest of the Mane 6 had to learn: even if someone is freaking out about something small, telling them that "it's no big deal" won't solve it. They should have helped her with her emotions and confront the problem properly, which is a message towards helping those with anxiety.
Everything after Winx season 5 is garbage. And that's a stretch. I mostly liked season 5 because of Harmonix/Sirenix and Bloom/Sky plot in the first 10 episodes.
9:35 ok but all things considered, that could be a relatively painful death. Imagine being forced to constantly move without food, water, or rest for even just a second, all while overly happy music plays in the background almost mocking you. Miraculous Ladybug: Style Queen, Queen Wasp, Sandboy, and Zombiezou. In these episodes we find out that Gabriel’s wife is not missing at all, he is just preserving her body in some kind of pod in the basement, hiding her from everyone even his own son, people’s nightmares come to life, (including a creepy-doll sort of version of Adrien and an evil Ladybug) and the villain zombiezou kisses people turning them into zombies who forcefully make out with people and stuff like that. These may not be super dark in themselves, but for Miraculous Ladybug? Oh yeah.

Girl's anime or not, I loved watching Sailor Moon when I was growing up. It was later, as a teen with internet access, that I found out how _hard_ DiC butchered the series for American audiences. I was pretty pissed already at that, but it got worse when I found out what they did to the finale.
people have a right for different opinions. some love sailor moon, some think it's okay and some hate it. for me it's guilty pleasure. I understand why there are some haters, because it can be melodramatic and childish and there are now better magical girl-shows like PRETTY CURE KICKASS! but sailor moon is kind of like my silly ex, with whom things didn't work but we're still friends. we laughed, cried, hoorayed and kicked ass. and I still secretly go fan girl-mode when sailor moon is mentioned.
Same, I recently watched the Japenese version of those episodes along with the English version (they were side-by-side while the Japenese audio was playing) and in the original, they had just gotten to Ami's (or Amy's) death and the English episode was already at Tuxedo Mask's. They cut out A LOT.
I hated that they cut out so much from the original dub, and then completely scrapping the final season all together. Really sad that they JUST NOW are finally finishing the original series.

I consider “Queen for a Day” from Tangled the darkest episode of the series. Pascal seemingly sacrificing himself, the king and queen almost dying, a blizzard that threatens genocide on Corona, and Varian losing his father and then turning to the dark side really hit me. It’s the episode that got me invested in the show and it was chilling and dark for a kids cartoon.
Darkest girl cartoon I've seen I saw as a kid. I've tried finding it again, and the closest I've gotten is that some told me that it's probably based on a fairly tale from somewhere in Europe as some said it sounded familiar. I don't remember the style, so it could have been an anime adaptation for all I know as the characters were pretty tall. But I remember surprisingly a lot from something I saw when I was about 5 despite it being 21 years ago. Synopsis: A beautiful girl is wandering on her own and meets a guy and they fall in love. Surprise, the guy was a prince and they get married. His mother pretends to be happy but didn't want her son to get married. 9 months later the girl gives birth and the queen acts like midwife. Secretly she throws the child into the moat and says it was stillbirth. The young couple are devastated, and tries again, but every time the queen throws the child into the moat. 7 years or at least 7 children later the girl can't handle it anymore and demands a divorce he refuses and she runs to the moat to probably drown herself. There they see all the children, somehow all still babies, having been raised by the frogs the last 7 years. Now they realize what must have happened, but they don't have any proof. So they sneak in with the babies and the prince start talking to his mother. (these are translations, I watched the Norwegian dub) "What would you do if someone drowned 7 royal children?" he asks her. "Tie each of their limbs to a wild horse each, and then release them on a field" she replies. Then the curtain opens, and there the girl stands with all the children in her arms. "That can't be! How are they still alive?! I thought I threw them into the moat!" or something the queen says. Then it goes to the next morning, one see 4 knights tie her limbs to a horse each, a gate opens, and then it fades to black while she screams and the prince, the girl, and the children look happily at it... Y'know, for kids! How not anyone heard the children playing in the moat or how anyone didn't age is beyond me... I even found it weird as a 5-year-old...
Wow, that's pretty messed up. That story reminds me of that Hungarian folk tale channel, since the folk tales have recurring themes of parents killing babies and the weird punishments of getting tied to a horse.

the physiological horor has always been common place in cartoons aimed at girls because you can't kidnapped the main character. Guy cartoons you can just kidnap a sister or girl secondary character. Also talking about emotions in a guy cartoon was taboo, and still has a tendency to be.
Its so sad that we live in a world where boys of all ages are told they shouldn't have emotions. That kinda crap is so detrimental to young boys and they grow up believing it. If they show them there're ostracized and told that They are crazy or being childish. That isn't just other men telling them that either. I've seen moms, girlfriends, grandmas,female nurses and doctors etc. tell them that that.These are people who should be enforcing feelings. Instead they are just told they aren't being a man. Its sad...

Slight correction: Twilight did NOT start that fiasco because of boredom. She enchants the doll because she hadn't turned in a lesson to Princess Celestia and was literally TERRIFIED that Celestia would disown her as a student; she tried to talk to her friends about it but they just laughed her worries away. It's been shown repeatedly that Twilight has a crippling fear of disappointing others, especially her mentor, and that fear is a major factor in a lot of her character's conflict. I feel like it does a disservice to Twilight's character (and people who have similar issues) reduce that fear to simple boredom.
I think most people have a fear of being a disappointment, especially to those they care about.

Another dark episode in "girl cartoons" is winx at the end of season 4. Layla/Aisha's fiance literally dies and she sides with evil to seek vigilante justice. You could see her go through the stages of grief. I was like 13 at the time and it broke my heart to see my favorite character at the time loose her soul mate in such a way.

I think that was the first time the winx experienced betrayal without the help of magic. when episode 25 of season 4 aired I was actually surprised they went that far to have a betrayal that actually helps the plot. and it confirmed a theory that I had,fairies need to use emotions to use their powers but too much can cause the magic to go wacky

With Twilight, she wasn't unhinged due to boredom, but because she felt an overwhelming obligation to her mentor and went way over the edge with her imagined consequences and the fear she has of letting the princess down. Personally, MLP has several dark episodes, IMO. Not an easy task for a TV-Y show.

What about that episode of the Powerpuff Girls where the girls run so fast, they time travel into the future and Townsville is like a post apocalyptic wasteland. Everyone in the town blames them for it and I remember it being really dark. Also the episode with the dead magician who brain washes Blossom into being thrown in a coffin full of spikes. I don't remember much from that one, but I know a lot of people consider it dark.

If you like strong female characters show then 'claymore' is an animated show which have many strong females in it. Story is thrilling, intense and horrifying. (Well I did not watch it because of male/female topic though.)

The reason Twilight Sparkle went crazy in "Lesson Zero" was because she was under the impression that *she* had to write a letter to Princess Celestia every single episode. There weren't any lessons to be learned or something to write about, so she was afraid that she was going to be taken away from her friends. The episode was written so that the focus of the series could shift to the other ponies, since, up until that point, it was all about Twilight and the lessons she was learning by being on Equestria.

I think what it is is that a lot of these shows when they were being originally made had more restrictions on what could and couldn’t be shown since they were aimed at girls so any horror elements they had to show any more psychological sense rather than a blood guts and gore sense. And while more modern TV shows don’t have the same strict code for what can and can’t be shown it’s become kind of a staple of the genre.
Winx club scared me. Remember the episode where the girls had to chose between their personal wants or saving...something(I forgot what is was)? Musa had to decide between bringing her mom back to life. And and stella had to decide between losing her beauty. It doesn't sound scary, but the way the "ugly" stella looked was unsettling. She just had beedy eyes like a doll. Also, a lot of the ways the girls gained enchantix was unsettling too. Like I think aisha (or layla) lost her eyesight and techna sacrificed herself to save a planet (she came back to life after a couple of episode, and aisha got her vision back eventually but still). Or something like that, I can't remember.

I think you missed the entire point of the MLP episode. Twilight didn't get BORED and just suddenly start causing mayhem, she was on a deadline and snapped due to her fear of failure of not being able to turn in a friendship report to Celestia on time. This is something all women face all the time and usually when our darker sides come out. We are under so much pressure all the time to be as close to perfect and reliable as humanly possible, and sometimes events outside of our own control prevents us from keeping up that persona. That's what the episode is about, instead of panicking, feeling lost, and resorting to desperate measures, sometimes we need to be able to take a breath and say "its okay, this isn't normal, but for this 1 time it'll be okay." Also it shows how power is power and does whatever it needs to, its up to the welder's intentions that make power good or evil and if one is to have power one must always be in charge of their own intentions.
Also, Twilight tried talking with her friends about her fear of not being able to deliver the friendship report and they scoffed it. Twilight was left alone, to fester in her own paranoid illusions that she would fail her deadline and be expelled from Celestia's school.
As someone in College when I first watched that episode, it's very relatable. Sometimes you have deadlines and things outside of your control will set you back or even make you fail.

As a former Bratz obsessed child, it has some pretty dark parts. I'll never forget 'Bratz Go To Paris', where Cloe and Jade not only get poisoned but launched off a cliff in a car with no functioning brakes! Not only is the villain poisoning supermodels, she goes out of her way to try and kill two of the Bratz (who are obviously saved before their gorey demise, without first zooming in on their screaming faces!). Rewatching, it's certainly not a great show by any means, but it didn't stop me being obsessed, lmao.

Honestly, that's nothing compared to the anorexia episode. Braceface is a pretty terrible show seeing as Sharon is an insufferable main character but, it covered some pretty serious and real issues and topics.

Season 3's "Tecna's Sacrifice" or "Point of No Return" was a bit brutal

Season 3 revolved around Enchantix, which required a fairy to sacrifice themselves for their home planet.
In the episode there was a portal to the Omega Dimension that was gonna destroy the planet it was on as well as where it led to. And whoever closed it would practically never come back. And as the Nick dub title said, Tecna chose to sacrifice herself to close the portal and therefore being stuck in the Omega Dimension for a while. It was devastating not just for the characters, but to watch as a viewer
I knew Tecna did come back seeing as I watched Seasons 4-6 beforehand, but honestly I missed Tecna for that short moment that she was gone. She's my favorite character, and y' can't just let your favorite character almost dissapear like that, right?
It's kinda more depressing thinking about what if she never came back.

I think this was because, well.. I don't like friendship and peace; I enjoy gore, unsurprisingly. To be honest, I don't know how Mom didn't see this coming; her fourteen year old daughter, enjoying things like DanganRonpa and Corpse Party, I honestly don't. Anyway, I honestly regret being born in 2004, because Winx was the worst, in my opinion... On the other hand, I got something good out of my birth year: Mean Girls._
Some dark alternatives for the Tangled and MLP episodes you chose that I’d recommend you looking into if you haven’t yet, are ‘Pascal’s Story’, which explores Rapunzel’s pet chameleon, Pascal’s surprisingly depressing origin story of how he wound up in Rapunzel’s tower after barely escaping the snake that ate his mother when he was still a hatchling, while also delving into some pretty hard to watch PTSD on Rap’s part as she ends up back at the now abandoned and disheveled tower after he goes missing. It was such a dark and emotional episode, but I think it provided such an important step in the continuation of Rapunzel’s story, that we got to see how the deceit and isolation of her past still affects her even when you think she’s moved on.
Another dark MLP episode would be one of the season finales, ‘Twilight’s Kingdom’ where this powerful and imposing beast from the literal UNDERWORLD named Lord Tirek appears and starts draining each of the ponies of their talents and abilities to gain power over Equestria, dethroning each of the Alicorns and even destroying Twilight’s own home in the process. The episode even features one of the most intense fight scenes ever to appear in a children’s cartoon as Twilight and Tirek duke it out- fighting each other in a desolate wasteland with pure, Earth shattering magic alone.
It’s just absolute insanity, and it definitely deserved a spot.
And lesson 0 is like party of 1, but with twilight instead of pinkie
I feel like there’s probably a few more from MLP too (it is 8 seasons now, after all). There’s Starlight’s village (and also that episode where she mind controls the mane six after already becoming their friend, suggesting sociopathy), Trixie attempting suicide briefly, Luna hurting herself due to depression, season 8 dealing with racism (speciesism), and Cozy Glow herself as a villain, the episode where Twilight visits alternate futures created by Starlight where villains have won (eg Sombra’s victory involving everyone being at war with the Crystal ponies as slaves), etc.
Hell yeah. Tirek tricked flippin' DISCORD into thinking they were friends, convinced him to catch Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, even FLUTTERSHY, and then immediately revealed that their "friendship" was a total scam, and proceeded to drain HIM of his chaos-powers. (Obviously. Where would cartoons even BE without some villain-to-villain betrayal?) Although personally in MY opinion the darkest MLP episode is "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep" in which a parasite of pure darkness starts taking over the Mane Six's nightmares. Rainbow Dash says that it's not that big of a deal, they'll just be tired, and then Princess Luna explains that if it gains power, it'll infect the real world. The episode ends with them discovering that if Luna forgives herself for becoming Nightmare Moon, the monster will lose it's power. This doesn't stop her from having a hard time with it, though.
Yeah my sister was watching that episode on tv and when I looked at the screen I couldn't believe MLP of all things went the DBZ way. Needless to say I greatly underestimated that show
I think mind control is a prevalent theme in what is considered girl-aimed cartoons because of the constant threat of being manipulated. A lot of times families, communities, and societies constantly try to manipulate or even control women. Whether it's through traditional versus non-traditional gender roles, aspects of personal value and duty toward a religion, or simply in one's sexual openness preference.

The Earth Maiden one is a sacred bead. Not a number 9. The sacred bead seems to be a reoccurring theme in lots of anime. It's kind of like a talisman or spiritual artifact. At least that's what I recall it being called... there probably is a better name for it.

Hey Stirider! I just wanted to mention the two main messages of MLP:FiM Lesson Zero. Twilight isn't just bored when she goes insane, she's had a strict schedule that's she never deviated from. She's terrified that some kind of horrible repercussion will come if she doesn't meet her deadline for that week's "friendship lesson". Additionally, all of her friends mock her concerns and basically tell her that she's being crazy and ridiculous. At the end when Celestia arrives and fixes everything she reprimands the others for treating Twilight's concerns as nothing. She also admits that she may have put too much pressure on Twilight to complete these things herself. The major points of that episode were 1) Worrying and panicking over nothing is a fast way to cause yourself more problems than you had before and 2) Don't treat your friends concerns as nothing just because you think they're nothing. I really like this episode because, to me, it showed how mental illness can be marginalized by people who don't understand. Twilight clearly demonstrates a form of OCD in this episode and it gets brushed aside because "Oh it just isn't important because you're overreacting to something stupid". Her friends then learn that they were wrong and later in the show these lessons linger. It's more than just "Twilight was bored and went nuts". Hopefully you see this. Love your vids!

I used to really relate to that As Told by Ginger episode because when I was a teenager when it was on, I used to suffer from really bad depression and self harm so to me seeing that episode helped a little bit. I got better now obviously but I was in a dark place and it helped to see that even though Ginger wasn't in that dark place herself (that was when she was older) that people still cared and loved her. I used to really love that show and hell I still rewatch it from time to time. It's probably one of the best Teenage drama shows out there and doesn't just go by stereotypical "Oh nuuu the boy i like doesn't like me and the rich girl is sooo mean!" It really broke the norm like Ginger wasn't sure if the nice looking guys she fell for was who she ACTUALLY liked and the rich girl was one of her best friends. It's still to me one of the greatest shows out there and all young teens/girls should still watch it I feel personally.

Anyone remember Horseland, that had some dark episodes. One of the horses became anorexic, that time the old cat wandered off and died, multiple times discussing a horse being put down. It was only dark because the animals talked,but lord.
Horseland taught a lot of good lessons that I still listen to 8 years later
I instantly thought about those episodes as soon as I read the title haha. I also remember one where one of the girls wanted to win some contest so bad that she pushed her horse to its limits and it nearly died.

5:31- She didn't really get 'bored' exactly; she was late to write a letter to Celestia about a lesson she learned about friendship, and since she didn't do anything that week she was struggling to find a problem to fix with friendship (which is why she hypnotised them into wanting that pony; she wanted the children to fight with each other so she could teach them that sharing is a good part of friendship or whatever) and she kept saying things like 'Time's ticking Twilight! Time! Is! TICKING!' as she only had til sundown to write the letter or she'd miss the deadline. She lost her mind because her obsessiveness over trying to be perfect and have everything done on time took over when she realised she might actually be late, and her friends didn't help her (they thought she was being dramatic and worked up over nothing, and it ended with that being the lesson, so it all worked out). Freaked me out too, tbh. And if she used that she could TOTALLY take over Equestria. They gotta make boundaries. XD

It’s far from any normal Disney channel cartoon I’ve ever seen and the characters the crew behind it has added in (Varian, Cassandra, etc.) are all wonderful and likable. When she burns Cass' hand and the next episode, Cass is mad at her and accidentally erases her memories... Definitely not the darkest moment as it's quite a light hearted joke where they recreate the original movie but boy is it a dark plotline that's carried through to Cass' betrayal and the dream world in the house of yesterday's tomorrow (another episode that could fit well on the list. TTS has a lot of darker storylines than you'd first expect)
As someone who discovered Sailor Moon in high school and only every watched the original Japanese version and I never realized how terrible the English dub was. I’m sorry to everyone who grew up with the original.

R was the worst for me, with all the scratchy, off key screaming dub Usagi did trying to match the original.
I came because of Tangled; its an amazing show, despite what most Disney princess shows are thought destined to be: cheesy and bad. The characters are amazing, and the plot (while still targeted most-specifically at children) is perfectly complex and well thought out. It doesn't just try to milk the original movie (in which I personally didn't particularly like). Sorry, I like to rant about this series when I get the chance. It's great.

*SPOILER WARNING (BIG ONE)* It literally has a 14 year old kid who was once considered a friend to Rapunzel snap to the point of unimaginable actions as Rapunzel is forced to watch as her father blatantly ignores the situation (Even when she points out so far they have fell right into Varian's hands) until he realises how truly dangerous this broken teenager is. Raps has to watch as her mother and her best friend are almost crushed to death by a giant robot and her friend be consumed by his grief and hatred. Her mother was kidnapped and to speed up the process of freeing his father from an unshatterable amber he pours the same alchemic substance on the black rocks by her mother that forms the amber as a threat that her mother to will be consumed if raps does not speed up.
I could go on but I won't, if that ain't dark i don't know what is :P

I believe there was a darker episode of My Life as A Teenaged Robot. I don't remember the title, but it's bone chilling nonetheless.
Jenny wants to look like a human due to her not being allowed in a restaurant for being a robot...I believe. So Jenny finds this suit that makes her look like a normal human girl.
The dark part doesn't come up until after Jenny goes to sleep. The suit ends up putting itself on Jenny and...starts to talk to her.
The suit ends up wanting Jenny to be a human forever by making her always wear it.
I don't remember the entire episode, but it did have that human suit.

A lot of anime/manga aimed at girls can get pretty dark.
There's a running trend of villains in various girls shows feeding off concepts rather than things like "life energy" or whatever.
For example, the PreCure franchise will often have their villains of the year focus on something like fear, dreams, etc. Villains that can eat your dreams, villains that can inflict apathy upon you, villains that can steal the concept of hope from a person...
Granted it's usually pretty saccharine and they rarely explore the implications (aside from PTSD and gender identity a few times), but for the movies and endings they usually dial it up a bit. Heartcatch had the entire world turned to desert as one of the heroines clashed with her mind controlled father and his dark, perverted creation. Suite had the family and friends mind controlled by the villain, who disguised himself as a cute animal to be taken care of by the heroes. And it just goes on from there.
And that's just the girl's stuff. The unisex stuff like GeGeGe no Kitaro is downright...hoo boy.

Looking back on weird and controversial topics in cartoons are honestly fun to explore!To try to understand the messages or purposes behind them.
Tangled the series gets darker. The decay incantation. Varian’s loss of his father. Cassandra’s feeling of betrayal and loathing and abandonment by her mother (gothel) It’s crazy I adore it.
The part I found the darkest was Varian’s turn to the dark side and quest for vengeance.
Those scenes don't even hold a candle compared to Zhan Tiri's monster form.

I'm honestly surprised that I've never heard Braceface before. Any show aimed at young kids covering those subjects is so, so important.
I loved that cartoon as a 14-year old going through many of the same things. Some episodes were outright ridiculous, and her getting and getting over an eating disorder in the same episode is perhaps not the most realistic thing to happen, but I still respect it for tackling relevant subjects in a more grounded way than most other shows aimed at young girls.

There were two episodes that involved underage drinking, one where a 17 year old boy tried to get Sharon drunk (and was hitting on her). The other was a roadie for her dad's band (you know, an adult) inviting her out to a backalley party during her dad's gig and getting her drunk.
There was this one episode in Bratz were Jade was tied down (I think tied) on a conveyor belt and almost turned into dog food
There was another where one almost got shot in the heart with an arrow but her pin saved her
A lot of this show was unsettling at times

They weren't sent to a different universe in Sailor Moon, the Silver Crystal basically reset their lives to the point before they got involved in the fight.

For me, the most darkest and depressing girl show is Madoka Magica. After finishing the movie, I was so depressed that I had to cure it by watching Kiniro Mosaic.
Laxmi Krishna Shrestha I think this video is more about shows that are meant for children (specifically girls) that have abnormally frightening episodes. Although I agree with you that Madoka is very dark, it is definitely not for kids, so I don’t think it can be counted in the same category.
I'm a guy and I watched that when I was 19 I believe. And it still had moments that just completely unnerved me. I recall vividly the episode where a powerful witch compels everyone to wander like zombies to an abandoned warehouse and mix a bunch of detergents together with the intention of drinking it and killing themselves. I think the show overall was a deconstruction of your typical "magical girl" anime where they just get their powers from nothing, become super popular and everything works out for them. Brilliant show.

In the Japanese Dub of Sailor Moon, it's stated that the Sailor Scouts and Tuxedo Mask were reborn on Earth with their memories erased due to the Silver Crystal. Luna held their memories, while Mamoru's love for Usagi caused a split and separate persona to manifest in order to protect her. It's bizarre, but he is literally Earth's Guardian, so he is a powerful dude.

and you'll probably get these as well later on, but the reason we got the cop out ending was because Toei wanted more Sailor Moon and the manga story line at that point actually ended with their deaths, memory is a bit fuzzy on the details but i think you can find it in the TVtropes trivia page. either way we got more episode from it even if the filler arc that followed that episode was kinda meh.

Twilight was not simply bored. She was pressured because she thought she needed to send a letter to Celestia regarding a friendship lesson.
The pressure slowly got rid of her sanity and she decided she needed to make a problem since there were no problems to solve.
In the end when Celestia comes to Ponyville and fixes everything, she is then told that Twilight misunderstood what her responsibility was.
The Sailor Moon episode reminds me of this anime i don’t know if you’re heard of it, it’s called “ Puella Magi Madoka Magika”

I know it’s not a girls cartoon, but you should seriously watch TMNT 2012 as it has SO MANY dark episodes. One has the team slowly infected with a parasite which devours their minds, another has an alien-style episode with mutant squirrels, and I think the worst was Buried Secrets...yeesh. That episode scared me.
But what hit me the most was the Mutant Apocalypse trilogy in season 5. It’s set in an apocalyptic future where the team has been separated by a huge mutagen bomb and only Raphael and Donatello make it out alive. The turtles are in their 40-50s, and Raphael has given up all hope and likely suffers from depression. You really should watch it, it’s such a depressing yet gripping trilogy with such an unexpected ending.

Yes, DiC may have butchered the Sailor Moon ending but think of the backlash if they hadn't. The show was aimed at kids and then suddenly at the end there these tragic, jarring death scenes that if they didn't upset the kids would have upset adults.
Agreed. And to be honest, I tried to like the Viz because everyone wants me to by force, but I just can't. I just can't. I can't get into the Viz dub myself. And I know I'm suppose to unwillingly because I'm suppose to do what they say.
It aired as is in Italy and that caused no uproar (it took the Sailor Starlights to do that).

As another poster mentioned they were able to see the uncensored version but to appease the censors, and parents, DiC butchered the ending when it was shown in the US. Heck, DiC has managed to butcher nearly every anime they show in the US to comply to censors. Which to me does bite that in my country, the US, to protect young kids things have to be censored to shield them from death and violence and uncomfortable conversations. With the exception of the news. The news is fine as is.

However, I recently re-watched it and I was only slightly disturbed, so maybe it was because I was just a scared little kid idk.
Oof, I own a DVD where they're sleeping over at one of their houses and told scary stories. They were all kids in this. Tbh, they actually were kinda creepy because of the animating style and such.

This hit me kind of hard especially the ginger part depression is a serious thing and should never be taken as something that can just be brushed off. And the fact that people can label each other and make it true is absolutely true and it’s crazy to actually see it happen. Words are powerful in both the good and the bad.

Actually lesson zero was about how twilight didn't have a friendship lesson to right about so she panics and her friends don't take her serious so she kept panicking and decided to make her own friendship problem but then it get out of her control.

That My Little Pony episode is one of my personal favourites of the series because I felt it portrayed anxiety quite well. Lots of traits that Twilight had gone through I could relate with: thinking that people will hate you, fearing the worst scenarios out of the smallest things, constantly saying "what if, what if", thinking the worst of yourself when you make a mistake or are about to make a mistake. It depends on every person and how severe it can be, obviously, but that's through my experiences. Yeah, it was a comedic episode, but the emotions that Twilight was going through were true and it led to dangerous results.
It also had a good message that the rest of the Mane 6 had to learn: even if someone is freaking out about something small, telling them that "it's no big deal" won't solve it. They should have helped her with her emotions and confront the problem properly, which is a message towards helping those with anxiety.
Winx Club is one of my favorite girl cartoon, and I really liked that in the old seasons they weren't afraid to go to dark territory
But for boys who have a chance to watch Winx Club, that's just an excuse.
Everything after Winx season 5 is garbage. And that's a stretch. I mostly liked season 5 because of Harmonix/Sirenix and Bloom/Sky plot in the first 10 episodes.

Miraculous Ladybug: Style Queen, Queen Wasp, Sandboy, and Zombiezou. In these episodes we find out that Gabriel’s wife is not missing at all, he is just preserving her body in some kind of pod in the basement, hiding her from everyone even his own son, people’s nightmares come to life, (including a creepy-doll sort of version of Adrien and an evil Ladybug) and the villain zombiezou kisses people turning them into zombies who forcefully make out with people and stuff like that. These may not be super dark in themselves, but for Miraculous Ladybug? Oh yeah.

Girl's anime or not, I loved watching Sailor Moon when I was growing up. It was later, as a teen with internet access, that I found out how _hard_ DiC butchered the series for American audiences.
I was pretty pissed already at that, but it got worse when I found out what they did to the finale.
I never watched the old English dub. I watched the original Japanese version. Oof.
people have a right for different opinions. some love sailor moon, some think it's okay and some hate it. for me it's guilty pleasure. I understand why there are some haters, because it can be melodramatic and childish and there are now better magical girl-shows like PRETTY CURE KICKASS! but sailor moon is kind of like my silly ex, with whom things didn't work but we're still friends. we laughed, cried, hoorayed and kicked ass. and I still secretly go fan girl-mode when sailor moon is mentioned.
Same, I recently watched the Japenese version of those episodes along with the English version (they were side-by-side while the Japenese audio was playing) and in the original, they had just gotten to Ami's (or Amy's) death and the English episode was already at Tuxedo Mask's. They cut out A LOT.
I hated that they cut out so much from the original dub, and then completely scrapping the final season all together. Really sad that they JUST NOW are finally finishing the original series.
The death scenes of each girl were some of the scariest moments in Sailor Moon.

I consider “Queen for a Day” from Tangled the darkest episode of the series. Pascal seemingly sacrificing himself, the king and queen almost dying, a blizzard that threatens genocide on Corona, and Varian losing his father and then turning to the dark side really hit me. It’s the episode that got me invested in the show and it was chilling and dark for a kids cartoon.
Darkest girl cartoon I've seen I saw as a kid. I've tried finding it again, and the closest I've gotten is that some told me that it's probably based on a fairly tale from somewhere in Europe as some said it sounded familiar. I don't remember the style, so it could have been an anime adaptation for all I know as the characters were pretty tall. But I remember surprisingly a lot from something I saw when I was about 5 despite it being 21 years ago.
Synopsis: A beautiful girl is wandering on her own and meets a guy and they fall in love. Surprise, the guy was a prince and they get married. His mother pretends to be happy but didn't want her son to get married. 9 months later the girl gives birth and the queen acts like midwife. Secretly she throws the child into the moat and says it was stillbirth. The young couple are devastated, and tries again, but every time the queen throws the child into the moat. 7 years or at least 7 children later the girl can't handle it anymore and demands a divorce he refuses and she runs to the moat to probably drown herself. There they see all the children, somehow all still babies, having been raised by the frogs the last 7 years. Now they realize what must have happened, but they don't have any proof. So they sneak in with the babies and the prince start talking to his mother.
(these are translations, I watched the Norwegian dub)
"What would you do if someone drowned 7 royal children?" he asks her.
"Tie each of their limbs to a wild horse each, and then release them on a field" she replies.
Then the curtain opens, and there the girl stands with all the children in her arms.
"That can't be! How are they still alive?! I thought I threw them into the moat!" or something the queen says.
Then it goes to the next morning, one see 4 knights tie her limbs to a horse each, a gate opens, and then it fades to black while she screams and the prince, the girl, and the children look happily at it...
Y'know, for kids! How not anyone heard the children playing in the moat or how anyone didn't age is beyond me... I even found it weird as a 5-year-old...
Wow, that's pretty messed up. That story reminds me of that Hungarian folk tale channel, since the folk tales have recurring themes of parents killing babies and the weird punishments of getting tied to a horse.

the physiological horor has always been common place in cartoons aimed at girls because you can't kidnapped the main character. Guy cartoons you can just kidnap a sister or girl secondary character. Also talking about emotions in a guy cartoon was taboo, and still has a tendency to be.
Its so sad that we live in a world where boys of all ages are told they shouldn't have emotions. That kinda crap is so detrimental to young boys and they grow up believing it. If they show them there're ostracized and told that They are crazy or being childish. That isn't just other men telling them that either. I've seen moms, girlfriends, grandmas,female nurses and doctors etc. tell them that that.These are people who should be enforcing feelings. Instead they are just told they aren't being a man. Its sad...
