We lost our redbone of 9 years about a month ago. It was so sudden. I miss her so much. We found a litter of redbones that were born accidentally, and in 2 days I'm driving up to get a beautiful boy redbone with black markings. (Redbones with black markings are rarely adopted and sometimes killed) No little guy can replace my other redbone, but I want to give him all my love and care for him as best as I can.

My Redbone Coonhound, Cleatus Humperdink, died in my arms on March 27, 2021. He was 12 years old. He was a rescue puppy, and had the sweetest disposition of any dog I have ever had. I loved his howling, and his energy. He was my son, and slept at my feet on the bed since I brought him home at 4 months of age. He was gentle, affectionate, protective, intelligent, strong, happy, and very loving. He loved all my other dog and cat rescues. He never chased the cats, but loved to be chased by his older Lab brothers. He was very swift, and led me on a merry chase a few times when he got loose.
Unfortunately, the last several years he battled mast cell tumors, and just had three of them removed two weeks before he died. I believe he developed some sort of tumor that ruptured inside that caused his death. It’s been two months, but I still feel the loss tremendously. I loved my Cleatus so very much.

Wow Merry Hineline, you just explained my redbone coonhound Miley she is 9years old now and she just got back to health from pyometra infection and surgery, but the place where she got the surgery done was supposed to give her enough iv fluids to flush out the anesthesia and they didn't do it, and she was in acute kidney failure and severe anemia because of it,3 vet visits 1 emergency vet visit, and 3 trying to get me to put her to sleep said she would die from the kidney failure and I was just trying to explain it was acute kidney failure not chronic kidney failure, because she could heal from acute but not chronic, and she was vomiting everything I was forcing honey and sugar water and some light peach syrup and juice, to help her with energy from her not eating, and she would just vomit most of food up, so I was out of $ because I had just had spinal surgery on my neck and back and I had to use everything I had saved for the surgery and I turned to Facebook and a lady named Jenn from Paws vet care center and wildlife rehabilitation center in pasco county Florida who sent me a message saying that she was the manager/ director there, and she would do anything she could to help save her life and she picked up miley and she gave her iv fluids and nutrients and medicines for vomiting and nausea shots and pills for nausea and gave me some prescription dogfood for kidney/ renal diet food, and potassium k supplements and antibiotics for her surgery and in 3 days my baby girl was doing so much better she was eating more without vomiting and her kidneys were functioning properly again, her blood work was also almost back to normal in 3days and she did everything for her for free, im forever grateful to Jenn and the staff at Paws vet care center and wildlife rehabilitation center, for saving miley because they care more about the animals than $, so anyone who needs to take their animals to a vet care center that is cheaper than anyone else and they care, about saving them not about the $ its animal abuse to allow them to die because they are charging 800$ for iv fluids that only cost less than 20dollars for a day of fluids. I wish I could hit the lottery and start a nonprofit rescue organization, and vet care center for people who have pets and love them and give them a good life and home, but they can't afford to pay for the expensive vet bills, I would help them who qualify, and I would give credit to them or if they are able to help volunteer to pay for it, or foster a dog or cat maybe, because they just can't afford it that way its worked out in other ways benefits everyone, and the animals are the ones who are saved. But I have noticed that my redbone coonhound miley is getting a couple of round cysts in a few spots and when she lost weight the biggest one was the size of a golf ball and it shrank and virtually disappeared when she lost the weight from being sick and she gained weight back its still gone but she has a few small pea sized ball shaped cysts on her hind legs, I was afraid it was what you said about your baby, but Jenn said that she thought it was just fat deposits that older dogs get sometimes especially when she saw that golf ball sized 1 disappeared and didn't come back, she said because they are perfectly rounded usually just fat deposits or calcium deposits, and if I see any thing that is odd shaped or jagged shaped to get it checked out asap and biopsied. So I am really hoping she is correct and I don't have to worry about it. And I am sorry to hear about the loss of your furbaby, i know redbone coonhound are the best, most loving, loyalist, sweetheart of a dog and best friend and family members i have ever had a privilege to be able to have, i have a border collie zoomzoom and she is a great and smart sweetheart too. But miley is the one who saved me as much as I saved her, walking her every day help me lose 90lbs and now I am 160lbs from 250lbs, in just 90days. Plus if I have to stay in the hospital for a few days or weeks she will sit down and wait for me to get back home I have to face time her so she will eat because she doesn't eat until she knows that i am coming back. That is like the redbone in the movie where the red fern grows, when the female redbone lost her brother she staved her self to death and that is exactly how much redbone coonhounds are, they get depressed when they lose their family members especially when they lose the ones they chose to be best friends with, they will give their life to protect you. That is loyalty,

We have a 10 month Redbone Coonhound now named Copper. He's a terrific dog. He has been really good with our 4 kids and very suited to our family. He has traveled on trips from Florida to Wisconsin and is a terrific traveler. He is super quiet too. He almost never barks inside the house but tends to bark at other dogs walking by outside. He can run super fast off leash in our big backyard. It is so good to get him exercise everyday. He's great at walking with us on our local wood trails and loves long walks. Copper even enjoyed going to our local Dog Beach ⛱️ near Ponce Inlet Lighthouse. Having a Redbone Coonhound has been great. He was a rescue dog we adopted from a shelter we found on Petfinder. So blessed to have him. God bless 🙏

Had a friend bring me her 1 yr old Redbone male, Norman, to have him trained for basic commands. I've trained coonhounds since I was a teenager and of the dozens of animals of all coonhound breeds, the Redbone is by far the most intelligent and fast learning sporting hound hands down. At 1yrs old I will say that Norman was a bit stubborn in his ways but through a reward system he became a top- notch hunter and companion for my friend and her family.

I have a redbone/shepard mix and she is the calmest dog I've ever met. My fence is horribly made and she could easily escape, but never does. I always go outside and see her just sitting intently, staring at squirrles. It wasnt until I started fostering dogs that I found out she has a lot more energy than I thought, but she just needs encouragement.

They are just the best dogs ever. Got a male rescue, Buddy, in 2010 who had been in a no kill shelter for nearly a year after I took him out to play fetch and ended up with an audience becayse they didnt know he COULD play fetch because he'd never paid any attention to anyone who had brought him outside the whole time he was there after being relocated from a kill shelter the day he was supposed to be put down. I kind of didn't really even have a choice but to take him home after that. I got him a female puppy I named Jelly (because when you picked her up it was like she had no bones) and he loved her so much and was such a good Mama dog! Both of them were also the most patient and gentle dogs when I had a baby who is now 7 years old and has Autism and ADHD and even though I'm down to just my girl Jelly, she still keeps an eye on him and has a special bay she uses to fuss at him when he's doing something he shouldn't and she's still just SO good with him. I didnt hunt either one of them and my girl didnt have papers either because it was a tree hunting champion who bred unintentionally bred with a male rescue so I got her cheap and she's BEAUTIFUL, but I live out in the cut, and both of them regularly treed raccoons and possums and always properly sounded off for a scent, when they found the animal, and when they have it up in a tree and my girl has done a great job keeping the bears away. She just "treed" a couple raccoons up at the top of a tall deck post the other night. LoL They'll hunt, but boy do they make amazing companions, family pets/spoiled house dogs, and are great with children. We also have cats and even though they didnt grow up with them, they both ended up being loved on by the cats. You just have to wait for the cats to realize they just don't chase them if they dont run. Theres a couple cats that will practically bully them and they'll step aside and let the cats go first. I can't imagine having any other kind of dog ever again now. Its just an unprecedented personality mesh. I guess I'm just a Redbone Coonhound kind of person.

Best dog I ever had was a redbone coonhound. I got him as a rescue. The previous owner(s) had been bad to him. His name was Huckley. Huckley had a cigarette burn deep on his snout. When we got him, he was skin and bones. I've never had a more gentle dog. All he wanted to do was eat and nap. Huckley would only bark in the house if he needed to go outside. He would sit right next to me on the couch and watch football. Had to be careful about leaving out sandwiches; Huckley was not above figuring out how to eat a cheesesteak in three bites. One time, I left a nacho plate too close to him during a bathroom break. He looked like he dove into a tub of nacho cheese. My living room looked like a nacho nuclear bomb went off. I was picking jalapenoes off of the tv screen. The minute I walked into the room, he sat down and looked really guilty. I couldn't even be mad at him. I miss him a ton. Huckley was lord of the living room, terror to squirrels, and friend to anything that weighed more than 10 pounds. And he really liked nachos.

Hurricane Helene happens not to long ago around me. Im about 1hr and a half to 2 hours from some pf the worst spots of N.C. mountains that were just wiped out. About 4 or 5 days later I saw this dog, trying to get hit by a car close to my home. I tried to get him but couldn't. I went on to get my kid from school and came back to the dog in my yard. Just wiped out. Well, after weeks of trying to find its owner, he is mine. He is for sure a redbone coonhound. But he is probably a mix. He is about 1 yr old the vet said. He is solid redbone looks just like one with just a little white on his nose chest and feet. He has no manners lol. He is wild and not potty trained. But an absolute sweetheart 💕! I think he was a mountain dog and after the storm lost his way. Many animals did around here. My husband is on the brink of telling me to get rid of his because of his messing in the house, snarching food off the table and chewing issues. He also has severe separation anxiety. Any tips on how to train him would be great!! I cant afford the crazy trainer prices!! But he is precious and Im not giving up on him!

My girl was a redbone/lab cross and the most amazing dog my family has ever had. She passed nearly a year ago, but she’s left such a big hole nobody can think about getting a new dog just yet. They’re just the most amazing dogs! Agree on the joints though… I wish I’d known and we’d fed her joint support far earlier. She tore both her cruciate ligaments pretty early on. The lab genes probably didn’t improve this. :/

I have a Redbone Coonhound mixed with a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, she inherited both breed's traits wonderfully. She especially got both of their destructive, with being an escape artist and an excellent hole digger. She also is very, very stubborn. I wish I was a hunter sometimes, I really do wonder what she'd be capable of since she is like a perfect mix of two hunting dogs that like to swim. She also, has the most wonderful Retriever smile, and the long and loud Redbone Coonhound baying.

I have a redbone Coonhound, her names Rosie/Rose and shes 1 yr and almost 2 months old. We got her from a lady who owns a campground me and my father stay at in the summer. Rosie is a very energetic dog, she loves attention and sometimes when she's playful she starts bitting my feet, from the back when i run around the room or when im sitting she tries getting the he top of my foot. And shes so whinny, and so i dont know how to make her stop whinning all the time. We also have another dog whos older, which when i give hin attention Rosie seems to get jealous and she playfully attacks the other dog. But shes the cuttest thing ever. And she keeps me entertained

If I may add to your list of famous Redbone Coonhounds: Though it's unconfirmed, Arthur Morgan's boyhood pet dog Copper in Red Dead Redemption 2 is most likely a Redbone. He has a picture of it, and it looks just like one of these dogs. Furthermore, as you described in your video, these dogs were common frontier hunting dogs, so it makes sense that Arthur would acquire one in the 19th Century American West.

How laidback and easy to handle is your Redbone?
Do they have a strong desire to tree furry animals?
Let us know in the comments below!

Dan is very laid-back but knows when there's work to be done he takes it seriously and he does have a strong desire to tree stuff but from owning one for 5 going on 6 years they need a partner so it would be good to get 2 because that's how they work best in pairs

Dawgy Dawg's is amazing he's my first RBCH. He loves sun bathing in sandy dirt in the spring and fall! And LOVES LOVES the water! He even trys to catch the fish while swimming. Don't let him see you with any fishing equipment he will chase your line and you can forget about any fish! But a RB with a mission is like no other. Quitting isn't in there blood!! Now Dawgy Dawg's gentle with babies or smaller children. His 2 legged brother is 4, and both give as good as they get! Now my RBCH is a master ninja 🥷 at seeking in the bed every morning. I've watched him painfully inch up on the bed and freeze for how ever long it takes if he thinks you didn't wake up or noticed him. It's funny he wants the pillow and to be covered up with me or my son! He has a cot the size of a twin with his own blanket when he passes out. I love my RBCH AND IM A RED FOR LIFE!

My RBCH Belle is okay with cats, but chases squirrels, rabbits, armadillos and also these little 2 or 3 inch long lizards around here. If one gets in the house, she goes crazy pursuing it.

Old ebo was a redbone I had another. Was kanute. She was a good old dog too. Redbones originated from, the southern united states. Tennesee and Arkansas. As well as the blue tic hound. The plot hound came from north Carolina ,,, all treeing hounds. Where there still found and used to hunt racoon and bear,,,
