I was given a Blue Tick as a toddler. Fantastic dog that followed me every where i went, Protected me, slept with me, and played with me. She was the best dog i ever owned.
my bluetick recently died. It was given to me. I would have never gone out to look for one as a pet. He was my best friend. He was the smartest, softest, most loving, gentle, funny, strong and beautiful dog i've ever had. I am devastated by the loss of my friend. He went with me everywhere. His name was Leroy. I just wanted you to know. i wish there was a way to post his photo here. Not that i'm bias, (lol) but i think he was the most beautiful bluetick ever.
If you have not had heard a pack of hounds in the middle of the night sounding off and baying up. You have missed alot. It's fantastic. These dogs when ready to go to work will be vibrating like a sewing machine. I've seen them on a hunt with cut feet, bloody muzzle and ears torn running through everything in their path and happy as hell when you get to them. I'm older now and cannot beat the brush as I did when I was young. Glad I got to experience hunting with these dogs. This lady knows this breed very well.
I love how enthused she is to tell the world about her breed. I like that these videos focus on the overall breed characteristics and then get specific to the owner or breeder's dogs. And thanks for asking about health issues. Keep up the good work Zeke. Can't wait to see what's next.
Haha, fun story. About four days ago my friends found a starving and sickly young dog that just kind of moseyed on up to them (They live in real rural farmlands). The dog, despite being sick and probably neglected, was as sweet as could be to the family's four girls, one of them being just over a year old. However, the mother of the girls was allergic to dogs, so the dog needed a new home asap. After three days my grandmother decided to take him, and the dog was taken to the vet this morning. The dang thing turned out to be a pure bred Bluetick Coonhound of all things, and is currently on medication for hookworms and anemia. Prayers for this poor dog. His name is Israel, or Izzy for short. Great video by the way, so glad to have a great source of information on UA-cam!
We just got a 7 week old Bluetic, his name is Blue. This is our first hound, and I believe we are in for an adventure. I liked all the information you spoke about.
How has blue been and what can I expect during the first year? I adopted a female Bluetick 2 weeks ago, she 10 weeks now. My girl (Honey) is smart, so training has been fun but she can also stubborn as a mule lol
I adopted a blue tic from the shelter. She got me with those sad eyes and she had me from hello. Been with me ever since. Awesome family dog jus like u said. I named mine michone. She was s a awesome truck riding dog. She absolutely loves me. She’s a precious baby. Wish I could show u a pic
Our purebred bluetick, Bessie, is now almost 9. She is hands down the best dog I've ever had and I would never have a dog of another breed. But I will say a few cautionary words to people thinking of getting one. Firstly, and this didn't come up in the video, this is a "LOUD" dog. We live in a house in town. I've trained her to keep a lid on it, but she was very loud when we first got her, and even now she still starts bawling her head of at super high decibels when she gets excited out in the yard (for instance if a squirrel attempts to enter the yard) Fortunately the neighbors love her. But you can probably hear her 5 blocks away (seriously - at least 5), so I'm not sure about other people. She is an extremely affectionate dog. She is constantly snuggling up and trying to get pets. You have to pet her about 8 times a day. She prefers to be with me and/or my wife all of the time. She doesn't like to do things alone. She doesn't like to be alone, but she puts up with it, to a point. OK, here's the big one: You have to walk her all the time and I don't mean little walks around the neighborhood either. We're currently doing 3 brisk miles every single morning. If you don't do this, she'll get kinda crazy and might start chewing up the furniture, spreading trash around the house, and things like that. So, she keeps us in shape. So to finish this, in my experience, these are the best dogs ever - the sweetest, most loving dog you could ever imagine. But you have to be ready for all of it. They're not for everyone. This is not a golden retriever. This is a high maintenance dog.
Dam right the bluetick in my opinion is one of the best hounds and one of the best dogs a person could ever own. My old Chief has been gone almost a year now and I miss him so
I owned a Bluetick/July Walker mix. Best dog I have ever had. He was great with my step children. He was very protective of us. He would always do safety checks at bed time. Very vocal with strangers.
Best dog ever! I grew up with a golden retriever and the bluetick has won my heart! So much personality and a big clown. Love the breed, i don’t think i’ll ever buy another breed.
English Coonhound is the redticked hound, very similar to these blueticked hounds. The English Coonhound is so called because it was developed from English Foxhounds, with other dogs mixed in to improve the treeing ability. These coonhounds are all "landraces", working dog breeds that have very complex ancestry. Dogs of various breeds were mixed to try to get the best mix of traits for the needs of farmers in the American south. So these coonhounds have beagles and their antecedents like the Talbot Hound in their ancestry, English Foxhounds, the French Gascon hounds, as well as other utility breeds and mongrels. They stabilised into six distinct breeds, this video showing the Bluetick Coonhound and the reference to the English Coonhound is to what is also known as the Redtick Coonhound. All great dogs.
My father had a bluetick when I was a baby, and young kid. He was everything this woman said; especially the super protective part, but also the incredibly family friendly part, and amazing hunter. I remember laying on the floor in the living room watching tv with my head on his tummy, and he would just lay there as long as I would. When I would get up to go somewhere (ie: the bathroom or kitchen); he was right there by my side. I miss him sssooo much. 😢
This is great information. Me an my family just rescued a black and tan coonhound. He is 2 an is a great addition to the family. I have 4 kids from 5 to 15 an the black an tan does great with kids. Even at feeding time he allows the kids to pet him. Black and tans are my favorite breeds
Nice! I rescued a B&T a year ago. He was 3mo at the time. Guy was going to dump him in the Delta. Brought him home. Can’t imagine not having a coonie now. I live $h!t out that dog...
Robert Forester you're right the blue healers...they are great little dogs too. They can get very protective of a family and will bite you for no reason if you come on their land
I grew up down south in tn and plenty of people my family knew had blue ticks and we r in ohio now, wife and I have had 5 blue heelers, a fox hound, a chiughagha, and border collies and 1 min Alaskan husky/jackrussel. Eventually wife needs a taller dog as a service dog and was thinking maybe a blue tick
Love this video.. I've had many dogs breeds in my life; muts (lab/pit mix), Collies, Great Danes, and a few smaller breeds. although 13 years ago i was given a Bluetick puppy as a valentines day present and she was the best dog i every had in my life. She was the most caring and lovable dog i ever owned and is the reason why i will never want any other breed again (well except for maybe Great Dane). But be warned. Blueticks are very smart dogs. She could tell what you where making for dinner before you even have it done, and already plan out how she could steal some off your plate. :) But she was a dog that wanted nothing more from you than love and attention. From the time i got home till i had to leave for work she was by my side. So if you don't want a dog that is with you all the time stay way.. Also on training get a electronic training collar. Once a hound finds a scent they are fixated. There was more than one time i could only get her attention outside by making her collar vibrate because she was so fixated on the cool new sent she just picked up.
Recently my bluetick passed away. Miss Bella Blu was the sweetest dog I have ever owned. When walking with her in the park people would stop and tell me how beautiful they thought she was. I miss her as much today as the day she passed.
Great video! If you can, look at doing one on the Plott hound. Definitely a dog most people aren't aware of, but I think the first recognized "American" breed. We have one and she's an awesome dog.
I have had two lines of these majestic dogs as well as the le petite bleu de gascon. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM!!! I live in Nova Scotia Canada where raccoons are so plentiful they are a dominant pest, however I purchased my first line from the famous David Dean. It was off hammer xv111. His name was Gator. I trained and used him for snow shoe hare. This beauty was incredible. He would leave the beagles in the dust. What ever took the 15" top notch beagle say 20 min to round up the first rabbit these beasts would do it in 3-5 min. Beagles are no match!! The blues have an incredible nose and can handle the deeper snows. I would run them 5-7 hours a day on a hunt and they were ready to go the next days to follow. I have also had the Cameron line. The same thing outstanding in the deep black thick spruce with many bogs lakes and rough terrain ie cape Bretton highlands of NS. I have today my old gal Ruby who is 10. She is now just my jogging companion. I have also had the Bainbridge line out of Ontario Canada. Her name was Dixie. She was by far the most BEAUTIFUL OF THE BLUETICK. A show dog. Once again incredible hunter and exceptional house dog. Extremely lovable and compassionate hunter. 7 years ago I purchased their European cousin the petite bleu de gascogne. Not the short legged basset type rather smaller to the grand bleu. You can definitely see where the breed originated to make its American cousin. Now Otis was the grittiest of all and he was very sleek GORGEOUS. there were only 4 in Canada from le bleu cardinals from Europe here. Unfortunately he passed this winter. I loved him dearly. I would have to say the larger hounds were much more enjoyable than the beagles for rabbit hunting. Smart and quick. My female would even retrieve the rabbit after the shot was confirmed. I would own many more if I were a younger man starting off again. My next hound after Ruby will be an American black and tan. I just love the coonhound breed. They will hunt what ever you train them on. After 40 years of this hare hunting I would say all around hands down they are the most lovable best hunters of large and small game.
Mine loves hugs. We rescued him from a man who did nothing but keep him chained to a doghouse 24-7. He was starving and covered in poop. I never thought I would end up a dog like him but he had me at hello.
Also the " Gran bleu de Gasgone" still exist and have of course this special color. I owned one and its a very functional and beautiful working dog. Like the Coonhound; great dogs. Greets from Europe
Zeke I always look forward to your new videos mate - you are doing a brilliant job. Its especially interesting seeing breeds like the Coonhound/ Pitbull/ Dogo etc which aren't really known or available here in the UK. Thanks for all the hard work mate :-)
They are definitely a handful. 😄 After we had to have our Basset Hound put down in January, I said I didn't want another dog unless it was a hound. Our niece gave us her 1 year old female blue tick....who turned out to be pregnant with two pups. Sadly the female pup accidentally suffocated ☹️ but we still have the boy. He's now 8 months old, built like a truck and strong as an ox. But I love these dogs, wouldn't trade them for anything.
I used to keep a bluetick and a monster bull mastiff on the property... One to sound the alarm the other to.... We didn't get many return walk-ups in the door yard
ZEKE you are one of my favorite ppl on youtube I cant believe that my Central Asian Shepherd breeder has two Brad Anderson Central Asians. What a small world!!!
Just rescued a young 4 month old puppy. Mom was a rottweiler dad was a blue tick hound. Really stubborn little guy but man I love him. Looks mostly like a hound with a little bit of a thicker muscular build.
My buddy, "Duke" is a Bluetick-Lab mix...every bit of the bt coloration...Abita heftier at 89 Lbs. The best dog EVER! Friendly but fierce. Very powerful.
Love those huntin' hounds. Didn't know they were also good protection dogs. I've always had ridgebacks, for that purpose. I'm crazy about Blue Ticks and Black & Tans, and always check them out at the Westminster.
Retired now. Love to go on walks, two times per day. This breed looks like a good mate for my life's ways. Treat my past dog buddies like I'd like to be treated. Sure we can get along just fine.
If Dee was a key advocate for AKC recognition, she did not "love" the breed. The AKC has done nothing good for so called breed "improvement." I read their board minutes from years ago, when they backed a split among lines of Black and Tan Coonhounds, all based on ear length. People who were actually WORKING their black and tans bred dogs for smaller ears than the show folks liked, because contrary to some people's belief, those giant ears don't do much to pick up scent or help dogs on the hunt. Too big and they are a liability, prone to injury. But the show folks said they liked the giant ears because they looked "Houndy" and "Typey" and "Traditional". So they actually closed the studbooks. Thus limiting the gene pool. Now does that sound like they care about dogs? Not really. It's a beauty pageant and a farce.
Enjoyed the video, just wish you had interviewed someone in the south who has raised hunting bloodlines for years. Uchtman, Jet, Smokey River Jeans Blue Tramp... etc. She touched on the high points but never explained them to to some of the older bluetickers in Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Arkansas, Mississippi... 10/10 though still. Thanks again for another great one.
My blue tick is a perfect to me. My dad gave him to me. My dad also has blue tick , black and tan, and walker. They are all great dogs and very beautiful
Blueticks are amazing dogs. My great uncle had one. I only coexisted with Maggie may a short time but she was so patient with me as a Toddler. I would claim on her and pull her ears and she'd just lay there and take it. She been gone a long time. I think I was four or five when she died and I'm nearly 20 now but I hope to get on in the future.
I knew a bear hunter that had a kennel full of blueticks. One of them looked identical to the dog in the beginning. His name was EASY. And he was the COOLEST dog!! There was 7-8 of them and Easy was the diplomat of the pack. I might like one of these. Fearless and jovial is a great combination. Lol
I took a blue tick in a few years ago she was dropped off in Vermont and was down to her ribs showing I did not take her for hunting she was about 2 years old and had been breed a few times and was gun shy. Had to help get over the fear of noises helped some she was the best dog I ever had she passed at 13 about 7years ago her picture and ashes are by my bed think of her everyday. She was sent to me for a reason and had the best life I could give her. Her name was Shilo
My Lord 😀 YOU are a very SMART 🤓🙏👍🤓 LADY!!!!! I have been watching the video and I thought 🤔💭🤔 I knew a little bit 🤓 BUT you have taught me how to be a better 😀 THINKER!!!!!🙏👍🤔🙏
My blue tick had a defective sent and was blind in her right eye so she was never used for hunting so she never really treed anything so one time instead for treeing a raccoon or something she treed a cat and then that cat became her best friend a couple months later. She passed 1 year ago and my cat passed 6 months ago both from cancer RIP Bella and Amber
I would love to have a blue tick I don't hunt but I do a lot of hiking and camping! So I could definitely give one freedom two Wonder around and be himself or herself
We rescued a dog and was told it was a Basset Hound mix and wouldn’t get larger than 50 - 60 lbs. We named him Buster, as a Toy Story reference. Well we sent in a sample to see what breed he is, because he had spots that we never seen on a Basset. Long story short, he is 63% Blue tick, 7% Treewalker Coonhound, and 30% Beagle and last time we weighed him, he was 85 lbs at only 18 months old. 😂 This woman hit the nail on the head with every sentence. He will literally escape and go visit all of our neighbors. He almost got attacked by a mean Parrot once. He REALLY wants to be friends with it but it ain’t about that life sadly. I have three kids from 3 - 10 years old and he is amazing with them. He WILL wrestle back if they are getting rough however, but young kids are just pups as well and they learn how far to push him. He was just outback with the four of us and was playing and running around in the leaves with the kids. I love that stubborn, EXTREMELY SMART, musty, droopy faced hound dog. I wish I could post a picture, he is a beautiful dog.
@@kelliewilliams3719 are they a dog that would return home? We have a German shepherd now. She is territorial but does leave at times throughout the day, we have only a few neighbors so she has 100s of acres to just roam next to our 32. She does return and lays around our yard mostly. I hate to fence in a dog or leave on a run when there is all this land. Is training possible with a bluetick to come back or not go far?
@@Shannesi042 I live on a little over half an acre in the city. It’s wooded around the borders. I leave my doors open during the day and 9/10 my bluetick is either sunbathing in the backyard or she’s laying on the couch and watching the squirrels in the front yard
I think my dog is a Coonhound mixed breed. She's the cutest dog ever in my opinion. I'm not sure what breeds, but she weighs about 65 lb (full grown) and she has double dewclaws on both of her back legs.

They will hunt what ever you train them on. After 40 years of this hare hunting I would say all around hands down they are the most lovable best hunters of large and small game.
Here in south carolina me and my dad use them and other hounds for hunting deer. Great video.
Blueticks are insane.
thank you for this documentary ma'am !
This is an amazingly informed woman. I’m hoping I can find a video of her talking about the Black and Tan like I have.
I love this channel so educational I love dogs
Mine loves hugs. We rescued him from a man who did nothing but keep him chained to a doghouse 24-7. He was starving and covered in poop. I never thought I would end up a dog like him but he had me at hello.
Dee was so sweet!!! All of her dogs are so well trained!!!
Thanks for all the hard work mate :-)
thanks bro!
Love it ! Thanks Dogumentary TV.
I have a blue tick basset mix. Best dog ever. She is damn near human.
I use to have a bluetick that we took hog hunting and he was a good tracking dog, i miss him.
i have two blue ticks... great dogs can be loud.. no one has ever broken on to my property ..
+Brady Lawson thanks bro!
Brady Lawson, who's your Central Asian Shepherd breeder?
Miguel Pallanes .Ania and Greg with Grand Central Asians out of Byron Georgia
Just rescued a young 4 month old puppy. Mom was a rottweiler dad was a blue tick hound. Really stubborn little guy but man I love him. Looks mostly like a hound with a little bit of a thicker muscular build.
Thanks for this breakdown!
My buddy, "Duke" is a Bluetick-Lab mix...every bit of the bt coloration...Abita heftier at 89 Lbs. The best dog EVER! Friendly but fierce. Very powerful.
My best dog ever. Every thing you say is so very true. Thank you.wish I could send a pic of him you would no.
Thanks for the great video. I miss my bluetick and really appreciate vids like this.
I’m getting two redbone coonhounds, but I love all hounds. I loved your video❤️
That shirt is amazing 🍋
I grew up with Hound dogs, mostly Walkers, and Beagles and they were all very friendly.
Have a red tick he is the cutest, friendliest dog I have ever had.
Nice video. Always liked the unique coloring of these dogs.
Best dog I've ever had
If Dee was a key advocate for AKC recognition, she did not "love" the breed. The AKC has done nothing good for so called breed "improvement."
I read their board minutes from years ago, when they backed a split among lines of Black and Tan Coonhounds, all based on ear length.
Agreed
this. I'd hoped to find working black & tan like I grew up around, hate the long flopping ears. hoped maybe they hadn't done this to blueticks...
Janeway1269 interesting thank you
I completely agree with you. People who breed for appearance are doing a tremendous disservice to dogs.
that's how almost every breed is. bred terribly in show-lines, bred amazingly in working-lines
Her "american Staffordshire terrier was actually a pitbull" lmao masterofbulldog would cry lol
Have always admired these dogs!
I love Blueticks!!!
My blue tick is a perfect to me.
My dad gave him to me. My dad also has blue tick , black and tan, and walker. They are all great dogs and very beautiful
Blue Heelers are also this color! But I'm partial to my Bluetick
Cant wait for the Chow Chow documentary!!
Thank you, for your advice.
My Lord 😀 YOU are a very SMART 🤓🙏👍🤓 LADY!!!!! I have been watching the video and I thought 🤔💭🤔 I knew a little bit 🤓 BUT you have taught me how to be a better 😀 THINKER!!!!!🙏👍🤔🙏
Is there a video on the Black and Tan coonhound?
My blue tick had a defective sent and was blind in her right eye so she was never used for hunting so she never really treed anything so one time instead for treeing a raccoon or something she treed a cat and then that cat became her best friend a couple months later. She passed 1 year ago and my cat passed 6 months ago both from cancer RIP Bella and Amber
I’m sorry about that.
My bluetick was a great hunter.
My walker is not social, but my bluetick is very very social. Thank you for that comment. 👍🏻 I agree
I love my Bluetick.
Great video about a great breed
I had two blue ticks sunny and daisy
I would love to have a blue tick I don't hunt but I do a lot of hiking and camping! So I could definitely give one freedom two Wonder around and be himself or herself
"They get board" yuuup yuuuuup they deffinitly do lol
She knows a lot about Coonhounds
I love bluetick coonhound because of his hound
“My first staffordshire terrier actually was a pitbull”
I’m glad you switched breeds
Do they tend to be runners?...we live on 32 acres would like them to be able to run without getting lost.
Yes their noses take them places lol
I have beagles and Hounds are the best, all of them. Just the best. 😊
Blue Heelers have that similar pattern and color too. I don't know if it's technically not blue ticked, but it looks basically identical in pattern.
Can they be trained to track bleeding deer?
So cute, thank you for the information.
Great video
I think my dog is a Coonhound mixed breed. She's the cutest dog ever in my opinion. I'm not sure what breeds, but she weighs about 65 lb (full grown) and she has double dewclaws on both of her back legs.
I HAVE NEVER DELT WITH THIS KINDA DOG BEFORE' BUT TOMORROW I AM GETTING A 8 EAR OLD FEMALE BLUE. I AM LEARNING SUPER FAST WHAT TO EXSPECT FOR THIS KINDA BREED
I’ve had 2 blue tick beagles too.
I’ve got a blue tic setter mix, a blue tic setter and pointer, a blue tic shirt leg beagle, and 7 blue tic setter beagle and they all picked up deer hunting super fast! And the best handling dogs I’ve dealt with
is there a difference in dominance between the male hound and female?
Love you bro :)
I miss our hound. Levi was the best.
Grew up with pointers and blue ticks
