About Maude: Gutsy, smart, outspoken, and liberal -- all are terms that describe Beatrice Arthur in the title role of the TV series that spun off from the popular All in the Family. Well-educated and upper-middle-class, Maude Findlay is the archetypal feminist of her generation. She lives in suburban Tuckahoe, New York, with her fourth husband, Walter (Bill Macy), their divorced daughter, Carol (Adrienne Barbeau), and grandson Phillip. The cast also includes Rue McClanahan as Maude's best friend Vivian; Walter's best friend and neighbor Dr. Arthur Harmon (Conrad Bain); and over the course of the series, three different maids (Esther Rolle, Hermione Baddeley and Marlene Warfield). Tough issues like abortion, alcoholism, women's liberation, menopause and politics are all fodder for the show's sharp wit and social commentary.

Norman Lear owned prime time in the seventies, All in the family, Jefferson’s,Maude, One day at a time, Good Times etc
1970s TV, especially a show like Maude is a billion times better what passes for TV made in the 21st century.
Without a doubt.
No.
I remember 1970s TV very well. It really was a golden age of television.
This show holds up very well.
This was one of the best shows on tv back then. Maud was before its time. The theme song was even the best. I have never forgotten the words to it. Bea Arthur...such a great actress. the cast was just the living end. I'm praying someone uploaded more eps of this one.
Bea Arthur had such a dry sense of humor and her sarcasm and dry sense of humor made her great.

That was a Pilot? They Knocked it Out of the Park.💜😻
It was always the most underrated of mr lear's classics.
To be honest one of the few that didn't really jump the shark
I'd rank Maude right up there with all in the family!!
Just an observation as I was watching this, their acting style is pure theater. From the strong vocal projection to the staging, this feels like I’m watching a play intermixed with a few close ups to remind you of the actual medium. It makes me wonder if this was a concession to Bea’s background and a subtle way to make her more comfortable or if this a reflection of the creative team and the time when it was created.
It really does seem like a Broadway production.
This comment made me realize what the “difference” was between Maude and The Golden Girls (aside from different decades, creative teams, etc.) that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Thanks! :)
All Norman Lear shows are like this.
True, its like watching a broadway production ...! Amazing!
Possibly both, but a lot of shows from this time did this. Not all, so it might have been partly to do with the actors also ... and, in this case, even the character. One suspects Maude would have acted like this in real life ...
I saw this first episode when it aired. My mother had a hysterectomy at the beginning of that year, 1972. This was my second sociology class after "All in the Family".
A lot of people don't know that Uber liberal Bea Arthur drove a supply truck while serving in the Marines in WW2. I may not agree with her politics but she gets mad respect from me for that. I've loved watching her throughout my life, especially in the All in the Family episodes, butting heads with Archie. Pure comedy gold.
Her politics shouldn’t even matter anyway. I swear people’s whole personalities nowadays are based around politics
@@savonjr16 Her politics mattered because it's pretty much all she talked about. Every interview, every question she was asked, every time she opened her mouth. Her entire TV existence was about her politics. And you have to jump in like some SJW defender and make a clown out of yourself. Smh.

Always someone nostalgic as hell for times that were better for them and worse for us.
This isn’t the pilot. The pilot aired as an episode of All in the Family, where Archie and Edith went to visit Maude for her daughter Carol’s wedding. That pilot was used to sell the series to CBS. This is simply the first episode of Maude. Often the first episode is the same as the pilot, but that’s not the case here.
@Albert Dibari Yep. Maude actually appeared in two episodes. There’s the one early in the second season where she comes to take care of the family when they have the flu. And then there’s the one later in the second season where the Bunkers travelled to Maude’s for Carol’s wedding. That’s the episode that served as the “Maude” pilot, because the Bunkers have very small roles, and the episode focuses on Maude, Walter, and Carol.
I never realized this was the pilot. I've seen it a couple of times thanks to your uploads!! Thank You SOOOOO much for brightening my days up!!! 🤣🤣❤️

Carols character just had no direction. EVERY week it was a diff man and a diff prob. Maudes character had so much to deal with that comedy was the only solution. And it was FABULOUS!!

She dressed really nice. I loved the styles of Maude and Louise Jefferson.
You should see the episode of Carol Burnett where she imitates Maude and her style of dress! Its hilarious!
And then there's broad!
Maude, All In The Family, The Jefferson’s-it was smart television in a way we don’t get anymore. It made its point, but it didn’t hit you over the head with it-it didn’t have to. While you were laughing hysterically, you didn’t realize what you were absorbing. Even if the views didn’t match up to your own 100% - you were seeing another side through a smile. When you weren’t laughing you were being given characters and plots that had a sneaky amount of heart you didn’t expect from sitcom tv. That was the killer combo of all these Norman Lear gems. If only we could find a way to address many of these same issues today with the same level of class, dignity and humor - we’d realize there’s a lot more we have in common than we do that separates us.
.....And "One Day at a Time!"
GodBless Mr. Norman Lear.

Maude pushed the envelope more than All in the Family bringing women's issues to the forefront.
That would be because the name of the show is .....M A U D E!
Actually Norman Lear pushed the envelope.
All thanks to Norman Lear and the inspiration from his wife to create this show. The episode about abortion was groundbreaking because it came out around the time when Roe v Wade passed. Also, the episode where Maude and Florida confront both of their husbands about their treatment of their wives was groundbreaking. It's also great because we get 2 different women's perspectives and experiences. While Maude may have had experiences with sexism, she's still a white woman with privilege and never had to deal with racism. Therefore, she never had to go through the double discrimination that Florida must've experienced throughout her life...
@@rebeccassweetmusic4632 - White privilege? What a bunch of nonsense. As a white person in my younger adult years, I had absolutely no money while I struggled to make ends meet and drove a car that was over 20 years old, for a total of six years. I can't tell you how many times my very street legal car was profiled by the police and I was stopped for no reason. And no, I wasn't speeding or commiting any moving violations. Some of the officers were nice about it, but others were very rude to me because of my youthful teenaged appearance. This was despite the fact that I always remained polite. Perhaps you grew up as a privileged white person. But that does not mean white people do in general. What a ridiculous concept.
@@finster1968 No need to get defensive. White privilege doesn’t mean you grew up with lots and lots of money. It just means that we're lucky to have not experienced racism and discrimination unlike POC. You mentioned that you've had a few encounters with the cops who were rude to you. That's one thing! However, it's another thing to be black and have the cops be unnecessarily aggressive and violent towards you. Or even shoot you. Then to have the media paint u as criminal or a thief who "deserved it."
Again... White privilege has nothing to do with money. It shields us from things we've never had to experience
Maude was defined as middle class. No, more like upper middle class! Nice large home, nice furniture, and a large collection of booze. The Bunkers were lower middle class, but they had two eating areas.
