Maybe something that is good to mention here: The Panasonic UB820 and UB9000 have an auto detection function for HDR10/HDR10+/Dolby Vision, but if a disc contains both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision (Which I, at first, wasn't even aware of that it existed), both players default to HDR10+ and you have to disable HDR10+ detection in the player's menu if you want to watch the content in Dolby Vision. ;)

@FOMO what would you recommend for someone who needs coaxial SPDIF to play CDs in to an external DAC? I’ll be using up the Toslink port coming from the TV coming from the AppleTV [ATV->TV->DAC]. The Pana 820 would be perfect except that it is missing the digital coax. I guessing that makes it a choice between the Pana 9000 vs Magnatar 800? Mahalo!

I chose the Sony UBP-X800M2 because I also like having DVD-AUDIO and SACD support. I really think that features such as auto detection of Dolby Vision and native output video resolution can easilly be added for free via firmware update. I really wish Sony would just give us such a release as a free download to install on the player.

At first irksome having to manually turn Dolby Vision on or off, but it's quick and easy with just a few clicks and I quickly got used to it. Or just leave it on auto HDR and forget about Dolby...I really can't tell the difference on my set, and HDR looks fantastic already. I paid just $150 new on Amazon sale and every year in the fall it goes on sale for under $170.

I have been using the Sony X700 for a while now and aside from supporting 4K HDR and Dolby Vision/Atmos, and DTS:X, it can also play back SACD and DVD-A. I do have a couple of SACDs and a DVD-A discs so it makes me happy that I can play these back without having to buy extra gear specifically for those formats. I may be mistaken but I believe the X700 can also playback 3D movies. I had a look at my X700's settings and found some settings for 3D output. I don't watch 3D movies and my TV does not support 3D so this feature is not important to me at all. The manual switching on and off of Dolby Vision is only a minor inconvenience though. The other downside I can say is that I have experienced some skipping and freezing issues with the X700 while other times, the whole thing just ran smoothly. I am not sure though if it's the device or the disc that's defective.

I have a Sony X800M2 and I honestly have no idea what you mean about having to manually set DV.

Depending on the non-DV content, if you compared them side by side, the colors will be slightly off as the X800M2 is outputing everything as DV which is incorrect - check your TV to see if your TV thinks it's receiving DV

LG UBK90 is a good competitor to the Sony X700. Super basic interface but quick load times, auto detect Dolby Vision, 3D support, Dual HDMI out for those with older receiver /processor that don't support Dolby Vision pass thru. Reavon owner here, YES IT DOES DO DOLBY VISION AUTO DETECT! Where did you get the idea it doesn't? The better option is the X110 as it has both DVD-Audio and SACD support the Panansonic 9000 doesn't. I haven't used a Magnetar, but from what I have read and seen it is a better player than the Reavon X200 but the X200 at it's price does offer analog 7.1 out for even older receiver/processors or multi channel SACD.

Fiber optic is purely audio, nothing to do with video. Fiber optic also can’t do all of the audio formats. I don’t believe it can do Atmos or DTS-X at all, it also wouldn’t be able to automatically turn on devices and switch to the correct port like HDMI.

The Panasonic players also support 4k 'SDR' (I'm not talking about 4k HDR) playback in 10 bit, such as the Kino Lorber 'Dollars trilogy. The other players output 4K SDR in 8 bit...thereby reducing the quality down instead of playing it in true 10 bit. Also, the Panasonic players perform test pattern playback better when using the spears and munsil test discs. There are less jaggies and noise, practically none. In real world content on TV screens when pixel peeping, its probably not noticeable. But, for the perfectionists out there, the Panasonic has the best video processing.

The Panasonic UB820 has a slightly warmer picture tone than all of the Sonys and the colors are more saturated. The Panasonic UB820 can also provide custom tone mapping to brighten the APL on 4K HDR (non Dolby Vision) discs. The Sony X800 series is made of metal. The Panasonic UB820 is plastic. My go to player is the Sony X800 (original) as it has the cleanest picture. The Sonys, except the PlayStation 5, play SACDs if that is important to you. The PlayStation does not play any kind of music disc. The Panasonic has a feature where you can simulate vacuum tube sound for CDs if that is your thing.

I own the X700M, the X800M2 and the X1100ES from Sony. With all of them (and I use them all the time with my collection of over 50 4K movies) I have never once had any of them freeze or skip on any disc I have ever put into them. Do note here that it was determined that several disc stamping facilities out of Asia over the past few years were known to be putting incorrectly stamped/pressed defective discs out into the marketplace. Some of the Sony players were freezing at the layer boundary transition on many of those flawed discs. The freezing problem with these players was much more likely due to issues relating to those flawed discs rather than anything with the players themselves. As always though, be sure and keep your players up to date with the latest firmware updates. Sony is one of the very best companies out there when it comes to issuing updates for their players to keep them as up to date, issue-free and current as possible.

Got the oppo 203 at launch and added pioneer elite lx500 BD player. These are my go to players for quite a while
Now. I still buy movies on disk due very poor Dolby atmos on streaming service almost no dynamic at all.
DV is too dim vs HDR 10, DV locks all the picture trying while HDR 10 let you change brightness, in my opinion ignore DV hype.

I recently bought the Sony UDP-X700M to pair with my December purchase of an LG C3. LG has properly executed Dolby Vision and a better GUI (WebOS) than Sony or Samsung. I don't know why people were pushing for the Samsung QD-OLED when I've found my LG C3 does just fine in a bright sunlit room and gives a nice bright picture. So, I'm very happy with my buys.

In my experience, the XBox series X is very loud when playing 4k discs. I don't know if it's the dvd mechanism itself or the fan, but either way, unless you plan on listening to the movie at very high volume, the loudness of the machine makes watching 4k discs on xbox a no-go for me.

How is AI supposed to help with missing 8K-optimized codec-decoding hardware in streaming boxes and TVs? 8K eats up a huge amount of throughput when used with codecs that are better for 4K like HEVC, and VVC, which is a codec that is much more well-suited for 8K, cannot be decoded by most TVs or streaming boxes due to missing decoding hardware. As of this writing, the only TV hardware that decodes VVC is MediaTek’s Pentonic SoCs like the Pentonic 700 (mainstream 4K TV SoC), Pentonic 1000 (high end 4K TV SoC), and Pentonic 2000 (8K TV SoC). The first two are found in newer Hisense and Sony TVs respectively. Samsung’s and LG’s SoCs can’t decode VVC.

It won't matter if it does. No one has an 8K display and content largely still isn't even being shot in 8K today, except with very rare exception. 8K will likely have its day at some point, but for the foreseeable future, unless something drastic changes (and there is no indication yet today at all that it will) 8K appears to be DOA for the most part, at least with respect to the consumer marketplace.

FOMO, for $500 you can buy 4k Digital Video Player with HDD and play all your favorite movies from it, HDR, DV, Atmos or whatever you want.
Plus you don't need to buy $30-50 disks anymore, wich scratches very easily and it's a WASTE OF $$$$.

I'd say I can't believe there are people blind Blu-ray players but based on the fact that Blu-ray players are still absurdly expensive, most people ARENT buying them.
It was like this to some extent when VHS first csme out, but eventually the sales volume and competition brought prices down..
Under 500 bucks for a literal disc player, no way in hell. Especially since even with the expensive ones they're still lacking features...
