Hey man I got a 95 530i been hearing a tacking or ticking sound when my car is just sitting to warm up. Could that have to do with the oil pump or maybe the chain under the oil pan? It's not a knocking noise like it lost to much oil at one point just a small like ticking noise
thankyou for this great video, similar to yours, the same bolt had dropped out in mine and the chain was loose, but on mine the bolt had fallen into the cover infront of the sprocket and chain to the oilpump and got absolutely shredded before it spit it out into the oilpan, luckily on inspection the sprocket and chain seems undamaged
Hey I'm in the middle of this right now, theres no place to insert a hex on the bolt that you said is the tensioner. The Bentley manual shows the same process as you described, but I cant find anywhere to insert the hex. Any idea how to tighten the pump chain?
Hm, ill look around. But I see almost every tutorial mention a bolt behind the oil pump in addition to the ones in the front, but nobody actually shows it and its position. Do you know which one it is? I dont think its all the 10mm (?) ones they mean.
Thanks for the video! I've had low oil pressure. Even though I've filled it with new oil, metal grinding/tacking sound come from the engine, that follows the revving speed. Could that be a lose oil pump too, on my E34 518i?
So, i did this job too. My pump had a plastic cover on it..took it off and saw the chain tension being way too low. Took the tension bolt out, did the tensioner, loctite and bolt back in. Checked the rear bolts redid them with loctite and put the front cover back on. Now realising days later i forgot to check the other big front bolt next to the tensioner! And with that stupid plastic cover...if it backs out it will hit the sprocket... Gotta get back in there again i guess...
New to the e34 scene. my question is was there a problem such as oil leaks to change that oil pan? also what are the known problems with the e34 540i? just bought on as a project so i need to know what to change out. It's been sitting for 2 years
Hey man! My oil pan wasn't leaking, but it's always recommended to swap out the gasket if you pull it off. Hmm, known problems... I found this video to be helpful: ua-cam.com/video/JAK1ZFGVlXI/v-deo.html. Listen out for a chattering noise from the front of the engine when it starts up, as this could mean your timing chain guides are broken. If this is the case you'll find bits of plastic in your oil pan. Make sure to check this oil pump bolt issue out too because that is VERY common. Check the coolant reservoir, make sure it's in good condition because it's plastic. Also, check the heater valve fittings (in my video here: ua-cam.com/video/844XIOjpFt0/v-deo.html) because they are also plastic, get old and will drop all of your coolant when they snap. Check your rear sub-frame bushings too (also one of my videos), and also all the ball joints in the front end. Another very common issue is for your valve cover gaskets to leak oil, which you'll be able to see. Occasionally this might leak into the wells where the spark-plugs sit, which can cause a misfire. This is easy enough to change at home, it's one of the first things I did when i got the car (before I youtubed). Make sure to check for oil leaks in general too, including the power steering box. There are plenty of minor known problems out there, such as the wipers hitting the hood (mine does this haha), your electric seat pulling to one side when you try and lift it up and down (mine also does this), and your cruise control not working because the brake pedal switch is old. The forums are your friend! If it's been sitting, straight away change out the oil and coolant first.
+Mechanical Fix If it's blue it means you're probably burning oil, which means oil is getting into your cylinders. That could mean oil is leaking last your valves or maybe your piston rings, and unfortunately the only way to fix that is to pull apart the engine and rebuild it.
+Emir Hamidović I'm tempted haha. Waiting until I've finished my manual swap (still waiting on parts) before I touch my exhaust. My neighbours will hate me.
Niceeeee... Can't wait to see that video... And this days, I'm doing insane stuff on my E34, also expecting new Drift steering wheel from local Manufacturer :) I'll make video, you will then see how insane I am :D
I know bmw..... But look online or in an owners manual for mercedes oil viscosity chart. Unless u live where it freezes use 20- 50 when you get it back together.. Before anyone says bad idea look for yourself .
I'm from Malaysia. weather is similar to Queensland. I used 20w50 before and found it quite heavy. so changed to 10w40. found it much better. morning starts are much better even in our type of climate.
You know, I just talked with a Mechanic and he recommended 10w40 as well. I think I'll make the switch next time I do an oil change! Thanks for the suggestion. Are you running a semi-synthetic?
No worries. glad to help. and yes I'm running castrol semi syn 10w40. for the next oil change am hoping to try Motul 6100 which is a semi syn 10w40 as well. It has superb reviews and categorized as a grp5. for the price it's apparently the best value. whereas there seems to be consensus that castrol is overpriced, not that great and relying heavily on massive marketing...don't get me wrong, castrol is ok, but for the same price u cud get a much better oil.
I wouldn't trust the application of Loctite in that oil-soaked environment. In that critical application it would be best to dismount the oil pump and drill out all the bolt heads and one nut for safety wire.
Nice as always. Glad you are on top of preventative maintenance.
+Darth Volvo Glad I am too after finding that bolt.
Will be doing this on my E39 535i. Thanks for the guide!

Perfect video, kindly I have e23 735 m30 , are it the same steps to check the oil pump . Appreciate.
+saudiwave Hey mate! It'll be very similar, just drop off your oil pan.
As usual Big Thumbs up! You've helped me out alot!
+LibeRebil It's comments like these that make me make videos! Cheers
Check Out Liberebil if you can you might enjoy it! Thank you!
+LibeRebil Your channel looks awesome and congrats on all the subs you got!
Thanks LOL! Hard work lol!
Nice and clear 👌. Will copy your steps and do mine 👍. Thanks!
Tyhank you. as a new E39 740 il owner I look forward to more of your vids.
If the other bolts are fine should you leave them alone or remove them all and lock tight them?

Nice video man. I'm guessing it's somewhat the same for the M62/M62TU? Same bolts, torque specs etc?
+Daniel Stance I'd assume it'd be pretty similar, although I haven't actually checked! I think it's the same from memory
Hm, ill look around. But I see almost every tutorial mention a bolt behind the oil pump in addition to the ones in the front, but nobody actually shows it and its position. Do you know which one it is? I dont think its all the 10mm (?) ones they mean.

+BlackS0l Hmm, I'm not too sure as I haven't read much about the 518. Does the sound come from the top or bottom of the engine?
yo bro can you do me a solid and find out the part number for that under panel you took off at 1:36
thank you
+AK-DAVE- 47 It might be part 23 on this page here?
www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=HE62-EUR-12-1993-E34-BMW-540i&diagId=51_2867
+AK-DAVE- 47 Yep part number 51718147355
Mechanical Fix thanks man ur the only person I've seen that has the under panel
+AK-DAVE- 47 No problems. Yeah I wouldn't be too worried if I lost mine, the only thing it would stop is dirt.
ya i'm sure it has some aero dynamic function as well

well done applause please share more photos

Thanks for your input. Not much videos on the e34. Keep up the cool videos. I will be watching all your other videos as well.
hey bro, what do i do stop the my car from having problems relating to over eating oil and having a smoke from the exhaust
+Beka Machurishvili Hey man. Is the smoke black or bluish?
+Mechanical Fix If it's blue it means you're probably burning oil, which means oil is getting into your cylinders. That could mean oil is leaking last your valves or maybe your piston rings, and unfortunately the only way to fix that is to pull apart the engine and rebuild it.
Thanks for your reply man
Great vid man! Thank you
+Hans Ahola Thanks mate!
make a video about tune up
What color is your car?
good job dude!
+Taras Makarenko Thankyou!
Oh, how much I would love to hear straight pipes on that !
+Emir Hamidović I'm tempted haha. Waiting until I've finished my manual swap (still waiting on parts) before I touch my exhaust. My neighbours will hate me.
mine hate me too... but zero fucks :D
no body asks me if I want to sleep more on weekends but use chain saws at 8:00 AM
Hahaha!
I'm seeing an exhaust guy this week ;)
Niceeeee... Can't wait to see that video... And this days, I'm doing insane stuff on my E34, also expecting new Drift steering wheel from local Manufacturer :) I'll make video, you will then see how insane I am :D
In what part of the world are you?
Amazing video!
I know bmw..... But look online or in an owners manual for mercedes oil viscosity chart. Unless u live where it freezes use 20- 50 when you get it back together.. Before anyone says bad idea look for yourself .
Ok 740🥰👍
Because the oil pan is longer than shows in video ???
that's a heavy oil 20w60..
+Nizar Ahmad I live in a very hot climate :)

Nizar Ahmad yup I run 20w-50 and I feel I need to let it warm up more in the morning with it since it gets close to 0 but then 30-35 during the day
Nice...
I wouldn't trust the application of Loctite in that oil-soaked environment. In that critical application it would be best to dismount the oil pump and drill out all the bolt heads and one nut for safety wire.
Hmmmm i am thinking the same here.....i have m62b44....1996.....and the oil light its somethimes flikering
There's lots of sludge on this engine. Need to do an engine flush before each oil change.
