"As if every thought that tumbles through your head was so clever it would be a crime for it not to be shared" - describes today's internet in the era of social media and comments perfectly.
Erica seems like a very cool girl to talk to, someone I'd love to ask questions about herself, where is Mark's one sided as fuck persona was all about him. For a genius he sure is a fucking idiot with women.
“As if every thought that tumbled through your head is so clever, it’s a crime for it not to be shared.” [Wow, This line definitely describes society today]
The social network is one of the greatest films I have ever seen. The fact that it’s about settling who actually brought this billion dollar company into fruition is mind blowing to me. It really makes you think just how much of a power struggle it was over an idea and other similar ideas.
Why does he say this? He wasn't able to apologize and he regrets being mean to her... but this somehow translates to him being more ambitious? Was he actually angry with her and this made him want to succeed more?
Ryswick the rejection motivated him to make the site into something far bigger than anyone else could imagine. She was in his head even at the end of the movie so that’s why it’s safe to infer this conversation made a big impact on him needing to do something big with his life.
Ryswick I think its because Facebook despite being a success wasn't yet a big hit at the time. Erica even told Mark she wasn't aware of what project he was doing and thought he was designing a video game. That's why he felt the need to expand to get more people into it.
@@barbiquearea Maybe if this conversation didn't happen the way it was, there would be no expansion, who knows? Yet, the irony of life comes up and shows that no expansions can overcome love. The best line in all of this, “I don’t want to be rude to my friends.” That uppercut of a line is the real contrast between Erica and Mark. Mark has no friends or loses his friends because he is snide, rude, selfish, and cruel.
@@Spaceman_7 Did he end up in a decent position? Sitting on a laptop alone after a deposition constantly refreshing his ex girlfriends facebook profile to see that she still hasn't accepted his friend request? Lmao
I love how she doesn't leave the table. She confronts him right in front of her friends. 👍 "I was nice to you, don't torture me for it." Even after everything he wrote on his blog, she kept her cool and didn't explode on him.
…I mean, she should’ve been up for an Oscar that year. A short performance like this, that really affects the main character was SO important to the Zuckerberg’s arch in this film. Her two scenes were brilliant!
Mark is portrayed as a vengeful egomaniac in this movie, The need to expand is a direct response to Erica's "Good luck with your... video game" line. He's gonna shut her snarky mouth with the success of the project she didn't even want to hear about.
jlstr Exactly. He accepts this rejection as though it were impersonal, that it could be remedied by more success, it completely goes over his head that it is his character that lost Erica. Because she can’t be persuaded by him, he lets it fuel his obsessive need for more acceptance. He has to feel like he will “show her” in order to get somewhere. Mark probably still stews in decades old rejections, he is the type.
I think Aaron Sorkin described it perfectly on the script _"Good luck with your...videogame"_ It was an honest mistake on ERICA’s part but a kidney punch to MARK. In some ways I really do feel sorry for Mark in this scene, he was an asshole but I'm pretty sure he wanted to apologize.
He definitely deserved that tho! Yes, I'm sure he was going to apologize but he should've just said it to her instead of insisting they should "talk alone". He publicly embarrassed her, so he lost her respect and in return she puts him in his place.
Today's society traced at its best in such an incredible picture. Also, a big shout out to the composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for their contribution to the drama. Sometimes, the music can bring so much to the story that even when you might lose the focus of the conversation, yet you can't stand the obscurity of the circumstances that surround this movie. Regardless of what's being pure dramatization or not, things should be nicer on the Facebook world... But we all know that it is not... And even some of its creators are, to a certain extent, feeling sorry for what it has become now adays.
Pretty much, he wanted to impress her after getting dumped and by extension the whole Facebook idea (in the movie's story that is) was his attempt at that. In the opening scene he wants to join one of elite clubs, saying they're exclusive and if you're included it leads to a better life. Once he comes up with a project that can potentially make him rich and affluential he uses it as a vehicle to impress others, to become "big". In this scene Erica shows her values are elsewhere and she won't overlook his motives or be easily impressed by success.
You know I really hate the things Mark did to Erica but Eduardo is a good friend for assuring him he did the right thing here. What you did was unforgivable but the best thing you could do is apologize since there’s nothing more you can do. And you did that. I applaud you. like they say, what comes around goes around so you’ll have to take the heat of what you did whilst taking the right steps forward. And that’s all that matters.
I know that Erica's character is not real but this is what future is. People writing codes on laptop are the ones who are running the biggest companies of the world. Those who do parties and hangout will probably figure this out when they are 30+ and realize that they wasted time. What Mark did is what everyone wants to do today so what she thought back then does not matter or apply to current generation. Mark reinvented the Internet by creating facebook. People dont think of this but Mark is the Einstein or Newton of this era and whatever he did to someone back then is absolutely nothing compared to what he has built.
Hassan Khan no he is definitely not. He created a successful website and not everybody wants to do that. Also the point is she doesn’t really care about what he’s doing or who he will become because he is a bad person and he’s an asshole and deep down he knows that as well. It doesn’t really matter how rich you are or what you have if you’re not a good person you will still end up lonely and alone. Which is what his charter is terrified off so he just dives into new ideas. He created a website that’s hardly Einstein or Newton. Technology is changing our society not Facebook.
Hassan Khan, do you assume everyone's dream is to do coding? People like different things. That's one of the things that makes them human. Sure, the money was good, but there are plenty of fields that pays well and 'lets you be happy'. Thats the mist important thing.
Ironically at the end of the movie Erika also made a Facebook account, even when it was created by his misogynistic ex boyfriend, she just followed her sheep friends. She’s just a satire of the blind middle class
Or, because she got over it because people make mistakes especially when they are young. After all, she was mean enough to him too. At the bar she said dating him is like daring a stairmaster. She called him a nerd. She called him an asshole. The difference is he insulted her back, but on his blog rather than in person. Not that it matters since this is fiction, she doesn't even exist lol.
Question is if she even cared if it was made by Mark. It's possible this scene is meant to show she's unimpressed by success and affluence (she gets offended when Mark says she doesn't have to study because she goes to BU), but you do have a point - she surely would have heard about Facebook being Mark's website and ignoring his past actions is a bit out of character here.
A lot of people have Facebook. She can have a Facebook and still think Mark's an insufferable narcissist at the same time. Count me in that club as well lol. It's not that much of a win for Mark in the end. People that powerful may be "winning" in their careers, but often in life they're very unhappy people. This part of the film is obviously fictional, but I picture Zuckerberg to be a similar way.
