Hey man, nice video. I really resonate with your impression of Elden Ring, and I sunk many many hours into it. Even though I am aware that this is not the main point of your video, I feel the need to add the following: Yuka Kitamura is praised for all the right reasons and she did amazing work on previous soul titles. But, here's the thing, she is not the sole composer for Elden Ring's soundtrack. The five artists that worked on it are, in no particular order, Tsukasa Saitoh, Shoi Miyazawa, Yoshimi Kudo, Yuka Kitamura, and Tai Tomisawa. Again, Yuka Kitamura does amazing work, but giving all the praise to her when it's actually a group of people who worked on the soundtrack doesn't sit right with me. Especially since this seems to get overlooked by a lot of people.
@@penriplays No worries! Also, I'm glad that Elden Ring clicked for you. Not only playing through the game itself but realizing that you just got what soulsborne is about is so amazing. I wish everyone who played those game would get it like you did.
Dark souls for me.... And I'm 43.... Now I'm hooked on all the souls games. And elden ring was really something special.. Started playing fromsoft games in 2019 and I'm completely hooked now.. Play them every year.. Including elden ring
Same here. I used to hate souls games, but for some reason they always caught my attention and it took me finishing ds1 two times for them to finally click with me and fell in love with them
I know exactly how you feel. Elden Ring was the first game I truly enjoyed since the ps2 era. This game excited me as much as when I was a teenager booting up Kingdom Hearts and FFX. That's how much love I have for this game, so much so that it's added to my God tier list
Title: 'I FINALLY understand Souls games' Video: I like Elden Ring, I can't tell what makes it good, but I like it ... :/ Nice video, I much appreciate and respect sharing personal feelings and opinion, only that I was expecting something different from the title and waiting all this time for explanation what is the secret of Souls games, how to get into them, etc.
Same with me, played ds3 and demon souls but got bored very quick. But after playing elden ring I came back and played them and loved them. Now I have played every souls game aleast 3 times
Penri 😭😭 After hearing your struggles about getting into souls games for years now it's nice to see that one of them finally clicked and now you *get it* 🎉 great editing too, now I need MORE
My first souls game was Dark souls 3. Left it halfway because life. Years later, my brother bought Sekiro, I played some but left it again because I wasn't into the japanese aesthetic. I tried playing Bloodborne and got bored and left that too (inspite of it being in my wishlist since DS3). Eventually, I tried sekiro again and completed it. Later I completed re7 which led me to play bloodborne again because horror. I platinumed bloodborne, I then platinumed sekiro. Then I played Elden Ring and platinumed that too. Like you, I didn't feel like completing any of the soulsborne games that I tried despite me being a huge fan of them. All of their games I've tried first, got bored, and then come back years later to absolutely love them.
Huh this is an interesting and weird take for me... I think elden ring was a huge disappointment, but you should know that your approach and introduction to fromsoft are very different from mine, and I'll tell my story: I started with Bloodborne in early-mid 2017 and loved it, and over time it has grown to become my favorite game of all time, followed closely by Breath of the Wild, then I tried getting into Dark Souls 3 a couple of times but didn't vibe with it for a long time... that is until march 2018, and I remember loving it almost as much as Bloodborne. A month or so later, Dark Souls Remastered came out and it was my least favorite of the 3 at the time, but now it's my second favorite just behind Bloodborne. When Sekiro came out in march 2019, I really liked it but it was easily my least favorite of the 4 fromsoft games I've played (which just goes to show how much I loved the other ones), I prefered the traditional fromsoft interconnected level design, Sekiro's setting didn't vibe with me as much as Dark Souls and Bloodborne's setting, and on top of that I loved making my own character in these games and using different weapons rather than playing as a character fromsoft had chosen for me. That being said, Sekiro has always been in my top 10 favorite games since it launched so it's still a 10/10 for me because of the goated gameplay, bosses, and in hindsight; how original it was as a new fromsoft IP. And now we've come to elden ring... ugghhh god where do I begin... First of all, it's important to know that the hype created for this game and the amount of sales it sold, were affacted by fromsoft's reputation with previous games because they were and still are that good. elden ring's commercial success was built upon the success of previous games for a reason. I was extremely hyped in 2019 and especially in 2021 after the E3 gameplay trailer. I thought that this game could finally be the game that has the potential to dethrone both Bloodborne and Breath of the Wild as not just the best fromsoft game and best open world game I had ever played, but also become my new favorite game of all time, knowing well what fromsoft were capable of with previous titles and my trust in them as one of the few companies I still trusted at the time. That would however change when the game launched: My jaw dropped when I realized how much it recycled not only content from it's own game, but from previous games as well. For me, less is more in fromsoft and elden ring is the definition of more is less. I somehow thought FromSoft were capable of creating something that is amazing again, or at the very least good. And despite what I felt about Sekiro at it's launch, now I can really appreciate it being able to distinguish itself from Souls and I respect that it's actually able to justify the existence of its own IP, to the extent that I now consider it better than Dark Souls 3, moving up from my 4th to my 3rd favorite fromsoft game. To compare it with Sekiro, it's obvious elden ring could've just been Dark Souls 4 mechanically speaking, because the gameplay plays the same, it didn't offer any new crucial mechanic to the table like Bloodborne and Sekiro did, it's literally just "what if we made another dark souls again, but it's in an open world this time?" and what new it offered (horse, wondrous physick, spirit summons) ain't something that couldn't have been implemented in a potential Dark Souls 4, with a couple of lore explanations to justify their existence. The UI is the same as a Souls game which doesn't exactly help it's case trying to be a new IP, it reuses it's content waaayyy more than any previous game, many players never even summoned in previous games and it wasn't even an option in Sekiro (still won GOTY 2019 btw) so catacombs and spirit summon rewards was useless for people like me and was only a cheap way to fill the world with content because according to that game "more equals better". I would go as far as to say that elden ring is fromsoft trying to make a Ubisoft game intentionally, and for me it's embarassing that fromsoft actually went through with it. I think I'm gonna wrap this up soon but I'll name a few more things that saddens me to say, but it's true: 1) All the bosses are the same and you fight them the same way whether they're repeats or one of the very few unique fights, and all of them are fought in a big square or circle arena where they bombard you with attack combos one after the other, while you're left with slow Dark Souls gameplay because fromsoft refuse to evolve the gameplay for their new IPs. Dark Souls-style of combat was crafted for Dark Souls 1 enemy/boss speed, and while Dark Souls 3 was also fast and pushed that combat system's speed to it's limit, elden ring went way to far with it on the aggressive-scale of bosses and enemies, resulting in a frustrating version of Dark Souls combat that tries to lure you to use summons even if you don't want to and think they're useless, in order to gaslight you into thinking they're there to help with bosses WHEN (not if) you struggle, to "justify" their existence. 2) As an open world RPG, it's surprisingly shallow when comparing it to real RPGs, even Breath of the Wild which isn't even an RPG has some RPG elements you don't find in elden ring, like environmental consequences based on if where you're going is cold or hot weather for your character, or having the option to customize your horse. Torrent remains the same through the entirety of elden ring both visually and usefullness, he doesn't even have a personality which makes him just a boring "go-from-point-A-to-point-B-fastest-way-possible"-option. I also believe open worlds shines brightest when you're free to do or go where you want whenever you want. You can climb, ride, glide and other ways of traversal players have discovered you can do in Breath of the Wild's Hyrule, and nothing is locked behind another area. Elden ring's open world is more like a set of small islands; limgrave, caelid, liurnia, altus, mountaintops/snowfield. From where you start the game (limgrave), you can only go to ONE area in the east in caelid, while the rest of the game is in a linear path to the north through liurnia, then altus, then mountaintops, again, all on a lonely horse riding miles upon miles without finding anything worthwhile doing. 3) I could mention all the bosses it reuses but it'd take way too long and one only needs to reflect on the game to know what 'm talking about to understand what I mean, so I'll just mention the most weird ones (from what I can remember) nobody would ever think fromsoft would reuse; godrick, margit (3 times), mohg and godfrey. To compare with previous games, imagine reuse 6 of the key bosses everybody loves, that screams quantity over quality.
What s fantastic video- Elden Ring was the first fromsoft game I finished too (i tried DS3 and just never got that far) but after ER I finished that one and its DLCs ❤
Very similar expierience here man. Now on my 4th Elden Ring and 2dn Dlc playthrough. Inbetween finished Demon soul's remake, Sekiro, Bloodborne, Dark souls 3 and thinking about DS and DS2 now.

I just replayed DS3 and it’s still amazing although bosses do feel much much easier. One shot Midir and Gael and died ones to NK. After the insanity of ER they feel like they have huge punish windows, which I didn’t mind
I only own Demons Souls original, DS Remake, Sekiro, Bloodborne and Elden Ring. I haven’t played any of the Dark Souls games but I might buy the physical trilogy soon
I purchased a ps3 for demons souls and was hooked. I’m 46 been playing games my entire life, no developer has captured my imagination the way Miyazaki has. It ruined other games for me.
Elden ring is a great game. But the game is made by combining the good parts of the previous games. So it is weird that you don't enjoy the previous ones but you enjoy Elden Ring.
Nah, I get it. I've played Dark Souls I and tried to get into Dark Souls III and Sekiro, but while I did enjoy them, they didn't suck me in like Elden Ring did. The missing ingredient was the world and the exploration. Dark Souls I came the closest with its amazing level design, but ER was still way more magical. I remember how happy I was when the DLC came out and I could enjoy new content again. I just rode around and took in the world and was content with my life.
I dont think you will enjoy the other souls games lol. Since what you like about elden ring seems to be the open world, which i can totally relate to. Just like you I bought Bloodborne, since everybody is praising it so hard. I just couldnt enjoy it for whatever reason. I tried twice but dropped it both times after 30min or something like that
@@penriplaysas someone that started getting into the series with the original Demons Souls, i can say that what you've heard is entirely wrong, its probably even the easiest The reason people can struggle with it is simply because the game barely tells you about its major gameplay system that impacts difficulty the most (World Tendency) Also Demons Souls was only the second hardest one for me due to being something completely new To be fair Ive tried DS1 first before Demons Souls but ended up dropping the game in a couple hours for the same reason as you So when I tried Demons Souls, I was still just Fat-rolling thro the game with two weapons on my inventory and with all my stats around 25 😂 I even spent an entire week stuck in a boss fight and had to go explore other areas just to kill it with magic (which felt pretty hollow) The game was still pretty easy, like all the bossfights are pretty simple and while the areas can be challenging, most of them are still quite short compared to the other souls games So basically, the game can only be hard if ur not aware about a single mechanic. But even without being aware of it, the game its still going to be pretty easy for the most part due to how simple and basic the enemies and bosses are.
This is my 3rd souls like (lords of the fallen 2023, Dark Souls 3, Elden Ring, in that order) and I can comfortably say that it’s the best game I’ve ever played (I’m 44 so there is also probably recency bias) There is just so much to do, but it never feels like you are repeating yourself or doing something pointless. I’m 120 hours in, just finished Mountaintop of the Giants, and never once didn’t it feel like was I grinding. Just organically clearing the map. And when you play like this, the game is just at times challenging, but never really difficult - I haven’t actually struggled on a boss (maybe 10 attempts on some long forgotten boss - Valiant Gargoyles maybe). I’m sure Malenia will however be a proper challenge
Glad see you enjoy these games as a long time lover of these game types I am glade to see them still attract new players also if you like this I suggest you play the dlc next that will take a while as well
Souls games are not the ones that did it, it was actually Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze that made me appreciate gaming again. Game had stellar level design, stellar music, felt good to play.
That unique feel that you expressed, the one you can't describe: It's my lifeblood. There has ever only been a few games that have given me that same feeling, and they are right at the top of my favorite games list. My top three games are Outer Wilds, Elden Ring and Hollow Knight. All of those games have completely different gameplay, but all of them hit that spot for me. The way I word that feeling, is the feeling of witnessing a world that's alive, not a mere video game. All those worlds feel truly lived in. They feel like things can happen even if you're not there to witness them. They feel like your expectation of what comes next is always wrong. They all have moments that blew my mind and made me question the limits of what a video game can make me feel. They made me feel true wonder. They are no mere games, they are worlds. I can't promise that liking one guarantees that you'll like the others, but if it's that specific feeling that you find yourself chasing, those are the games I recommend. All of them deliver it in different ways and feel a little different, but the feeling is there in all of them. It's that feeling, and that feeling alone, why I'm exited for Silksong. Of course Elden Ring has much more to it too. What I said largely only applies to first playthroughs, yet despite that fact I've spent well over 700h on this game playing it again and again. To me it's the combat that keeps me coming back, as this game has almost perfected it for me. That gameplay is what I keep coming back to Elden Ring, but it's not the reason why I stayed when I first started.
You may want to try Dark Souls3 first. It feels closest to Elden Ring. And it has the best music of all the games (except Bloodborne), all from Yuka Kitamura.
That fair everyone is different personally I think sekiro is the “most different” souls game fromsoft made to me it more like a action/rhythm game with light soulsbourne elements
huh… I guess I played a different Elden Ring. mine had copy-pasted bosses, useless crafting materials instead of actual loot, mandatory vigor levelling, and a tedious field of nothingness in the second half of the game. still loved it overall, but for every bit of fun there was an equal amount of frustration.
I wouldn't call all of them garbage but yeah i agree there is a lot of them complaining about the same problems Even the legit ones The only criticism video that was kinda fresh was that one where they criticisized about the game engine and optimization problems
I get it. I've played all the ones you mentioned and that clip was perfect. Booooring. The only difference is elden ring was also boooooooring. I'm totally happy that people like these games, but I can't help but think these games are... well... bad. They just don't play well.
It takes maturity to realize there is a difference between, "I don't like this, therefore it is bad" and "my Ritalin addiction and severe inability to focus on something for longer than 3 seconds if it doesn't explode constantly renders me unable to enjoy great works of art." I think you're the second one.

@@micklucas1451 😂 no disrespect! I've just heard it's really hard!
@@penriplaysas someone that started getting into the series with the original Demons Souls, i can say that what you've heard is entirely wrong, its probably even the easiest
The reason people can struggle with it is simply because the game barely tells you about its major gameplay system that impacts difficulty the most
(World Tendency)
Also Demons Souls was only the second hardest one for me due to being something completely new
To be fair Ive tried DS1 first before Demons Souls but ended up dropping the game in a couple hours for the same reason as you
So when I tried Demons Souls, I was still just Fat-rolling thro the game with two weapons on my inventory and with all my stats around 25 😂
I even spent an entire week stuck in a boss fight and had to go explore other areas just to kill it with magic (which felt pretty hollow)
The game was still pretty easy, like
all the bossfights are pretty simple and while the areas can be challenging, most of them are still quite short compared to the other souls games
So basically, the game can only be hard if ur not aware about a single mechanic.
But even without being aware of it,
the game its still going to be pretty easy for the most part due to how simple and basic the enemies and bosses are.
Caelid does look a bit like Wales
This is my 3rd souls like (lords of the fallen 2023, Dark Souls 3, Elden Ring, in that order) and I can comfortably say that it’s the best game I’ve ever played (I’m 44 so there is also probably recency bias)
There is just so much to do, but it never feels like you are repeating yourself or doing something pointless.
Glad see you enjoy these games as a long time lover of these game types I am glade to see them still attract new players also if you like this I suggest you play the dlc next that will take a while as well
@ I’ll definitely be playing the DLC 🙏
Souls games are not the ones that did it, it was actually Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze that made me appreciate gaming again. Game had stellar level design, stellar music, felt good to play.
play ds3 next. you will love it
Many people say I need to play that one. I'd say, from the comments, that's the best DS game?
from software games are the only ones to which i come always back, since the release of ds prepare to die on pc.
Did you also play the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion? If not, get it, it is spectacular.
@@bretthopper88 It is bought, but currently lives on the ever growing pile of games I need to play. But I will get to it!
it's a flawed dlc, but the highs are reaaaaaallly high.
And has lots of peaks as well!
What platform did you finish it on ?
PS5. I know I said PS4 in the video, my bad 😅
@@penriplays nah thats cool i just noticed the ui looked different
Agreed about the DS3 OST. Its incredible.
I tried dark souls 1 and 3 and i hated them but when i tried sekiro it turned into my fav game of all time , i still dont get soulsbourne games tho
That fair everyone is different personally I think sekiro is the “most different” souls game fromsoft made to me it more like a action/rhythm game with light soulsbourne elements
Best game ever
@@JavierArochoVega hard to disagree with that statement
@ It's fair!!! But doesn't change the truth!!!
Wukong got me into hard games. Now i am smashing Sekiro and having a blast.
Fromsoft single handedly ruined playing action rpg and sword fighting game for me
👏
Play totk and botw❤
@@Redknight01 I have. They were great. BOTW is my preferred one
best open world games of all time
Guy makes a video about a good game and not bash it in an douchy elitist way? Bro you have my thumbs up!
Ah thank you man. Appreciate it.
huh… I guess I played a different Elden Ring. mine had copy-pasted bosses, useless crafting materials instead of actual loot, mandatory vigor levelling, and a tedious field of nothingness in the second half of the game. still loved it overall, but for every bit of fun there was an equal amount of frustration.
every copy of elden ring is personalized
Copy-pasted bosses and a lot of useless loot - true.
Mandatory vigor leveling - false
You needed light and color to appreciate Souls games? 🤨🤔🤷
Because its an openworld game, u not gonna like dark souls after u taste elden ring 😅 trust me...
A positive elden ring video in this economy of garbage ‘critiques’? Sign me up homie
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed
I wouldn't call all of them garbage but yeah i agree there is a lot of them complaining about the same problems
Even the legit ones
The only criticism video that was kinda fresh was that one where they criticisized about the game engine and optimization problems
Boring...Deleteeeee 😆
@aarondimoff5180 why do you think that?
Hello?
yeah elden ring is not as good as a lot of people think
