I first saw them live in Japan in 2006 and knew absolutely nothing about them except they looked like some metal band in the advertising posters so I decided to go but I wasn't prepared for what they delivered at all. I thought it was gonna be your typical metal band but it absolutely wasn't. Truly amazing live show, one of the best for sure.

I would always highly recommend to hear the songs with english subs, because their songs live from their lyrics literally.
This athmosphere you can feel is even more haunting and immersive with the lyrics. The music and the tone and intensity of the expression of the voice: all is completely perfect presented for the lyrics.
As good as every Dir En Grey song is translated with english subs on youtube. I recommend Kaya Channel for subbed songs.
Their lyrics are amazing and let you deeply feel the band! They are also live much better than on album and a blast! They coming again to europe in spring 2024.
I had the luck to saw them many times in Japan and Germany.
Also they exist since 1997 and in same band member formation.
They changed musically and visually drastically over the years, from their beginning in Visual kei, then going more metal/rock, then more western style ( they made a family values tour with Korn back then and the singer made a live collab with Apocalyptica) and then progressive metal to develop their own unique style.
The singer improved drastically over the years and also the lyrics became more and more deep. He often expressing with figurative lyrics. In my opinion Arche is their best Album lyrically and musically. ( 2014). Actually they have 11 studio albums released until now.

I listen to this band since 15 years and no other band made this strong, deep connection to me which captured my inner feelings and heart so much.
I dont know where I would be without their music.

These songs are all ballads. Of course they have more metal style songs. But the ballads are always so intense and pure out of the heart. The singer (Kyo) write most of the songs by his own, also the other band members.

They said about themselves that their music is not for everyone, but these who understand their music know the meaning strongly. They dont put themselves into a genre. It is the Dir En Grey genre.
Some songs are personal songs from the singer, some are from other perspectives and all are more or less all questioning the human being, suffering, mistakes and sorrows and the question of life.

Since you are now familiar with their more complex and moody songs, I would recommend a ballad and something more usual for a metal scene (if ‘usual’ can even be applied to these guys)
Namamekashiki ansoku tamerai ni hohoemi is my all-time favorite ballad by them. There is an awesome live version translated into English by Kaya. It’s deeply emotional and blue in a beautiful way
As for the more simply structured songs, I absolutely love Repetition of hatred, also translated by Kaya. I think it’s a very fun one
