Steven Page sings Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" at Jack Layton's State Funeral
Aug 27 2011 - (Kevin Hearn on Piano - Kevin Fox on Cello)
Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"
I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but still you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Baby I've been here before
I know this room, and I've walked this floor
You see I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But Love is not just some victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
Remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Oh maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
See it's not a cry you can hear at night
It's not somebody who has seen the light
It's a cold and a very broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
But see, I don't even know the name
If I did, well really, what's it to you?
Because there's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
A friend of mine, a Canadian, a musician and sound engineer who bled music, passed away today. I happened upon this performance, which I'd forgotten about. And it's nearly perfect to help a little tonight. Thank you, Steven, and rest in peace, Mr. Layton.
Sorry for your loss.
This song always moves me, and Steve always sings with so much emotion. AWESOME version!
His voice and artistry take my breath away every time. One of my lifelong heroes, for so many reasons. Steven, please keep doing what you do.
I met Jack many times. He always treated me like a billion bucks. He made me feel like I could get off my reserve and make a better future for my community. He was right. He encouraged me to leave and go to school, I just graduated. he passed 3 months into my nursing program. When i graduate this NOV I'm going to pin a picture of him over my heart. If I never met him, and if he didnt go out of his way to keep contacting me to support me and my dreams i wouldn't be here as proud as I am today
merci beaucoup, thank you what an amazing man, as a full grown man i've never cried so much over anything.
Wonderful tribute.
I think that Jack Layton would definitely disagree with you.
Little known fact: k.d lang's version of this song was playing in Mr Layton's room on the morning of his passing. This is why they had Steven Page sing it at the funeral. Brings tears to my eyes every time.
Steven Page is one of the greatest voices Canada has produced.I hope the family of Jack Layton enjoyed his rendition of this classic Canadian song.
You don't know how many times I have come here to listen to this since I found it. Thank you. It's a cold and very broken Hallelujah! Leonard Cohen, what can you say? Steven Page's rendition is absolute perfection to me. I feel it, how can you not?
Omg, I never imagined I'd ever hear him sing this song. I've got tears pouring down my face. Thank you so much for sharing this.
I think that Steven Page is so good that nobody seems to realize that Kevin Hearn is playing the piano here! Glad they are still in touch. RIP Leonard Cohen :(
Wrong page ! This about Jack Layton !
I love that Kevin is part of this. I miss BNL without Steve.
"I did my best, though it wasn't much. I couldn't feel, so I learned to touch. I told the truth; I didn't come to fool you. And even though it all went wrong, I'll stand before the lord of song with nothing on my tongue but hallelujah".
Jack was cut down far too soon.
That voice was my childhood. The very first tape I ever bought with my own allowance was "Rock Spectacle."
GIVE IT UP GOOGLE NOT HAPPENING Same. 'Cept it was a gift for my tenth birthday.
steven page's voice makes me shiver. so much power. so much talent.
Arguably my greatest vocal influence, in 22 years of singing as a concert vocalist
Not only the best version of the song, but a perfect display of a unique, powerful vocalist
All BNL controversy aside, Page is a great influence and hero to me - I hope he realizes the value, influence, and power he's always had to help others - with his voice.
"Your music saved my life" -- Page, I was holding that sign in St. Louis 6 years ago -- you nodded to me, said thank you and handed me your guitar pick.
I didn't think anybody could do better singing this song than Jeff Buckley but Steven Page did an absolutely amazing job. I had shivers running down my spine because it was so good.
I remember the year Jack Layton died. I was sad, even if i didn't agree with all his views. He was the only politician who had earned my respect, and he died just three years before i could vote for him.... Three years before i could say i voted for a man i respected as a human being, politician or not. He was a good man, and i wish more people in his line of work were like him.... Jack Layton i will miss you. I hope one day that someone will fill your shoes, and bring back the best damn opposition Canada ever had! Until then, Goodnight Mr. Layton
One of the most moving songs and one of the most powerful voices in popular music. Thanks for posting this.
Brilliant vocal. This should be a lesson for every aspiring singer. Obviously incredibly gifted with a great sounding voice. There are 10 million other great voices in the world. He knows how to sing a song, and that makes all the difference. I could listen to him all day.
Still hurts to this day. ;(
He was a genuine man!
well jennb752 7 Steven just lost a good friend and probably had a hard time keeping it together ...I think he did a wonderful job and what a nice tribute to a good friend....I think your coke and booze comments are mean spirited and uncalled for ....Well done Steven
My husband suggested I watch this performance. I am in tears. A beautiful rendition of Leonard's song. Thank you.
This very beautiful. Thank you Steven Page.
I wept bitterly when I saw this on TV back when that great man died. That's how I know I'm Canadian
greatest vocalist ever
Brian Gilstrap better than Freddy Mercury?
Well, Karen, he's a very different vocalist than Freddy. Freddy is bombast and EPICNESS, while Steven is much more subdued and (IMO) has more pathos. Freddy's what you listen to when you want to be cheered up, because even his sad songs have a level of grandeur that makes you want to pump your fist more than cry. Steven's what you listen to when you want to feel . . . I don't even know, melancholy? Even his happiest songs have an undercurrent of depression that I think you can hear in his voice. They're both exceptionally talented, just at different things.
(I realize I did to an extent conflate songwriting with singing, and that's my bad. It's just hard to describe the mood of a voice/song without getting into the writing.)
Look up Mike Patton my friend
I'm not religious but I keep coming back here to listen to this...
My second favorite version of this song, the best one is by KD Lang IMHO....if she and Steven did a duet of this song??? HOLY CRAP would that be amazing! Thanks for sharing!
I wish we didn't lose Jack :( One of the people that could've made canada better :(
Julie Delahooke I agree,
I love this version that Page sings ... it is the best
Is that Kevin Hearn playing the piano?
+CatchBinKill
Yes it is :)
YES!!!
and KH is the backup vocals
This performance still brings tears to my eyes five years later. Powerful.
this reminds me what a remarkable song this is. a stunningly unique rendition by page and a very poignant, personal tribute to a man, a canadian, who will truly missed in so many ways. jack layton had the singular, magical gift of inspiration and we owe it to him to carry on.
I had just a couple of brushes with Jack Layton, back when he was a Toronto City Councillor. I was making a presentation in the chambers on a very small issue, but one important to me at the time. Everyone was almost asleep before it even was my turn to speak, and gave me little attention, except for one Councillor. He listened, he got enthused, he asked questions, he thanked me for coming. He was the only one. I walked out thinking to myself ... who was that guy ? It was Jack. The next time, he was dressed up as William Lyon Mackenzie for some reason. Kissed my baby daughter. Miss him.
Jack Layton was an honest politician.......a true man of the people.
One of the most moving pieces ever, this is as good as the original. Steven did Mr. Cohen's song proud.
@JayBrew391 Me too... with the robogate scandal happening right now, who's to know that maybe Jack might have won the election after all. The country really needs another leader like him...
Thankyou so much Stephen Page for continuing your career after BNL. You were a shining star in that band and you've continued solo and helped them carry on without you. You're an inspiration to everyone. No hatred. All love. I wish the press could have seen the happiness you gave your fans before they decided they wanted to make a quick buck. Come back to the UK soon. Please.
A great song made more remarkable by an unparalleled talent.
I've said it before.... Every singer should learn from Steven Paige about to how to sing a song with emotion and FEEL. This song was great before Steven Paige was a star, and then he shows why he's a star. This video should be a seminar for singers. THIS is how you sing a song.
great to see steve and kevin back together playing this song. awesome
This is beautiful. From what I've read about Mr. Layton, he sounds like the type of politician we could greatly benefit from here in the States.
great song, great artist..
great leader in Layton.
RIP.
Thanks for the upload
Well, IMO it was the BEST version of the song EVER...I finally understood & felt the words of the song and it was so very moving. Cohen...never IMO does justice to any song, he has a terrible voice.
i've replayed this video about 5 times in the past hour, i did the same thing two days ago. it's beautiful!
Having grown up in Toronto, I was fortunate enough to witness Jack's great work in city council. He stuck up for those without a voice in city hall. He brought this great work ethic to the House of Commons too. Jack never threw anyone overboard. I think it's appropriate that his funeral would include Steven Page. Page had a difficult time with a drug related incident several years before. Jack would never abandon a friend. I'm quite sure Steven's inculsion in this funeral was Jack's idea.
It was amazing watching it. Jack was such an amazing person, and the song is so amazing. I'm glad they picked Steven Page to sing it. RIP Jack Layton, you will be missed. Everybody stay loving hopeful and optimistic for Jack and Canada.
Great job. I still miss Jack Layton after all this time.
Beautiful, I miss Steven Paige!
never have I been more inspired by a man with politics, and I don't like politics, but I loved jack. I still follow his ideals, and wish all polititians could have had the heart and integrity that he had.
Beautiful, Touching. Today, this moment is amongst many, a beautiful way to honor Leanorad Cohen.
Very moving, indeed. Personally, kd Lang's version, moves me the most. Cohen's is a classic, no doubt. I adore Steven Pages voice, and always have.. I miss Jack every day. We must move forward with his message, and others before Jack, who inspired us to come together, united, for the people. #Occupy is one way. Volunteering, talking to people on the streets, whatever you choose, just DO something... Jack would be proud.
I watch this about once a month still... Very moving
Thank you for posting this marvelous rendition by the incredible Steve Page which now I suppose may be considered a tribute to both Jack and Leonard.
I seriously ugly cry every time I hear this, even more so for the loss of one of the greatest leaders this country had known!
i am now crying well sheeeeaaatt
I was home and listening to CBC broadcast... I was just crying myself out... what a beautiful rendition!
best prime minister we never had.
MatthewMalone, that'd be pretty impressive, since this song was written before Stephen Harper got involved in Canadian politics (as an aide to a MP - and yes, I'll admit, I had to look that up, I don't actually know as much as I should about Canadian politics).
At first, I was disappointed with this version, and I still think that the k.d. lang version is much better, as much as I was looking forward to this, being a big fan of the BNL and Steven Page. But as it went on, it grew on me. The tight harmony when there are multiple people singing in the chorus is absolutely great. And as Page starts getting into it, he really shows what he brings to what is a very good song. So even if I like lang's better, this is a very solid, and very different, version. Thanks!
His voice is so touching. I feel it in the heart of my soul when he sings this song to Jack Layton
Fell in lov with this song and Leonard Cohen :)
"but you dont care much for music, do ya?"
-kind of feels like a dig at harper, to me, in this context
I linked this to a friend who loves this song and even they went 'wow'. Steven did a breath taking performance.
Jack what a lost!
He belts this out. Great job!
And yet again a performance by Steven Page touched me so deeply I know that I'm a better person for it. Thank you, Steven.
R.I.P. dear Jack Layton.
Beautiful song. You Canadians are into this. Nice to see really.
It sent shivers down my spine! Thanks & God bless!
This is perfect. I love Steven Page and this song...great, great, great!
@ZeonMagna You should also check out KD Lang's version one of the best-GORD. gordspoetryfactory
Fell in lov with that song this day.
In regards to the song of choice and the artist of choice for the cover of it I must say, although truly an amazing performance I feel that 2 better renditions of this song exists, one being a performance by the Leonard himself, and the other is this ; ua-cam.com/video/AdyTXBT5CQE/v-deo.html . Personally I am not a religious person and am in fact very anti-religious but this song is still truly the most amazing song of all time and Stephen Page, though no longer with BNL, a group that he formed and wrote most their songs for and sang lead for most as well, is still an amazing vocalist and I'm glad that he did this performance and I'm truly glad that you uploaded it. I watch this about once a week just as a reminder of his and this songs wonder.
Beautiful and difficult song to perform i give Steven Page credit h did a awesome job and what if Jack Layton had not passed i believe he and Olivia would be living @24 Sussex Drive......MR Harper i don't hate upon you being the leader of this great country we live in is hard in deed but i disagree with many of the things your party has stood on and at times i have agreed and supported other things that you have.................Mr Layton may you forever rest in peace sir you contribution to Canadian Politics at the Municipal, Provincial and Federal Levels may never be duplicated
Beautiful.
Beautiful, loves me some Page.
Bare nacked ladies was kind of a douche band, but Steven Page was always it'ssaving grace.
RIP Leonard 😢
Wrong page !
Absolutely beautiful rendition.........So heartfelt and real.......Great job Steven....RIP Mr. Layton.......You were an exceptional human being........
Beautiful song and very well done by Mr. Page. Also, I have nothing but respect for Mr. Layton. He was a gift to our country and will be sadly missed. But I found this choice of song awkward if not inappropriate for a funeral.
I have no clue about Canada's politics, sadly, but I love steve page. I hate BNL without him. He is an amazing vocalist! His voice is so different and entertaining. I wish he was more popular... especially here in America
would be nice if we had someone like him as our PM, don't seeing it going to happen, conc, liber or ndp include greens, some one who loves our land and people not money.
Unfortunately, Jack was not Prime Minister. He was the leader of the opposition. Jack has the honour of being the first person to receive a state funeral who was not PM
I think most everyone should listen to the Cohen version before you judge this. It is completely different from Rufus or Jeff...
he looks like he's trying hard not to make it some kind of joke. Or like he has something he wants to say that would be totally inappropriate for the occasion.
Only in Jeff Buckley's mind it is. It's a Leonard Cohen song and I can't think of a single song or poem Leonard Cohen wrote that isn't layered with meaning.
in a way, Steve Page introduced me to Jack Layton. I was a young BNL fan boy and I heard Page was speaking at an event in Toronto. I went, met both Page and Layton, and the rest is orange history.
not my favorite singer, i think they could have gotten someone better but still, fabulous song choice. RIP jack :(
one of the best singers ever if you ask me. I actually feel like crying now
Am I a bad person for hoping that Kevin Hearn playing piano will result in a Steven Page/BNL reunion?
Great song and a great tribute. I will say K.D Lang nailed it though, you can't touch her rendition of it.
It's been a year now, and the wound is still deep and painful. Jack, why did you have to go? Jack. :/
Beautiful
Great Job Steve!!!!
beautiful rendition of this great song, amazing voice
i didn't even watch this yet and i already liked it ilu steven pls come back :'c
I just wanted to say, again, this is the best version of this song I've heard...and I think Mr. Page should record it so I can buy it on iTunes and listen to it all the time. :)
I'm not clear how a song about sex and spirituality (and the loss of both) makes sense at a funeral.
It was the song that was on the radio when Jack passed.
Eliezer Pennywhistler how is it not clear ? Seems pretty straight forward to me . And if jack wanted him to sing it does it matter if it's "clear" to you or not lol
The song is about finding God/spirituality in the worst of circumstances. It's not all cleaned up, dressed up Sunday morning church. God/The Spirit is with us to the depths of depression/misery/sadness.
This is my favorite interpretation of Hallelujah, Steven you are amazing!!!... ( sorry Leonard, but you're still one of my favorite singer)
Fabulous performance, thanks so much for posting the lyrics as well, it is really inspiring and enjoyable...
