    Recording: Neumann U87 to Fireface UFX to Protools.
    * The microphone was placed in the sweet spot, pointing right at the middle between the tweeter and the cone of each speakers.

      flecher new I can only speak for the A7X. The treble is brilliant, the bass is tight, but they resonate in the low mid in a way that is not very musical. But if you have a dampened studio with diffusors, which i don’t have, they might actually sound perfect. But i’m also currently in the mindset of wanting a bigger and more exciting sound. Something like a pair of Yamaha NS-1000, which i once had and loved.

    • @rBennich
      @rBennich 6 років тому

      Consider the size of the A7X. You get tight bass, but not the lowest end. For that you need something bigger. And subwoofers sucks for music, honestly.

    Sell your monitors and buy some acoustic treatment

    • @donpirla
      @donpirla 9 років тому +2

      i'm not so fanatical about acoustic treatment, i think it is partially (at least) marketing. i agree that a room should be treated IF it is unusual, different from average listening rooms and has a special problem. Tell me, do 99.999% people in their houses listen to music in acoustically treated rooms? will an album monitored in an anechoid chamber actually sound better when listened to in typical bedrooms and living rooms? i don't know. i suppose that if a tune sounds good on an untreated studio room, then it probably will sound good the same in a similar listener room. if it sounds awful without panels and bass traps in the studio, how could it then sound any good in a room without those?
      I'm not at all saying music recorded in acoustically treated places necessarily sound bad in untreated places, i just think that it takes more work to make it sound good if monitoring takes place in a room too different from the one where the music will be listened to. it takes more experienced engineers for sure in order to record music for listening places which are very different from the monitoring room of the studio. so, basically, a lot of acousting treatment only makes life harder, but help keep studio engineers cost higher.

    As many commenters have already stated, there are obvious limitations to a listening test like this. Another problem for me was the lack of variety in the music, and the absence of a vocal track. That said, I appreciated the comparison anyway. Like many others, I found the KRK's to be harsh, and A8X's to be the most balanced of the three.

  • @Pettroh
    @Pettroh 10 років тому +25

    You simply cannot judge the speakers by listen to it when its recorded trough another mic and then listened to with another device. Thats just plain stupid. You have to listen to them with your own ears if you really want to hear if they differ, and what they sound like.

    • @ThereWasNoFreeName

      That's why it's called comparison, so you can hear the diffirence between them. Of course you won't hear exactly how they sound, but if you know how one of these sounds - you can compare to another.

    • @stevesearsmusic
      @stevesearsmusic 10 років тому +3

      ThereWasNoFreeName No! It doesn't compare ANYTHING! Did you do science at school? Look at the variables in this scenario: (1) 'The microphone was placed in the sweet spot, pointing right at the middle between the tweeter and the cone of each speakers' - have you ever mic'd a speaker up? Even a 1/4" in mic movement will completely change the sound. (2) The clips are different volumes. Also, what would be a 'good' sound? No idea what the original sounds like but it sounds like a badly mixed piece of nonsense. More importantly: OUR EARS ARE NOT U87's.

    • @donpirla
      @donpirla 9 років тому +1

      i think the only thing stupid here is your comment. 1) what do you mean with "another mic"?. the same mic was used for capturing all the monitor pairs. 2) of course any passage in the audio path changes the sound, and your hears and your brain - brain? you? - have their own performances, they interpret the sounds just as a microphone does. of course, adding a microphone to the chain reduces the fidelity of anything passes through it, but if such path can still show big differences among the speakers - and it does - then why shouldn't such test be useful? of course it doesn't help if you wish to judge a speaker in an absolutele way, but such tests do help to spot the rough differences at least. my only concern is directing the mic at a point betweeb the tweer and woofer: i guess - but i'm not sure - that, just as with your hears, the mic should be directet at the tweeters, since the lower frequences are less directional, while the higher frequences are very directional. Also, the position of the speakers would better change according to the speaker models, and since the sweet spot is a vertex of such equilateral triangle, it should change too. Then i think the test would show the differences closely to perfection, because it would simulate exaclty the normal monitoring job.

  • @jezzyby4783
    @jezzyby4783 11 років тому +4

    I agree with most of the statements on this test, but you can get the overall idea i think, no-one in their right mind would spend that much money on speakers without giving them a proper test at the store, but the KRKs sound to me like i would be going mad with that top end after one 3 minute song. I couldn't stand that sound for very long.

    im pretty sure that you've picked by now but vx8 is a nice overall speaker but has more of that mid range for your vocals and instruments that stand out in that area which is not bad because those are usually the hardest to mix .....so to hear every detail in that spectrum is critical but the adam ax8 is the best overall its range from big to low is incredible

    lol. This review seems messed up. I have Adam a7x and it's super clean, awesome soundstage & details. I can barely imagine a speaker in that price range being better than them. I was hearing details, I never heard on my headphones Audeze LCD-3 and Shure SRH 1840 and that's a performance hard to beat. Last but not the least it had the instrument separation & 3 dimensional sound I was seeking. Also some instruments felt pretty real and some songs, it felt as if the singer were singing in front of you in your room esp with a slightly forward sounding dac. If you want something better than them, you'll probably have to go for speakers over 4k price range. And the mids on Adams are amazing. If i move from A7x, it'll either be S3X-V or classic-column-mk3 or perhaps GoldenEar Triton One. But that's a few years away.

    to me the KRK's sound more balanced than the Adam's in that room's ACOUSTICS! this could be different in an acousticly treated room but the Adam's seemed to bass heavy and lacked high end where i feel the KRK's were better although a little too bright. Its personal opinion along with everything in the music industry from the audience to the engineer to the artist!

      When it comes to hifi, tastes will matter, yes. In a studio you want to hear it exactly the way it is, whatever truth is served.
      Most people would not bear a studio speaker in their living room due to the amount of crap produced on the market, both in terms of quality of recording and source.
      There is no way you can tell if the room or the speaker is at fault in this video other than looking at the specs of the speaker. Even if we could somehow obtain justifiable sound through UA-cam, the room might also color the sound we are hearing.

      @paulmay7777 9 років тому

      "At that price"? Brother, let me tell you, NO monitors are completely flat for one. For two, these are still relatively low end price wise. It's really only when you get up into the higher end stuff like barefoot micromains mm27's, some of the higher end PMC and genelec and maybe focal sm9 that you really get any accuracy. They still won't be completely flat but closer to it and mixing decisions will be easier.

    • @priyonjoni
      @priyonjoni 9 років тому

      I understand it's impossible for every speaker to be completely flat. But the differences at the price should be minimal. But it's also different listen through a mic as opposed to with your ears.

    • @xFunnyFreemanx
      @xFunnyFreemanx 6 років тому

      its due to standing waves in the room, as he moves the microphone from one init to another he is getting different results; you're hearing room modes.
      what he should have done is move the monitors around and used one speaker in mono, keeping the mic in the same position. .
      not a very good test really, but a good effort.

    I've compared all in real life in a well treated room similar results, A7X sound the most natural, A8X have more low end but lack mid range bite, the VXT8 have more low end and are more mid forward but they add allot of color. Adams are cleaner overall and have more detail up the top end. It's personal which you would prefer. The Event 20/30 are now a strong contender to all of them though.

    The best way to demo these speakers (which you so nieve said in the beginning of the video that you looked for a video on youtube so you could hear the different speakers) is to have them in your studio space. That doesn't mean cause you can hear them correctly and what they sound like, doesn't mean your mic and preamp and converters will record that sound and make my speakers translate that sound out to EXACTLY what you hear.

  • @denios36
    @denios36 10 років тому

    KRK's sound more open, but very bright and with sloppy muddy bass.
    As we're talking nearfields, I'd personally go with the A7X's, as the difference with the 8's is slim and for true bass experience a sub would be a better addition than a bigger woofer would be.

    Hey Michael, just a suggestion, but if you'd switch to the source track every now and then (i.e. don't use the microphone; copy straight from the digital source or whatnot into those timeslots) we could work out which ones are truest representations of the track...

  • @nixx908
    @nixx908 11 років тому +1

    No, all factors are definitely not constant. The position of the mic changes, the position of the speakers are different relative to the boundaries of the room. You are recording in mono (no imaging information) in an untreated room, which is a huge factor as well .
    Any slightest change in position of the mic changes the distance of each speaker to the mic and creates different phasing effect. In my opinion, this video doesn't provide any useful information for a potential buyer.

  • @MichaelAdelMusic
    @MichaelAdelMusic  11 років тому

    Ok, I'll explain this one more time. I never said this is an Exact replication. This is not an an-echoic chamber. this is your typical project studio space, with minimal room treatment. whatever is affecting the sound of one speaker in the room will apply to all other ones. If you can hear a difference between them, then this is the point of the test. I don't know if you have ever listened to them in real life or not, but what you hear in the video is a close representation of their character.

Though it depends on your music as well! I'd say Adams are better for rock music type and vocals. Really good clarity in the highs. Fuck A7X, get A8X, if you getting Adams, dont cheap out. The Adams are NOT magnetically shielded. the KRKs are. I'd say if you go with the Adams, keep your devices at least 2-3 ft away in all directions (specially near the ribbon tweeter, this thing will catch anything metal up to a feet away and get deformed by it, this is how strong this magnet is). if you put your hard drive beneath the table where the speakers are (as long as it's a wooden table), you should be fine.

After Adam A8X would put it to me, compared to krk are more opaque regarding sharp yet has more definition in the high (tweteer be by tape) and finally the Adam A7X are less accurate in the midrange. Don't think this test was accurate. The speakers are all in different positions in the room, and while U87 doesn't have proximity effect, how the sound bounces around the room and the angle the mic's at greatly affects the sound of each monitor.
    Good video, though. Personal favorites were the Adams. Balanced with a bright top end. The brightness it gives means I can feel comfortable adding bass then with the KRK where I'd have to take it away just to clear up some of the mud in the mids.

    You're totally wrong! We, the potential buyers, don't need PERFECT comparision for a couple of monitors. What the guy did is really right, because the room was the same, the mic and the interface was the same and i'm sure he was very careful with the distance, making sure that all the takes was similar to eachother, not perfect, but acuratelly enough. You can'T say this video is useless. I really wanted to know how they sound in the same room/recording chain. So stop being wrong.

    I like Krk's mids. Maybe adams sounds more neutral, but vxt more powerful and pleasure. Mayby adams better for mixing, but composing i'd prefer with krk.

    In this video i find the A8x come out flatter through my krk vxt8 :P but the vxt8 sound more pronounced allround with a bigger more full sound. but compared to my 5 inch hifi speakers the vxt8 sound much smaller but with more power in the low end ofc.

    You can easily hear that between professional monitors there is a lot of difference.

    All three sound aweful because of no room acoustic treatment whatsoever, but based purely on those recordings I'd pick the Adam A8X or the A7X, then the VXT-8 some way behind. KRK are just way too flattering. Fine if you're using it for a hi-fi casual listening, but not what you want in the studio.

    ... this stategy is horrible. you have to hear them with your own ears, not a mic...

    • @dirtkeepsthefunk

      A calibration microphone would at least provide a more realistic sense of the speakers. The Neumann is a great mic for many applications, but not giving people a sense of a speaker's sound and tonal qualities. Calibration mics can be found for a very reasonable price. Hopefully, in the future the reviewer might do this. Good luck...

    The vxt-8 are too pushed in the upper mid-range. not good for serious mixing. But in the end you have to get what you feel most comfortable with. choosing monitors is subjective.

    Man, those KRKs sound like ass. Over hyped harsh highs and mids. I could never mix on those things. They trick your ear into thinking they sound better. Much like a Hi Fi speaker. BAAAAD! Thx

  • @tentsforpaddies

    Thanks for your efforts Michael, but this sort of exercise really is a waste of time. Apart from the fact that you introduce the characteristics of your microphone and recording process into this, the audio then gets compressed the hell out of by youtube, before being played back on my TV speakers. The most this exercise is going to reveal to anyone is what the sound recorded by your microphone, then scrunched by YT, sounds like on whatever speakers they happen to have, but not a hell of a lot about the 3 speakers themselves. Anyone making a buying decision based on this deserves whatever they end up with (maybe they'll get lucky). The only sensible way to make a decision about monitors is to reference them directly with your own ears, using source material you are very familiar with, and preferably in the environment they will be used in, or at least in an acoustically treated space.

    vxt are very good but not flat in the bass you have to combine them with sub this is their secret..as far for a8x didn tl ike them at all if you have small room don t buy 8" inch woofer you will have to play them -very- low..
