Thank you SO much for this video! We’re picking our puppy up today and I’ve been stressed about when he can and can’t do certain things and this answered all my questions!!
This was a comforting video. We have had our adorable baby one week. He is now 9 weeks old. Conforted to know that my instincts on training have been good. Looking forward to watching all your videos. He sees Dr on Tuesday for first visit and his second round of vaccines. He had a wonderful start from his breeder.
Thank you for this! My puppy is about 13-14 weeks old, last of the shots happens a week from now. Today I decided to bring puppy out in the car with me. And I’ve been taking her outside in my back patio area. So this is a breath of fresh air for me! I’ll find a parking lot to do decompression walks with her! Thank you 🙏🏽
I'm a breeder and my Vet requires first shot at 5-6 weeks, second set at 8-9 weeks. I take my PupPups for BOTH the first AND second set of shots, then wait a minimum of 24 hours before releaaing them to their new owners. I also let them out to socialize with my other VACCINATED dogs (all my dogs are fully vaccinated and wormed regularly and kept in daily cleaned environments) a couple days after their first set of vaccines, but only for about half an hour a day so they can learn the social aspect of having other dogs around. I'm with them the whole time, as is their Mama. It has worked extremely well for my PupPups (8 litters in 6 years out of 4 females). I have nothing but positive feedback about how well socialized my PupPups are, and have had several repeat customer. My PupPups are my BABIES, and I treat them accordingly!! 💕
@@bossdogbullykennel6834 yes, as long as you're keeping them at home, in your yard, where you can control other dogs if you have any and their environment. Hi, we have two new GSP puppies. Both have second shot so far. We have 30 acres out in the country, they haven’t roamed any of the land except that of our yard area to go potty. We know there aren’t any other dogs but our 10 year old lab who’s been vaccinated. They did have to go potty in some public places on the 5.5 drive home from the breeder but kept it to area that didn’t look occupied by other dogs but you never know. Is this okay to let them in our yard even before all three shots. Also our vet recommends 3:39 four shots now, I’ve never heard this at all.
Thank you for all the wonderful puppy training videos!!! We pick up Lou our 8weeks old Great Pyrenees pup on Saturday April 9th! We have to travel 2 hours to get him from our cousin’s farm. We current live on the 3rd floor of an apartment and have a very narrow balcony. I’m hoping to get some fresh grass pee trays that you recommended but our outside grass areas are frequent by dogs, cats, and ever type of wild animal you can think of… well the basic ones like raccoons, possums, deer, rabbits, squirrels, and chipmunks! There is no safe place!!! What do you suggest for potty training??????? Also, you mentioned taking him on car rides and drive thrus but shouldn’t he always ride in his crate???? How often should these trip be? Daily, 2x day, once a week?? We want to make sure our soon to be enormous pup is well socialize!! Thank you! We look forward to the workshop tomorrow at 7pm!

Hi Michelle, I need to go to Texas to deal with a house we are selling and I was hoping to fly with my 9 wk old puppy. However, I have found the airlines do not allow pups to fly without full vaccination. So, I could drive- it’s two days. She will need to stop and potty, so what are some things I need to plan for and watch out for? Thanks
Hi, amazing video! I learned a lot of useful stuff. Can you please answer my doubt regarding my puppy's behavior? I have a 50-day-old male Shih Tzu puppy. He doesn't like drinking water and only eats soaked kibbles. Is that okay for his age? He avoids drinking water even if I add a little amount to his bowl along with soaked kibbles. I think this behavior might have come from his negative experience with bathing. I bathed him without knowing that we should wait at least two full months before bathing them. What can you suggest regarding this?
Please discuss this with your vet. You can also experiment with different bowls and try things like ice cubes to see if that works better. It seems unlikely to be related to bathing, as those are two separate activities in a dog's mind.
We are expecting a puppy later this year, and we would be interested to hear your thoughts. We live in NYC in a busy part of downtown. I'm sort of worried about going outside our apartment for potty breaks, because lots of dogs still walk and pee on the sidewalks. Should we just avoid and use the fresh patch inside until they get the 2nd or 3rd round of vaccinations? Also trying to get them used to the sounds, maybe it would be beneficial to bring them in a travel carrier and they bring them to the park bench to sit for abit to absorb the sounds and smells while safe inside the carrier? I think we will definitely do the puppy socialization classes once a week though.
You can find a spot that is not used much by other dogs. Puppies can still touch the ground before vaccinations are complete. You just need to make sure they aren't interacting with unvaccinated dogs or eating feces of unvaccinated dogs. Outings are also very very short for young puppies, and you start by watching from the car or far away from anyone or anything.
We are picking up our 16 week old pup tomorrow and I don't think the breeder did much socialization with her. It makes me sad that she may have anxiety issues. Is there anything we can do to help her?
It's good if you can socialize a puppy when she is young but even if she's past 16 weeks she can still learn new things and have a positive association with them. Follow the tips in this video and hold positive training sessions with her, exposing her to new things. You might wait to start with outside exposure sessions until you notice she's settled in to your home. When she appears ready you can start with household items like brooms, mops, vacuum cleaners, blenders and more. ua-cam.com/video/5jxUUyyXwZA/v-deo.htmlsi=uAIflTZn5XgjGIza
I’m puppy sitting tomorrow, doing some research. I’m gonna wear my big hat. Thank you!! I was about to take the poor thing into the woods lmaoooo. This is why I love UA-cam creators. Thank you!!! ❤
Hello, your videos have been very helpful. We are planning to get a boston terrier 8 week old next week. I was thinking would it be a good idea to use a puppy carrier to take my puppy out - so I am exposing him to the outside world but not letting him sniff or touch and be touched by any one ?
We don't recommend strollers or slings for exposure training. The most important part of exposing your puppy to the world is to make sure it's a positive experience for him. When you restrict his movements or can't see him in the stroller, you aren't able to notice subtle cues in body language that indicate stress or discomfort. This video has more details: ua-cam.com/video/5hXnQyxwVUY/v-deo.html
I have a question - we have been doing very short walks (literally half a block from our house and back, no further, on the sidewalk) with our pup who is 11 weeks. We are not letting him interact with any other people or dogs during these times. However I am still paranoid that this is maybe too risky for him? He is actually taking to the leash really well, and is learning to stay attentive to us so I feel like the training aspect is super valuable but I do worry still.
We like that you're not interacting with others and we like that you're going only a short distance from home. If he seems to be enjoying it and is not resisting or seems stressed, it's fine! For his safety, try to make sure he does not eat or lick anything on the ground. Take high value treats with you to redirect him if he does!
We will be bringing our 8-week-old puppy home next week. Our 16-year-old granddaughter can't wait to come visit and bring her dog to play. I hate to disappoint her. I know her dog is up-to-date on vaccines. Would it be okay? They are both cavapoos.
For known dogs who have all vaccines, it's fine to introduce them to the puppy but we suggest waiting until the second vaccine dose. That also gives your new puppy a chance to settle in before meeting a new friend. Please check out this video about safe and healthy playdates, and share it with your granddaughter too. With the right structure and supervision you can help these dogs be lifelong friends! ua-cam.com/video/13eUVNEecr4/v-deo.html
My puppy is a little under 8 weeks old, got his first shots at 7 weeks, and I've been taking him out in a dog stroller for outings/exposure. A lot of youtube videos stress puppy classes for socialization. Should I bother? The highest rated one near me doesn't require full vaccinations.
We don't recommend most socialization classes. The tend to be very overwhelming for the puppy, with all the dogs, new smells, bright lights, etc. It's better to expose him slowly to new things so you can make sure it's positive. After the 2nd shots you might find another dog with a calm temperament (with full vaccinations) for a playdate!
Question! What if you live in an apartment building and plenty of other dogs frequent outside the building. How do we potty train if the pup shouldn't be going outside where other dogs are?
Unvaccinated dogs are the biggest concern, so stray dogs are more of an issue than other pets. But you can use a grassy patch on your balcony or near your front door, and/or you can find a potty spot that is away from where most of the dogs do their business. There are lots of ways to help your dog get used to the outside world during this critical window, so be sure you're doing positive exposure training too!
What about taking him out on your own backyard? is this safe? i have a 12 week puppy he's already had 2 parvo shots. I would like to start potty training him for outside. Is this ok?
@@HowToTrainADreamDog I had the same question. What about stray cats? Not often but once in a while I've seen one in my backyard. Should I be concerned? My puppy is almost 13 weeks old and is pending the last shot. Thank you for your time.
Here in the Philippines, Parvo and distemper is not yet controlled. We make sure that our pups is fully vaccinated/ immune to these diseases before taking them outside It's better safe than sorry.
Thank you for your video. I am super scared to take my puppy out for a walk, my first dog got parvo virus at about 10 weeks old. He ended up passing away at 6.5 years old after getting lepto virus and he was vaccinated against it. Is it safe to walk my dog maybe on a street?
It's better to find a spot where other dogs do not go. Parking lots are usually a good option, or take him out in the car for some exposure sessions so he can still experience new things (from a distance). You can also meet other dogs (after vaccination #2) that you know to be vaccinated (at a friend's house, for example).
It's not about the days but more about when your dog has enough training and desensitization to the outside world that this will be a positive experience for him. Start with positive exposure to new things from a distance, or opening doors or windows to bring in some new smells and slowly work up to walking on the sidewalk, after leash skills have been practiced.
Thank you so much! You can check out our online course using the following link, 30 Days to Puppy Perfection: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/
Hello I just got a 7 week old pitbull puppy. He hasn't got any shots yet can he go outside to potty? I have an appointment on the 12 for his first Vaccination.
This video can help you with that question! We believe there is a way to safely and positively get your puppy outside, even before vaccinations are complete.
As soon as you were like find a new vet I knew I liked you I thought you were going to say oh yes they cannot go outside but you obviously know dogs I was just wondering what is the earliest age I can let them explore in an enclosed area specifically for puppies my dog had a litter of puppies and the area would oviously be cleaned and no other animals would have had contact with the area on the side of the house we live in the middle of no where in California when would be the earliest age I can do that? I was thinking maybe after the first round of shots also some places say you can give them the 1st dhpp vaccine at 6 weeks would that be ok?
It will be important to add in some positive exposure training while she's still young. Here are some ideas on how to do it: ua-cam.com/video/5hXnQyxwVUY/v-deo.html
I'm getting my puppy in march and I'm worried about eventually taking her for walks in the area, there are so many dogs constantly barking as I walk by! How should I start to handle this? Thank you
As part of exposure training you can help your dog form a positive relationship with new and exciting things, including barking. You can also teach your dog to be neutral and unphased when walking by other dogs. We can help you with that as part of our online course! www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/
As a new yorker, I have no where safe outside to let my puppy go... so I carry her outside but there isn't very helpful advice on how to expose her to things when you live in a major city with lots of rats carrying diseases :(
There is parvovirus in my area so my vet has recommended against going out until all 3 vaccination cycles are done, but my puppy is losing his mind at home. Sure taking him to sniff parking lots sounds great, but maybe he'll sniff parvo too? Oh, also, tons of stray dogs where I live, so that's a risk too as I'm not sure about their health...
You might do more exposure sessions from the car or go to places where dogs don't go. Sniffspot is a service that allows you to visit backyards, which would allow you to screen for vaccinated dogs.
@@HowToTrainADreamDogFrom the car sounds great. So that's essentially just him staring out the window while driving, getting some fresh air, etc? Not in the US, so sniffspot isn't an option for me
We don't recommend letting him sniff while driving. That can be overwhelming and not safe. You can take him somewhere and park, then sit in the car with the windows or back open (for an SUV) and let him sniff. You can go somewhere he can see people (start from a distance) and reward him when he sees people and doesn't react. This is a great start to socialization.
Great information! We live next to a green space. occasionally we have seen skunks, raccoons and foxes in the lower end of our yard, although never near the house. Near the house we have bird feeders which attract a lot of squirrels. Should we be worried about squirrels carrying disease that our unvaccinated pup could get? I have heard of new puppy owners spraying the edge of their property (the cement curb) with a dilute bleach solution to kill bacteria before their pup comes home. Would you recomment this practice?
Absolutely not. Bleach is a highly dangerous toxic solution that is hazardous to your dog and the ecosystem. Build a healthy immune system by feeding your puppy a proper diet, such as raw and adding probiotics to the diet. 80% of the immune system is built in the gut so feed them right and avoid obvious potential risks such as stray dogs before they are fully vaxxed
It might be a good idea to block off this area to minimize any risks to your pup. We have a gate that we recommend for an outdoor potty spot that might work well in this situation. www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy_pen_outdoor
I just got my bulldog puppy yesterday and he’s almost 9 weeks old, the breeder told me he hasn’t been on any floors and don’t go outside? He gets his second shot this weekend, can I still try to potty train him outdoors? We live in a country setting on almost 2 acres of land, so our neighbors are not close to us.
Hi Michelle, my dog just recovered from canine distemper and need to wait for another month to get the 2nd vaccine, and by that time she will be 5 month old. I have been bringing her out on a dog troller to see the vet when she is around 3 month and seems she is friendly to ppl and other dogs. But during this month time, I just keep her staying at home as she just took 1 vaccine...Actually I am extremely worry about the situation of delaying the socialization exercise, however she just took 1 vaccine... What should I really do now, is it really ok to bring her out for a walk? Thanks!
Yes! Just make sure to be aware of your surroundings on the walk. Show us some walk pictures of your fur baby in our Puppy Training with Michele Lennon Facebook group: howtotrainadreamdog.com/FB-group
Didn’t get my pup til 13 weeks and now I’m trying to fix her barking. We have socialized her the best we could since we got her. Sounds like things are gonna be harder cuz of her age? She’s gonna be 4 months on the 2nd
It really depends on what you'll be doing with your dog. Public parks and markets should not be done until your dog has received all the shots. Other exposure training can take place in a safe way before all shots are complete.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Today was the first day my fully vaccinated 🐶 💕 could go outside but he was too scared. He was shivering with fear when I tried to let him walk outside on the leash. Slowly, Safely, and Positively I will introduce him to the outside world.
We recommend saving the neighborhood walks for a time when your pup has established the foundation leash skills. We cover these in Module 1 of our online course, 30 Days to Puppy Perfection: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/
If it is under 40 degrees Fahrenheit, try to limit outside activities to 20 minutes or less each time. You may choose to get a dog vest for situations like this but it will require a desensitization process long before you expect your puppy to wear it.
My Boston Terrier should have died after her Bordetella vaccine. 100% pneumonia in both lungs. Diagnosed autistic. My two rescues were small pups during the pandemic closure. It’s so rough. They weren’t socialized, were separated from their litter at 3 1/2 weeks.
My Jack is just about 10 months old Cavalier, I got him at 3 months old, he grew up on a horse farm and they had harlies so he came to me used to a lot of loud noises and big machinery. The early trips to homedepot and lowes were fun places to take him for a stroll in the cart. I got him sniffing my bicycle till he ignored it...then he got put in the doggie basket and he laid down and ends up he loves going for bike rides with me. We go almost every day now that the weather is warming up. Now it's a recumbent trike and I can't tell you how many times we would come back from a ride and i will park the trike in my back yard to let him out... he will take a nap in my driver seat.

Is this ok?
Yes it's OK to take him in your own backyard. Try to prevent any stray dogs from going back there, but usually back yards can't be accessed by strays.
We make sure that our pups is fully vaccinated/ immune to these diseases before taking them outside
It's better safe than sorry.
Strays and unvaccinated dogs is everywhere. Even neighborhood.
Thank you for sharing this! Stay tuned!
How many days after final vaccination can you walk down the sidewalk?
It's not about the days but more about when your dog has enough training and desensitization to the outside world that this will be a positive experience for him. Start with positive exposure to new things from a distance, or opening doors or windows to bring in some new smells and slowly work up to walking on the sidewalk, after leash skills have been practiced.

Thank you for these tips.
Thank you for watching!
Michele I love you for these videos!! You’re so nice and sweet and these are great videos 🤩🤩🤩
Aw, that means a lot. Thank you so much!
These are great questions and it would be best to bring them up with the qualified veterinarian that you will be working closely with for the pups!
I have a 4 month old Yorkie whose partially vaccinated. I walk her on concrete away from grass and where dogs my poop or urine at. Is that okay?
It will be important to add in some positive exposure training while she's still young. Here are some ideas on how to do it: ua-cam.com/video/5hXnQyxwVUY/v-deo.html
I'm getting my puppy in march and I'm worried about eventually taking her for walks in the area, there are so many dogs constantly barking as I walk by! How should I start to handle this? Thank you
As part of exposure training you can help your dog form a positive relationship with new and exciting things, including barking. You can also teach your dog to be neutral and unphased when walking by other dogs. We can help you with that as part of our online course! www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/
I have a very large unfenced yard, is it OK to just use a outdoor playpen?
Yes, you can set up a puppy pen outside! Here are some we recommend: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/products/gates-and-pens/
As a new yorker, I have no where safe outside to let my puppy go... so I carry her outside but there isn't very helpful advice on how to expose her to things when you live in a major city with lots of rats carrying diseases :(
Madison, I live in NY as well. There are so many places to go. Check out this video for more info ua-cam.com/video/yHH4ua3zxVI/v-deo.html
@@HowToTrainADreamDog Amazing, thank you so much ✨
Great information!
Hopefully, this video was helpful for you! We have lots of tips that could help you figure out how to proceed.
Thanks!
Considering your circumstances with recovery, it would likely be best to consult with your vet. Good luck!
My puppy is 10 weeks old but he didn’t finished his shots, he just have the first ones, can he go to the beach? Away from other dogs!
We don't recommend the beach until all vaccinations are complete.
Our puppy finished vacation course about 4 days ago is it safe to go around the neighborhood?
Yes! Just make sure to be aware of your surroundings on the walk. Show us some walk pictures of your fur baby in our Puppy Training with Michele Lennon Facebook group: howtotrainadreamdog.com/FB-group
Helo Pam from Office. ❤
Thanks for advice. 👍
You're most welcome!
My puppy just had his first round of shots she is 8 weeks old do you think it will be fine to have her explore my backyard?
If your backyard is fenced in, you should be safe!
Didn’t get my pup til 13 weeks and now I’m trying to fix her barking. We have socialized her the best we could since we got her. Sounds like things are gonna be harder cuz of her age? She’s gonna be 4 months on the 2nd
Keep up the good work! It isn't too late to continue socializing- just remember to go slow, and keep expectations low and patience high!
How many shots does a puppy have to get to be in public
It really depends on what you'll be doing with your dog. Public parks and markets should not be done until your dog has received all the shots. Other exposure training can take place in a safe way before all shots are complete.
Great tips, Michelle!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
What age can I take my puppy to the barn with cows, cats, horses, other dogs. I am getting him at 8 weeks old
This would be a great question for your vet since there are so many other animals involved!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Today was the first day my fully vaccinated 🐶 💕 could go outside but he was too scared. He was shivering with fear when I tried to let him walk outside on the leash. Slowly, Safely, and Positively I will introduce him to the outside world.
Wonderful! That sounds like a great plan that you've put in place. Very best of luck to you!
I can walk around the neighborhood and stay away from other dogs in the area, is that safe ?
We recommend saving the neighborhood walks for a time when your pup has established the foundation leash skills. We cover these in Module 1 of our online course, 30 Days to Puppy Perfection:

omg ty
We are happy to help you!
You say if the postman can do it my puppy can do it? I am not taking my 3-pound Shih Tzu puppy out in 19-degree weather.
If it is under 40 degrees Fahrenheit, try to limit outside activities to 20 minutes or less each time. You may choose to get a dog vest for situations like this but it will require a desensitization process long before you expect your puppy to wear it.
No wonder my pup was so reluctant to walk on a leash. 🤦🏾♀️will need to build up to the neighborhood walls.

I'm going to take my puppy to work with me and have my husband sit inside his canoe and try to get puppy familiar with it.
It's great to expose your puppy (in a positive way!) to new things like that!
So glad your Boston is OK!
my vet told me that i can take my puppy for a walk 7 days after the 1st vaccination.
Your veterinarian likely knows your area well, and there may be a low-risk for infectious disease present! You're lucky!
Thank you for sharing this!! Keep up the good work!
